I came to Judy Jetson a year ago when I needed to get a hair cut. Kristin has become my go-to girl. She's given me consistently great hair cuts, and she was even down to do my hair for my wedding. Kayla, Rachel, and Emily also did my sister and two teen cousin's hair for the wedding and they were great. None of my family lives in the area so they were all meeting for the first time day of and all the stylists made them feel so welcome and gave them the styles that they'd hoped for. They all looked so good! I don't yet have photos of them but I have my sisters big disco-waves in progress. She showed them a picture of Barbie in the opening dance number and Emily delivered. All of these haircuts, wedding hair trials, and wedding day events were coordinated by Justin who is a dream to work with and made everything go so smoothly. Images: 4 reference photos I showed my hairdresser and the result I arrived 15 minutes early and was seen 30 minutes late into my 45min appointment, and only sat in the styling chair for 15 mins total. After asking for a hairdresser comfortable working with long hair, I was matched with one who insulted my hair the entire appointment, repeating "I hate long hair, this sucks." I asked him to cut one portion of my right hair, tapering down, and he chopped off the entire right side of my hair, tapering up, immediately ruining the style I asked for, leaving no length to mend it. When I asked for my first correction of this already botched style, he scoffed and rolled his eyes. When I asked for the second correction, he interrupted me to call over to and ask for approval from his next client, saying, "are you a lesbian? would you date this?" even though we were both transmasc strangers. He did not ask for my approval, just reacted to his next client's shrug of a response and told me "see? who wouldn't like this cut?" He then stopped talking to me to move on to his next client and the appointment was apparently over. read more

i made a simple mistake of putting the time of my appointment in my calendar wrong, and as soon as i realized i called the salon to let them know and tried to work with them to either see if i could come 15 minutes late to my appointment or rebook for another time. the receptionist was super rude and backhanded in the way he talked to me, insinuating i was wasting everyone's time. i've been here at least twice before, and the lack of grace and flexibility for a returning customer is super disappointing. the 100% cancellation fee also feels like a scam, but i was more upset over the way i was spoken to over the phone. i'll absolutely never be returning, but the receptionist didn't seem to care at all. this is a business that does not prioritize service or client relationships, and it's apparent. the quality of the haircuts i've gotten in the past have been very mediocre as well, so i would caution new customers to avoid at all costs. read more

Love, love, love!!! Kayleigh was my stylist, and she was congenial and very skilled. I love the hip ambience of the salon, and that they are open on Sundays. They asked for length on the top, long in the back and short on the sides - think David Bowie Ziggy Stardust. Anya obviously didn't care or know how to cut this hairstyle. She could not have possibly listened to what was asked for or look at the reference pictures provided. 5 minutes later with only 2 inches left all over my teenager running off in tears. This salon has catered to the styling needs of the punk crowd since actual punks were still teenagers. Try to remember that when you read bad reviews from the soccer moms and clueless youth. My hair is fine, wavy (2A for those in the know) and naturally blonde on its way to becoming white. I've been going to Carmi for several years now, and my hair always looks great when I leave and each cut has had longevity, i.e. it still has style several weeks later. I've gone from super-short pixie to longish shoulder length, and I've dyed my hair various shades of blonde, blue, and pink. I've always liked my hair. We chat about tattoos, junk TV shows, and myriad expressions of pop culture. No awkward small talk. I like the atmosphere here; it's cool and retro with no BS. If you want a massage, elevator music, beige minimalist decor, or ass-kissing, go to a spa. If you want to interact with interesting humans and get a great do, JJ is second to none. The salon has a strict policy about no tipping on cards and charges for no-show appointments. JJ is on Mass Ave. in Cambridge between two universities in a hectic part of Porter Square. People, figure it out; if you are late, you eff up everything. Deal with it. This level of adulting is doable. The prices are different per stylist, so ask if you don't know. Their webpage is wonky, so def call and ask. The more senior staff charge more. If you want a cut from the owner, Judy, yes, you will pay more. I can 100% guarantee you that bad reviews of this place come from The Privileged People who expect a plush interior (not a punk aesthetic), free massages (not a spa!) and witchcraft instead of a haircut. If a stylist does "whatever I tell them to" without any input, i get nervous. I need someone to tell me when I'm asking for the impossible. Accept reality as your personal savior. read more

Just had my third haircut from Kristen, and I couldn't be more in love. She is consistent, super detail oriented, & very talented. My hair type is thick & naturally curly, but I blowdry it straight, & I have had decades of bad haircuts from other stylists. Kristin gets it right EVERY TIME & goes in to make the most gorgeous bouncy layers that get me so many compliments. Anya saved my hair! Tbh I've been upset with my hair for months due to a bad haircut prior to Covid, and then an even worse one mid-Covid. Fast-forward to this month. I finally grew out my hair to a length worth working with. I didn't have quite enough to match my inspiration photos, but Anya made it work. She was an expert at working with my wavy, frizzy hair, doing the final cut once my hair had dried under the hood. Anya is a hair wizard. She took my damaged bleach blonde hair and turned it into a gorgeous very natural looking medium blonde that looks like it is growing out of my scalp. The last two hairdressers I went to burned my scalp and caused a ton of breakage. My hair honestly feels better now than when I came in. Anya took such good care of my hair. My hair is difficult and for years now, I've been getting cuts that make it manageable, thanks to Carmi. She's a great conversationalist and she loves Pee Wee Herman, which just gets her extra points in my book. I have put up with a lot of things from this salon over the years that have made me uneasy--surprise price hikes, religious decor that I found to be a bit much, the annoying "no tipping on credit cards" policy that frequently had me going out of my way for an extra ATM trip, and the trademark rudeness mentioned in other reviews--but last week was the last straw for me. I was approaching the end of my maternity leave and badly needed to cut my too-long and too-thick hair. I booked an appointment as usual and arrived right on time with my 11-week-old baby. He was sound asleep. The receptionist looked at him with so much disgust it was as if I'd wheeled poop into the salon. She told me they couldn't have children on the floor due to liability issues--chemicals, scissors, etc. I said this was news to me and my stylist graciously moved her supplies over to a different station so the stroller could be parked out of the way. I got my hair cut but was upset the entire time, unlike my son, who literally slept for the duration of the appointment and caused no trouble at all. 1) how exactly was baby going to get in contact with scissors and chemicals while sitting strapped into the stroller, or even in my arms? He can't even get his own hands to his face yet. 2) I checked their website afterward and there is no "no child" policy, nor is there a "no stroller" policy. 3) I asked other moms in the area, lots of them, both face to face and via Facebook, if this was a common policy at hair salons and got a resounding "nope, never heard of it, and in fact my salon is excited when I bring my baby in." 4) some of these moms even said they'd seen babies at Judy Jetson before, so if they truly have his lame and unfriendly policy, they aren't even consistent about it. I was never cool enough for you, Judy Jetson--I've always known that. But stupidly i kept giving you my money anyhow. Never again. I had my haircut at this salon today and while the stylist was fine and the cut was too (just a trim), I'm bummed at the price I had to pay for it. I made the appointment somewhat spontaneously in the hopes of having a fresh cut for a trip I'm leaving for tomorrow. I wanted to make it as quick an errand as possible​ and asked my stylist not to shampoo or dry my hair. My hair is pretty straightforward: wavy, bob length, medium thickness. My stylist wet my hair and had me sit for about ten minutes, maybe less? She gave me a towel so I could dry it myself before leaving. All in all, it cost me $65. So, here's the moral of the story. Check their prices first--they differ depending on stylist--and maybe don't book your appointment​ while walking your dog in a downpour. P.S. Prices are only viewable on their desktop site. Linda is the absolute greatest!! I had been struggling with my hair (a short pixie cut) since I had to leave my last long-term stylist due to commute distance - I hadn't found someone who both knew how to cut a good pixie as well as was determined to make sure their clients walked out of the salon happy. I found both of these in Linda! Linda exclusively cuts short hair, and she really knows what she is doing. Right when I sat down in her chair, she could tell I was unhappy with my hair. She had me explain to her exactly what I didn't like, and then she spent a while just combing around in my hair, getting a sense of it and of the last cut I had, and seeing what she could do. I don't remember the last time a stylist spent so much time just looking at my hair before washing it! During the cut I was so happy to chat with Linda - she is a great conversationalist and made the time pass super quickly. She is fun, funny, and witty. After cutting my hair, she made sure that I was satisfied with it before I left the salon - including re-touching the cut three times to make it more like the style that I wanted but had a hard time expressing. She never got frustrated by my asking for something a little different, and was happy to change a few small things to get the style I wanted. By the end, it was as if she had read my mind and gave me the exact cut that I wanted, and I was so happy and felt so great! For anyone with short hair, Linda is the best! I rolled into the appointment 20 minutes early because I realized that we would have very little time: I needed to leave promptly after 1 hour in order to make it to my friend's wedding. Alexis was amazing! She was totally chill about it and started my appointment early. She looked at a few photos from an album on pinterest and immediately got what I was looking for. So I've been going to Judy Jetson ever since I decided to start being a real adult and commit to a single salon aka about a year and a half. I originally chose it because of it's convenient location but kept going because I really enjoyed both the atmosphere of Judy Jetson and found an awesome stylist, Cate. Cate has done it all- from a beautiful balayage to helping me through the awkward process of growing out my bangs. I'm usually not the best at describing exactly what I want but she has always done a spectacular job despite my own communication shortcomings. Just remember to bring cash for tips! I #$@#$ hate this place and this is a long story. The decor is kitschy fun, the location is great, the stylists are mediocre, and the owner is a heinous bitch who made me cry once, and it's really hard to make me cry. Breaking my big toe didn't even make me cry, neither did breaking my nose for that matter. But the owner, man she turned me into a puddle of humiliation. I went there a few years ago (while my regular stylist from Liquid was on vacation) to get a few lowlights put in my hair (I was tired of being uber blonde and wanted a couple chunky streaks to mix it up a bit) and when the stylist (whose name I cannot remember) was done, my hair was predominantly mousy brown with a few teeny tiny blonde streaks in it that barely showed. It looked like something I could've done at home with a bottle of Clairol and a cap. It was -terrible- both in execution and in how it was the complete opposite of what I had explained in excruciating detail. I'd even brought pictures. The stylist, to his credit, looked horrified when the foils came out and my hair was unveiled. He tried to throw in a few more blonde streaks afterwards, however my hair was so fried and the dye they used was so harsh that they fell out. That's not the worst part, the worst part was the exchange I had with the owner afterwards when I tried to refuse to pay until my hair was fixed, and I swear, with no exaggeration that this is the exchange that happened (I wrote about it in some other boston hair community when it happened which is why I have it down pretty much verbatim): ME: This totally isn't what i asked for, and I feel like i was very succinct in my description of what i wanted when I spoke to you on the phone when scheduling the appointment, which was a few low lights mixed into my already blonde hair. Now my hair is over-processed and the blonde streaks added to try to cover up the dark brown are falling out and breaking. HER: That is your fault for not being descriptive in what you wanted, I don't even know what "low lights" are. Pay for your hair now, and then come back in and we will fix it next week. ME: I'd rather pay for this after it has been fixed and i am satisfied. I'm also not sure that I trust getting my hair redone here considering how bad this came out. That doesn't seem like the best way to resolve this situation. HER: NO, your job isn't to tell me what to do, it's to sit down, shut the fuck up, and get your hair done. ME: .....gets all teary..pays $80 and runs out the door, waits for regular stylist to come back from vacation to get it fixed. -------------------------------------------------- Now, you tell me, what kind of owner of an establishment tells a client who is dissatisfied with their hair to "shut the fuck up" in front of other patrons in her salon? So yeah. I've only ever very rarely seen a good cut or color come out of that place and even here I feel I'm being generous...If you want a similar funky looking place that's actually fun and in the same price range and not bastards to their clients, go to Liquid instead. read more

I also would have counseled her not to pay the exorbitant price they charged for the massacre. nevertheless, I was amazed by the extent to which a "professional" hair stylist could totally bungle such a basic cut. I used to know this girl who always had the best hair. I asked her where she got it done and she got id done by some guy here. I had heard a lot of great things about him in particular and the salon it's self. I went to him and he spent the whole time talking to his co-workers and totally, I mean TOTALLY messed up my hair. at least 6-8 inches were cut off when they were not supposed to be. I have got haircuts at Judy Jetson for over a year now, and have finally decided to call it quits. My hairdresser Jenn does a decent job, and so my spouse also got her haircut a couple of times from her. However, the last time we were there, we were treated very rudely. We were informed by phone that Jenn would be late by 15 minutes. This eventually became a tardiness of over 30 minutes. There was no profuse apology but just a basic 'thanks for waiting,' which was neither polite nor professional. This triggered our decision to finally stop going there owing to their general impolite behavior that we have been tolerating for a long time. The place is very close to where we work, and hence was very convenient. Besides, 'Autostraddle' (the LGBT magazine) also recommended it. However, the ambience created by the stylists, especially the receptionist, (Sharon I think is her name) has consistently been a very unwelcoming one. Of course, the place gets its loyal customers, who have been going there for years, but if being a regular customer for over a year does not make one 'familiar,' then it will never be so. Add to that the fact that I have short hair that I get cut every 3-4 weeks. I am certain that our decision to stop going to Judy Jetson will not be a giant loss for the business but 'caveat emptor.' read more

I went here last August after meeting three consecutive curly-haired women who had gotten a great cute from Linda C. Being curly-haired, I decided to go for it, although I had also heard the place was a bit intimidating. Let me start by saying that the haircut was OK. She didn't ruin my life or anything. But she also didn't really listen to what I wanted it (cut off several inches, take some weight off the back - instead she gave me the same haircut I already had, with some shorter bits in front and more layers). Right after that haircut I went to Greece and being of Mediterranean descent, I have to say my hair looked excellent in that climate! But once I got back to Boston, it poofed out and looked like a rectangle of frizz on my head. This doesn't happen if the cut is good. So - the cut was OK, but needed as much managing as the previous, unsatisfactory cut I had received. But what brings the rating down here is the fact that Linda C is completely bat$^!t crazy. She terrified me and was rude, strange, loud, crass and most importantly *not listening to me* the entire time. When I tried to talk to her she ignored me, but when I tried to read she chided me for not entertaining her. ?? There was a piece of hair sitting in my eye and when I went to move it she said "I know what you're thinking! You think this haircut's going to turn out bad!" I wasn't before but I am now, thanks. I just felt like I was being judged the entire time I was there, when all I wanted was a haircut. I am a travel agent and to that end always treat other service people with courtesy and humor, and was simply stunned at how unwelcoming everyone was at Judy Jetson. Starting off, I feel bad even writing this negative review because I spoke with my stylist, David, at length about nasty, bitchy reviews and how people can be cruel on Yelp. That being said, I did not come out of Judy Jetson's with a haircut I liked. So....i'll try not to be bitchy. I received fantastic customer service from the receptionist, who even gave me an umbrella to go put more quarters on my meter and it was pouring rain. Super nice. David was also super nice. I showed him a very specific photo of the haircut I wanted, to which he said he "hated it". (Hey, I can appreciate honesty, but....) His personality, though sweet, is NOT for everyone. I'm sure he dials it down for conservative seeming people, but there must have been an invisible sign on my head that said "THIS CHICK IS SUPER OPEN MINDED AND OKAY WITH VULGARITY" While I am in fact super open minded, I could have used a little less conversation about pot and blow jobs. I'll leave the rest up to your imagination. Back to the haircut. I showed David a very specific (360 degree view) photo. (Graduated, angled bob.) And while the front looks perfect, the back was a hot mess-choppy, super blunt, uneven, and wayyy shorter than what I asked. Now that it's a few weeks later, I am tolerating it, but when I got home after my hair appointment I said to myself "Sweet Jesus I look like Kate Gosselin...." I can live with it, but it was significantly different than what I asked for and the photo showed.
