    Master Ha's Marinated Crab
    Gordon L.

I had been craving raw marinated crab for ages. Literally my first meal after landing in LA. My friend and I made the mistake of ordering the premium for 2 people, as well as uni. The bill was quite high. I think for 2 people who love seafood, the medium with uni add on would've been perfect. The restaurant does smell a bit like seafood, so if you have friends that don't like seafood, best not bring them.

I've been eyeing this place for a while and finally got a chance to try it with some friends. I've been to most of the gejang spots in KTown, so I was pretty hyped to check this one out. They specialize in gejang (marinated raw crab). We went with the Premium set which is around $199. It comes with 4 whole Korean female crabs loaded with roe. They cut everything up so it's easy to share, and it also includes 4 marinated raw shrimp and 4 marinated hard boiled eggs. You also get complimentary crab miso soup and banchan. We added a premium sea urchin as well which was about $75. It's basically two whole uni split into four portions with ikura, tobiko, and rice. The uni was super fresh and tasted really clean. The crab here is really good. Honestly might be my favorite gejang spot in KTown right now. The shrimp was also really solid. I actually really liked the crab miso soup too. They say it's unlimited, but when I asked for another round it never came. Overall this place was bussin. It's definitely one of the more expensive spots in KTown for gejang, but the quality is there. They were also on the Michelin Guide in 2019, which makes sense after trying it. I'd definitely come back again.

During our recent trip to Korea, my wife indulged too much and was unable to eat gangjang gejang---one of her favorite foods to eat. She requested to eat raw crab for her birthday, and trusty Yelp came to the rescue. Master Ha was rated very highly on the Yelp platform, but was it because of promotional offers (I.e leave us a five star review and get a free something) or was it just that good? It was time to find out. We entered the establishment and were greeted by two friendly workers. One of them seated us; the other explained the menu. The interior was very clean with kpop music. My wife was very happy with how often BTS' music played. We opted for the premium raw crab which included female crabs (roe) and raw shrimp; uni bowl; sullungtang; wagyu handroll; and uni handroll. The person explaining the menu even offered extra noodles with the beef soup since he noticed we had two kids. Within about fifteen minutes, banchan came flying out of the kitchen. This included marinated perilla leaf, kimchi, radish kimchi, spicy marinated crab, and egg. The handrolls arrived shortly after, and we were advised to eat those right away before the nori got soggy. I ordered the wagyu handroll which had pieces of ikura to balance the savory wagyu but sorta accidentally ended up stealing my wife's uni handroll because it was too buttery, creamy, and delicious. The uni bowl was served with sliced raw shrimp, an abundance of uni, and soy sauce egg. Instead of regular white rice, there was fried rice served with quail egg. Combined with nori, this dish was stellar although white rice would have been fine as well. The star of the show was definitely the raw crab--perfectly brined in soy sauce complimenting the subtly sweet raw crab bursting with roe. It brought me straight back to Korea and my wife even mentioned that it was possibly better than Korea. Master Ha is the final destination for Ganjang gejang in Los Angeles. There is just no use looking anywhere else.

Finally got to try the raw marinated crabs here. They were delicious!! Tried the spicy marinated one and it was so flavorful. Pairs great with rice and seaweed. It does get messy but they provide gloves for you! Quality of the crabs were good - super fresh. Also tried the Galbi and it was well marinated and tender. Everything was really good. And portions are good too! Service was great and friendly. They are a Michelin Guide restaurant.

I was told that winter is the prime time to eat raw Korean marinated crab for the best quality and flavor, so I flew down from San Francisco specifically to visit Master Ha--and they did not disappoint! The "Premium" Experience We went all out and ordered the premium set, and it was absolutely glorious. A collective "oooooooh" went around the table when the large dish of marinated crab arrived. It was stunning--adorned with edible flowers, ikura, and gold leaf. The crab halves were bursting with savory lipids and roe. The set also included: Two savory, addictive "drug eggs" (soy-marinated eggs). Four marinated raw shrimp. Four crab shells packed with creamy crab mustard (tomalley). How to Eat It They provide gloves so you can really get your hands dirty. You pick up the crab, squeeze the gelatinous, translucent marinated meat onto your rice, scoop it onto a sheet of seaweed with a spoonful of crab mustard, and stuff it into your mouth in one bite. The flavors were amazing--the crab sang with the sweetness of the ocean, paired with a perfect, savory marinade that wasn't overly salty. I had to work hard to portion my rice just right so I wouldn't fill up before finishing the crab! Banchan & Extras The meal was served with excellent banchan: cabbage kimchi, perilla leaf kimchi, radish kimchi, spicy raw crab, and a fantastic crab miso soup (I had to order a second one, which was complementary!). The toppings--crispy seaweed, sesame oil, and furikake--were perfect for making DIY handrolls. Live Uni We also had the live uni, served in huge shell halves filled with rice, luscious sweet uni, ikura, tobiko, caviar, a quail egg, and gold leaves. It was incredibly creamy, rich, and delicious. Final Verdict If you want an amazing Korean raw marinated crab experience, come to Master Ha. It is worth the trip!

Wow! This will be my go to place for when I am craving marinated crab! Everything here is super delicious. The meat on the crabs are insanely huge! The flavoring, to the customer service and side dish options are spectacular! Definitely worth coming here. I wanna treat my family out when they are also, in town again! There is also parking for valet! And there is plenty enough seating indoors!

Fantastic meal and a must go if you love raw marinated crab! I came here with a friend on a weeknight and we ended up having to wait 30-40 minutes, but service was as efficient as possible getting us in and we ordered while outside to minimize time wasted inside. Interior felt clean and modern - it was a well-lit space and felt a little cozy. The food itself was high quality - huge crabs and tasty uni as well as a nice soup. We got the uni mainly due to its appearance as it looked amazing in shell - the price though is likely not worth it. This spot is incredibly pricy so I would recommend only coming here if you're comfortable with paying exorbitant prices. Overall, the meal was nice and I'm glad I stopped by. Due to its price, I can't guarantee I'd come back soon, but I highly recommend it for those looking for a nice meal!

Exquisite seafood meal at Master Ha. The marinated crab and sea urchin were rich, very fresh and delectable. Everything tasted clean without any fishiness whatsoever. We arrived early and were seated immediately. Our order was prepared quickly. In and out in under an hour. Nice clean restaurant. Only thing is that food is pricey and there is no alcohol service here. Thats why this is a 4 star review.

Was there around 9:18 pm. I asked if I can still dine in and the response was yes with attitude to be honest. Once I received the menu, he said 9:30 is our last call so I ordered quick and ate fast. Food was great especially soy marinated crab was not too salty. Though I dined alone, I spent almost $100 plus tip so I took one star out because of the service. That's it.

Finally had my marinated crab at ktown! It's a little pricy about $70-80 pp, but I'd definitely visit again! 10/10 marinated crab, live uni and steamed egg. Ordered the regular marinated crab. The premium option gives you all female crabs, but honestly we were very happy with the regular already, since they are soooo delicious. It sounds scary, raw crab? But don't be scared! First of all, they are super fresh! No weird fishy smell at all. The sweet and umami sauce actually goes so well with the rice too. And they give you complimentary hearty miso soup. And because they are so well marinated, it's so easy to eat. You just have a bite and sip the meat out of the shell like drinking a boba! And huh, the long lasting rich fermentation from the soy sauce, the meaty satisfaction from the crab meat, and the sweetness and umami flavor from the ocean, they just make you so happy! The price tag of the uni bowl is a little intimidating, but it is insanely pretty. First time having food with edible gold on top too haha. 100% delicious, but less impressive than the marinated crab, so if you don't want to break the bank, it's okay to skip this. Also, Master Ha has really attentive service. The waiter explained patiently to us the differences between different crab and uni options (which is a little confusing on their menu) and even pointed to us where we can get free parking. And yes, for a restaurant in ktown, this place is not that hard to find parking (but we did come on a Thursday). Street parking is free at night, and at the other side of the street, parking is free without the need of a permit too. Also, weeekday is so chill! So didn't have to wait on a Thursday too It's a very rewarding adventure. Hoping to return again!

Food Delicious! My family and I got the premium marinated crab, premium uni bowl combo, and bbq short rib specialty. All ingredients were fresh and flavorful, but my favorites were of course the crab and the uni. Both seafood dishes came with rice, sides, and ingredients to make mini wraps. The rice for the crab was white rice while the rice for the uni was more of a flavorful rice with seeds, sesame oil, quail egg, and some veggies. I recommend coming here with a few friends in order to try more foods and share the big portions. Service The employees were very nice and accommodating. It was our first time and they took their time to explain the menu to us. They continuously checked up on us and were so friendly. Ambience We arrived around 12PM on a Saturday. There were a good number of customers but still open tables left. The restaurants itself is very clean and modern. There's also a hand washing station for those who only need wash and not use the restroom. The parking lot is quite small but there is street parking nearby!

Came here for the soy raw marinated crabs and abalone, and they absolutely lived up to the hype. So fresh, flavorful, and definitely the highlight of the meal--worth coming back for alone. The dishes were also beautifully plated, which made the experience even better. We also ordered the Wagyu beef bowl, which was just okay for us. The beef was a bit chewy for our liking. On the other hand, the banchan were delicious and well-executed. We tried the Galbitang as well, but it was a little too over the top for our preference. We tend to enjoy a more simple, classic Galbitang with just the bones. That said, the kids enjoyed it, so it still worked out. Service was excellent--staff were super friendly and kind. The ambiance is simple, minimalistic, and very clean, which we appreciated. Parking can be a bit of a pain. If you're lucky, there's paid parking in the complex; otherwise, street parking is your best bet. We went right before 5pm on a Saturday and snagged one available stall in the complex for $5. Overall, I would definitely come back. The soy raw marinated crabs alone make this place worth the visit and totally live up to the hype.

    7. Spicy crab (large) $149.99

This is the place to get soy marinated raw crab. Hands down. The presentation and taste were excellent. Be prepared to let your wallet loose. I was here with a large party. They do not take reservations, so they recommended us to arrive early like 5:30 PM to avoid a long wait time. They were right because we got seated right away. By the time we left, there were at least four parties waiting. They give you an ordering form, so you mark how many and what you want. For 12 people, we split the following: 1 premium marinated crab $199.99 2 large spicy crab $149.99x2 1 premium live uni $64.99 1 sullungtang $19.99 2 galbi tang $24.99x2 The regular crab was better than the spicy. I wouldn't get spicy crab next time. The uni was so so good. The soups we got were also really tasty. Our servers didn't give us gloves, so we had to ask for them. I feel like they were not showing that Korean respect for elders iykyk. It's a familiar thing I see in restaurants in ktown. No WiFi Two gender-neutral bathrooms in the back of the restaurant Apple Pay/credit card accepted (pay at the register)

There is a combo order of both, but it includes the American marinated crab and an extra small live uni. With their recommendation, we opted for the Korean marinated crab and small uni to share with 2 adults and one kid. When the food came out, they gave us another live uni on the house and I was so happy because I didn't want to share mine! The food was so homey and delicious. The seafood pajeon was so loaded with all the seafood bits and the soy bean soup was the perfect palette cleanser. Service was great and they were so helpful to answer any questions we had. They gave us extra water for our little one and refilled our tea when it was a fourth full. They were so tentative and asked how we liked the food. We loved it. We also enjoyed the banchan!

The marinated crab was very delicious, and spicy crab was even better, but the marinated crab is definitely higher quality, so if you want to get the best of both worlds order both or get the combo. When we finished ordering, appetizers came immediately and basically covered the whole table, and as a Korean restaurant with such warm hospitality I assume you can get more side dishes if you want, but we didn't want to waste any food. All dishes tasted great. The uni wasn't very surprising but it's still good, so if you are doing à la carte you can skip it. All in all a 5+ for the restaurant, also the restroom seems pretty clean so it's another plus for this smallish restaurant.

We scrutinize the food and more importantly, the consistency of the food over a long period, the service, vibe, all the rest. My husband and I have eaten here many times over the last year, and I am only now writing about this amazing place because, well, I normally can't bother to, even for our most favorite of places. 1) The food here, the crab, abalone, shrimp, whatever they put on the table, is consistently the freshest and cleanest you will find anywhere in LA, let alone amongst its competitor restaurants. 2) Best of its kind: in my opinion, this may just be the best version of the korean-style marinated seafood you will find in all of US. 2a) The soy marinaded crab is the perfect balance of savory, sweet and umami. It is not salty or overpowered by one flavor component like some versions can be. This will not fatigue your palate. 2b) The red pepper marinade crab is also superb, in that the marinade is just the perfect amount of spiciness and sweetness while maintaining a lingering note of freshness. This is my husband's first choice. 2c) Abalone bibimbap is, then, just the perfect cherry on top. So much umami and ocean goodness without it being overpowering or causing palate fatigue. So satisfying. 2d) The a-la-carte Seaweed soup with abalone is the ultimate iteration of its kind. Complex, umami, and comforting. 2e) The rice here is my favorite - the ideal version of its kind. You could feel the texture of each grain in the perfect in-between state of cooked and al dente. That level of accentuation of each rice grain is now a requirement for me to enjoy any Korean soy marinade crab and the seaweed soup. I know that not many places can fulfill this level or rice perfection and that I have been spoiled by Gaebang sikdang. Oh, lastly, try the pairing of food with Sang Maggoli drink. It's chef's kiss. 3) I know some people are irked by the price point, but I personally think it is a very reasonable price to pay considering the fact they import only the female crabs of the season from Korea to maintain the quality and consistency. 4) The food quality and flavor profiles here are meticulously consistent, again and again. Consistency is a very hard mandate to fulfill for the majority of restaurants, even for the starred ones. In my opinion, Gaebang Sikdang passes the test of consistency. 5) Service is attentive and friendly. It has a hint of Michelin fine dining vibe. This is a solid place on our list.

We visited the restaurant on Friday (3/27), and I wanted to check if anyone else experienced stomach issues after dining here? I personally did not eat the raw crab--I had the salmon and the other cooked dishes--but both I and another friend still had mild stomach discomfort afterward. Unfortunately, one friend who did eat the raw crab had a much more serious reaction. She experienced diarrhea that lasted until almost 2 AM and still wasn't feeling well the next day. She has eaten raw crab before in Korea without any issues, so this was concerning. This might be something the restaurant--or even the health department--should look into. Aside from that, the overall experience was just okay. The drinks selection is very limited and they don't have any dessert on the menu. We tried to order abalone, but it was out of stock. More concerning, it was still listed on our bill, and we had to ask them to remove it. At this point, I don't think we'll be returning.
