My years-ago Legal Sea Foods visit was disappointing (can't recall all the particulars of my long-disappeared ePinions review). And Neptune was great but I might not be back until I sell a million copies of my coffee table book featuring photos of classic abandoned Circuit City locations. So the shack has moved up in my Boston Power Rankings, even as I fear that bluefish isn't just seasonally gone but forever vanished. The waiter was incredibly in helpful in the oyster recommendations. I'm not like Miles from Sideways, "ah yes, there's just a faint hint of brackishness in the seawater, with just slight overtones of menhaden and sardines overlayed with the faint aroma of cilantro and carrots." Wellfleets which I've heard of were recommended along with new-to-me Duxburys. Wellfleets had a classic oysterian vibe but the Duxburys had a more OMFG blast of oceanity. If there's a brininess scale like the hot-pepper scale this has a high rating. The mignonette and cocktail sauces were great. Shockingly, as of press time oysters are $2 each. In a fierce entree selection battle, haddock lost out to swordfish because of shrimp butter. I don't know what else is in there beyond shrimp and butter but it's a must-have. I also enjoyed the German potato salad, and the sleeper hit was broccoli rabe. It had the garlic hit usually found in the dish but had a fresher, more gentle touch than the typical formulation. read more

Stayed at the Sheraton Boston for a convention. We noticed Summer Shack as we uber'd in... unfortunately, we did not come until our last night - definitely a regret. The happy hour is quite extensive and only at the bar, which was perfect cause we wanted to watch the Sunday night game. The bartender, I did not get his name, was friendly, patient, and gave excellent suggestions. The oysters are excellent and only $2 each - quite a bit to choose from, but I found all had excellent taste to them. The mussels dish and the clams were excellent as well, though I loved the clams so much I had to get another order. Our friend went on a clam chowder binge throughout our stay in Boston and concluded that out of the seven or so that he tried, Summer Shack's chowder was the best. We stopped by recently for a quick snack on our walk back to the nearby parking garage. We sat at the bar and ordered Buffalo shrimp, lobster potstickers, and lobster bisque. The lobster bisque was mediocre , especially for Boston, and I do not recommend. The buffalo shrimp and lobster potstickers were both delicious! I met up with a friend who was staying at the Sheraton down the street. He mentioned being up for seafood. Most of the places that came up in the list were a bit too high-priced for our blood, but this little place was down the street from his hotel. A little disappointed in this experience. Made reservations online, asked for a booth. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were given a half booth. Not the biggest deal but okay.. Our waiter didn't come for a long time. When he finally came, he didn't greet us, just poured our water and said "any questions? ready to order?". I've never had a waiter barely speak. What's weird is the entire service was like this. I think he only said something longer when he brought the bill. What was off putting was he seemed to converse a little more with other parties? Now if the food was extraordinary Id put up with this weird service. But...again was disappointed. Clam chowder was pretty good. My crab cakes were okay, but were served lukewarm. Definitely not worth the $30 something dollars. Half the plate was empty, but filled with greens to make it look full... First time trying out this restaurant . Came for "Dine Out Boston " it was a $55 3 course pre fixed dinner . The lobster and Johnny cakes honestly just tasted like lobster salad on top of a corn pancakes but it was absolutely amazing . So filling and so much lobster meat . Pretty solid seafood. Came here the other week for clam chowder and a shrimp po' boy. The chowder was quite good as the clam broth was very tasty and there were amble chunks of clam throughout. The po' boy was also delicious, and was topped with a tangy sauce and served with a side of fresh potato chips! It's a bit overpriced but for the area it's in the prices are on the cheaper side. The service was good, but since it was pretty busy it took a while to get our drinks. I'd go back. It's not amazing but you get a solid meal for a decent downtown price. Awesome place that overcomes a difficult location for those of us living in the Fenway. Dine in Boston gave me the incentive to try this out. The package is a three course meal, so I was impressed with the amount of calamari in my appetizer. I ordered the lobster Cobb salad and there was a fair amount of lobster...given one can always have more lobster in any salad! My wife ordered the surf and turf which was tasty and plentiful. My wife is gluten intolerant, so they made a special adjustment to her dessert with a generous portion of an ice cream sundae that we shared. I had the key lime pie (I don't usually order dessert) and it was great. The filling was tart and the crust tasted very moist and fresh. The lighting was dark and the place had no outside patio (which was ironic given the name of the place). Was in town for a game and decided to try the Summer Shack based off previous Yelp reviews as well as the fact that the restaurant was outside the door of the hotel. We made reservations which we didn't need for this night, but I could see how this place could fill up quickly as it is small. I agree with previous reviews that the lighting is quite dark, which can make it challenging to read the menu. But all in all, the place is clean, the staff is friendly, and the areas are kept organized. For the food, I started off with a bowl of the clam chowder and then ordered the shrimp po' boy with a side of fries. I found the soup to be bland, watered down, and filled with more potatoes and less with clams. The soup was definitely the downside to the meal. The shrimp po' boy on the other hand was very tasty. The shrimp was deep fried to a nice crunch and topped with a sauce that gave each bite a nice little zing. The bread wasn't just a random bun or roll, but was more like a toasted folded piece of bread that allowed you to taste the contents rather than get a mouth full of bread with each bite. I didn't get a picture of the cornbread, but it was amazing with the molasses butter! I wasn't too hungry so I ordered the spaghetti and clams. We have been walking by this place for over a year, dropping our kit off at college. Today they had a $2 oyster sign outside. That caught our attention. I made sure to check reviews online so we didn't eat any place with bad oysters. Seeing a review about the shrimp Poboy, my husband got that, I got the crab avocado toast and we got oysters. Honestly, every dish was outstanding. My husband has a rule that he doesn't eat gumbo anywhere but New Orleans, so instead, he got the Poboy. I tried it and agree with him, it is up there in the top 3 ever. He hates peppers with a passion (the texture not taste) so he had the fried peppers on the side. I taste tested them to see if he should try one, he did, then proceeded to eat the entire cup of them. I was nervous to order the crab avocado toast because sometimes they come out dry and tasteless. I asked the server straight out, is it dry and tasteless? She said no they're really good. I trusted her and I'm really glad I did. The salsa on top changed my world about where I can use salsa... And my husband's world is changed regarding eating peppers.. The oysters were fresh, tasty, and $2.00. We ate many. This is going to sound fake, but don't care. After the last few days in Boston, seeing how low the bill was when the server brought it, I flung my arms out and said oh my God I can't believe it's under $60!!! I came to Summer Shack to review salmon as a project to find the best salmon in Boston. I also came for a quick lunch time snack. As expected it smelt like a seafood restaurant with a fishy smell although that did not limit my ability to eat. The food I ordered the Grilled Atlantic Salmon with fries lemon-maple glaze, citrus fennel apple slaw, asparagus & roasted potatoes. Presentation wise the salmon was very well thought out. Taste wise the salmon was very good and unique I really loved the citrus fennel apple slaw. As it gave an apple flavor to the dish which I had never thought could be on salmon or near it. Alongside the sides of fries and potatoes were a great balancing combination to the citric effect of the dish. The service was excellent and unique as they gave me a postcard to take with me but I did not get it. The waiter did not hesitate to serve my dish as I already knew what to get. The ambiance was very calming as there was fishing floating in the various aquariums and you could hear the busy work of the two kitchens working. Came by here while we were waiting for seats at a nearby restaurant on a Saturday night. We were able to get seated right away but our server took a little before he introduced himself. For drinks I had the passion fruit martini and my friend had the mojito. Both were refreshing and as expected. Since we were going to be eating soon, we shared a fish taco order which came with a side of house chips. The portions were huge compared to the typical 3 inch tortillas I'm used to. Each taco had at least 2 pieces of fried battered fish with an assortment of toppings including lettuce, guacamole, pico de Gallo, sour cream, corn. After squeezing the fresh lemon wedge over, the pieces of fish started to soften right away. A thicker more crispy batter would have made the overall mouthfeel more satisfying. I've been twice. I love their raw oysters and lobster mac and cheese. Cost of raw oysters are reasonable, $2 per when I went, and they don't skimp out on the lobster in the mac and cheese. The service overall is good, staff is friendly. I want to give a higher rating but when I last went we got charged $30 for...three extra small bowls of rice. We got an assortment of very fresh oysters which were all excellent. Ordered a haddock plate which included small cubed potatoes and some fresh green vegetables topped with a mushroom sauce. Also a clam chowder cup and a chickpea salad. Everything was tasty. I think they used a lot of butter or oil , which really does not sit well with me I paid the price for that later that evening. TL; DR: the show was great, the food tasted like prison cafeteria food. Came to this spot for a Halloween and 90s themed Drag Brunch. It was my first time here and the show was AWESOME, however, the restaurant...not so awesome. First: the brunch was a ticketed event, which is fine, but the bottom of the tickets stated that each guest much purchase an entree. It seems like kind of a rip off requirement especially when... 2: The food is T R A S H. My friend ordered the chicken and waffles, and her waffle was very obviously microwaved and her chicken crispy and oily. I got the All-You-Can Mary Breakfast, which included bland eggs that were subpar to even hotel breakfast eggs (you could tell they came from a carton and not cracked from real eggs), toast so dry and burnt you could crack a tooth on it, microwaved flavorless potatoes and bacon. Understandably, this is a seafood restaurant and not a spot that specializes in brunch, however, if you're going to require that your patrons purchase a brunch entree at $18 a pop, it would be nice to ensure the food doesn't taste like a kids cuisine. Additionally, we had to get the server's attention multiple times to order our $15 drinks and to pay. I had asked for syrup immediately after the food arrived and was told yes but never received it.
