As a fan of Detroit-style pizza, Sunny Hill has been on my list for a while. Then I stumbled across an article stating that Sunny Hill has one of top burgers in Seattle, so I had to go check it out. This place was fairly busy upon arrival. Someone came up to us immediately and politely asked us to wait a few minutes for them to set up the table for us. As we were waiting, someone else showed up to take our drink orders. As soon as she took our order, our table was ready. Very systematic and phenomenal service! This is within the first 5 min of being there! The building seemed a bit old and there was a rustic vibe to it. It's not very big and a bit intimate. I wouldn't say it's really designed for groups bigger than 4. Our food came out at a reasonable time after ordering. We had ordered the Arcade square pie with mushrooms, the Lord General square pie, and a Sunny Smash Burger with cheese. Hot honey on the side. Arcade - wanted to keep it somewhat simple with this one so I can get a general understanding of their pizzas. It was loaded with toppings. A bit too much, but I believe it's because of the added mushrooms. The dough was slightly too chewy. I tried it with and without hot honey. I preferred it without. The pizza had too much going on. The flavors were there, but it was a bit heavy. Lord General - this pizza was much better. The flavors were more balanced. It was lighter on the toppings, making it easier to eat with the dough. The sausage and soppressata were a very good combo. They compliment each other very well. Sunny Smash Burger - this burger was very solid. Although it's a smash burger, it's pretty big. The toppings were simple and delicious. The onions was definitely the star of the show. It was heavy on the pickles. A bit too much for my liking, but would be great for pickle lovers. This is great alternative for people who don't want a pizza. Overall it was a great first experience. My only regret is not getting a round pizza to taste the crust. The groups around us all had round pizza and it looked amazing. I'll have to try it next time. read more

Sunny Hill Pizza is hitting on almost all cylinders, and when it's good, it is good. The pizza? Delicious. The waffle fries? Absolutely excellent ... don't sleep on them. The salads are solid too, though I'm still mourning the loss of the green salad. Bring it back, please! Now, the staff for the most part, they are the heart and soul of this place. Warm, welcoming, and genuinely a reason I keep walking through that door. So it genuinely pains me to say that there is one staff member who gives off a deeply uncomfortable energy. We're talking lingering stares, a passive-aggressive undertone that's hard to ignore, and an overall ick factor that follows you through your entire meal. It's an unsettling contrast to the warmth of everyone else on the team and honestly, that contrast makes it stand out even more. Look, the location is convenient, the food slaps, and 95% of the staff deserves a raise and so yes, I'll keep coming back. And, keep putting up with the passive-aggressive woman. But Sunny Hill, if you're reading this, a little check-in with your full team could go a long way toward making this place absolutely flawless. read more

I came back this weekend and had a much better experience! We got our Detroit style pizza, the broccoli was delicious, and service was great! We ordered the pepperoni pizza with serrano peppers and the mushroom pizza. The pepperoni pizza was so good, I couldn't wait to finish the leftovers the next day. Thr mushroom pizza was hearty and flavorful too - very well done for a mushroom pie! The broccoli was cooked perfectly and the tahini (and maybe a citrus flavor?) were perfecto complements. We also ordered the tiramisu cookie for dessert. I will dream about this cookie! It was all the best parts of a cookie and tiramisu in one! The restaurant was clean and inviting with plenty of natural light. They serve both round and Detroit-style square pies. I ordered the Loyal square pie (4 slices) with castelvetrano olives and mushroom. I liked the sauce and the crust, but I personally would've preferred a bit more sauce and olives on my pie. My review is for takeaway. I finished a walk around Green Lake and thought I definitely earned a pizza! I heard Sunny Hill had one of the best Detroit style pizza and round pizzas in Ballard. I placed an online order for their Lord General round pie. By the time I arrived at Sunny Hill pizza, my pie was ready! It was a Thursday night around 7:30pm and there were a few people in the restaurant. The server greeted me warmly and handed me my pie. It smelled really good! By the time I got home, the pizza was still warm. The sausage olive thin crust pizza was delicious. They added just the right amount of toppings so you can taste each flavor. The crust had nice coloring and it was crisp. Everyone has different preferences for their crusts and I like mine crisp vs chewy. I would go back and dine in to try their other pies. read more

Not having iced tea is or coffee at a restaurant open for lunch on the weekend is weird. Snap Pea and Arugula salad was ok. dressing was understated. I would not order again. Airwaves square pizza tasted great! Different style than any other pizza I have ever had. Crust is essentially focaccia without the good part of focaccia (salty, oily, herb-y) toppings seemed pretty skimpy. The pie was unique and I enjoyed it. I felt that the portions were pretty small, a small pie does not feed 2 people. The food was good, but Sunny Hill is not a good value. What a strange experience. We had a group of five that was looking for food after a day at the beach. We asked to be seated outside to enjoy the awesome sunny day. They looked at us like we were crazy.... There were several open tables. We ordered a round of drinks and when we asked the waitress about the menu she knew nothing about what was on it. She had to leave and ask what a hazy ioa was. The staff, assuming it was the manager, kept staring us down like we were going to bail on the bill. I got the arcade pizza to go and ate it while walking around in the area. I should have taken a picture from the outset but I couldn't because I scarfed half of it down too quickly. It was incredibly good. My wife actually thought it was so so but I told her she needs to rewire her brain. I think it's because she's trying to lose weight so she doesn't like thick pizza. But for me this was heaven. The pepperoni was perfectly crusted. I believe that's the mallard effect or something other. I also liked how it had both sauce and tomatoes, so it tasted extra juicy. And what's good about this is that there's no crust with no toppings on it, this is good all the way around. I also saw the chef taking a baked chicken quarter out of the oven and throwing it over some greens. And a few other people sitting down got some meatballs that looked good. They started getting busy around 5pm. We got our food pretty quickly and service was great. We ordered the burger with fries and the loyal Detroit style pizza. Let's start with the burger. It was pretty average. I liked the caramelized onions which added a nice sweetness to it. The party itself was a bit too salty for me. The fries were sooo good. You could tell they were made fresh and didn't taste processed or weren't super oily at all. Perfectly salted too! The pizza was one of the best I've had in Seattle. Sunny Hill had been on my list for a while and I got to check it out when I was in the neighborhood recently. It's a really nice place and it was a nice chill night for outdoor seating. The heater next to us was not working but it wasn't too cold to be an issue. Our server was very informative and provided us recommendations on her favorites. We got a split square pie of the Arcade which has pepperoni, pickled serrano, mozz and parm, and the other half was Death by Misadventure which has garlic & fennel sausage, basil, guindilla peppers, taggiasca olive. Both of these very amazing and I love the thick crust on the square pie. Their round pies have more of a thinner NY style crust. I am definitely coming back to try the other ones! read more

This is my new favorite pizza sport. We got takeout and ordered the round Nature Buddy with sausage. It was delicious! I was really impressed with how big the pizza was. Nowadays I'm so used to not being able to split a pizza with someone else because the pizza is too small. But Sunny Hill's pies are definitely for sharing. One of my favorite restaurants in Bellevue and probably my favorite pizza spot in Seattle, if not one of my favorite pizza spots anywhere. This place is absolutely amazing and has both square Detroit style pizzas as well as round more "normal" pizzas. They have a few standard flavors that stay permanently, especially the ones with red sauce and then they rotate a few seasonal flavors out that I absolutely love. The space itself is extremely cute and I love having a date night and walking to Golden gardens before or after and the service is really attentive and friendly as well. I really enjoyed this spot and would definitely like to come back to try other items off the menu. The vibes are very laid back as it is a neighborhood spot and on the day I went with a friend of mine the weather was nice so we ate outside. It was also very nice that parking is easy to find here. The server was attentive and helpful as well. They have a solid selection of draft beers and a nice simple menu which primarily features pizza and some shared plates but they do also have a smash burger which I've heard is good as well. We were there for the Detroit style pizza and we tried the psycho stick and the arcade. I think both of us preferred the arcade one because crispy pepperoni cups on Detroit is an elite combo but both were very good and I would definitely order them again. I personally wish there had been some more pickled serranos on the arcade though. The side of black garlic ranch was also a tasty addition to add to the pizza as well. For dessert we split a lemon crinkle cookie and I would honestly skip that next time as it was a pretty average $7 cookie in my opinion. A friendly neighborhood gem in North Ballard with slightly steeper prices than what I'm personally used to. My friend and I tried their square pie, and split a regular 4 slice Death by Misadventure (sausage, olive, pepper for $31). The crust was thick and crispy, with bits of crispy caramelized cheese on the edges. Lovely neighborhood find. I love finding places that only local residents go to. This place is near Ballard tucked away. The food is so good. Great ingredients and flavorful. My thing is Detroit pizza and it's good here. Fluffy and crispy dough and simple sauce. We got tomatoes and cheese with basil. Service is really nice and attentive. We talked about trying the spicy honey but didn't but they gave us some. They also gave us a cookie when we were leaving. I'll be trekking back here for this place. Today, we were able to go to this cute spot. It was a rainy day in Seattle, but this place came through with a cute patio and heated lamps. We ordered the cheese square pie, delicious, highly recommend. And, we ended up getting the waffle fries with the ketchup and ranch, so good!!!! I've never actually eaten a deep pizza, so this is something I was looking forward to, and I really enjoyed. The patio wasn't cold. It was really perfect, good breeze, not cold. It was a perfect day to have pizza on a rainy day in Seattle. Golden Gardens is just a couple blocks away, which we were able to hang out afterwards. There isn't that much seating - they do a lot of takeout orders - so you can imagine how crowded a place like this gets on a Friday night. We came by around 5:40 to put our name on their list. We were told there'd be at least a 40 minute wait, which we had expected anyway. We walked around Golden Gardens to kill some time. Our table wasn't ready quite yet so they sat us over at the bar area in the back and had a some tasty drinks. Even though we waited, their service was so attentive, it hardly felt like a wait. When we got seated, we ordered the following: -Crispy cauliflower -Caesar salad -Waffle fries -Burger -Round pizza with cheese Long story short, everything was delicious. The surprising winners were all of the sides. The waffle fries were fried to perfection. The Caesar salad tasted different from the usual - maybe an extra bit of love? The cauliflower was completely vegan and had a nice kick. The burger was good as was the pizza. I think the square / Detroit style would've been a bit more interesting. But all and all, amazing and friendly service and great food is 5-stars in my book read more

Sunny Hill is the perfect way to end a day at Golden Gardens! It's just a drive up from the hill and it's not too hard to street park around the area. You'll most likely have to wait a bit to get seated if you come around dinner time, but there are plenty of chairs to relax in while waiting. Their square Detroit-style pizza is a must!! We ordered a draft beer each, the crunchy cauliflower, and Murray square pizza and our expectations were absolutely met. The pizza especially impressed me, the crust was so crispy from the cheese and I could really taste the quality of each topping, particularly the tomato sauce. Absolutely amazing in every way. Does that sound unreasonably positive? I assure you it's accurate. I'd been wanting to try this spot for a while and Seattle got one of those rare nice stretches of weather in the middle of a very dreary spring. So, so celebrate after work on Friday, we went, anticipating a wait. Their menu is one of those that, as a well practiced homecook, I wanted to enjoy to get some inspiration and aspirations from. It didn't disappoint. For an outside spot, it was a 45 min wait but it felt like that was a conservative estimate and in our probably 30 mins out front soaking up the sunset, we got to order drinks and an appetizer. Was it difficult to cut the charred broccoli on the arm of an Adirondack chair? Yes. But boy was it delicious. We had one of their mezcal cocktails and their daily orange wine pour (nice for $12) and the broccoli that had a really savory aromatic vibe with the tahini and what I think was togarashi seasoning. Delicious and well cooked. Soon after we were escorted to the back patio (by the very charismatic and jovial dude working front of house) with Drea as our server. What. A. Delight. Cannot say enough about Drea. She's rad, hell yeah. Really made the experience. We ordered our pizza, the standard with some chilis added and a side of hot honey, and some waffle fries. All was amazing and that homemade ranch had the best celery flavors. So good The pizza was surprisingly great. Not that I didn't expect good food here but ... y'know. Most pizza is ok. Few are exceptional and this one was it, y'all. Tons of gooey cheese, and all the food came from the kitchen in perfect timing. Clearly a well run restaurant. For dessert, they had salted caramel budino on the menu, which I'd heard of but never has, so we gave it a spin with an amari that I hadn't had before. It was bustling on a Saturday night but we could order a drink while we waited. It was only about a 25 min wait for 2 people at peak weekend time. I got the rootdown cocktails which was honestly one of the best drinks I've had this year. It had a tasty sweet rootbeer flavor with a angostura bitters whipped cream, yum! We ordered artichokes for an appetizer and they were tender and had a wonderful lemon flavor. For a pie we went for the pepperoni and pickled serrano square pie.
