For those of you looking for the highlights (I know, I'm clever): Location is awesome, ambiance is modern and relaxed, haircut by Charlotte was a perfect trim with not too much length taken off but she was able to balance and readjust the weights of my face framing layers so that the hair sits much better, color by Josh was natural, well discussed, and exactly as he described it would be, essentially the perfect sun kissed bayalage. Brittany at the front desk is super personable and patient with my questions. All in all great location, and the amenities are worth the price. Only thing to be wary of is a cash tip policy that catches people off guard and like most high end salons the blow out after the color is going to be an extra ~$50 which sucks but is more of an industry trend than a default of this salon. For those of you looking for the full story: I'm newly able to afford investing in my hair but I've been coloring it off and on since high school. After reading reviews here, I booked a hair cut with Charlotte with the goal of getting an idea of how the salon as a whole worked and what I would get if I got my hair colored here. Instead, I was distracted by how awesome Charlotte is. She did not even for a second make me feel unwelcome or like an outsider for being used to a more budget friendly salon. I got to tell her in my extremely nontechnical language what the last stylist did in my hair, and she was able to talk me through what she was planning to do without me feeling lost in the jargain. Conversation was easy, and overall the haircut was great. I booked an appointment shortly after for the color with Josh. I'm someone who gives my stylist a lot of liberty to do what they want in my hair, so if you're wondering if he takes direction well, I told him I wanted blonder, natural, and I wasn't a fan of bayalage that goes half way up the hair. I got all of those things. So if you specify tone, thickness of highlight, where you want the highlights, I can't tell you how that goes first hand. I'm sure great though, I saw someone across the way asking him to write down what he did with it and make a few edits and he did that easily. He was just as a sweet as Charlotte, and made me feel like I fit in to the crowd. All in all, great investment and I've genuinely been so happy with the results. I've never received this many complements on a cut and color in my life. As a small aside, I keep mentioning that people made me "feel at home" and I feel like I should explain that for other people who may be nervous about an upscale salon. The first cut with Charlotte was in the middle of the week after work and the salon was very empty, so it wasn't hard to relax once her and I had chemistry going over the cut. The color with Josh was on the weekend, and the salon was packed. I'm not going to lie, the environment felt very socialite-like, and not in a way that was inherently exclusive, just in a way that I didn't know how to act around. I feel like everyone in the salon probably has this anxiety, but the stylists do a great job of making it clear that you're in your own little bubble with them and that was enough to make the rest of it feel a little removed from my hair care. read more

I really liked Allison but my hair cut was so bad. I don't understand that an experienced stylist's could make such bad mistakes. I'm a former hair stylist and what happened to my hair tells me she doesn't understand otherwise this type of mistake would not have happened and At 135.00 just no. I live in seaport and I was so excited to have a salon close to me..I gave stars because management was amazing. I can't get a new cut until this is grown out-the cut is that bad. There was a hole/no hair at the perimeter in the area around and behind my ear as well as weight taken from the corner chin area. Picture the line/perimeter for a bob and those areas missing hair. . Beyond a mistake. Allison ur a nice person but I had to walk around like this read more

I went for first time on December 17th. I booked a single process online ($165) but I didn't realize it didn't include blow dry and no one told me until my hair was already with the dye. So, I asked my stylist (someone called Felix with a mustache) to add a blow dry and they told me they couldn't because one stylist was out sick. Therefore, i had to go home with my hair wet (in mid December) or was welcome to use their hair dryer to do it myself but they didn't have time. They told me it was my fault i didn't book the blow dry. They told me if i had called to book rather than book online they would have told me that. Bottom line - they offer mediocre overcharged service. A salon that tells the client to dry it yourself with our dryer is pathetic and not first class. read more

Very disappointed with my experience at Mario Russo. They cancelled the wrong appointment and I didn't find out until the same day, leaving me without the hair appointment I had organized my entire work/business schedule around. Now I have to wait until next week and rearrange everything again, yet the mistake was on their end--I'm the one who ends up paying for it. I expected better communication, attention to detail, and accountability from a salon at this level. read more

If I could give this a zero I would. I went in with very long hair and asked for a trim and wanting to leave "barely telling I could get a hair cut". I explicitly said to leave the length and freshen up layers. My stylist was VERY nice however my hair is totally BOTCHED. Not only did he chop it to my clavicle but it was uneven, lop-sided, and left pieces uncut (some were below my nipple line while others were to my nose). Worst of all he took a huge CHUNK from the right side of my face so it goes so far back it does not look like a bang - rather that half my head had a different haircut. He blew it out in rollers so although I left unhappy I did not realize what an atrocious job was done. I had to pay $200 to get it fixed and they couldn't even totally alleviate the damage given the huge chunk of hair he chopped. The company simply refunded me without an official letter or apology from management - I wish I NEVER walked into this salon. My hair is so bad I can't even wear it down. Could not NOT recommend enough. read more

I was in Boston and needed to hair colored before a wedding. The color came out incorrectly twice . I went to ask others their opinion and they all agreed- flat, dull, wrong color. I called back and was told they were too busy to squeeze me in . I called repeatedly for two hours. And at 430 so they couldn't help and I should go someplace else. Luckily, safer saw me and did a wonderful job! The stylists were lovely people but disappt the management didn't care about an unhappy customer. read more

As a visitor to Boston, I called to make an appointment today and was told that they needed to set up a profile for me. The usual stuff and then at the end asked for my credit card to keep on file. I wasn't comfortable with this and explained I'd prefer to give them this info after the services were performed. Was told they couldn't make an appointment without it! So much for service. Made my appointment some where else. read more

Exceptional covid precautions with significant distancing between clients. The nearest other client was more than 12 feet away and they were careful to not have more than one person at the shampoo station at a time. Paul did an amazing job toning and highlighting my hair after quarantine; best highlights I've had in Boston. The Brazilian blowout is high quality and included the Keratin complex shampoo/conditioner to take home. The salon is a little pricy, but worth being worry free. read more

Love the way I'm treated but treat your employees better. I've been going here for about 18 months and all 3 of my stylists ( all who have been great ) have left. This makes me not want to go back as I worry the next stylist I fall in love with will leave ! I've gotten color here, cuts, and Brazilian blowouts- all fantastic but it looks like I shouldn't be getting attached. read more

I came here a couple of years ago cause it was close to my work. I needed a trim but got a lot more cut than what I wanted. The haircut wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. I like my hair layered and blended but it wasn't really blended I could tell where the layers stayed and ended which I didn't love. The salon is clean and the staff is friendly. read more

Charlotte is the BEST! I love this spot. Easy to get in and out, upscale vibe without any pretense.

I work @ Vertex across the street and had a hair crisis last week, and thankfully found Hunter...who was nice enough to listen to my concerns, counsel me accordingly, and give me basically free advice even though I didn't get a cut with her (yet). Hunter advised me to use vinegar in my hair to wash out some bad product I was using that I purchased @ Stilliti on Newbury Street. She was OK with me coming in not once, not twice, but 3 times even to go over what was happening to my hair. She assured me it was not hormonal (and not forever) but gave me unbiased, real advice-- THANK YOU. She did advise me on some products they sell there but didn't "sell" me on them and was totally fine with me using good old apple cider vinegar vs. the expensive stuff they sell. I was really taken aback by how NON PRETENTIOUS they were here and plan to get hair my cut with Hunter next time I am due in 2017. A great addition to the neighborhood and I am excited to make them my regular go-to salon in the City! -Tamara read more

Fantastic experience. Tyler gave me an excellent cut and blow out. I love the results! Beautiful salon, great location, fab new style. What's not to love?! read more

Let me begin this with: I am not a hair person. I had not had my hair cut in about 18 months, and after a hack job of a home haircut I came in to get it fixed. I never blow dry my hair, I don't own hair products, and I keep my hair in its long layered cut precisely because it is the least amount of work. The reason I stopped getting my hair cut was because after bouncing around all over the place, I still hadn't found a stylist who totally understood what I wanted -- they always tried to change me, telling me I should take better care of my hair, and I always walked out with their idea of what my hair should look like, rather than what I asked for. I stopped in to the Fan Pier location yesterday, mainly because a couple weeks ago they gave out 25% off coupons to new customers at a neighborhood event (I work around here). I took a gamble is requesting a junior stylist - while I have had some BAD haircuts from student stylists, I trusted that Mario Russo was a high-class enough salon that their junior stylists would be good. And since the normally $50 haircut would be under $40, I asid what the hell, it can't be worse than what I have! That's a long intro, but the point is that this salon is so good that it might have actually converted me into the kind of person who cuts her hair (crazy!). I had Nicky, who was super sweet, and didn't force small talk, and didn't make any jokes about my badly-cut hair (yes, I have had stylists laugh at my hair before). She didn't try to convert me to being a "hair person," she just gave me a ROCKING cut that was exactly what I wanted, and treated me to an awesome blowout since I don't own a blowdryer and she wanted me to try having straight hair for a day. The salon is SPOTLESS, and Nicky and I actually talked about it (I watch too much Tabatha's Salon Takeover...), so I guarantee you the whole place is clean. It's modern, with huge windows and none of that burned-hair smell you get at other salons. The receptionist was also really sweet, and helpful, and I was offered a beverage when I came in. I love this place, I love my hair, and I am a die-hard salon-hater. Just be warned, TIPS MUST BE CASH OR CHECK! read more

I have been going to see Tyler and Josh for over a year now. I decided to try this salon for 2 reasons, one proximity to my work and two the reviews I read on here. I will keep it short and sweet. Josh has never failed to give me the perfect single process color. It is always a beautiful shade of red and has serious staying power. He's also such a joy to chat with and makes sure that the customer is 100% happy. Tyler is attentive and always gives my hair a fresh new look. He listens to my ideas and it always feels like a collaborative effort. I trust him more than any other stylist I've had in the Boston area. Tyler also is a gem, he remembers what we chatted about and gives great advice as to how to style day to day. If you're on the fence about trying this salon take my word and just go in once and you'll be hooked. Josh and Tyler are fantastic but the whole salon is a great spot in general. read more

I found out about this place after eating at the excellent restaurant upstairs (Sam's). I loved the location and was looking for an excuse to come back to this beautiful place right on the water! It was very easy to book an appointment. The location is very easy to get to from the Mass Pike. Up until a couple of weeks ago they had free parking in a small adjoining parking lot but with new construction you can either park on the street or valet for 10 dollars. Both options are easy and still very convenient. Tyler, a junior stylist, did an incredible job cutting and styling my hair!! He took a solid amount of time talking through how I usually do my hair, what I was looking for, and gave his assessment of what would be best for my face and hair. He made some very simple adjustments to my hair that made a huge difference! My hair was feeling kinda flat and after his cut it felt full of body and style! His blow out lasted for a good couple of days and he gave me great recommendations for styling products and how to repeat what he did. I have been looking for a place to get my hair done since moving to Boston three years ago and I think I finally found it! The whole experience was excellent!! The facility was clean and nice without feeling pretentious. And again it was a beautiful location which is a great reason in itself to visit!! read more

I visited the salon today and overall it was a wonderful experience. The salon is clean and taking clear actions to ensure no spread of COVID. I had Kat as a colorist and she was outstanding... I was able to show her a few pictures of what I wanted and she was meticulous in her work. I haven't loved my color like this in such a long time. It took a while (over 3 hours), but well worth it! read more

I have only positive things to say about Tyler (cut) and Josh (color). They both are SO talented... and very eager to have you walk out happy and beautiful. I've been there several times in the past two years and I would definitely recommend. This is a clean, modern, friendly salon with genuinely nice employees. I don't treat myself to high end salons very often, but if my schedule (and budget) would allow I absolutely wouldn't go ANYWHERE ELSE! read more

I usually never go to the same hair salon twice because I'm usually unhappy with the result, however- I had my hair colored at Mario Russo three months ago by Josh and I came back today and Josh did an even better job than the last time. Charlotte gave me a cut and blow out and also did a phenomenal job. HIGHLY recommend. The wash chairs also have massage mechanisms as well which is super relaxing while you're getting your hair washed. Will definitely be coming back for my next cut and color. read more

I would give this place 0 stars, but Yelp wouldn't let me and plus after I called to complain about my experience and bad haircut the manager was very considerate and spent a good amount of time listening to me, and also offered to have me come back to see another stylist, so based on that 1 star is ok. But I will never go back here or recommend for cuts. The reason I chose this salon was because I saw the Oribe products in the window and called and asked if they do continuing education with Oribe educators and they said yes. I felt if their stylists were receiving that kind of training I would be in good hands. But this was the second worst haircut of my life - I honestly think supercuts would probably have done a better job and I am not being sarcastic. I explained very specifically to the stylist what and even how my haircuts usually are done (I got my last cut in CA where I am from and asked my stylist there how best to explain his technique to someone). I have a lot of hair so typically it's just a matter of taking weight out from the top and reshaping the hair. I told her what not to do, as I've had other not-so-good cuts in Boston and from my experience with those cuts I know what doesn't work, and she did exactly what I said not to do. When I told her that is not how I like it to be cut, she said that it didn't matter because in the end it was all the same result just different techniques to get there. She also said the reason why I don't find a good stylist in Boston is because I have so much hair and people dont' want to deal with it cause they are lazy, and then she told me next time I call for an appointment to tell the front desk to add on an extra 30 minutes because I have a lot of hair. I have never been told this by a stylist nor ever experienced a problem getting in and out of a salon in 60 minutes. It's a haircut not brain surgery, if you know what you're doing a cut is no more than 20 minutes and then you blow dry and style, and finishing touches if needed at the end! When it came to the blow dry she used ABSOLUTELY no product in my hair and I came out looking like Farrah Fawcett, seriously. It was a yucky 70's feather looking blow dry! So ugly. But the worst was the days and weeks that followed. My hair was awful. I tried to blow dry and style on my own and nothing worked to make it look nice. She didn't take enough weight out so it was very flat, she chopped off a chunk in the front, when I was trying to grow out bangs, so even a simple ponytail looked like crap cause hair wouldn't stay back. I finally went back to my usual East Coast guy in NYC and even he said it looked like she had done 2 different haircuts, one on the botton and a different one on top. Anyway, I was really hoping to find someone good in Boston because going to NYC every 3-4 months seems like it will start to get tiresome, but after this disaster 3-4 hours drive for 3-4 hours of amazing hair is well worth it. Also, the reason I am giving 1 star to the salon and not mentioning the stylists name is because overall this stylist is a representation of the salon and what they consider good service and a good cut. This stylist said she had worked there for 10 years, and the price of her cuts is $65 (pretty inexpensive but not cheap either after you throw in $10/parking and a tip). If the salon can keep someone on board for that many years and at this point in their career is giving a cut as bad as the one I got, I absolutely will never go to that salon again or recommend it. Stylists should get better with experience. To me this just means their standards aren't high enough. read more

I've been going here for a year and a half now and can't go anywhere else. Josh has done my ombre in 3 different shades already and each time is better than the last (he is also funny as hell). The one time he dyed it red, he ended up re-dying it that same day because he didn't think the first color was what I had wanted. Talk about quality service (I'd much rather stay an extra 30-45 minutes than leave with dull hair). Natasha (Hunter) has cut and styled my hair each time too and it always comes out looking great. They definitely make a great team. If you're looking for awesome hair, make sure to ask for Josh for coloring and Natasha for cuts! read more

Tyler did a fabulous job transforming my hair from boring hohum to fantastic! This was the first time that I thought - yah, this is a stylist that I would follow wherever he goes, he is that good at what he does. I've never had this many compliments on a cut. Please Mario Russo Salon keep him at your salon because it is priceless to have someone that good only steps from where I work! I will be back and I will recommend him highly to colleagues! Other pros - easy to book an appointment (especially for non-planners like myself), very pleasant front desk (they offer tea, coffee, water immediately upon arrival), cool spa atmosphere of salon. Cons - I really can't think of any. I'll mention to be prepared to pay tips in cash, but once I knew that I just came prepared with cash so not really a con as much as an fyi... read more

TYLER cut & styled my hair and I'm picky! Fabulous job! I'll be going back to him for my haircut.

Let me start by saying that Jamie Macklin is the BEST stylist/colorist in Boston. I followed him from Kent Newton to Mario Russo, and while I miss the warm atmosphere of Kent Newton and the glass wine that was always offered, I would follow Jamie to the end of the Earth (or at least to the end of Boston suburbs). Mario Russo Seaport is clean and sleek, but as with any modern space, human comfort is often a bit of an afterthought. For instance, if you go to Mario Russo at a certain time of day/late afternoon, expect to be blinded by the light pouring through the building's glass exterior; the windows have no shades to moderate the light. I could go on, but there's no point because I'll be going to Mario Russo Seaport for as long as Jamie works there. read more

I came here with my natural hair color untouched and asked for them to dye it a soft natural looking brown. The stylist dyed it jet black and put white highlights in and I looked like I had a witches wig on. It's been a process to strip the color out. My hair is totally damaged and nobody seems able to fix it. Horrible work. read more

Two stars only because the first time I got my hair colored here, it was a big improvement from what I walked in with. Josh is definitely talented. The price was pretty outrageous but I was willing to keep paying it if I was getting results that I felt were worth my time and money. Cut to about 6 weeks later when I went in for my gloss appointment. I made the appt at the front desk before leaving my last appt and specifically asked for Josh, as he had made the recommendation for this treatment. They had me wait about 20 minutes and another stylist approached me to ask if I was ready. Figuring Josh wasn't there I just went along with it (turns out he was there but working on another client - totally fine but front desk should've let me know I'd be seeing a different stylist, preferably ahead of time). I am unfamiliar with the gloss process, but told this stylist that that's what I was there for - just a gloss. About an hour/hour and a half later, we're done and I see pretty much no difference to my hair at all. Not a great feeling, but I make a mental note to never do a gloss again, and I'm grateful that I had checked the prices for glosses beforehand and they weren't bad. I go to pay and the girl at the front desk tells me an amount more than twice that of a gloss. I ask her "why is the amount so high, I only had a gloss and they are half that price?" She just shrugs and says that this is what the stylist told her he did. Since obviously she doesn't want to doublecheck for me, I ask him myself and instead of explaining to me about the price difference or saying sorry, I made a mistake, or saying ANYTHING to me at all, he looks right past me and tells the girl at the front desk to charge me for a gloss. WHAT? So you either didn't listen to what I wanted when I walked in (and what was on the schedule since I made that specific appt weeks ago and it should've been written down) or you did give me a gloss and just wanted to try and get some extra money out of me. Either way, you don't think I deserve some sort of explanation? SHADY. So obviously I'll never be going back and it's a shame because the salon is right in my neighborhood. I've spoken to my neighbors about this and they're pretty wary of visiting this salon now too. It's really gross when a "high end" salon resorts to such money-making tactics and tries to take advantage of people they think won't notice or care. I work hard for my money - and I shouldn't have to worry about protecting it from a shady hairdresser. read more

I hesitate writing this as I don't want my new favorite stylist (Tyler) to become so popular that I won't be able to get an appointment. In all seriousness, THE BEST haircut I've received. Since moving to Boston, I've struggled to find a stylist that could do exactly what I requested and walk out of the salon wanting to book another appointment. He give him 5 stars on everything. He took the time to really understand the style I was trying to achieved, didn't get scissor crazy nor was there any of that awkward chit chat that seems to arise when it's your first encounter. I wanted to go waltz around town after my cut/ style. It was that damn good. I'm already looking forward to my next appointment. read more
