For those who have been in AZ for a while may recognize this restaurant as the old Marie Calendars. It's been busy both times I've been in, and service was pretty consistently good. We've tried a few things there, waffles, bacon, biscuits and gravy, potatoes, and eggs. I wasn't crazy about the biscuits and gravy, it was too sausage tasting. I liked Sunny's. It had been a very long time since my last visit. I did notice they are keeping shorter hours now. The place hasn't changed much in all the years except maybe it is much friendlier then ever. I might say that its the friendliest restaurant in town. This place obviously doesn't care about business. We waited for 10 minutes while the staff passed us by without even acknowledging we were there. Took another 10 minutes for anyone to realise we were seated and offered to get us drinks. And another 10 minutes to actually get the coffee. 30 minutes and still haven't ordered food...do not come here if you're on a time schedule! Food was okay, at best. We can cook a better breakfast at home and for 1/3 of the cost. Staff is swamped. Owner obviously doesn't care about employees or customers. Will give my money to someone else next time. read more

I've never been here before, and I even told the person who took my order that this is the first time I've ever been there. However, my experience with the food here was on the very disappointing side. I got my food to go because I have to get to class. Im sure you can imagine the big disappointment to get to school, open my food box to eat quickly before class only to find that my food is burned. Home style potatoes... can't taste the potatoes. I don't think I've ever had potatoes in anything and not tasted the potatoes, but this is because all I can taste is charred starch. The omelette looked like it was going to be good, really good. Four stars?? Four stars my you know what. I will never go here again and I gave this place 4-5 opportunities in the past two years or so. Here is why. Not only is the service always ridiculously slow, (take today for example. Only two people at the bar, I'm one of them. Takes five minutes to ask me if I want a drink and another five to bring me my water) But the food is also very underwhelming and lacking any type of flavor whatsoever. My omelette gets to me and I can immediately tell it's been left on the pan too long. The edges are brown which they tried to hide with cheese. I bite into it/ and this omelette had four items. 3 meats and one veggie. Zero taste whatsoever. So bad I thought I had Covid. I couldn't taste a thing. It was rubbery and lacking any flavor at all. So I move to the big side of home fries. Same thing even with ketchup! Zero flavor and like eating cardboard. Just a big pile of bland. I politely got up, and talked to the hostess . I was calm and polite about me leaving my food and why. I didn't go into too much detail I just told her it was absolutely tasteless and had no seasoning at all. I did not inform her this was my 4-5 time with the same issue so she may have wondered why I didn't give the chance to make it right. I left quietly and without incident. Staff was fine. Aside from the ten minute wait for water I love never had a problem with them . But the quality of food that has come from that kitchen on multiple visits with multiple different items ordered (omelettes, biscuits, Mexican) is sub par and I will not be going back. Is there any quality control in there at all? I hear this place used to be an amazing little spot. I'm convinced they are surviving off of the name they built in this area and peoples inability to point out sub par food. My pancakes were so thick I almost choked on a small piece I had to cut with a steak knife. For the price I paid, my reviews should send folks running to patronize them. Two stars, because Sunny's is an awesome greasy spoon here in Tempe. The food has always been really good and the waiters and waitresses are sweet, hardworking people. I've been coming in to Sunny's since I was in college at ASU. But recently I've backed off a bit. Simply because the quality and cleanliness has been lacking. I've had one other gross mishap with my order, but I simply let the manager know and she kindly made it right. Didn't post a scathing review, didn't discourage people from going there, even overlooked their exorbitant price increases. I get it. They're trying to run a business. I found two pieces of thick black plastic in my $20 meal ordered on Saturday. They were in the last few bites. I was lucky enough to not break a tooth or swallow plastic. You would be hard-pressed to find any longtime patron (or anyone for that matter) not disgusted by that. The real insult came this morning in the form of today's manager on duty 5/14/23 (Mother's Day 2023). My husband brought the mishap to her attention--including the debris found in my meal--and, in not so many words, she insinuated that he was lying or somehow mistaken. What sense would that make?! How could one possibly mistake finding debris in a meal that's been ordered hundreds of times before?! We're two college educated professionals who used to love Sunny's. She made it seem like we were trying to "get over" on her. We have been gladly paying for properly prepared food from Sunny's before she even worked there. We truly would have liked to remain loyal customers, but today's manager ruined that with her asinine rudeness and lack of customer care, which was a major faux pas on her part as we are in no way " the customer is always right..." kind of people. Although there a few familiar good places for breakfast in the area, I saw the menu to this diner and it peaked my interest. A corner restaurant in a less desirable location than say the local mall or upscale options, but the place was busy and it was a good choice. We ordered the meat lovers and upgrade for the pancakes for a dollar. I'm on Keto but my husband isn't, so this was ample food with a nice combo of proteins for me. He said the potatoes were good and the pancakes were just ok. I like the ham, bacon and sausage... coffee was good too. Service was good except that my husband had to get up to get that extra plate we asked for. Not uncommon that servers everywhere forget to bring an extra plate when they first come, but to not immediately fix that means we both wait to eat as the food gets cold. We stopped in on Saturday morning, there were people waiting outside. Since we were visiting from out of state, we figured this was a good sign that we picked the right place for breakfast. We had a wait of only 10min. The menu was huge, so much to choose from. Our server, Rashida, was really sweet and told us about her favorites on the menu since the decision was hard. I went with the El Patron skillet (which had potatoes at the base, house made chorizo, pepperjack cheese, pickles jalapenos, grilled gr peppers & onions, topped with 2 eggs, pico de gallo, side of sour cream and came with toast). My friend got the Chicano Benedict (eggs benedict made with Chorizo and jalapenos and tomatoes, came with a side of homefries. Both meals were good, the chorizo has a real kick to it. So beware of you're not a fan of spicy foods. The food came out very fast considering they were very busy. The service was great, they have plenty of staff and do a lot of carryouts and Grubhub orders. I see they kept a lot of tables empty, I assume it was to provide some social distancing, all of the staff was wearing masks, too. We were craving breakfast over the weekend, and faced with the decision of going to Denny's (Closer by), or Sunny's Diner, we wanted to support locally owned businesses. Plus, the food's way better! Since my last review the menu's changed a little, but the quality and quantity of food you get is still consistently good. I ordered the special for the day- the meatloaf breakfast. At around $10, it was an large helping of sliced meatloaf covered in gravy, 3 eggs, with your choice of toast/biscuit and hash browns. The meatloaf was dense and packed with flavor. The hash browns, as always, were excellent, cooked on the griddle perfectly. I opted for a biscuit, which was a large fist-sized portion, light and fluffy tasting. It was so much food I could only finish about half. Service was friendly and drinks were refilled as needed. Overall, still a great place to dine! read more
