Wanted to get my bangs cut at 4:02pm. Called Hair Screen to ask about a walk-in spot, she said come on in. Got there a few minutes later (I live two blocks away). She had someone in the chair, finished them up within a minute, then It was my turn. I showed her exactly the fringe trim I desired, and she set to work. She was done in two minutes. Budget brides in the area - GO THERE! I had my hair done there as a bridesmaid and as a bride and they cost only $60 each! that's right...only $60! This is hard to find in Boston. And since the owner used to work for a Korean TV station, she was really FAST and good at creating hairstyles. My first experience was as a bridesmaid. There were 4 of us plus the bride and we took turns getting our hair done. For each BM, she studied the photo we showed her for 5 seconds (literally) and then BAM! she produced the hairstyle perfectly in 30 mins! I was so amazed! Another bonus is that she has a table and a few chairs in the salon, and my friend (the bride) got the ok from the owner for us to do our own make-up there. It worked out perfectly that we got ready together while we waited for our turns for our hair. So when it was time to plan for my own wedding, I knew my bridesmaids and I had to go there for the budget & speed. I didn't do a trial with her as I trusted her work but I did have a hard time deciding between 2 hairstyles. On the day of my wedding, I showed her pics of the 2 hairstyles and she picked out the one that I was a little bit more hesitant about. Maybe because I am also Asian she was very insistent that the one she picked out was better (kinda like the way your mom talks to you). She said my preferred choice makes me look old. -___-" In the end I went with her choice and I was REALLY glad I did! She definitely knew what she was talking about and it was so beautifully done. As a bride, she spent more time on my hair but I'd say it was still no longer than 40 to 45 mins, which was perfect for my tight schedule. Timely and fast service 2. Nice styling 3. The owner of the salon is an expert; I have a lot of hair, and thick hair, but she knew exactly how to thin it out 4. She gives good recommendations and is honest with you (I was going to donate my hair but she told me that it would end up too short if I cut off the necessary 8 in, so I decided not to) 5. Hair Screen offers perms and coatings and dying and all the Asian/Korean treatments you want for your hair 6. Walk-ins are welcome 7. Reasonable price ($30) I highly recommend this place! I've had three hair cuts at Hair Screen so far and I've loved it every time. MUCH better than any other Korean/ Asian salons I've been to so far and by far the most reasonably priced (I think it was $30 or $35 for women's hair cut). I love that she has an honest opinion about your hair and does not try to sell you any additional services like many other places do. And because she runs the whole place by herself, she's very punctual and gets right down to business. I highly recommend calling a couple of days in advance to book an appointment. [Park at Blanchard's. Easiest thing to do with limited street parking.] This is my first Yelp review ever... and only made an account so that I can give my 2 cents about Hair Screen. I am Korean, and have very long, thick hair. My hairstyle of choice for the past decade has been the long layered look with angled front, coming down to a V in the back. Sounds very simple, but, having said that I have not had great luck with finding a stylist that can get it just right. Also living in RI with limited choices as far as salons that really know how to do Asian hair, I ventured out to Boston after seeing the good reviews of Hair Screen. Prior to choosing Hair Screen, I compared this salon to the likes of Lee's Hair Story and Scissor Sound... but I am SO BEYOND HAPPY that I gave Hair Screen a shot at the end of the day. The owner does everything herself, she is very sweet and thorough. I did bring pictures of the style I wanted and she took one look at it and knew what I wanted right away. The layers came out great (where my hair still looks obviously long with nice flow to the way each of the layers fall), as did the angles in the front, and my hair falls with ease in just the right way. She then went in and thinned out my hair quite a bit, and this was my favorite part as this makes a huge difference in feeling nice and light as opposed to heavy and boxy. My hair is incredibly annoying to work with as I have lots of heat damage, as well as color... but she worked very patiently and did not skip any parts or try to rush at all. She is a perfectionist and definitely has great skill! I went out that night with the cut and style she gave me and received so many compliments. On top of it all, she only charged me $35 for the cut on my long, obnoxious hair! (My hair easily reaches the middle of my back and it was a lot of work re-doing all the layers and angles). Of course, she deserved a great tip which I was happy to give her. She made me feel so welcome and felt comfortable right away. Hair Screen is my favorite and preferred salon in Boston/Allston. Before coming here, I had been searching for a salon that could cut my hair exactly how I wanted it to be cut. The owner showed me suggestions of styles in her hair styles book that would look good on my head and I listened to her and was not disappointed. I now recommend her to everyone I know! I like this place a lot. The owner is very friendly and good at what she does. She doesn't overbook her schedule so you are typically seen right on time. There isn't a designated parking spot but you can usually find parking on the street unless you are here on a weekend or during dinner time. read more

I came in here on a whim because I was in the area and needed a cut. I was not disappointed. She took me right after a father and son, whose hair she cut quickly and efficiently. After nicely asking what I wanted, to which I said "short," she gave me her recommendation for the length and style of my hair. That's a big plus for me because I hate when stylists hear short and make me look like a military brat. The cut was quick, simple, clean, AND styled nicely. I recently went to this hair salon in hopes of finding a reasonably priced haircut from a hairdresser who knew what she was doing with hair. I was not disappointed. Like the reviewer below has posted, she accepts walk-ins, but I recommend you call ahead because she did have to turn away 2 customers who decided to walk in 15 minutes before closing time (or you could just not do that). As long as you make it clear to her what you want, she will do exactly that. I went with two other friends, and they were both more than happy with the haircuts that they walked away with. Being the good friend that I am, I let my friends get their hair done before me partly so I could observe the hairdresser. Just from the way she touched their hair, and from the way she skillfully tousled my hair as she was cutting it, I could tell she knew what she was doing. I felt at ease trusting her with my hair even though it was my first visit. If you ask her what she thinks would be suitable for your face shape, head shape, forehead shape, whatever shape, she'll offer her thoughts on the matter. California is home for me, and I've never ventured to trust my haircut to a hairdresser out here in Boston, but if I ever need one in the future, to Hair Screen I shall go! I came here last month as an experiment, because I was getting sick of Crystal Hair Salon ruining my hair style every single time (I guess that's what I get for trying to keep it cheap). I paid about $35 including tip for a full cut and wash after, and I could not have been happier when I walked out. She took the time and attention to check out the styling of my hair before going at it. I had just come back from Hong Kong and so I had super short shaved sides, long hair at the top that swung to the side, and even a shaved line defining the boundary of these two extremes. It's a challenge to maintain the styling (I know for sure Crystal Hair Salon will ignore it and just shave it all), but this lady did it! Sadly, hair grows, and so I have an appointment to go back to Hair Screen tomorrow afternoon. She's going to be my go-to hair dresser in Boston for quite some time in the foreseeable future. read more

I've been to almost every hair salon in Allston for a haircut and this place is the best. The lady that owns the store is also the only one that cuts hair. She is very nice and does a great job. Make sure you make an appointment before you go otherwise you might wait awhile. The interior is a little outdated but that should matter since your going there for a cut. Also, if you have product in your hair she washes it before the cut and washes it again after the cut. read more

This place is pretty good! Got a haircut for just $35 (women's haircut). Let me preface first by saying this: In general, I tend to dislike getting my hair cut -- I usually end up paying a bunch of money and ending up not really pleased with the results (perhaps it's on account of my Asian hair..?) However, I was pretty ysatisfied with my experience at Hair Screen. My hair is very thick, and when I told her that I wanted it lighter, she delivered! Made it lighter with thinning shears, creating a bunch of subtle layers. She doesn't take walk-ins, so you do need to make an appointment. She also doesn't chit chat with you much during the haircut, which I actually prefer -- I can tell she's concentrating and being meticulous instead. Edit: After going home and sitting on it for a few weeks, it seemed like the back of the haircut wasn't always even.. but I seem to have often have these problems, even at other salons.. so i would say it's maybe no better and no worse than other salons. but much cheaper, so that's great. read more

I am always on the lookout for a hair stylist who can handle asian hair that is not in chinatown (too annoying to get to), so I decided to give hair screen a try based on the good reviews. I got my hair colored and cut. The stylist(owner?) did not seem to put in too much effort into understanding what I wanted and I felt like she rushed the coloring job. The cut was ok - i asked for long layers but she gave me more of a plain one-length. And it ended up being costing a lot more than I expected. Some of this may be a language barrier (she's korean), which may also explain some of the higher ratings. But I will not be returning. read more

I LOVE my new haircut! I was nervous about getting an undercut (half-shave) for the first time, the most drastic cut I've ever gotten. My friend recommended this place (she got her bridal updo here and has been a loyal customer for years), and got us two appointments for the next day. (The owner is really nice and accommodating and it was a cinch to get the Saturday afternoon time slot we wanted.) After a thorough and relaxing shampoo and condition, I showed her a photo of the bangs and layers I wanted, along with another photo of a half-shave. She studied the photo for a few seconds and then recreated it EXACTLY. When I asked her what number razor she was planning to use, and she responded with the same number I had in mind, I felt confident that I was in the hands of a professional. To my delight, the end result was exactly what I had imagined! She is FAST and efficient, (wash, cut & blow-dried the both of us in under an hour!), without skimping on the details. She did an amazing job razor-thinning my thick, wiry hair (very meticulous before and after my blow-dry). I am so HAPPY with my new 'do! And she is a pro at handling all hair types: my friend's hair is soft and super fine- she gave her cute layers and blow-dried it to make it look big and voluminous. When we arrived, she was finishing up a young man's haircut, and by the time we left, she had two more guys waiting in line- seems like the go-to place for stylish men, too. The store is very clean and comfortable, with easy street/lot parking. I've tried so many salons in the area, always leaving either disappointed or severely overcharged. I went 4-5 times over the past year, and my experience turned less and less pleasant and eventually I am looking for alternatives. The price is ridiculously cheap and she seems to be always on time, so I had no complain for a first few times. However, it just seemed I just cannot convey what I want (less layer or heavy medium cut..etc. not so complicated), or she cares less and goes with what she likes to cut. So I just get super layers fluffy hair or a bob looks like a traditional Japanese doll. The place is small and clean, only three seats, but I found that quite nice since I was the only customer and had super attentive service. As a result, there was no time wasting with dealing with other customers, and I was able to get out with a wash, trim and curly perm in record time! 1.5 hours! The owner is a very nice, quiet, Korean woman, who did everything herself: washed, blow-dried, cut, permed, and styled. She asked what I wanted, and gave a few recommendations about how to care for my hair. She is very skillful, knows what she's doing, and worked quickly and easily. I felt at ease, and trusted her. I'm very happy with my new curly hair. The price is excellent. I had a perm in Scissor Sound and was shocked at having to pay $230+tip, and it took 3 hours because it was busy. Here, she charged $130 for medium length, and $150 for long hair + tip. I recommend an appointment so she knows you're coming, but walk-ins are accepted. read more

After reading all the reviews of Hair Screen on Yelp, I decided to try it out. I called around noon and luckily, the stylist/owner was able to fit me in at 4:30. I came in around 20 minutes early (since I had nothing better to do) and looked through several of her photo albums. There were tons of pictures of her with celebrities and models from the 80's and 90's and they all looked so fab! I was definitely impressed. Before my haircut, I had medium length hair that was cut straight across ($45 bucks from Dellaria Salon in Brookline. Never going back there again! Such a waste of money.) Asian hair is typically really fine, thin, and straight, but mine is really thick and there's so much of it! I've been wanting to get a bob for a while now but was worried that my thick hair might just fluff out or that the stylist might cut too much and make my round face look even rounder. As I mentioned before, my appointment was scheduled at 4:30 and she seated me at the wash station exactly at that time. Maybe I've had bad luck with hair salons in Boston, but oftentimes I'm seated way after the appointment time. Anyway, I brought a bunch of pictures of hair styles I was interested in and showed the stylist. After like one second of glancing at the photos, she knew exactly what I wanted and demonstrated how she would cut my hair. Overall, my hair cut turned out just as I had wanted. I am so impressed by her efficiency and attention to detail. So if you want to get a haircut at a fixed time, then this isnt your place. This is the second time I've been here, and the second time I've had to wait nearly an hour.
