I struggle with vegan food being a more approachable option for the omnivore in me but I've found two things to be true 1. Vegan food is either fantastically delicious or completely awful. 2. There is (in my experience) no such thing as average vegan food. That being said, my food was not only delicious, but I'm pleasantly able to report I feel no post heaviness after eating either. Now, my only real problem with vegan chicken is reconciling the texture of it, and while it's something to get accustomed to, the crispy "chicken" I ate in a sandwich was pretty tasty. The bacon and vegan cheese was also pretty solid on the fries, though if I was to slightly critique anything, the bacon was more akin to the taste of a crouton. However, the vegan cheese was a wonderful flavor and was very nice to chow down on. Overall, this is the reason I love LA, because even eating fake chicken is exciting when it's executed masterfully. Stopped by this place while on my way back from a hike and I'm so glad I did. FOOD My friend got the vegan burger and fries and I got the D fries. They were so freakin tasty. The combination of sauces was a party in my mouth that I was not expecting. Somehow they'd layered the sauce so it got just the right amount on all the fries. SERVICE Air was our server and she was so cool and very helpful. I was hoping they had matcha but they didn't, and she happily gave us a recommendation of a stellar matcha place nearby. AMBIANCE It was a quieter place and had patio seating that was perfect for people watching on such a great day. I will be returning to this place and trying other items. Decided to try something from here for lunch delivery, menu said they had a chicken Caesar wrap which is my favorite wrap ever, and the best part? It's all vegan/vegetarian! Granted I eat chicken but I've found more often I prefer the soy versions. Anyway lunch arrives and the fries smell amazing, not crunchy which is a shame because that would make them perfect but they are seasoned and taste good! But the wrap! I was a little iffy on the veganaise, I haven't had it before but that odd tangy taste of it was not a bother! There's so much lettuce and the chicken pieces are just so tasty. Oh how I love Something Vegan!! The best chicken tenders are here and I still can't get over how delicious they were. My cousins and I have a group dinner here and everyone left beyond satisfied. This Toluca Lake hidden gem has been on the seen since 2017, located off Riverside Drive near other local great spots such as Patys, Bob's Big Boy and many longstanding greats. Bae and I branch out to a place he'd never been and hit up this Something grand. It never dawn on me that their breakfast/brunch items are a bit limited, but I went with their "Chicken" & Pancake while he had The Coconut Curry w/ a side of brown rice. We loved it all. From dining outside on a beautiful morning to the vibes and view of Riverside Dr, to the excellent service, ambiance and company. It was pretty buy for them around 1245/1pm with many people dining outside as well as in. They offer a variety of beverages from hot or iced teas to lemonade, soft drinks, juice, kombucha, aloe vera, still or sparkling water and coffee. For eats it's curries, rice dishes, noodle plats, wraps, burgers, soups, a la carte and specialities, like their C & P I had and loved for my latest meal. But I've had so much of the menu over 8+ years. Highly recommend those Dynamite Drumsticks and Fries, all the wraps, fried rice, curries, burgers, apps and HEAVENLY "beef." Great proteins such as Soy Chicken, Soy Steak, Tofu, Cauliflower, and Soy Shrimp. Gluten free and/or gluten free option items throughout the menu, even for burgers (gluten free bun option). I usually order for delivery , but I found myself in the area and decided to order for pickup since I didn't know how long the wait would be. My order was ready within 5 minutes of arriving. Since there was no one dining in I thought it would be okay to eat a couple bites before heading out. I was wrong, as soon as I was about to start eating my food, the cashier came up to me and told me that I could not eat at their location because I ordered for pick up. This would make complete sense if the restaurant was busy and people were waiting on a table, but that was not the case (it was completely empty). The approach was very rude as well. One of my favorite vegan spots in all of Los Angeles! Something Vegan has a lot of Asian Fusion type dishes, but also a few super unique menu items, such as the absolutely DIVINE Carbonara Pasta! This pasta is one of my favorites PERIOD, not just for vegan pastas! I love how generous the portions are and hearty, creamy, and rich it tastes. Also, since it's vegan, it doesn't give you the same feeling of bloated heaviness you'll sometimes get from other super creamy and non-vegan pastas. There's also plenty of toppings on it that add great texture and crunch! My love for the food here doesn't end at the pasta, however. Everything is great!! For starters, my favorite are the gyoza dumplings - perfectly crispy on the edges and deliciously mushy inside. I seriously can never tell a difference between these and regular, non-vegan gyoza while I'm eating them It's also served with a very generous number that can easily be shared. The Drunken Noodles are another great option with great heat and texture from the peppers and other toppings, with the soy chicken (the protein we usually go with) tasting SO legit!! For soups, I love adding on one of the Coconut Soups. Reasonably priced at $11, it has a very hearty size and comes with a subtle heat to complement the creaminess of the delicious broth. Yum!! Quick side note - apologies for the lack of photos....I'll have to remember to take some the next time I get food here!! The restaurant itself is small, but very clean and cute inside, with plenty of seating options. We usually order this restaurant for delivery, but today I decided to pick up my order my myself. As always, everything here is amazing. My daughter and I are both meat eaters, but absolutely love this place. Both of our go-tos is the Something Pho with the tofu and an extra hoisin sauce. We throw everything except the chile in our bowl and it makes for the most amazing bowl of pho. It's so much food that we always have enough to have leftovers. Some of our favorite starters are the Golden Tofu (the fried tofu paired with the sweet tamarind sauce is amazing), the Nacho Supreme (that cashew cheese is to die for), the Trio Tacos with tofu (put some of that green sauce on those babies and you've got a match made in heaven), and the Dynamite Drumsticks (a little more than a tiny kick of spice, but so so good!). Today we decided to get a side of Golden Tofu and tried their Summer Rolls, which comes with a side of peanut sauce. Without the sauce they're very bland, and as much as we liked the peanut sauce, the sweet tamarind sauce that came with the golden tofu was amazing with these! Now here's my review for going inside the restaurant. First of all, parking was really crummy. I wished they had parking in the rear, but honestly, I love their food so much that fighting for a spot on the street was worth it. It's a bummer that the curb is red in front of the restaurant, but people were parking there anyway. I got lucky and found a spot on the side street right next to the restaurant. You can order for pickup directly on their app, and they're punctual with my estimated pickup time. The restaurant was absolutely packed when we were there, which is a good thing because it shows how good their food is. Most of us were there to pick up our orders and I only saw a few people sitting inside, there were more people sitting outside on the patio. The employees were giving out orders of food left and right and did a great job doing so, I didn't have to wait at all to let them know my name for pick up. Overall I have had a pretty decent experience at Something Vegan. They have a very extensive menu, ranging from burgers to noodles/Asian-fusion dishes, to salads. You can find pretty much anything you are looking for, but make it vegan. They definitely live up to their name! I recently had the Impossible burger with fries when I went, and it was great. Nothing to complain about and the fries were crispy and well-seasoned. I wasn't as big of a fan of the cheese fries, as they got a bit soggy after 10 minutes. My friend loves the cheese fries here though, so it's depends on your preferences. You can order to eat in or do take-out. We sat inside this most recent time and it was pleasant. There are quite a few tables inside and during good weather, they have a patio for outdoor seating too. The ambiance is super chill, and our service was fine. The servers didn't engage much during the meal apart from bringing water and taking our order in the beginning, which for the most part is fine, but we were waiting quite awhile for them to come around with the check after we finished our meal. There was a long hair cooked into our appetizer. I checked to make sure it wasn't mine, but the hair was embedded in the batter and couldn't be pulled out. What's upsetting is how they handled it. They should have simply shown basic customer service and apologized. "I'm sorry, I'll remove this from your table", and I would have been just fine. Instead they lied, gave attitude, and didn't handle it correctly. I made them remove it off my table and give me a refund. They also said their cooks wear hairnets, which is a lie. I came here last night for some takeout when I was in the area and was too tired and busy to cook. I've dined in a few times before and have always had a great experience. The food is so tasty and the service is always very prompt and friendly. The restaurant has a great vibe and is clean and well maintained with comfortable seating both inside and outside. The menu is eclectic and varied from Thai to Italian and they consistently do it all well. I've had the carbonara in the past which was wonderful but I had a craving for Thai food, so I opted for the pad see ew and I did not regret it! I added some vegan chicken which had a lovely soft yet chewy texture and balanced out the pillowy noodles. The sauce was just the right amount of tangy with the slightest sweetness. There was a very mild spice to it as well. It left me feeling great after eating and wasn't overly oily! There are some things that are absolutely BOMB and some that didn't quite hit the mark. The crowd favorite when we went was definitely the Portabello Fries. This is a must-order. The sweet ranch sauce paired with the freshly fried Portabello slices...ooh la la just so good. The orange chicken is another hit. The sauce is a little tangier than I imagined, but the texture tasted like real chicken. The Khao Soi was also good - not quite as deep of a flavor as I was used to, but still creamy. I also ordered the Carbonara, which...was interesting. I can't tell if I liked or disliked it. I'm a huge fan of cashew cream, but maybe after awhile things became one note. I did like that there were "bacon" AND "chicken" in it. One thing I do love about this place is that the food comes out piping fresh n hot. You can tell everything is fresh from the kitchen. I think if I come back, I would definitely lean in on ordering their Thai inspired dishes. I think those definitely taste better when vegan-fied! The nachos were very good, almost like non-vegan nachos! The Dynamite Drumsticks were soy-based and quite meaty. The food here is not so good. Chicken Pad Thai noodles came soaking wet swimming in a pool of super sweet sauce, the chicken was all dried out and hard. Dynamite Fries were again covered in a really sweet sticky thick jam-like sauce, just complete overkill on these fries. Sauce is way too thick and heavy it doesn't make the dish better. Chicken Drumsticks -again covered in a super sweet sticky sauce but this time it belonged on the dish- it was a good compliment to the crispy drumsticks and had some heat so it wasn't terrible. This was probably the best dish. They have many things marked GF but they fry them in the same fryer as the gluten food so that's not really GF at all. If you have celiac or gluten allergies beware they don't have a separate fryer for the non gluten items. read more
