It was a snowy Sunday morning and I was sick of my long lame a@@ hair. I went on yelp and searched a few places. I thought about Pyara and decided not to spend a ridiculous amount of money for a haircut. I called Hair Connections thinking it was actually another salon and to my surprise they were open on Sunday. I booked an appointment the same day. I told them I wanted some layers and that was that. I walked in and the salon itself is pretty small and clean. I was meeting Gracie, I don't think we hit it off at first. She wanted to know what I wanted and since i was not even that sure I expected her to help me out a bit. She brought a hair magazine and told me look through it for any ideas. She picked a cut that was okay ,not exactly what I wanted but def better than what I had going on at the moment. Gracie took her time, I was there for over an hour not really knowing what she was doing to my hair. I just kept seeing hair falling onto the salon floor. So she finally finishes the cut, dries it and I look at it and think oh this is okay. I dont think it was what I wanted, but I thought I can fix it at home. It had been snowing all day and I was having a bad hair day. I went home washed my hair blow dried and flat ironed it and I have to say that I love it. It was exactly what I wanted. You ever see a friend who hacks her hair off and it just looks like *so fantastic* on them that you ask them where they got it done? Well god bless Mer for sending me to the Co. I just got back from my second consecutive visit to Hair Connection this afternoon, which is a HUGE deal because I am always unhappy (not crying unhappy more like you evil sylist! you made my fine hair into a shapeless helmet! unhappy) about stylists and constantly seeking out a new one. Peter is FABULOUS he is funny, charming, knows how to make you feel good and can cut himself a mean 'do. The business is family run, laid back, easy to get an appointment usually even though there are only 3 of them (I think?) Angela did my color today and she managed to get the rest of the strawberry blonde disaster out of my hair with a single process of high/lowlights - My great hairdresser search is OVER! All in all, fabulous cut and color for under $130.00 with zero pretension and plenty of atmosphere? This place must be heaven! edited to add: I went back to get some awesome highlights this past week and Angela showed me how to blow out my hair. I had for years been confounded as to why I could not blow my hair out to look like I came from the salon. I went here based on all the great Yelp reviews and I definitely wasn't disappointed. This is a family-run, community-oriented salon that has been around for years. Everyone here was incredibly friendly and not one bit pretentious. One time I was there, they were giving free haircuts to the people who work at the store next door. Based on what I observed, it seems like they have a very loyal following of clients, probably at least as much for the atmosphere and attention as the actual styling. I usually have a hard time trusting people with my hair (too many bad experiences) but I liked Carmella immediately. She really understood my hair and explained to me what she was doing at every step. At first she shaped but didn't layer my hair because she thought it would look better that way, but she told me that if it wasn't exactly what I wanted I could come back in and she would fix it, which is what I ended up doing. She seemed to genuinely want to give me a cut that I'd be really happy with-- and I am really pleased with it. Be aware that you can't tip on your credit card. I didn't have cash with me the first time I went in and Carmella told me that it was ok and I could tip later. Love Angela. Love the familial banter. Called at the last minute because I was having a "if I have to live with this head of hair one more day I will cut it myself" moment. As I live 30 minutes away and Angela had a cancellation, serendipity took hold and I hurried off to my first haircut of spring. She knows my hair by now, so she got right to it. I wanted it short, and it can get curly so I want it short enough that some of the curl is cut off, and I can tame it with product. 45 minutes and $50 later I was one happy mama. My whole day got brighter, it was that kind of haircut. I've been here probably a close to a dozen times over the last 4 years or so, and I'm never disappointed with my cut. Angela's great. This is a review for Dana! I love my curly hair and wear it curly as often as I can (pretty much everything except winter). Dana educated me about what different cut types are, why some might work better & helped me figure out what I like (simplicity in cuts). He helped me take a major hair risk cutting my hair ear length short (shorter actually) from mid-back length and I didn't hate it. I actually kind of loved it, but I like it longer better (and it is easier to maintain that way). I've been loyal to Dana because of his way with curly hair, but then also because who he is & how is is that way! I never hesitate to tell him the truth if something didn't work (on occasion in has happened slightly) and he remembers & adjusts & has a conversation. Highly highly recommend! read more

Dana himself is friendly and listens to what *you* want to do with your hair, and gives you great suggestions. I had an AWFUL experience there. - the place is quite old, ugly, and dusty. You're not going to a nice salon! - the owner will pretend to be your friend, while really he is just annoying you with inappropriate an loud comments; - the young lady who cut my hair spilled a gallon of water on me while washing my hair ('oh shit,' she grumbled---lovely); - she did a terrible job--WAY, way shorter than what I had asked. And I had brought a picture with me. - no, a man's haircut should not take more than 1h10min; I was late to my next appointment! - errrr... $45 *WITH* the student discount? I just got the worst haircut here I have *ever* had in my entire life. I feel let down by yelp! I cannot understand all the good reviews here. I'm not exagerating even a little bit. Carmella cut my hair and while her and Peter were both very nice, the haircut was horrible! I'm not a picky person and I do not say this lightly. She kept saying that if I don't like it to give her a call and she would fix it.. I didn't say anything because that's exactly what I was afraid of. She would try and fix it and mangle my hair even more! I couldn't wait to get out of there and now I'm searching for someone who can fix my hair. I can't stress enough how bad my haircut was.. I went to Hair Connection on the basis of the reviews I found on Yelp, and I wasn't disappointed! I tried to book an appointment with Angela, but she was unavailable, so I went with Mona instead. Mona did an awesome job listening to what I wanted done (I hated my color and cut and had some ideas of how I wanted it fixed). I ended up with blond highlights and a cut I actually *like* for once! Yesterday, I cut off 10 inches of my hair. And I want to extoll the glorious work of Lindsey. She is friendly, and took her TIME - I went in at 10:30 and didn't get out until 12:30! At one point she apologized for taking so long - but that was exactly the precise and careful haircut that I needed. She also helped me to figure out exactly what I wanted, and was all around both supportive enough to make me be secure that I was doing the right thing in cutting off (almost) all of my hair - as well as provide great suggestions. Like the previous writer, I also couldn't decide with bangs, and she offered the same "free-bangs-if-i-want-them"... which I don't, so I'm glad that I didn't get them in the first place. I got a long bob, but we avoided the word bob (because Lindsey was trying her hardest to make sure I didn't turn into a soccer-mom with my new hairstyle). It's SUPER cute, layered, short in back, longer in front. Peter is a hilarious presence around the salon. Jumping around, singing to the radio - he really made the time fly by. Overall, the space that the salon creates is the LEAST pretentious and stuffy salon I've ever been - not only is every friendly, i.e. Peter knows the name of every customer in there - but I felt completely comfortable being there for over 2 hours! There was never a moment of awkward small-talk, as the employees clearly preferred working in silence instead of distractedly trying to converse. Which I really appreciated. :) I walked out of that salon feeling like a million dollars. I haven't felt this great about my hair in a long time - thanks Lindsey! This place has been my refuge for the past two years. I'm a college student in the area, and Hair Connection is just a few blocks away from my dorm. I wandered in, got an appointment for later that day, came back, and got the best hair cut of my life. I haven't been to another hair dresser since I found Peter, and hopefully he will be in the area for a long time to come! Last time, he managed to get rid of my frizzy split ends (five months was way too long to go between cuts for me...) without making a noticeable dent in the length. That's magic. They offer a discount to students, give free bang trims, and have awesome music playing all day long. Peter will even sing to you! He really gets to know his customers, and that's rare nowadays. He always asks about school and my family, introduces me to other customers, and offers me cookies/candy when he has them around. What more can you ask for? read more

My first review, and I had to add my 5 stars for Hair Connection. As Carmella was washing my hair, she told me "Yelp has been good to us." and how could it not, with the good it's been to yelpers? When I called to make my appointment, Angela started with "So, tell me about your hair", then told me that she had a spot & a hairdresser available for me. It's hard to feel uncomfortable at Hair Co., and after just a few minutes of listening to Carmella talk about what is and isn't good for my hair, I trusted her to go to town without any more input from me. Peter has been cutting my hair for a while. My hair is hard to cut, wavy, uneven, thick. Basically a pain. Peter patiently works his way around my head leaving me with a great cut every time. You have to be ready to sit there for a while as he won't stop until it looks great. Although I moved out of Cambridge a while back, I still always make a point of coming back here for my hair. It's a small shop, very friendly. If you are a woman, you might want to ask for Angela or Lindsey instead. They do great stuff with colors and cuts. No matter who cuts your hair, Peter will make a point of talking to you and telling you how great you look when you are done...and he won't be lying. read more

I've had long curly hair that I never cut more than a couple of inches since age 6, and recently I decided I wanted to unburden myself of all those years of hair and go for a very short haircut. I looked for somewhere warm and non-intimidating where I could feel taken care of and in good hands for this personal transformation. After reading the reviews here about the friendliness and food at Hair Connections, I thought, "Yes, this is the kind of place I wouldn't mind hanging out in while someone cuts off a lot of my hair." Dana--the house expert on curly hair--cut my hair today, and I could not be more thrilled about the experience and the results! He was incredibly skilled and just really sweet and supportive of my decision and how to get the look I was going for--buzzed on the back and sides, longer on top and in the front. I appreciated that he asked me a couple of times to confirm I was sure I wanted all the hair off before starting. In other words, he recognized it wasn't a trivial sort of decision to cut off that much hair. He took a good leisurely pace so I could intersperse feedback and he explained what he was doing and how he was thinking about it as he went. I worried a little how the bangs would look, but I had faith and that definitely paid off. I look great and feel lighter and liberated. Now that my hair has dried it looks just as good if not better! On my way home a couple random people already complimented me on the haircut. I definitely plan on returning, including if/when I decide to grow my hair long again. read more

I got a really good cut--not exactly what I'm looking for but hell if I know what I'm looking for. She is friendly, does a fast cut, and was available the same day I needed a haircut. I was impressed, because when I told her I didn't know how I wanted it cut, and was open to suggestions, she suggested a cut and went for it instead of just giving me a shorter version of what I already had. I went to Hair Connection based on Yelp reviews, and wasn't disappointed. I had a fantastic hairdresser in Nashville, and have been looking for a great haircut since I moved back up to Boston. After a series of mediocre cuts at another salon, I decided it was time to try a new stylist and a new cut. Now, I have fine, thin, wavy hair and a fairly round face. It's hard to find a great haircut that flatters my face, works with my hair, and doesn't make me feel as though I look like a boy. I had also decided that I wanted to cut bangs - not sideswept bangs, either. Peter had an appointment the day I called, and did a great job with the cut. He didn't take off too much of the length (a problem I've had in the past), and cut choppy bangs that work perfectly. I've gotten loads of compliments on the cut. I did notice when I got home that one side of my hair was ever so slightly longer than the other side, but Peter also offered me free trims on the bangs every 2-3 weeks! (I've taken him up on the offer, and he's true to his word.) The student discount is definitely appreciated, too. Good haircuts can be expensive! read more

Ok, so this is a re-review. I'd given this place 4 stars before. I went a second time and had to wait 30 mins after my appointment time till my hairdresser was ready. She didn't seem to be in a rush, even though I was. Haircut was okay, but pricey. She kept asking me questions, like she wasn't sure what she should do. Oh, it took something like 2 1/2 hours to do a partial foil and cut. This is not the kind of thing that takes that long anywhere else. I'm in constant search for a great place to get my haircut. I went to the Connection because of all the great reviews I read on Yelp. Grace cut my hair and while she was extremely sweet she seemed unsure. My cut took about an hour and a half while another girl just sat and waiting for her appointment. In the end it wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it wasn't a horrible cut. It just seemed that she took a particularly long time on not doing much. (I have thick, long and really straight hair. All I wanted was a trim to get the dead stuff off and even out my layers). Don't get me wrong -- I wasn't anxious to get out of the seat. Peter and Carmella are unbelievably charming and hilarious. They made me feel like part of the family as they did with all of the clients in the place (even the girl who was waiting). They all clearly enjoyed their work and the company they kept. Price-wise, Hair Connection is definitely on the cheaper end of things. At the end of my cut, they gave me a student discount (even though I told them I was no longer a student) and my cut came to $45 w/o tip. While the Connection was a good time, I'm still in search of a great cut. read more

I decided I was going to be *inventive* with my new haircut and brought in a picture for Carmella to look at. After looking at my hair and looking at the picture, she informed me that my hair would not do the same look because the textures were different, different shaped face, etc. THEN, she proceeded to tell me what styles would work that could get close to it. I don't think the stylist (Mona) and I were on the same wavelength. Or even close. She told me multiple times that, based on the vibe she was getting from me, I wasn't ready to go too short. This is despite the fact that I repeatedly asked her to make it shorter. When I went to another hairdresser 2 days later, she asked me how many months(!) it had been since my last haircut. The sides were layered but the back was not, and the back wasn't even straight. It seems as though part of the haircut was just forgotten and left unfinished. I guess I'm lucky that Mona didn't cut too short, because it gave me room to fix the haircut later. My haircut made me cringe whenever I looked in the mirror, so I was tempted to give 1 star. I gave two stars because the atmosphere seemed to be generally comfortable. As other reviews have noted, Peter is very friendly and sings while he cuts hair. People were having conversations with stylists that they seemed to use regularly and be very happy with. read more

Dear Yelper, I often use Yelp to try out new restaurants, hair places, car places, etc. However, this the first time I have been driven to write a review. Yesterday I went to Hair Connections in Porter Square. Angela was amazing. She alternately highlighted, put in a wash, and low-lighted to fix a too gold highlight/color job that I had gotten from another hairdresser a few months ago. The color she put in is gorgeous: the darker blonde is my natural color and the platinum is the color that my hair naturally turns in the summer. It looks great! And then the cut - I usually give my hairdressers carte blanche to do whatever, because my hair is pretty easy and grows out nicely. Angela was very systematic, measuring the rounds of my head, to determine the best cut for me. And again - it looks gorgeous. Very sleek and I love it. Go to Hair Connections. As a veteran of the hair styling world, I have to say that the Hair Connection is the best salon I've been to. I've recommended it to a few friends, and they've loved their results as well. It's the kind of place I almost don't want to review for fear that I'll never get a last minute appointment again! I get my hair cut with Lindsey, who is like a mad scientist! Her work is extraordinarily precise and thoughtful. I appreciate that she actually listens to what I want done, and will offer suggestions on how to make it work (rather than talk you out of it). She does my color as well, which has been quite the project (I'm a natural blonde and had been having my hair professionally dyed espresso brown - she's taken the time and energy to help me get my blonde back, and I have loved every shade she has created along the way!) Hair Connection offers a friendly, chatty environment, but if you're not in the mood to be social, they will let you be with a book/magazine and talk among themselves (much appreciated). It's the kind of salon where everyone gets to know you, and you leave cheered-up and excited about your look! And if you're there for 5 hours, like I was when I had the color stripped from my hair, they'll even offer to get you a sandwich and feed the parking meter for you :-) And they will NEVER overcharge you. I had a short bob that I have been growing out, and she always gives me a cut that lasts a long time as the hair grows through different stages. I cannot recommend Dana enough at Hair Connection. He is a great guy and gives a great haircut! I think this is the first time I've ever totally loved the result when I let someone just go with their own idea about how to cut my hair. He is great with hair that is curly or wavy. Also my hair is very thick and he really knows how to cut it so that it hangs well. His prices are very affordable and he is easy to schedule with, which I love. I knew my long-time hair stylist was just not doing it for me anymore... but I had no idea what I was missing until I finally "cheated" on her by going to the Hair Connection. Carmella told me more about my hair and its proper care than I'd every heard before - and I discovered after she cut it properly that my hair is actually *curly* not just wavy in a flat sort of way! And though I thought she would cry over what had been done to my partner's hair, she managed to make it look 100% better despite explaining it would take patience and several months to grow out the more ragged sections into a decent cut. The atmosphere is friendly and you are treated like family (e.g., introduced to any other customers who happen to be there). This is a review for Dana! I have hair that cannot decide what it is, some straight and some curly. But Dana makes it beautiful. AND he makes it easy to style. Dana listens to your needs and wishes, then arrives at a low maintenance and no fuss cut. Dana does not solve cuts with products, rather with his diligent and meticulous technique. Dana gives you a cut that grows out beautifully; almost to a fault as you do not get to see Dana enough because the cut last so long. I can not say enough positive things about Hair Connection! I got a referral from my sister (who has curlier hair) to see Dana, and was very pleasantly surprised. I've always had long straight hair, and after talking with Dana before the big chop, was surprised to see that my hair had substantial body to it! He really looked at my hair, asked what I wanted from it, and what he thought would look best. And he listened, which was very important to me! Many people have complimented me, and my hair has never looked better! The whole staff there is incredibly nice!
