I saw Caitlin for a haircut yesterday! I went in with pictures, ideas, and thoughts on what I wanted to get for a cut. She took all that information and gave me a great cut. I went from pretty long hair to VERY short hair in a matter of minutes. It is hard to walk in a trust a total stranger to make that happen for you. My first cut at Philosophe was yesterday with a junior stylist, Brooke Robichaud. She was terrific. I am so pleased with my cut. Brooke took the time to talk with me about my hair before shampooing - this is always appreciated! We talked about how I like to style my hair and the products that I like to use. We agreed on a style and cut before going to shampoo. As a first time customer, I was treated to a detox shampoo, which was really great as I use a lot of products in styling, and it was great to get off build up of products. The results are terrific. I am very pleased with my cut and styling, and I'm kicking myself for going into Boston for cuts when Philosophe is practically in my back yard. Last note... the salon is beautiful! From the street, it looks like a ho-hum street front salon. It's not. It is gorgeous inside, and I felt very pampered in the process, which, for me, is part of the experience. Well done, ladies! Picking a new salon or stylist is scary but after leaving my first appointment I am SO glad I came here! Christina is a special human being who is definitely a master of her art. I just moved to West Roxbury and was in need of a new salon. I turned to Yelp and was so happy to have found Philosophe! This is an adorable salon with high quality and professional staff. I was greeted at the door with a big smile, was served a delicious chai latte, and my stylist, Laurina, was excellent. Was excited to try this cute salon for my first post-COVID cut. Stylist didn't listen and lobbed off 5 inches of my hair when I asked for a "trim because I'm getting married." She also didn't add layers or angles, which we talked about at length during my appointment. 2 stars because she fixed it for free after I complained, which meant cutting even more hair. She blamed me, of course. Her explanation was she "thought I was ready".....for what I'm not sure. Owner is apparently an anti-masker based on some Instagram stories I've seen recently. First, just feeling comfortable is so important to me. I like to feel "at home" in the place I'm going to be visiting a lot for a simple trim touch up to full on color, eyebrow threading and sometimes makeup. Christina, the owner is rocking it. EXTREMELY over priced!! I paid $90 for a haircut with tip and nobody believed me, it's NOT worth it. The salon is cute and a small business who is making their money back on all the fancy decor they have in the shop. I did not see a "master stylist". I made a last minute appointment as they were closing and the level of stylist was never discussed, only that one person was "available". It was very apparent the stylist was pretty young from her style and personality. A "master" stylist would have been more experienced in listening, they chopped off hair I asked them to specifically leave alone. Do not waste your time, poor customer service was right. read more

I am 9 months pregnant and was told by my doc that I needed to go in for an unplanned and immediate ultrasound which conflicted with my hair appointment. When I called the salon I explained the situation and asked if I could reschedule or move my appointment - the owner told me she HAD to charge me 100% of $200+ service I would have had that day. She immediately tried to justify this by saying "its just business" and "everyone has things going on". When I pushed back a bit she said "well I mean I guess I can do 50% of the service - but we are really doing you a favor here." I fully expected a fee for canceling today's appointment and would have been ok with paying a % and my intent was to rebook ASAP, as I have been a customer of theirs for almost a year. But to be made to feel bad for THEM because they were being "put out" by only charging me 50% of the service - when I am having an unexpected pregnancy related appointment - is in my opinion not a great way to do business and needless to say I will not be a client of theirs in the future. read more

I saw Bex for a balayage and cut a few months ago on my short curly hair. Ultimately the styled end result was beautiful, the color was great but the cut not totally what I asked for. Overall salon service and staff and atmosphere was very relaxed, chic but not stuffy, and friendly. I always wear my wavy/curly hair natural (no heat, very little product) and was/am trying to keep it healthy. I immediately told her this and before I could even finish my sentence she took a flat iron to it. She did offer to stop, but suggested it would be better to have it straight for color application. I get that, but I have gone to other salons that keep it curly for coloring so they know how it'll look when it's in its natural curly state! The color ended up being gorgeous and she was very informative on how coloring and Toning works, showed me examples of her past work, and explained the products. The cut was also gorgeous... for someone who wears their hair straight. She blow dried it straight before cutting, thinned it a lot (which did bad things for my curls) and it looked great styled but I had to keep requesting layers. Once I washed and styled it myself, it didn't quite work. Overall I appreciate her talent and time taken to teach and consult me about color, just wish she did the same for the cut and using heat tools. I'd definitely recommend this salon (and Bex) to others, but I think I'm going to try and find a curly hair specialist for my next cut :) read more

This was a complete waste of time. Had a 1p appt for an eyebrow threading. Waited 30 minutes to watch the technician up sell her prior client on products, clean out her dirty brushes and towels, and disappear. Bought the products I put aside and left. The salesgirl apologized, but the complete disdain from the "eyebrow artist' was simply too much. And, when you call me to apologize but mention several times that it's the holiday season....well, that's not working for me. I left work to come there, and you couldn't be bothered. I just moved to the area and was looking for a new hair dresser and quite frankly needed an emotional pick me up. Based on the good reviews and on a whim I decided to schedule a haircut and to boot, the place is hop, skip and a jump from my house. The ladies here are quite special, they are welcoming and non-pretentious. I immediately felt comfortable after shortly arriving. And my haircut came out fabulous and I was so happy that I came back later to get my hair colored. After many years of wonderful haircuts at Philosophe, it's a shame my last experience has put such a damper on my mindset about their customer service that I won't be able to return. If you've visited, you already know about Philosophe's strict cancellation policy, requiring you to have a credit card on file and cancel days in advance or lose 100% or 50% of the service price. Fine, great, not a problem... if that's what it takes to get great service. What you may not know is that, as a customer, you could show up on a Friday evening, of a holiday weekend, the night before a special event for an appointment that you've had booked for over 2 months and be told that your stylist isn't in because she was "let go" the day before. Sure, do things like this happen? Yes, they certainly do! But, typically, will the salon or receptionist do everything they can to reach the customer and make her aware of a service they suddenly can't provide? Instead, the receptionist was unapologetic and simply said, "Didn't you get my message?" as she fumbled away on her keypad. Knowing Philosophe communicates via text and email, I frantically scrolled through all of my recent messages. Nothing. Instead, as I stood there, I found a lone voicemail from a few hours earlier from a Quincy number saying the appointment was canceled. I guess I just assumed with such an unexpected cancellation, Philosophe would have done all they could to ensure the customer was aware that she wouldn't be getting her hair cut and styled that night. read more

Danica did a great job helping me with my disaster hair. I had awful roots and she knew exactly what to do. We added a shadow root to help blend my hair naturally. When I first walked in and sat down a nice gentleman (with awesome hair) brought me a glass of water and said welcome, with my name. He already knew who I was! The owner was so sweet, and introduced herself to me, so did the other stylist nearby. I came to Philosophe having had two consecutive bad experiences at different hair salons--one bad color job, and one bad cut--so I was not feeling good about how my hair was looking. I was looking for a salon in the area that paid attention to detail and listened to their customers, and that is exactly what I got at Philosophe. The salon is meticulously decorated, but in a way that makes you feel comfortable (complete with an adorable pup!). The staff are all incredibly friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. Emily has helped me transition from red and black to a light brown and blonde over the past 8 months without damaging my hair. I seriously LOVE it here and I fell in love with my new forever colorist/stylist/soul sister Neli!! Neli brought my hair back to life and did a major color transformation on my hair. Her technique is amazing and she nailed my babylights and balayage. She took time and listened to what I wanted and even went home and thought about how she could achieve my hair goal! Sarah is just amazing!!! I usually only get my hair cut once per year, back in California. However, I found this place on a run one night, and decided that it was just too chic/adorable to not stop in. Fast forward one week and one AWESOME hair cut later, and I am now totally hooked. You know how when you walk into some salons, you are made to feel like you are either part of the club or an outsider? And you know how some stylists make you feel like you should be grateful to be allowed to even walk in their front doors? NOT HERE!!! I personally have had a major fear of getting my hair cut or dyed at salons for years due to many past salons cutting about 4 inches off when i ask for only 1,and since I have dark long and thick hair I feared to price was going to be beyond unaffordable if i wanted to highlight my hair tot he point where it would look completely blonde, I was so sure that no matter where i went i would either need to spend $600. Christina made sure to give me a haircut with long layers so my hair still looked extremely thick and she managed to get rid of all the unhealthy ends without cutting a lot, I still came out of the salon and no one noticed my hair was any shorter. I have also been very scared of going blonde because i previously had dark hair and was scared of the damage it could have or having it turn out orange, Sarah gave me amazing ash blonde highlights that frame my face and blend in so perfectly with my natural hair color, it looks so beyond natural without any damage at all, and the best part of it all is they make sure to give you a very reasonable price. I have overall never been very happy with my experience at Philosophe. P.S. They also use an amazing product called olaplex which not many places have, it is used while dying hair, it does cost $20 extra but it is so beyond worth it to get, I went in twice in 3 weeks to bleach my hair and that should have caused a lot of damage to my hair, but because of olaplex i don't have a single split end and my hair still feels as healthy as it was before i dyed it, i very strongly recommend getting it :) read more

Best place I've been, hands down, ever. Emily did a pixie one me after YEARS of talking about it, and it is the best haircut I've ever had. It is THE haircut for my face. It was a huge change, and I couldn't be happier. She (and the whole salon) made me feel so comfortable and so supported. I know it's just hair, but come on, going from a lifetime of shoulder length or longer to a legit pixie was kind of a big deal! Phase 2 was color, and I went from a mousey brown to platinum. I must admit, the first session left me pretty yellow, but Emily (and the other stylists) had me back in within the week to get the yellow out and transform my hair into legit the perfect ashy blonde I had hoped for. Emily's exact works were, 'You're not leaving here until it's perfect.' and she was serious. I LOVE the final result. Not to brag, but it looks so good, and am just so happy to finally have found a place that takes customer satisfaction so seriously. When you pay a decent (though reasonable) amount to get your hair done, there is some expectation that it comes out how you envision, and it is clear that all of the stylists at Philosophe are professionals who take pride in their craft and know how important it is for their clients to feel good when they leave. I highly recommend for cut, color, and just a general sense of genuine support. This place is a gem. I love it here and want to hang out all the time (even if I don't need my hair done....)
