I had a pretty bad experience at Sanela. I have been here many times before but first time with Helen. I showed her exactly what I wanted and she just cut my hair randomly. I even found one long hair that Wasn't cut. The layers are out of sync, I can't even part my hair properly. She also made some inappropriate jokes about what I do. All in all it was a horrible experience and my hair looks really really bad and there is no way I can set them because they look like they are cut randomly and unequally. read more

Some of the facts and assumptions that the owner of the salon stated in her response to my original review are not correct. I don't habitually make appointments for color without scheduling a blow out. I have gone to the same exceptional hair stylist since 2012 (an owner at a salon on Newbury Street), and she has always done a blowout, except for maybe four times in 11 years, when she's squeezed me into do a quick one-process color but didn't have time to dry my hair. Also, it's not correct that I booked this color appointment and "declined a blowout." The first time I went to Sanela salon in June (when my hairdresser was sick and I needed a one-process before traveling the next day), the receptionist kindly squeezed me and told me the stylist wouldn't have time to dry my hair, and that was fine with me. When I made the second appointment in October at Sanela for a one-process because my regular stylist salon was on vacation, I was NOT being squeezed in last minute. However, the receptionist didn't mention anything about drying my hair (she didn't ask if I wanted it done and she didn't tell me it couldn't be done). It also didn't occur to me ask because, in hindsight, I think I am just used to my stylist booking one automatically--or it's included in her service/price or something. I definitely assumed one was booked though and consequently came fully dressed up and ready to go to a work event in Boston straight from the hair appointment. I referred to this situation being caused by a "scheduling error," and I think that's a fair description. I can't know why the receptionist didn't ask if I wanted one when I booked my second appointment, and I'm sure it was an unfortunate oversight. But the reality is that this oversight put me in the bind of having wet hair and not being able to go to my event because I had to go home and dry my hair instead. I was indeed upset that I couldn't use a hairdryer. I had to be at that event in Boston and my hair was wet. How would you feel? I did keep trying to explain that it wouldn't take me long to dry my hair and that I had an event to attend in attempt to try to get them to see the the bind I was in. I explained I didn't have time to go home to dry my hair, and I said I couldn't believe this policy because I had never encountered it before. I wasn't rude to them, but I was flustered and upset that I would miss my event. The manager didn't offer any solutions and only justified the policy, which was invalidating and escalated the situation, so I told her I just wanted to pay and leave. There was no point in continuing to have the same conversation over and over. This brusque and dismissive reply to my original review is the tone that is set in this salon. If something doesn't go right, expect to be treated like you are the problem. There is no accountability or care or concern. And this is why my husband (a former regular client) and I will not be returning--and why I'm taking the time to write an accurate review of my experience at this salon. read more

By far the most scarring hair experience of my life, and that includes the time I was three and my neighbor cut all my hair off with safety scissors. I came here about six weeks ago for balayage and a cut. I walked out with a section on top and in front of my head completely mauled by chemicals that were left on for way too long. As a result I have an entire section of hair that is two - three inches long and fried. It's impossible to keep them down so I am constantly walking around with hair sticking up off my head. I think that this error also threw off the stylists cutting skills because I also have a botched job going on with my layered cut as well. The cut was free because of the error... and that kept me quiet for these past six weeks. It was only when I was getting a blowout for a wedding and the stylist was horrified that something like this could happen AND then that the people who were responsible could feel ok charging me for the expensive part (the balayage) that I snapped to my senses. Yes, it's hair and it grows back.... but I'm not Harry Potter and I can't regrow this $hit overnight. Thanks to Sanela Salon, my hair is ruined for probably a year or more and its making me miserable. Run, don't walk, away from this place. read more

I love this place. I had really long hair for years and wanted a change. Did some research and found Diana. She's did a really nice cut. It was short in the back and angled to the front. I asked her for a cut that was short but flattered my round face and she did exactly that. I trust her opinion and what she thinks I should do. I've been there twice so far and each time I am just as happy. The salon itself is also quiet and clean. Exactly what you'd expect in a relaxing atmosphere. The cut is $50. Again, what you should expect to pay for a good cut, but not over the top. I called around and was getting 100+ quotes. Too much. $50 is reasonable to me for the quality. I haven't gotten my hair colored so I can't speak to that. I wish they offered eye brow waxing for convenience but not a big deal. I'm going to continue to go here. :) read more

I saw Anna for a color consultation and she squeezed me in and did the color (which I wasn't expecting). Diana cut my hair and another staff member (I can't remember her name!) washed my hair and gave me the best (and longest) scalp massage I've ever had in a salon. My color turned out amazing and the cut looks so great. The whole team at Sanela did a fantastic job, from the person who handed me sanitizer at the door to the person who rang me up at the end. I've now been going to Sanela for over 6 months (always with Shawneen), and although her price went up about $10, it's still worth it. (My other hairdresser left Dellaria, so it couldn't have worked out more perfectly!) The entire staff is friendly and respectful and Sanela, the owner, greets me by name and always has a compliment for my hair or a friendly word. Shawneen works with my comfort level and taste every time to get a style/cut we both love. I get SO many compliments on my hair! And while she does recommend their products, she doesn't push them. She even tells me to use the ones I have at home first, as they do have an expiration date. Also, she told me not to see her more frequently than every 8 weeks for a cut (except for a complimentary bang trim every 4 weeks). That is so impressive to me, because she's not trying to get more appointments (aka money) out of me by having me come more often. Shawneen LOVES working with hair and it totally shows. She is always completely booked (so, actually... I shouldn't be raving about her because then I'll never get an appointment!). I just got an amazing haircut at Sanela with Shawneen. She did a great job cleaning up my split ends while keeping my length and adding tons of layers. I really can't remember the last time I have loved a haircut as much as this one! I highly recommend this salon, not just for the great work, but it is also super clean, I was greeted the second I walked in, my coat was taken and I was offered a beverage. My favorite part was the purse hooks they have at the styling stations, so no more purses on the ground or hung up out of sight! OUTSTANDING SERVICE, CUT/STYLE, & GREAT PRICES! This review is for Jamie and she is absolutely amazing, detailed oriented, and thoughtful. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. Jamie asked if I wanted anything to drink and I said water. She then followed up with room temperature or refrigerated? That kind of detailed follow up question I thought was really considerate and thoughtful. She really took the extra length to make you feel like "royalty" as she puts it. She then handed me a black robe (never wore one from a salon..felt pretty special haha). I talked to her about my hair. At the time, my length was to my nipple area. I said I LOVED my length but the split ends were really really bad. I told her I liked layers, side bangs, I curl my hair all the time and like to run my fingers through them (thus volume, texture, and movement are important to me). She told me exactly what she was thinking for me that allowed me to keep quite some length and get a fresh cut. She also said I had traditional layers (layers that laid on top of one another) and she wanted to try her own style (layers that laid to the side of each other for more movement and fall). I was SOLD! We went to shampoo and condition my hair. The products smelled amazing!! Very fruity. She told me she really liked talking to her clients but she's going to be quiet during the hair washing so i can enjoy it. She gave me a nice scalp massage and she really took her time. Gave me a tip of using a wide tooth comb to brush through conditioner to cover all my hair and not leave my scalp oily. The cut was done both wet and dry. She has a very unique style to her cutting and it performed MAGIC when she was done. Her blow out was also so beautiful and gave me the bounce (esp on my ends) that I've never seen done before or could do myself. I just thought I didn't have that type of hair (Asian hair). The end result was seriously so beautiful. And she gives complimentary bang trims in which you can call the morning of (recommends tues/wed, not fri/sat but if need be, she said she'd try her best). Overall, Jamie spent 1 hour on my hair, which is the longest anyone has ever spent on my hair. She had cut my cut 2 inches from my shoulders which still felt and looked feminine like I wanted with my length. The layers and how it fell was striking and stunning. It was $45 total which was way worth it: friendly service, careful analysis of hair, unique cut & style. I will DEFINITELY be back and it'll definitely be my go-to salon from now on. FYI, Jamie told me that I didn't need to come back 6-8 weeks. Just every 3 or 4 months to get a fresh trim. I thought she gave great advice that mainly benefited me rather than her because that would be less money for her. So, that's how sweet she is!! Definitely give this place a shot! Went to get highlights and a cut at Sanela after many months and I can't say enough about the measures they are taking to keep customers safe. I was unsure about my appointment initially but the clear instructions and precautions posted on their website that were repeated in person put me at ease. They also follow through on the precautions they post (masks and face shields for employees, hand sanitizing at the door, etc.) and that made me feel incredibly safe. I've gotten tons of compliments on my hair since then and want to thank everyone at Sanela for such a fantastic job!!! read more

I tried to explain to the hair dresser that I wanted to keep my hair long, maybe an inch and a half off, to the point where it tucks behind my ear. I came in wearing a cap and tried to demonstrate how my hair usually lays for her after my hair was washed. She cut me off saying "no I get what you want you don't have to keep explaining." She clearly had not gotten what I wanted. She proceeded to take off so much hair that it is poofed out at the sides from lack of heft. Additionally my cowlicks, which usually are weighted down fine, are poking upward. Upon seeing this she comments "yea you may what to use some product it'll help keep them down." After I reminded her that I don't use hair product she just shrugged. Overall horrible experience, would not recommend men to go here if you have longer hair and want it to be cut in a manner that is considerate of your actual request. read more

I had her at another salon a while ago, and was so happy to see her not just because she is a great stylist. She is incredibly personable and funny. I had a pretty disappointing experience considering that I had read so many positive reviews about the salon. I decided to try this salon in particular for how they are approaching precautions with COVID-19. I came in with long hair and wanted to get a few inches trimmed + refresh my balayage especially after the past few months. I started my appointment with Ana, who was the colorist. I explained that I wanted 3 inches off and visually showed her exactly where. She said that she'll preemptively cut that part off to make the process easier. Sure, that all makes sense. Ana starts cutting and it was clear that there was not much thought put into the blunt cut because I ended up with one side shorter but somewhat close to the length I wanted - and the other side several inches shorter than that. In all, I had lost at least half a foot of hair when I explicitly asked for the three inches. When I noted that this is clearly not what I asked, she did not have any adequate response to the mistake besides apologizing. The color ultimately turned out fine but was overshadowed by my botched cut. By the time I got to Diana for the cut, she did an amazing job to rescue what was left of my hair and was patient, understanding, and took her time to consult me every part of the decision. I am just so disappointed by how careless it felt like the first part of my appointment was taken and surprised how it even happened in the first place. I recognize that mistakes happen but this feels like a huge enough error that I can't justify returning. I will at least give credit where credit is due for the COVID-19 precautions and safety considerations. read more

I made an appointment via email on a Saturday evening for the following Tuesday early morning and they assured me there was a spot as I was in a situation where I had to get my hair done quickly. After several messages back and forth (while they were still open rather than asking me to call them) they ended our exchange with "awesome see you Tuesday - but we need a credit a card on file to make your appointment" and then they closed the store so I couldn't call - they were closed Sunday and the holiday Monday - there was no time to call them and of course when I showed up Tuesday they would not do my hair. Never going back here again! I had a consultation with Anna who supposed to be a senior stylist, for a balayage 2 weeks prior to me actual appointment where I showed a picture of what I wanted. On my 1st appointment she didn't get the color correct and told Me after it was because I needed to come multiple times for my color to lift, but never mentioned this during my consultation. I came back a week later to get my color corrected but instead she did a very poor job at my "balayage" where there is not natural transition and it looks like a someone just streaked my hair starting at the roots. I was so upset I just left and went directly to BEbe spa where they fixed my hair for a fraction of the cost. Diana gives a great hair cut but the fact that I paid $245 for my "balayage" that came out like this is very unfortunate and I will never go back. read more

When I walked out my hair was a very light bleached blonde, instead of the A-line I had shown her a photo of, I had a bob with short layers in the front. Horrible customer service, WORST experience I have had with a hair salon during COIVD. While calling to schedule appointment they did not tell me that if I cancelled the appointment that my credit card would be charged. On the day of the appointment I was unable to make it due to a work emergency. Get to know they've charged my credit card. When I called to ask them about them about it, I got yelled at by the staff and the manager. She literally screamed at me, while I'm in the hospital taking care of COVID patients about being responsible to showing up at appointments. Wasn't willing to take the charge off even though I repeatedly told her that nobody informed me of that policy. It does not matter if you are a frontline health worker, whats more important is that you show up to your hair appointment or get chastised by Sanela Salon. read more

I love my new hair! Krissy gave me super blond baylayage beach waves, cut in a trendy angled bob. She is insanely good at her craft! Sanela and her staff run a high-end boutique salon with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. They'll take your coat and offer you tea and water when you arrive. It's apparent from the start that they take their art seriously. They use goldwell color and offer the newest style/color techniques. I've seen Helen twice now and oh my god my hair looks amazing. My hair is dyed purple and I'm very picky about how it looks and Helen knows exactly what to do, and has great suggestions to make my hair look even better. She's very careful, precise, and creative, and is funny as well. The salon itself is very clean, the staff are lovely, and they observe COVID safety protocols. I read the reviews on Yelp and did the research, but I have to say, I was totally wrong. I called to make an appointment and the receptionist could not figure out what I wanted, or how much they would charge me. She then accidentally hung up on me, and the entire process to book an appointment was around a half hour. Frustrating, to say the least. Finally, I called her back, and I specifically told her I was looking for a color, and to spend around $50-$60 dollars for my service. She said no problem, and set me up with a stylist. I went in and was immediately impressed with the interior. Everyone was very friendly and the salon was beautiful. I was taken to the sink and had my hair washed, and then met with my stylist. She was very friendly and listened attentively to my needs. I have no complaints about my time with her. She told me that my hair would need a gloss to look extra shiny, and I told her that's fine, with no other thoughts about cost. She mentioned nothing. She then towel dried my hair and asked me if that was all for today, or if I would like to book another appointment. I was very confused--was she going to dry my hair and style it? She didn't, immediately took her next client, and I walked to the receptionist, slightly embarrassed that I was leaving the salon looking like I just left a rainstorm. The receptionist then informed me that, for the $65 color and the $30 gloss, my total for the day was $95. Not including tip. (Keep in mind, I didn't have my hair cut at all.) I left to walk home with a wet head and a very light wallet. Unfortunately, they didn't understand what I wanted from the minute I called to book my appointment. I've learned my lesson to announce to the stylist my price range and what I want, and hopefully Sanela will find a better, more coherent receptionist. First impressions are everything. read more

Sanela Salon in Brookline MA, is a clean, quaint and classy salon that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a fabulous cut, color or style. I recently discovered this salon as soon as my former hair-dresser from Martha's Vineyard became employed here last fall. Jamie Cholaki cut my hair one summer on Martha's Vineyard. I have since followed her from this very first time she cut my hair as she is diligent, actually listens to what length you say would like your hair, and is passionate about her work and client's! Above all else-she gives the best cut, color and blow dry styles I have ever encountered. As I now live in the greater Boston area, I was ecstatic to find that she had settled in a neighboring salon (here at Sanela's). I cannot comment to the other stylists here, but Jamie has said only good things about them, and she is pretty meticulous with high standards for this sort of thing.
