Mop is in a new location!!! Make sure you're looking at the newest reviews as there have been several big changes since Nicole and the Mop team moved from Tremont in the South End to Dedham. The drive is not the best from Boston, but the parking is so convenient and you're still seeing Nicole, the best in the business. If you're coming from the city, avoid rush hour and take advantage of the Saturday hours. The website has a convenient online scheduling system and you can email the salon to get on the waitlist. My other reviews about Nicole's talent and awesome personality hold up- she's so good at curly haircuts. Price is well worth the service! The new location is in a kind of a market of stylists and the niche room for Mop recreates the South End vibe quite well. Nicole has her drinks fridge, magazines and photo books, super fancy dryer, and excellent products, so nothing has changed. There is a kind of overall waiting area at the salon building with 2 chairs, but Nicole is punctual, so you won't be waiting there long. There are also general use bathrooms for the salon building that are nothing to write home about and not something Nicole can really influence anyway. I'm sensitive to smell/aerosol products and because it is a building of salon rooms, it is INTENSE in the hall/general waiting area. I wore a mask, which helped a lot, so if you have asthma or bad allergies I recommend bringing one along just in case. Of course, Nicole has some on hand because she remains awesome about COVID precautions and generally creating a safe and welcoming space. I got a Deva cut from Kelly and honestly cannot say enough good things. I usually leave haircuts with a big frizz ball because no one blows out my hair correctly but Kelly nailed it. I specified I didn't want tight ringlets and she nailed that too. I left with silky soft, shiny, stretched out curls. So beyond thrilled to have discovered Mop in the South End! Cory Gardner is a genius with hair. He is the only hair colorist I've ever met who has not wanted to use bleach and toner to put highlights in my Asian hair. In fact, he told me that my hair was actually brown (a 5 out of 10 on the spectrum of natural hair colors) and could be colored using dye alone. Blew. My. Mind. I love the results. Cory is brilliant. Just got the best haircut of my life from Nicole. Thanks to COVID, I haven't been in a salon in 15 months and I have a special event coming up so I was desperate. Nicole was kind enough to call me back immediately after I left a message and found a way to squeeze me in. I can't tell you how much I appreciated that kind of care, especially since I was a new client. I've got very curly hair that has never gotten any kind of special treatment -- I've never really had a hairdresser who knew what to do with it. Nicole took a very unusual approach and the final result is beautiful. It really allows my curls to be "themselves" while framing my face. I returned to Mop in June once they reopened after closing for COVID-19 and wanted to post an update in case anyone is concerned about visiting Mop right now. Rest assured the team is taking every precaution to maintain social distancing and keep their clients safe. They have rearranged the salon to separate the stations and create distance at the front of the salon. They take your temperature when you enter and everyone has masks and face shields. I was in the chair for ~3 hours and was not concerned at all. I felt very comfortable here with the safety measures that Mop is taking and would highly recommend visiting for a post-quarantine chop! read more

My hair is tricky. It's messy, damaged, and there's a lot of it--much like the Rust Belt electorate the voted for Donald Trump. Cutting and blow-drying my hair is an onerous task, and I have endured dozens of catastrophic massacres of my 'do that have resulted in months of hat-wearing and teeth-gnashing. Therefore, I tend to view moving to a new city and finding a new hair salon/stylist with intense trepidation. Today, after five months in Boston, I finally bit the bullet and allowed Kelly at Mop Salon to address my tragic split ends and chronically heat-styled mane. She is beyond lovely. She immediately seemed to understand my hair and is clearly knowledgeable, competent, and experienced. The blowout was unparalleled, and she dry-cut my awfully complex hair without taking off too much length (of which I was terrified). Notoriously particular and difficult to please, I was completely satisfied with my cut and had none of the usual post-salon remorse. Kelly also didn't try to push products on me, which is one of my pet peeves when engaging in an already nerve-wracking first haircut encounter. Now that the first, anxiety-inducing hurdle has been cleared, I will certainly return for future hair-related endeavors. Found this pretty salon on Yelp (thanks, as usual) and went over to get a blowout while in Boston. You step down into a bright and airy, modern open space that's very welcoming. Greeted by a friendly woman as I walked in. I was a little early so I waited on their comfortable couch in the seating area and had a complimentary Diet Coke. Nice touch! I was there to see Corey. You absolutely notice him as soon as you walk in. Tall, well dressed and very expressive! I knew he'd be a lot of fun just listening to him talk. And he was! He sat me down and asked about my hair then we proceeded to wash it. I'm not sure what products they use for hair, but they are phenomenal. My hair is so shiny and silky and beautiful today! I suppose the four stars is because I really, really like my hair a certain way. And, Corey, when I told him what I wanted was totally willing to do it. I just couldn't seem to convey what I needed I guess because I'm not that happy with the style. I don't think it was him, I think I am just so used to my stylist at home doing it that I've forgotten how to verbalize what I need! I really like being asked how I want it done, where my part is, etc., and while Corey didn't do that, when I mentioned it he was very accommodating. I really have a hard time saying anything bad at all about the salon because it was just such a great experience with such great people, but I really probably should have said more. I decided to go to Mop because of the great Yelp reviews. My husband helped me cut a 13 inch long ponytail last week that I donated and I wanted to give a bit of shape to my newly short hair. I had an appointment with Cory and I must say he was just the best! I had never especially liked any stylist/hairdresser before, but I think I might finally "settle down" now tat I met him! He started by taking a long time to ask me what I wanted exactly and then proceeded to execute it in the most perfect way! I love this place! For my first visit, I booked a deva cut with Cory. Not only did I get a fabulous cut, I had so much fun talking with Cory, who is as friendly and enthusiastic as he is skilled. He really listened to what I wanted, and I couldn't be happier with my haircut. Deva cuts are generally pricier than regular haircuts, but very much worth it. When I left the salon, my curls were doing tricks I've never seen them do before in my life. Been coming here for a few years now and I couldn't rave about this place anymore than I already do! Always go in for a devacut and it's the most amazing experience ever! First few times was with Cory .. but then once I started lightening my hair once it was healthy enough (after a horrible experience at another place) I started going to Nicole and she is a goddess! I have been getting my hair cut by Derek F. since 2006, when I randomly walked into the salon he was working at and sat down in his empty chair. I have straight, short, spiky hair, and Derek treats every haircut like it is a work of art. He has never used clippers on me, which I imagine many stylists would consider. He also led me through a two-year growing out process, which was remarkably less awkward than expected, due to his skills. One of the main reasons why I love Derek is that he did not even bat an eyelash when I walked in the day after getting my then-grown-out hair styled and asked him to chop it all off again! I am 100% committed to his wonderful work, and today, took my 2.5 year-old to get her first haircut at Mop. I could not have been more pleased, both with my own cut and hers. To be fair, she did not really need a haircut, just a clean-up and serious conditioning job. I was very impressed with the way that Derek put her at ease and made the potentially scary process very comfortable. I would recommend Derek to absolutely anyone. It's long overdue for me to get highlights so I went on to get the phone number and realized I haven't written a review!!! I have been getting my hair highlighted for 16 years. Yep, got my first highlights at 12. According to my mother I complained that I "needed my summer hair back" and was persistent and annoying so the twice yearly highlights began. I moved to Boston in 2007 and heard from a well highlighted friend about Cory. I went to check him out and let's put it this way: he's the best I've ever had. So even though I'm in New York, I'll plan trips back around my root regrowth. No, seriously. And to be clear, I'm the girl who will not leave a salon until it's exactly the shade I requested. I've had issues with past stylists in Cleveland and in Upstate NY when I was in college but Cory did it right the first time and has continued ever since. He gets the exact shade of blonde I want and he cuts it perfectly and he's ridiculously pleasant.
