I can't say enough good things about SunCafe! An amazing assortment of both vegan and gluten-free options. They also seem to have started serving fish and eggs as well for non-vegans. Their desserts are amazing. Their vegan gluten-free mud pie is one of my favorite desserts in all of LA. I feel a little hesitant to post about it because I don't want them to sell out. Hahaha Their vegan gluten-free lasagna is pretty delicious. I've also had many of their sandwiches, which are very solid as well. Everything here except what is in the paper printed menu is V/V+. On top of that you'll find that these are some of the best recipes produced so they're not only healthy their delicious as well. The paper menu seems to accompany the regular menu in case someone in your party happens to not be V or V plus. Portions were larger than expected, and can easily be split between two people and most cases. Desserts can go up to four for the larger skillet and ice cream sandwich. Because this restaurant is actually fairly spread out between a very large patio and a large segmented interior space, service can at times be a bit spotty because it's hard to see every customer in every location. put on the plus side this means your meal is not interrupted every five minutes with someone checking on you or taking things away. The dessert display at the front of the restaurant is a preview of the coming attractions and yes, they are as delicious as they look in the case. I love places like this where you completely forget that you're actually eating totally meatless things because the food is so delicious it never crosses your mind. There's anything different about it other than it's really great. There's parking for about 12 cars in the small lot in front of the restaurant and another dozen or so street parking with meters. This restaurant is also very ADA compliant. There's a small selection of zero alcohol tails, and I didn't see any nonalcoholic beers on the menu. But they do have a very wide coffee and tea selection. And their smoothies and other blended concoctions are extremely tasty and well worth the prices. read more

What was once a great restaurant with amazing vegan options has become a shell of itself. Our recent brunch takeout order is the last time we'll be supporting them. We ordered a vegan version of the SunCafe Breakfast Plate with 3 slices of BeLeaf bacon, waffle, and extra crispy hashbrowns. What we got was partially uncooked hashbrowns and 2 half-sized vegan bacon "squares." I called to request a partial refund for the breakfast plate and was offered an in-person credit. I asked for a manager and was hung up on. When I called back, the gal said that there was no manager on duty and did not know if/when one would be on-site. I then asked how to contact the owners and was angrily told to email them before being hung up on. She would not give me her name. I used the web form on their website but have not heard back. read more

If a non vegan restaurant serves vegan food, it's a win -- we want to encourage that. If they stop serving vegan food, it's disappointing. If a vegan restaurant starts serving non vegan after all these years, it's a betrayal. At that point just close the damn restaurant and reopen as something new. Most of my vegan friends did not know they switched about a year ago. I didn't even know until very recently. But best believe I'm telling everyone. I used to dine here all the time with friends, family and colleagues. Everyone in my circles who knew Suncafe knew it through me. Colleagues would say, hey for lunch do you want to go to that vegan restaurant you like? And I knew they were talking about this place. I guess the decision to start serving meat wasn't such a good idea after all. 100 dollars for two people and the plates were mostly piles of artistically arranged lettuce with some tiny bits of everything else nestled within. Nacho chips were the same quality one could get at a grocery store. Not good and we won't return. It was jam packed with the usual diner food except every single thing was vegan! I couldn't decide so I went with what the table next to me had- Sun Breakfast Plate with BeLeaf Bacon. I've always wanted something savory to go along with French toast but most places make you order those things separately. Not here! You get your sweet and savory in one plate. It seems every year I come back to this place and every time is an interesting experience. The service was mediocre and the food was average. When I first discovered this place, the food was good. When I returned today however, the food is no longer what it used to be. I always thought the food here was good, but this time was not. Their buffalo chicken sandwich was not good. The sandwich came out cold. The buns were cold and hard, the chicken wasn't crispy even though it was drenched in buffalo sauce I can tell it was old because there was no texture whatsoever. No flavor also. It was really bland it needed seasoning. Their Buffalo sauce was also bad. It was literally TABASCO. I can tell what hot sauce it was. It didn't even taste at all like buffalo sauce which is easy to replicate or even buy. Salad was a decent portion with the sandwich but the dressing wasn't what I remembered it to be. It tasted bland, lacked flavor. The salad was dressed but the dressing didn't taste like anything. It was more sour tasting than Caesar dressing. The breakfast panini portion was also SMALL. I was a bit surprised. Such a small sandwich with a small side of mash and gravy for $20+ Overall the experience wasn't great. Thinking back, I always remembered about this place and how good the food was and wanting to return. I don't live in the area and drive 40mins. However, I ordered the Eggs Benedict as did my friend...and they were served to us halfway through the meal of my other friends...the eggs were cold, watery and bland...I never knew that poached eggs could be so dull...I ordered the Lox and Avocado Benedict...the Lox (tiny portion) on the muffin, with avocado slices on the side not on the muffin. Truly unappetizing... I called the restaurant to tell management. I called twice...I never received a call back..I was asked from the first call, why I didn't tell the server or request another dish...but we were already waiting halfway through the meal of my friends and didn't want to wait another 20 minutes to eat. She called the waiter out on it and they moved the party of two to a two top table Around 35 mins after being here all the tables near us food starts coming out, so they must of waited longer and the kitchen is caught up. Heard a lot of apologizing from the main waitress outdoors to different tables. Maybe they're understaffed? I saw the "host" buss a table while sitting someone at it lol. My friend kept promising the food would makeup for the service. Just saw another couple complain about never being approached. Onto the positives: the beyond meat burger was amazing. The main reason I went there was because I wanted to try their pot pie and sea cakes(jackfruit), but looks like those were dinner items and cannot be served during brunch hours. So keep that in mind if you find something interesting on the menu. I liked their avocado toast and breakfast panini. I don't know what I love more about this place...the food or the cute oasis they've created. I can't choose but I do know my absolutely favorite thing on the menu is their Strawberry Cheesecake. I daydream about it constantly and I can't manage to be in the area without wanting to stop in for a slice. To me it's hands down the best vegan cheesecake I've tasted. Not crazy about the hotel, but found myself at this fantastic place several times. They are open every day, all day and night. This cozy little vegan restaurant serves some of the best vegan food I've ever tasted in my life. Took my mom here for her first vegan experience, and it was nothing short of lovely. We got there around 1:30, and it wasn't too busy. We sat on the outdoor patio and ordered Matcha Latte with oat milk and agave, the Omelette (it's made with mung bean, pico, spinach, veggies, mushrooms, Violife Parmesan and sour cream, topped with avocado) and a side of Caesar Salad, and I got the Baked Lasagna (brown rice noodles, walnut pesto, marinara, cashew ricotta & spinach, topped w/cashew cheese). Both dishes were so delicious. Our server, Paul, was nothing short of a lovely human being. Service was great, and we received our food in a timely manner. BBQ Chicken Salad (Lettuce, corn, tortilla chips, onions tomatoes, avocado, black beans, "chicken" w/dressing....) I forgot to ask what the Chicken was made with.... overall this dish was pretty good tasted almost exactly what I a BBQ Chicken Salad would be with chicken type nuggets in it. Mini Mac n Cheese (quinoa pasta w/tomato & cashew sauce baked in a cast iron skillet w/chives) - This was pretty good and tasty overall. Finally Mini Nachos (got it with Sunflower Chorizo) - Oh man how I miss Nachos since I try not to eat something like this anymore and especially because I don't eat cheese anymore.... Love the atmosphere, the food, cocktails, desserts, the staff members... you can't go wrong here! We have brought meat eaters here and they've loved the vegan fare. The nachos are without a doubt the best vegan nachos ever. This place is very allergy friendly. They are even conscious of people allergic to soy which is a standout since my fiancé is allergic to soy. A big stand out is they have breakfast all day. Love a place with this! Our pal got the breakfast plate and said everything was the best vegan eggs, pancakes she's ever had! This is the second time having the vegan sushi and it is SO FILLING. SO many flavors. It somehow tastes like real sushi... and I am a huge sushi lover. I am convinced SunCafe has cracked the case on how to make the best vegan food with flavors that are out of this world. The parking is small but they do have a parking lot, otherwise it's street parking. The dessert selection is UNREAL. It's huge. Driving from San Bernardino to San Francisco, I needed to stop for some food before heading up north. I found SunCafe on the map and directly along my route so I stopped by for a quick brunch. I sat on their cute outdoor patio and perused their all-vegan & all-organic menus. So many delicious options that made it difficult to choose! I chose the 'Just Egg' veggie omelet with a side of Caesar salad. I also ordered the White Truffle Pizza to-go so I could easily eat while driving in the car. I'm a big fan of Just Egg, so I really enjoyed the omelet. The veggies inside are well-cooked and seasoned nicely. The Caesar salad arrived really dry so I had to request more dressing. Overall the portion size is perfect for one person. I thought the white truffle pizza is a bit dry, even when it came out fresh, but at least it made it easy to eat while driving. The crust is made from whole wheat and it is topped with a white truffle sauce and a variety of veggies. Overall, the flavor is good but can just use a little more sauce. I've been a fan of SunCafe for a long, long time, but somehow I've only done breakfast/brunch a couple times. What a miss on my part! It's so so good; I really need to make this a regular thing. I ordered the wet burrito which comes with quinoa, black beans, peppers, onion, and Just Egg. My partner got the Sun Plate which is Just Egg, tempeh bacon, hash browns, and French toast. I drank an amazing dirty chai latte and she got regular coffee. Only complaint was the coffee was a dark roast; she prefers medium or light. No biggie! The brunch menu is substantial and varied. The coffee and tea menu is similarly bigger than I realized, since I'm used to coming here for dinner, alcohol, or smoothies. Truffle mushroom pizza (4.5/5) - tried this and while it was really good, I wish the GF crust has more options as I'm trying to avoid rice/carbs (crust made w brown rice). Every vegan restaurant is a fav for me! We stopped by on a Tuesday at around 7pm and were able to squeeze into the parking lot and grab a spot by the heaters on the patio! We ordered the "favorites" per the menu: the raw nachos, lasagna, and mini mac n cheese. The mac n cheese was definitely a FAVORITE--wouldn't have guessed that it was vegan as it was super "cheesy!". The nachos were great as well, but I didn't love the jicama chips as they were not supportive of the toppings. I ended up going home and baking it so it would be slightly crispier. Lasagna was so so good as well, again, would not have guessed that it was vegan! We also ordered some "cheesecake" to bring home. At $15 a slice, it was slightly expensive but so so good. Not creamy like an actual cheesecake, but it had the texture of frozen yogurt (not the actual dessert like Yogurtland but as if you froze some greek yogurt at home). Having gone to this restaurant for many years and brought many business associates with me , it is safe to say my business wasn't appreciated so I won't be going back. A waitress took issue with me paying with a $100 bill (major no no!), when she couldn't come back with proper change I paid close to the full due bill without a tip as a result. When I came back weeks later the same waitress unbelievably started badgering me about shorting her $2 the prior time for not having correct change for the $100 cash. She then said the restaurant doesn't prefer cash and has been robbed many times. I told her that's great she won't see anymore cash from me then ! Won't be coming back ! FOOD: I am basing this only on four items that we ordered. First, as a starter we ordered the gyoza. The menu indicates you'll get five. We received four. I'm not going to say that we complained because we didn't and, it may have been that this was the happy hour size/price and I tend to remain cool and pretty quiet about such things the first time I visit any establishment. The cauliflower steak dish (pictured) was good. I enjoyed it. The sauce was satisfying. The potatoes were well-seared, but I would have preferred some more seasoning for the two side veggies; they were dependent on that sauce for a lot of their flavor. The caramelization of the cauliflower was good on one side, but more of it on both sides would have given it that umami punch that it needed on its own. The French cut green beans were not al dente, but still retained their color and fresh flavor, so that's good. My companion had the baked lasagna. It is touted as their most popular dish. She enjoyed it, but said that she would probably order something else next time. She was eyeing the lentil loaf, so I believe that's the next dish she will be having in the future. Dessert was the pistachio cheesecake. That earned the title of "best of the meal." It was well-presented, full of pistachio flavor, with a pleasant pecan/date crust. I'm a fan of cashew whipped cream, so I immediately took possession of the little decorative swirl on top with pistachios and goji berries. It wasn't cloyingly sweet, which made us both very happy. Just the right amount of sweetness, with the right-sized portion for its richness, made for a good end to the meal. We chose to finish it off with the rest of our $9 bottle of water, even though a cup of joe would have been preferable. AMBIANCE: Cute patio. OPTIONS:: There are a lot of food options. Many would satisfy any non-vegan or non-vegetarian friends. PRICING: Alarming. Thank heavens the ostensibly wealthy man's iced tea does comes with refills PARKING: Given that when we arrived, we were one of 3 tables, the parking lot was surprisingly full. So be prepared to pay for parking at the meters on Ventura, or I wish you the best of luck finding parking in the winding street behind the restaurant. *As we checked in, another one of the small number of patrons at the time pointed out a cockroach in the interior dining area.
