Taisho has been around for a number of years now, and it still manages to maintain its cool ambiance and buzzing crowd. Would I come here for authentic, truly masterful Japanese food? No. This isn't that kind of place, and Taisho doesn't have that kind of menu. However, is this a good place to listen to decent music, sip a fun cocktail, and pass around some aesthetic Asian fusion dishes? Absolutely. It's a vibe on the weekends, there's semi-patio seating in the back, and there's valet parking right out front on Ventura Blvd. Taisho is a good option for dinner before a night out, or to catch up with a friend. Seating options are plentiful, too. The bar area is nice, the seats are comfy. The interior can fill up during peak hours. The outside seating in the front is a hard pass for me because it's so close to the street and seems isolated from the rest, but some people do prefer to sit out there. Street parking is available albeit competitive. Don't forget to pay the meter and check posted signs.
My friends love this place, and now I understand why. The drinks are always great, and the spicy tuna crispy rice is some of the best I've ever had. I ordered the crispy chicken, which was good, but I'd probably skip it next time and just order more crispy rice. My friends also swear by the sides. Great drinks, great atmosphere, and definitely worth a visit.
UNFORTUNATE-My friend and I recently had dinner here and, overall, the food was outstanding and the service during our meal was excellent. The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere, and we genuinely enjoyed our evening. The reason I'm leaving 1 star instead of 5 is because of what happened at the end of our visit. The meal ended up costing more than I had anticipated, so while I did leave a tip, it was smaller than I would normally prefer. After I paid, our server approached me and questioned the amount of the tip. I was surprised and uncomfortable being asked to explain my gratuity. I understand that tips are an important part of restaurant service, but I don't think guests should be confronted about the amount they leave. It's unfortunate because the food and service throughout the meal were excellent, and this single interaction changed my final impression.
This is probably my 4th or 5th time coming here for GNO/Bday get-togethers. And this place never disappoints because with their extensive menu, we always end up loving what we order and my girlfriends end up coming back with their other friends. Here's a list of dishes and drinks that we've tried and loved: Cocktails: Fusion, watermelon margarita, ventura heat Brussels sprouts chips Yellowtail serrano Green Beans Miso Eggplant Tofu Mushroom tobanyaki (this was the unexpected star of the show!) Popcorn Shrimp Seabass (we ordered 3) Salmon Truffle Roll Butter Cake We went on a weekday night and boy oh boy was the whole place packed for dinner and bar seating, from front patio to the back courtyard! I definitely recommend getting reservations ahead of time. The best seating is the beautiful courtyard in the back. Our server was Aidan. Thank you Aidan for your great service. The dishes were staggered and family style so we didn't feel rushed nor were we waiting too long in between. There is valet parking. Street parking is a hit or miss....this is Ventura Blvd btw so IYKYK. Make sure to bookmark this place, you won't be disappointed!
I had a gift card for here and I've heard good things so I was given the opportunity to try this place out. We went for happy hour on a friday evening and were seated right away. We ended up basically getting half of the happy hour menu. We ordered the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice ($8), Crispy Chicken ($12), Seared Albacore ($16), Yellowtail Serrano ($16), and Salmon Truffle Roll ($16). For drinks we ordered both happy hour cocktails, the Fusion and the Yuzu Margarita ($12 each). Outside of the happy hour menu we also ordered the Chef's Choice 5 Piece Sushi. Everything we ordered was amazing. The fish was so fresh and the drinks were really strong. The crispy chicken definitely helped the most in getting us full. The chef's choice was also great because you get to try out multiple items and see what you like, even though we ended up liking all of them. Our server passed by often and was easy to wave down whenever we needed anything. They checked up on us often and whenever we requested anything they were quick to bring them out to us. It is quite far from me but I'm glad I tried it. I will definitely add this to the list of places to return to when I'm back in the area though!
TLDR: 5/5 A spacious well lit and fun interior with a nice assortment of tasty food and great service to go along with it Ordered: Shishito Peppers: 5/5 - First time having Shishito and honestly they were so tasty. They're not hot at all so they're just a nice good crispy vegetable with a tangy type of hoisin sauce. Great sharable option Brussel Sprouts: 4/5 - I mean they're great, if you don't know how to eat a vegetable this is a great way to get some in your system but why have the Brussels when you can have the Peppers I just mentioned?? Crudo w Crispy Onions - 3/5 I think this is really good for someone. I just think the flavors didn't harmonize that well for me. The fish was tender though! Salmon Crudo - 5/5 - Simple, light, and a great palette cleanser Popcorn Shrimp Tempura - 4/5 - These do remind me of Funnel Cake in the best way possible. With that said its it's a great shareable option. On its own I think it'd be too sweet and heavy. They give you plenty to go around though! Spicy Tuna with Crispy Rice - 4.5/5 - Oh mama these are a mouthful literally. The proportion of rice to fish is once that every other establishment should take note on. With that said I think the Spicy tuna was just a hair bland (perhaps stacked against the crudo it's a tough spot to be in) but it still delivers. Spicy Albacore - 5/5 - A fan favorite for sure I think we got this twice. Its light and citrusy with a good bite from the jalapenos. These rolls too are stuffed to the brim so when its good, you can eat good as well. Yuzu Kosho Roll - 4.8/5 - Close runner up. At Taisho I think they do the citrus skewing rolls really well here. The flavors are well balanced and make the fish stand out Sweet and Spicy Crab Roll - 4/5 - Definitely run in the mill all these considered out of this line up but that doesn't mean its not good there's just better ones. I think the flavor has potential to be better! Service: 5/5 We made a reservation for 8 ahead of time and were seated sort of in the heart of the restaurant but there's still so much room and arrangements you never really felt like it was super busy. The staff were so on top of it to accommodate. Dishes arrived in record time, glasses filled without us needing to ask, alterations were accepted. We had a birthday and they were so incredibly patient to make sure our whole party was there to bring out the cupcakes we got. God bless them we had no idea they were waiting in the kitchen! But they treated us not only with our own cupcakes served but their dessert as well. Truly unreasonable hospitality Vibe: 5/5 As I said this is kind of a vibe. I think there's a special event for anyone here: whether catching up with the girls, first date, just grabbing a drink at the bar, or celebrating a birthday. Parking: N/A Its ventura, it is what it is. However this is on a not as populated area of ventura so there's a slight ~just slightly~ better chance to find metered parking, which gives me more peace of mind than most of ventura would. I'd recommend this place to anyone. Excited to go back!
Shareable and bite able food! We ordered the Yozu sushi roll and it was absolutely delicious. For desserts, their butter cake happily didn't taste like a butter stick so it was delicious. Willow our server was very kind and attentive. Dark ambiance and calm vibe.
Service was great! We had an awesome server, David. Shoutout to him for helping our group have a fun night! Delicious food. Great drinks.
I have been meaning to try this gem for quite some time. I came here for a cute date night and the ambiance is very sleek & chic but very inviting & cozy at the same time. Staff were very friendly and other waiters (and even the manager at one point) stepped in to assist when the spot got a little busy. That being said let's get into the food. I don't have many pics of the dishes but that's simply because I inhaled them upon arrival (and I'm not ashamed to admit it lol). We ordered the yellowtail serrano sashimi which was my favorite. It was fresh with just the right amount of heat. The rib eye wrapped asparagus was great but we ordered the rib-eye medium and I think I would have enjoyed the dish much better if it were medium-rare. That's my bad though. The filet mignon japonais was so tender and flavorful I should have ordered a second one! You also can't go wrong with a spicy tuna over crispy rice. If it's on the menu babe, I'm ordering it. I really enjoyed the lobster roll. The miso hollandaise was a very interesting addition, but it works. I loved it! Last but not least we ordered the Kumamoto oysters. They are petite but they are the main event! Should have ordered another have dozen lol!

Daniel (manager) made the visit somehow better even though I really only care about the food. Upscale casual environment with outdoor seating as well. Coming back to try everything. First time here, and I've been meaning to try Taisho for a long time--so glad we finally did because we were definitely impressed and really enjoyed our time. The hosts and servers were very friendly. Our server, Sarah, was especially kind and helpful. She was patient, gave great recommendations, and truly made the experience even better. Everything we ordered was amazing: the spinach salad, lobster roll, spicy albacore roll, toro sushi, crispy chicken, and a few other dishes I can't even remember because we ate it so fast I didn't get to take pictures. It was all so fresh and delicious. My husband is very picky, especially with sushi, and even he was really impressed--he already promised to take me back. The restaurant has a really nice, date-night vibe, even though we were there with a baby and family. They were very accommodating with the stroller, and we loved the atmosphere and the music--not too loud, just right. Great food, beautiful aesthetic, excellent service, and high quality overall. They also offer convenient valet plus street parking. We'll definitely be coming back soon. Highly recommend!

I've been meaning to try this place for so long after a good recommendation from a friend. Finally go to try it out on a date night last week and was so satisfied. Highly recommend making reservations because otherwise you'll get sat in the very loud main room. I got us a table using my Amex Resy benefit and got sat in the quieter back room near the kitchen. Otherwise, it's way too loud to hear each other speak. Recommendations: As somebody who isn't a fan of Brussels sprouts, believe me when I say these crispy Brussels sprouts will change your mind. They're SO good, they taste like savory chips. Not overly truffley like many restaurants tend to do. If the special is still available, please do yourself a favor and order the Snapper Tostada. They're so perfectly created, no notes. Every bite is perfectly balanced, wouldn't change a thing. Only comes with two tostadas, so if your party is larger, order more. Everything else was good but not so incredible to write home about. Ingredients do taste very fresh and well made however some things are a bit off. Snapper carpaccio needs maybe an oil or a slightest bit of sauce something. Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice isn't crispy enough. Yuzu Kosho roll tastes more of avocado than it does of yellowtail. For the price, I'd probably just get sushi rolls elsewhere. Skip the fried rice. Great portion sizes for every item. Service was incredible (without the service, I'd give the place 3 stars), I never once had to ask for a water refill. They cleaned up so quickly after every dish. Would love to try other items again.
In today's restaurant market, there are many Japanese restaurants that are good and occasionally you find one that is fantastic. How does one determine that a Japanese restaurant is fantastic? First you start with the ambience, then you start with a selection of the menu, then you look at the presentation of each plate and dish and the creative reiteration of that dish. At Taisho which is located in the heart of the Valley in Sherman Oaks, is a wonderful restaurant with great creativity and presentation and ambience... And it hits all the marks of a truly wonderful Japanese restaurant. This restaurant is so good that even living in Orange County, what desires to go back into the valley, which is quite a jaunt. We occasionally go to the valley for family and friends and events... And from now on, we will be stopping by this wonderful Japanese restaurant. Daniel the manager, our host and the rest of the team were AMAZING they make you feel welcome. This place was damn cute, small but really cute. If you want to have a fun date night out this is the place. Food was really great also. You should try their crispy chicken - i really like this one - so crispy and juicy - paired with spicy mayo Try their sweet and spicy crab rolls - so good too great amount the balance between sweet and spicy is great. Would definitely come back and have a great meal in this place again. read more
I visited Taisho with a friend and first off... parking was difficult (!) if valet is avoided. There are spots nearby in the residential area, but you'll need to walk a long block away for free parking in the evenings. All of the staff members were pleasant to interact with, and the interior decor was nice to experience. My favorite part was the angled mirrors; even for those sitting facing the wall, seeing behind was easy - no sneaking up! It also gave the illusion that the space was bigger. Lighting was on the dimmer end, giving a more intimate experience with food. We started off with Little Gems, a salad with yuzu and ginger dressing that was impressive. It reminded me of a tangy salad, but it was much more interesting with yuzu. We later moved onto the Yellowtail Serrano - yum! That serrano definitely left a kick! Their Miso Eggplant was up next - also tasty, though the thick sauce was a tad too sweet, almost like a syrup. We next had a spicy tuna crispy rice; the crispy rice was had a thick, sweet fried layer, and the rice was also fairly sticky. I think this was a good take on a new creation, but it wasn't for me. The sushi was just okay. Flipping through Yelp pictures, Lobster Noodles caught my eye; we ordered that, and it was tasty. The lobster tail had no meat, but rather it was cut and mixed into the noodles. The tail also had little meat and was a tad bitter.:/ Though we were stuffed, we tried their butter cake for dessert. The vanilla ice cream was tasty, and that butter cake was... definitely heavy! I've never tried this before, and it reminded me of pound cake. Worth the try? Mayhaps... read more

Came to Taisho on a whim. There's really only street parking so make sure to leave time to find a spot. The inside was VERY lively and it was a little difficult to hear. Prices were quite high for what you get, but food was overall solid. Highlights: Crispy Brussel Sprouts (5/5) - LOVE how light, salty and crispy this appetizer was. It's basically brussel sprout chips or kale chips. 100% recommend. Spicy Kurobuta Fried Rice (4/5) - great dish, the pork belly was soft and the rice was tasty. Overall it was a little heavy with the thick sauce, i wish there was more spice or crisp veggies in the rice Butter Cake (4/5) - YUMMM so rich and a great way to end the meal. It was also quite heavy and i wish there was more fruit. Overall Taisho was a great japanese spot, however the price takes it down to 4 stars. Easily was $50-60 per person read more

Came here for a date night on a Monday evening - it wasn't too crowded and there is both indoor and outdoor seating. We opted to sit "outside" in the back where it was cutely decorated with greenery and had a cozy vibe. We ordered edamame and crispy brussels sprouts for appetizers. The brussels sprouts definitely stole the show! I love the individual crisp layers! We also got the spicy tuna crispy rice. I've had better. The crispy rice wasn't my favorite part... it had a stale hash brown kind of texture. I would've appreciated a crisper outside and softer inside. For our main entrees, we got the salmon truffle roll (not very memorable to me), lobster roll (loved the miso hollandaise on this), and yuzu kosho roll (favorite of the night) when we realized we still weren't full. Service was good minus the extensively long wait we had for the yuzu kosho roll. We actually had to check on it and turns out it was either just sitting in the kitchen or delivered to the wrong table. However, our waitress felt so bad that she comped that roll for us and gifted us the butter cake which was honestly the sweetest (literally) and most incredible dessert I've had at a Japanese restaurant!!! It was SO good and such a perfect way to end the dinner. The warm cake was so fluffy and moist and buttery and with ice cream and strawberries, it made for the perfect bite. I've been a long time customer of Taisho but I had to finally come leave a review after our last visit. I went on a Friday night to enjoy the dine LA menu. The food was wonderful as per usual. Love the short ribs which we added on separately. The food was so good I didn't get many pictures. The popcorn tempura shrimp can't be beat. The robata yaki seabass and beef were also delicious!! The dine LA menu is one of the best values of the whole list. We also love their cocktails. The yuzu margarita and lychee martini will never fail to put a smile on my face. I had to come leave this review because of the wonderful service we got from David. I hope I got his name right. David was super accommodating, answered all my questions, and kept the drinks and food flowing perfectly. While parking is valet or street parking (the only downside), you are almost always guaranteed a celebrity spotting here. I fangirled oven Leon Thomas eating dinner near us. The music is also ALWAYSSSSS amazing. I'll continue to be a loyal customer! read more
Came for DineLA. We were stuffed and didn't need to order more! Be aware DineLA is sharing and 2-person min. Since the dishes are sized for 2, you may get a lot extra if you party is odd number. It's a small plates Japanese place. Food is delicious and misleadingly filling! We liked the crispy brussel sprouts even though it's just leaves no stem. The sashimi were flavorful with yuzu or truffle oil salt as indicated. The yaki looked small but with how rich the meat was we were satisfied. WOW - this place did not disappoint!!! AMBIENCE/SERVICE: Though we were initially disappointed because we came around 6pm on a weeknight expecting a happy hour menu (a friend had told us they had been for happy hour before when dining at a table) and they said they only had happy hour at the bar, it was still a really great experience. We were seated in the outdoor(ish) patio area which was BEAUTIFUL. The service was good, and I believe it was the manager or owner who really made sure we had an excellent experience. FOOD: Firstly, the presentation here is wonderful - each dish was beautiful, so if you're into the aesthetics of food (like me) it's perfect. I don't have a photo of the Dried Brussel Sprouts, but this is a MUST (so delicious!) We also got the meat skewer, a sushi roll, and cocktails which were all up to par. Now the fish was outstanding - & again... BEAUTIFULLY PLATED. The Salmon Dry Miso carpaccio and surprise raw fish dish we got (with the blue flower) did not disappoint. Overall, the food and presentation was 10/10. I'd also want to come back to try some of the other cocktails since they all sounded good and unique. Would highly recommend this place! But if you're looking for a good happy hour spot to drink AND eat, I'd call beforehand to see if it's just at the bar or not. :) read more
I've been wanting to come here and got to have their dine la dinner menu. Their ambiance was exactly what I was expecting-lively, good music, vibes and busy. I was expecting more from their food but there were a few misses including the Brussel sprouts appetizer and spicy tuna crispy rice. The brussel sprouts were not even there just the fries pieces and no actual sprouts. I don't know if that's how it usually is but if it is then I won't get it again for sure! The crispy rice was good but it was a little dry and I've just had better. I really enjoyed their spicy crab roll and the Bundt case dessert. The service was friendly. If you're looking for a vibey spot and have decent sushi then this is your spot. But if you're looking for just the quality of food and worth your money then there are other spots you can go to. read more
The best spot for a girls dinner date! We both had this spot saved in our bookmarks for the longest time and finally had a chance to try it and it did not disappoint! We came hungry and might have ordered with our stomachs but no regrets. Our server was a lovely lady whose name I forgot, I want to say it started with a G(?!), was so sweet and attentive. I have wanted to try this place for a while and finally did. This place is definitely a gem and i will return back. I am happy I tried many good options on the menu. We tried the crispy chicken, salmon nigiri, spicy albacore roll, yakatori chicken, and grilled avocado :) All of my food was very delicious no issues with the taste or size of our food portions it was delightful! The lychee martini was really good too I highly recommend they have really good cocktail options too!! The service was exceptional!! We had the pleasure of having Anthony as our server and he was incredible. Let us know what was good and he was correct with all his options. The sweetest and attentive waiter I had in a while!! Ask for him if you can no regrets!! The ambiance was very nice and cute! Good for a date night and many occasions. Nice bar area too!! They have valet, which is good!
