I've tried the nachos and penne as well and both were delicious. Service is pretty good, you seat yourself and someone takes your order. Coming back to SunCafe after about three years felt nostalgic -- it's one of those places that's been part of the vegan scene for a while. I went with the Beyond Burger and a jackfruit taco. The burger was solid; flavorful, well put together, and something I'd definitely get again. The taco was a nice addition too. The space is still beautiful and has that relaxed, sit-down energy that's perfect if you're not in a rush. I will say, I would've appreciated a little more guidance when it came to choosing items on the menu, especially with so many options. But overall, the food still holds up. Fantastic spot for everyone! I've been vegetarian for over 10 years and SunCafe is authentically vegan in the best way. They offer everything from raw kale lasagna (a personal fave) to cheesecake. The food is always so fresh and delicious. The dining is so fun as they offer a gorgeous outdoor patio and cozy inside seating options. The staff just make the restaurant a 5-star experience. Everyone is so kind, from the wait-staff to the cooks. Very easy to park here as they have their own lot and plenty of on-street parking. Its also close to Universal Studios and Ventura. Unfortunately, like most vegan places, they have had to add some pescetarian menu items to reach to a wider audience. I know this can seem a bit disappointing to some, but it's completely understandable and actually works if you bring a friend who typically prefers non-plant-based protein (a.k.a my bestie lol). I tried the Mac and Cheese and the Blueberry Cheesecake. The Blueberry Cheesecake was delicious, it's a beautiful purple color with fresh blueberries layered in the middle. The Mac and Cheese was interesting, in terms of taste it was decent but the top baked layer was a bit hard and rubbery. I agree with many of the past reviews that certain items need more work. I love SunCafe! It always hits. The nachos are a go-to for me and they did not dissapoint. The uncharged amethyst i think its called is amazing! Love a good mocktail/tonic. It's so pretty! My friend and i shared the white truffle pizza with gluten free crust and it was DELICIOUS! Probably should have passed on the dessert as we were already full and I didn't feel the cheese cake really added anything to our experience as it was a bit more bland than the other flavorful items we ordered. Everything we have had at SunCafe has been soooooo flavorful! From nachos, to smoothies, to benny- all have been excellent. The service can be a bit hit or miss, sometimes it's a bit slow when it's not even busy. And both times we have dined here, they play explicit hip/hop or rap, which is not the most chill to dine to, especially during brunch. My biggest regret about SunCafe, though, is that they started to serve fish and dairy. I understand this may open them up to more business? First of all, it features a cozy at-home feeling (this was probably once a house) both indoors and outdoors. This restaurant is mainly vegan and organic (which I LOVE!), but I recently noticed they created a vegetarian menu and just read a recent review stating they are also serving fish now. I know this can be very disappointing for vegans because it may seem like a purpose shift; and although I am vegetarian, I feel you because it was such an unexpected change, and the thought of cross-contamination is concerning--especially with fish. I am not sure why they decided to make this change because I've tried vegan sea food from many places and it's always been a hit. Now back to the point of why it's worthwhile: Third, food is amazing! Although kind of pricey, they do serve adequate portions, and organic restaurants are not too common, which is why we pay extra for it when we can. My favorite dishes are the Vegan breakfast burrito, Belgian waffle, Jackfruit and Mushroom tacos, Lasaña, and I recently tried their Portobello sandwich, which was delicious! I also love their fresh juices. However, their iced matcha was not my favorite; I only ordered it twice but both times I had it, it lacked in flavor because it either needed more matcha or less milk and ice. I wish the bread was a little thicker. I think you can get a way better avocado toast for a better price at black heart coffee. Speaking of coffee, the coffee here is pretty mid. Since there were no open tables, I politely asked another woman if I could share hers, and she said yes. A redheaded waitress came over, assumed we were friends, and when I explained we weren't, her tone immediately shifted. She sharply told me it was "wait to be seated" and walked away. I went inside to calmly ask if I had done something wrong, and instead of a simple explanation, she became hostile and accusatory--saying I was "encroaching" on the other guest's space. The interaction felt public and confrontational, and I left feeling bullied, singled out, and unwelcome. As a woman coming in alone for brunch, that already takes a certain level of comfort, and this made me feel unnecessarily uncomfortable. I now understand there is a sign indoors, but nothing clearly visible outside, which makes this confusing. This isn't the first time this has happened either. What made this unacceptable was not the policy--it was the way it was handled. I reached out through their website and never received a response. Well this was fantastic!! The "chicken" and waffles were sooooo good! My granddaughter had an açaí bowl and still lived up on our meal. I came here for brunch yesterday and was disappointed to see they are no longer vegan. I am happy that they still have the same vegan menu but I was a little worried my meal now might not really be vegan, since so many of the same menu options are now on the pescatarian menu. Nevertheless, the service was great and friendly and prompt. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived and we were the only ones sitting inside. We opted for some flavored lattes and French toast and waffles. The quality wasn't as good as it used to be and the French toast wasn't quite as flavorful but I did still enjoy it. What a gem within the city! We had just spent a long day of walking and riding at Universal Studios and it was pretty late by the time we reached the car.... Every server conducts themselves with both a professionalism and passion for their career which is obvious to see right off the bat. The menu is HUGE and caters to everything you may be in the mood for, and includes an ALL DAY breakfast menu which boasts arguably the greatest dish on the menu - The Breakfast Sandwich. If you've had it you know why I say that; if you haven't, have it. They service all types of cuisine - from French American to Italian to Japanese (including sushi and ramen!) to Mexican and even Greek/middle eastern. The drink menu is EXTENSIVE and includes freshly made smoothies and juices - sweet drinks which are topped only by their sweet treat desserts. On March 8, 2026, I was threatened in the parking lot by a Sun Cafe employee who verbally intimidated and harassed me. I've been a Sun Café customer for seven years, and it was my favorite restaurant, but this incident was terrifying and has made me afraid to return. It took a week to calm down and write an email to the owner/manager. I did not get a response, so I wrote a 2nd email to let them know that if I did not hear back by then, I would share my experience in a Yelp review. I let them know that I would prefer the opportunity to resolve this directly with them first but I received no response. I stopped by Sun Café that afternoon for take out, but instead decided to relax and sit at an outdoor table. A busser named AJ was standing near the door, and I asked him if they had the dessert I wanted, which had been sold out lately. He said, sharply, "I don't know, you'll have to ask your server." I asked if I needed someone to seat me in order to sit outside. He abruptly said, "Yes, I'll seat you." I followed him to one of the benches near the fire which was not on because it was hot outside. Those seats don't provide enough back support, so I asked if I could sit in the corner where it felt more comfortable. He abruptly said, "No, that table is reserved." I told him that I saw the reserved sign on a table on the other side of the patio but that there was no reserved sign on the table I wanted. He claimed they had many reservations for groups of 3 and 4 arriving soon. I told him that I'm a regular customer and that I often call ahead to reserve a table. When I arrive, the table has a reserved sign on it. He said, "I guess you're going to get your way," in a rude tone, and I said, "Thank you." I understand the restaurant business, and I would never ask to take a 4-top table when it was even slightly busy. There was only one table occupied outside. It was a warm day, and the other customers present were at tables inside. Two parties of two came in after me and they sat outside. They were served before me, but I was okay with it. I just wanted to relax. When the server came to take my order, she kindly let me know that they did not have the dessert I wanted. I asked her why they haven't had it lately, and she said the bakers aren't coming on the weekends. I decided to try something different but didn't care for it, so I asked for a to-go container to take for my husband. I sat for another 20 minutes, paid the bill at 3:06 p.m., and headed to my car. AJ was standing in the parking lot beside the garbage. I don't know how long he had been there, but it seemed like he was waiting for me. As I passed by, I heard him say something to the effect of, "I want to talk to you." I thought he was going to apologize for being so unfriendly. Maybe he was having a bad day. Instead, he threatened me and said, "Don't ever talk to me or any of my co-workers like that." I was thrown and said, "What are you talking about?" "You were arguing with me." I said, "I come here regularly and reserve a table. There was no reserved sign on the table, and the place was pretty much empty." He said, " You are still arguing with me." I felt afraid and I told him that I wanted to talk with the manager. He said his boss was my server. I went inside and spoke with her and told her how upset I was that AJ approached me in the parking lot. She apologized and told me why he didn't want me to sit there. She said he should have explained that and should have said I could sit there this time because it was empty. I told her I would have appreciated that. I told her that this was my favorite restaurant and that I regularly introduce it to people who have never heard of it. Because of this incident, I didn't want to come back. She said that she would talk with AJ. She was very kind and treated me the way I felt any business should treat a customer. I actually own a business, and quality customer service is essential to our success. In my email to the owner, I said I loved their menu, the atmosphere, and some of their servers who go above and beyond, like Ricardo and Jack. That's why over the years I have recommended Sun Café to anyone who asks for dining suggestions. My hostile encounter with AJ changed that. Because I've heard nothing back from the owner ensuring customer safety, I won't recommend Sun Café to anyone. We ordered a vegan version of the SunCafe Breakfast Plate with 3 slices of BeLeaf bacon, waffle, and extra crispy hashbrowns. What we got was partially uncooked hashbrowns and 2 half-sized vegan bacon "squares." I called to request a partial refund for the breakfast plate and was offered an in-person credit. I asked for a manager and was hung up on. When I called back, the gal said that there was no manager on duty and did not know if/when one would be on-site. I then asked how to contact the owners and was angrily told to email them before being hung up on. She would not give me her name.
