I hired Sunset Masonry for a masonry project that involved coordination between three neighboring properties. While the masonry work was completed, communication and project management were significant issues. On multiple occasions, the project manager initiated phone calls by immediately yelling. These calls included repeated references to cost concerns on other parts of the project which were unrelated to my scope of work. My portion of the project was limited to cutting an opening in an existing block wall and adding two columns for a gate I had already purchased. When the gate installer (one they frequently recommend) came to install the gate, he notified me that the hole was too large for my gate and there would be a noticeable gap. When I contacted the project manager to flag the issue, the response was another phone call in which I was yelled at. While the final result is functional and the gap issue was eventually resolved by adding a piece of metal, due to the communication style, lack of professional conduct, and quality control issues, I would not recommend this company, especially for larger projects or projects requiring coordination. read more

I had a deteriorating wall around my backyard. It looked terrible. I had Sunset Fence come out and quote me for repair and just making it look better. They were out at my house within a day and gave me a quote to repair some cracks and sections and stucco the rest to make it look uniform and just more pleasant to look at. A few days later they were already at the house starting the repair and then the next day stuccoing the wall. I am very happy with how it turned out. My only gripe was that there was some trash(water bottles, gloves, debris) left at the house, but it took me just 10 minute to clean it up. While Sunset Fence staff are extremely polite and professional, they have a $2800 minimum charge for any job, even if the cost of the job is less than that. I had to have a 6 ft block wall repaired after the corner pillar (the supporting column) was damaged. Their pricing is extremely higher (double) than any other quote I received from competing companies; so I did not choose Sunset Fence to complete the job. I contacted sunset fence for a second estimate on a twenty four ft. by twelve foot block wall. The 1st came in quite high and sunset fence beat the estimate by $5000. On day one they came in and dug a footing and poured the concrete by noon. The next day they put up all the blocks by noon. We had Bob, from Sunset Fence, come out to evaluate the damage to our block fence. Our fence is cracked horizontally, vertically and stair-step. In addition, it is bowed, inward--but, is not in danger of falling. Bob wrote a professional assessment that we have no water damage or trees that would create this damage. He concluded the rebar had suffered corrosion, footings had failed and tree roots (we have no trees) contributed to the damage. His assessment, in conjunction with a arborist experts report, will prove beneficial to us, in the future. We back to a common area retention basin with huge mesquites and have neighbors with citrus planted close to our wall. We water our grass, on a regular basis, and mesquite and citrus are known to seek water. The common area water is turned off, as was our neighbor's irrigation. We'll see what happens, though we plan on spending about $1000 to repair our fence, ourselves. read more

Not the cheapest, just the best. Highly professional from start to finish. We had an unusual situation - a 50-year-old redwood fence overgrown with literally tons of cat's claw vines. The overgrowth was about 12 feet high and 8 feet thick along the 90 food length of our back yard. This isn't the kind of demo Sunset usually has to do, but they quickly arranged for another contractor with a backhoe and large truck to haul the cat's claw away in just two hours! Sunset Fence I hired to raise our fence 2 blocks higher. The super Bob has a bad temper and always has to be right and likes to talk down to you if you don't agree with him. I experienced this after his guys damaged my landscape lines under the block fence even knowing they were there. He said they were not responsible for any damage. I said yes unless it was done on purpose. They dug the ground out and you could see the landscape lines so why would they continue or not be extra careful to not splice it? He didn't want to take responsibility. I took pictures and they spliced them anyway. After going back n forth several times he did finally come out to fix it after I had my landscaper look at it to make sure he was going to fix it correctly. It seems this company only cares about a buck and not customer service. The block they brought was an old grey block and didn't match and I didn't know until the day of. They never told me in advance it would not match so that was a disappointment. After the job was completed the stucco work they did does not remotely match the fence stucco. They stuccoed the top 3 feet with a different texture than the bottom 5 feet. I asked him to come out and look at it and he is refusing to accept responsibility. He expects to be paid 100 percent and I withheld 500.00 so they can correct it and come out and look at it. After the job was completed they never came out to verify it was done correctly. When the workers were done they left and no super ever came back to verify the work was quality work. I understand it won't match perfectly not a problem but they didn't even use the same texture as the existing fence. We had an appointment today to review the work 2 weeks after they finished. He won't even come back and he cancelled our appointment at 2:15 when I waited since 1PM. If you want to work with an unprofessional super who doesn't take responsibility then this would be the perfect company. read more

We had a meeting scheduled for a couple days out and then the night before he sends me a text basically complaining that I'm too far out and letting me know that he got a better project to work on. Never mind the fact that I might be willing to wait longer or pay more. It's just poor business practice and communication to go that route and not speak with me directly on the phone. I have a big project, so based on the way it was handled I'm feeling lucky that I can move on now that I know now how Bob would handle project adversity...Splitsville baby! Overall he seems like a decent guy on the phone, guess I will never know if his company does good work. My neighbor and I split the cost of replacing the wooden fence between our yards with block. This was a large job, as in total I believe 4 separate homes were involved. Jim was our project manager (for lack of proper title) and did a great job communicating and keeping me informed throughout the project. They showed up on time and go to work right away. These guys know how to get things done! Demo, haul away, and almost my entire wall was up in just 2 days! The crew were friendly and focused and did a solid job. Further, Ruben identified an issue with the leveling performed the prior day, which meant he & his team had to do about 4 hours of re-leveling and cutting blocks in order to rectify it. The integrity he displayed is sadly lacking in far too many people, but not this man. He easily could have pretended not to notice. I may have never known, but he did the right thing when nobody was looking, and should be highly commended for that. I only even know about this, because I saw them doing the work over and asked him about it. One of my sprinkler lines was busted during their prep work, which was my fault b/c I had no idea it had been run diagonally, and by the next day when I showed my yard guru what needed to be fixed, I discovered it had already been repaired. I asked Jim about it and indeed, it was him. Outside the scope of his job, but another example of going the extra mile. While they've still a bit left to do, I'm beyond pleased thus far and would recommend this family owned and run business to anyone who asked me for a referral. They demo'ed out the common wall 100' chain link fence, trenched, poured a concrete foundation, set rebar and added a 100' long, 6' high block wall (to perfectly match my other block wall).
