$36.00 for a pizza is wild. I was served a lukewarm beer twice and ended up buying a beer specifically from the fridge just to get a cold one. This was my first time visiting and decided to go do trivia. Head in the Clouds trivia visits bars in town weekly and I ended up going last Thursday. Trivia was so much fun. Vera's seems to host many events. Karaoke, trivia, drag brunch, etc. it's a perfect space for it. The service at the bar was okay. The ambience is super cool and the space is very open. I won't be buying food or drinks here anymore but I will come back for the events. read more

Went in on a Saturday at about 7:30 to grab a slice and a beer before a show at the Sunset. Was surprised to find a very club vibe (loud music, flashing lights). The sign said order slices at bar. Cool. Fine. No biggie. The bar was full of patrons, no one sitting in the remaining restaurant. It was like a night club before anyone showed up But there was no place to actually squeeze yourself in to place your order. Bartender never said hello, made eye contract....we were invisible. And some regular was taking up the whole spot where I think you would order and totally oblivious. We sat down to look at menu and decided this was not it for us. It sure would be nice to be even slightly acknowledged....and I've seen many other bartenders handle the same set up so much better. I was getting the feeling they were too good for our money. And folks, it's Ballard, there are so many places to spend your money and I highly suggest it. Thats what we did (and from the looks of how dead it was so did others). RACISM WITH A CAPITAL R So, I've never written a review before, but my experience at Vera's was so jarring that I feel compelled to speak up. It was Super Bowl Sunday, late in the 4th quarter. My wife and I, (along with our three-month-old daughter), visited Vera's Pizza in Ballard to root for our home team, and join a group of Latino friends who'd arrived earlier. We hadn't been there more than 5 minutes when out of nowhere, a man (I presume the owner/GM), approached the table and said "no babies". Now, we had checked online before coming, to see if families were allowed, and had read reviews from parents who'd brought their children. Puzzled, when my wife asked for clarification, specifically why, he said "This is America, it's the law/this is how it's done here". Now, my wife is a US citizen, (but Colombian by birth), and it was obvious she was being racially profiled; and right in front of her husband. What made his xenophobia even clearer was that, before we arrived, our group texted us that the volume had been turned all the way down during the halftime show featuring Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny, so no one could hear it. The man had later said it was a "technical malfunction", even though the volume miraculously came back on right when the show ended. With this thought in the back of my mind, it suddenly dawned on me that I was watching overt, undisguised racism in real time, and it shocked me. As a white American male, born and raised in the NW, I'd never seen anything like it, nor been on the receiving end of it. Biting my tongue, I asked him if my daughter and I, (I was holding her), could go over to the food section of the pizzeria. That way she wouldn't be where the alcohol was being served. Again, he told us we had to leave. So, there we were, a racially mixed American family, being kicked out of an eating establishment with just a few minutes to go before one of the biggest nights in Seattle sports history. After giving him a piece of our minds, we left. Afterwards, we did some research and per online reviews, what we experienced was not an isolated incident. Reports of bigotry at Vera's Pizza are not uncommon. So, if you care about doing the right thing; about not visiting a place that is racist, discriminatory, and dehumanizing; do yourself a favor, don't eat here. Don't patronize this business. This man is a dinosaur, a product of a bygone age, and his establishment should not receive any foot-traffic whatsoever if you care about equality, or the ideals of our country. read more

Probably the rudest service we've ever had. I don't know if he's the owner or what but I don't know how he possibly still has a job there. He did not even say hello to us. He just said what he want and we ordered and then he just ran up to us and yelled card for us to pay before we even got our drinks. We were actually gonna order food, but we ended up just having our drinks and leaving during our five minute experience he yelled at maybe five different people and the people next to us got up and left. We got a gluten free Tom Selleck and a negroni; both were great! My non-gf boyfriend really liked the pizza - rice flour; thin and crispy. The bartender was super nice and we enjoyed the atmosphere. I forgot my coins this time, but we're excited to come back and play arcade games. The only caveat is that it was $55 pre-tip for a drink and 12" pizza. The pizza was $30 (gf adds $4 and subtracts 2", lol - not complaining about that; I know how hard it is to make quality gf stuff). However, I saw on my receipt that the negroni was rung up as a gin + cosmo, I'm guessing because they don't have negronis in their system. The most I've ever been charged for a negroni was $14, so that was kind of off-putting. I'll be more proactive about inquiring after the costs of things here in the future. read more

This place is the most racist and xenophobic establishment I've ever visited in my 11 years of living in the U.S. The guy at the bar taking orders was extremely rude and discriminatory yesterday during the Super Bowl. First, I asked what types of non-alcoholic beverages he had, to which he replied in a very discriminatory way: "Just tell me what non-alcoholic drink you want." I said I was waiting for him to give me options, and then he rudely said he only had beers. During halftime, when Bad Bunny was performing, he completely lowered the volume and refused to turn it back up. When we arrived, the place was empty, even though all the other bars and restaurants in Ballard were at full capacity. Later, the bar started filling up, but at least half the people were Latino, including me. Around three or four of us asked him to please turn the volume up, and he refused. He only turned it back on after halftime ended, right after Bad Bunny finished performing. Finally, the cherry on top: I had a friend with a baby who came to enjoy the last five minutes of the Super Bowl. He approached us and said they had to leave. My friend explained she had checked Google Maps, which said the place accepts minors because it's a restaurant/bar, and offered to sit on the other side, away from the bar. He said no--they had to leave. When her husband asked for a logical explanation, he said minors are allowed, but not that day because it was the Super Bowl. My friend said that still wasn't logical, and he replied, "You simply need to leave because THIS IS AMERICA." My friends responded, "We know this is America because we are American citizens." We then left to watch the end of the game at another bar down the street. When I looked online, I saw many other reviews complaining about him being racist, xenophobic, homophobic, and extremely rude. My experience confirms all of that. I will not return and strongly advise others to avoid this place. read more

The regular guy who works here all the time for over two years has the worst fricking attitude for someone who works in customer service. They don't list what kind of pie slices they have to offer and if you ask you get a rude response from him. He hasn't changed and probably never will. To top it off, a family with a child was told they had to leave even though the place is listed as allowing minors. When they asked for an explanation, the response they received was dismissive and came across as unnecessarily hostile. Between the rude service, uncomfortable atmosphere, and the way customers were treated, this was a deeply disappointing experience. Pros: (1) Chill karaoke spot. We went on a Friday night, there were people singing karaoke around 12.30am but it wasn't too crowded so I liked that. (2) Best part was they were still selling pizza slices past midnight and we really needed pizza in our bellies at the time ha! But they only sell cheese pizza slices after midnight. (3) Some of the mixed drinks were actually good. I got the easy peasy. (4) The karaoke guy and the bartenders were actually nice. Cons: (1) Some drinks were not great. I stopped by and got wings and one of the cocktails on the menu. The menu says the wings are naked but they are either coated in something or fried in a weird way. It's like there's a rock hard, flavorless layer covering the chicken. And it's dry--sauce comes in a small container on the side. Just not very enjoyable. My cocktail was not good. Can't remember the name but it was in the menu as a speciality cocktail. It was incredibly sour (and I love tart drinks) like I was just drinking lime juice. And the mint flavoring was not good. I don't know what I'm missing here when looking at the other reviews. I've been here twice and both visits were lackluster. Maybe it's a standard thing? I can see the attraction here is that it's kind of a "hip" spot where all the 20 somethings run to as they're open pretty late and have pizza. It's got cool art on the wall, Hip hop blasting with a ping pong table, pinball and more. That's all fine though I suppose but seems more like a hangout spot first and the drinks and pizza are secondary. It's especially evident with the quality. Both my visits here the pizza was burnt, hard, not very cheesy slices for almost $6 a slice. Granted the pizza slices are big, but I'd rather have small slices that are good then these cardboard tasting pizzas. This is bar pizza, so the pepperonis are small which is passable, but there is a lack of consistency on them. The drinks are alright, maybe the best thing about this place. Staff is eh. They aren't unwelcoming, but they aren't very inviting either. All staff come off as inattentive and uninterested. So, drinks are decent and if you want a late night hang out Vera's ok, but outside of that it's forgettable. read more

Terrible night out at Vera's. Not only is the pizza subpar, but my group felt very disrespected. In a group that is not predominantly white, the bartender served my friends a drink, then 5 minutes later turned on the lights and kicked everyone out. He told us to, "go home and watch the diddy documentary". We asked if we could finish (less than half) of our drinks and he refused and told us to get out. This was at 1:00am. Don't serve people if you won't let them finish the drink they paid for, giving only 5 minutes. I live in Ballard and have a great time at all of the bars, except Vera's. Felt very uncomfortable and disrespected when we were all just trying to enjoy our night. Not worth the visit, there's better bars and better pizza in Ballard. It used to be a perfectly authentic diner, but they greywashed it, added a bunch of chintzy decor you would find in a teenage girls bedroom (snowflake stick-ons, pink rope lights), tuned the radio exclusively to west coast rap, and dispensed of traditional restaurant staples like plates and bowls in favor of the cheapest paper serving materials possible. All this while still charging $30 for a pizza and $9 for a draft - which I get because it is Ballard after all. That said - there are assets to build on and as an eternal optimist I'd love to see these folks put a little more effort in, redecorate, be more attentive to customers, and buy some dinnerware because the pizza's quite decent, the beer is cold, and it's in the heart of Ballard. read more

I've been here on multiple occasions and have enjoyed it each time. It's a great place for a casual hangout with friends, and usually isn't too busy. It is in downtown Ballard, which makes it a bit hidden and hard to find parking. Each time we've been, the food has been consistent - hot, yummy, and cheesy! We get the STG and a Veggie Supreme, with a side of garlic knots. They have a couple arcade games and even a ping-pong table, which is a nice touch. This is definitely a great spot for some comfort pizza, and I'd recommend giving it a shot :-) read more

Vera's is...so weird. The ambiance? Weird. It seems like a strange question, but does this even count as AN ambiance? NOTHING goes together in here. There are some cool pieces of art on the back wall, and nice modern-industrial light fixtures at the booths...and that's where the rational design choices end. Front doors that open directly to the SIDE (not the front) of a check/host stand? Instantly feels weird when you walk in. Chairs out of a 1950's Chinese restaurant paired with modern budget vinyl plank flooring and chintzy new black/chrome booths? So weird. That random ladder they have laying behind the skeeball machine in full view of everyone? Weird. Bright ass unshielded pink light bulbs in a wedge-shaped bathroom? Weird. Zebra pattern flooring?! Fucking weird! And possibly the weirdest thing about Vera's - the pizza was really. damn. good. Better than I'd like to admit, actually. The crust and sauce are both money- flaky and crunchy, and perfectly tangy and tomato-y...respectively. It just might be my new favorite pizza in Ballard. The wings were great too, fried nice and crispy and served with the sauces on the side. The salad also hit - we got the Greek, veggies were all very fresh and the dressing was surprisingly tasty. As far as service, we seated ourselves, and had to walk over and perform an elaborate circus dance to get the bartender's attention each time we needed something. Service is kind and attentive. New York style pizza is good, but for those looking for similar pizza, I'd say pagliaccis surpasses in quality and flavor profile. The bar was empty. While the pizza was hot, it was soggy and greasy. We had a vegan pizza. I won't ever recommend Vera's to anyone.
