We dropped by on a whim for dessert and were pleasantly surprised - Sugar Pine has very unique, Asian influenced ice cream flavors. The scoop sizes are generous, and the worker let us try out many flavors before we ordered. The ice creams are quite dense, almost the texture of gelato. I recommend coming here for dessert; it's very tasty for a reasonable price. Now I just have to come back sometime to try some of their lunch/dinner options. I've been waiting for this place to open, and I finally got to try it out today! This place was perfect! We got the chopped garlic steak, pork katsu, spicy tuna onigiri, and steak onigiri. And everything was sooooo amazing! The way the food was presented to us was beautiful!! I also got the honey lemonade, and it was amazing. Not too sweet but perfect. The lady working there was super nice! She gave us these pine nut cookies as service, and they were the best cookies I've ever tasted. Even my bf loved it! We loved it so much that I asked to buy the two they had left! I had to go all out and also get ice cream. The black sesame and green tea were on point! Overall, it was amazing. I like the interior and atmosphere of this place. The staff is nice. Bottles of wine are half off on Wednesdays. But the food was just okay. The spicy tuna was pretty terrible, pretty sure it was canned tuna wrapped in sushi rice, took one bite and . The set dish and udon soup was pretty good. I've come into this business several times since it opened for either caffeine or ice cream and it has been lovely each time. Today, however, I came in and tried to order and the barista had the worse attitude. They were rude and condescending the whole time. I paid with a business card by accident and I asked them to cancel it. They said they couldn't do it since I had already tapped. I asked them to please do it several times and they said they could offer a refund, but rolled their eyes at me though I would be paying with my personal card. I asked them if there was a problem because I was feeling a negative vibe since I came in. I felt very uncomfortable the whole time and honestly felt it was racially motivated with the way I was treated. I asked for their name and they refused to give it to me and said they were the supervisor and that I could call back if I wanted to make a complaint. I don't usually do this, but I felt awful with the way I was treated. I called and asked for a message to be given to the owner to get back to me, but I'm not sure that's going to get to them. All I wanted was a quick drink between client meetings and unfortunately that didn't happen. So disappointed. read more

Dropped by to visit Sugar Pine for the first time last week and I was very impressed. As I first walked through the door, I loved the aesthetic of the establishment. They had a beautiful selection of unique ice cream flavors and small Japanese appetizers. The very polite worker let me try a couple of flavors of ice cream even though I told her I stopped by for food. After placing my order, I quickly sat down and waited for my items to arrived. Being a big fan of cold/dipping noodles, I chose to order the soba with a couple of onigiris. I am a big fan of ume-shiso, definitely try that one if you get a chance to drop in. Between the very large, flavorful onigiri, the perfectly seasoned karaage chicken, and the light and crunchy tempura fish and chips, you really can't go wrong with anything on their menu. And then there's dessert... Their made-in-house ice cream is the best I've had in quite a while. They'll give you samples of anything you'd like to try, but my vote is for the watermelon Thai basil sorbet and the spiced chocolate. If you're full after your meal, trust me and get a few scoops to go. I stuck mine in the freezer... They really didn't stay there long though :) Anyway, the owners obviously love food, and take pride in what they do. It's evident in every fantastic bite. read more

This place is adorable, quaint, and instagram worthy. The food is absolutely amazing, hands down the best onigiri I've ever eaten. Their chicken karaage is lightly battered and perfectly fried, and the same goes for the fish and chip. All the meals came out BEAUTIFULLY presented. Their ice cream flavors are also very unique and delicious, my favorite is the taro and salted miso, and the owner himself is just so nice. I found this establishment on Yelp, like I do for most of the restaurants. I walked in and was greeted, right away! Love it when places do this! The food I ordered to eat there was the Cold Soba, Chicken Karaage and Iced Latte. I also purchased several cookies and Onigiri (Spicy Tuna, Salmon and Salted Plum (can't remember Japanese translation) to go. All were Oishi (Delicious)!! The girl greeted us with friendly offer of trying out their ice creams. But what we really came here for at 2pm on a Sunday is for the chicken karaage and katsu pork. Well guess what, Karaage were out.... Boo....they don't prepare enough supplies for selling on the weekend? So we ordered pork and chicken Katsu instead. The food tasted decent, but definitely not worth $13 and $14..... Be aware, I checked Yelp reviews, it's only 17 days ago, someone posted the menu and it was only $12 for the Katsu pork, wow, this place sure knows how to make profit out of it. This delightful new eatery totally hit the spot. All kinds of fresh and delicious Asian eats and service that can't be beat! The counter service immediately takes you in with beautiful colors of housemade ice cream with Asian flare--Taro Root, Miso Caramel, White Chocolate Thai Tea, Black Sesame, Watermelon Thai Basil, Macha Green Tea, etc. Hard to select a favorite--and the gourmet toppings included lime meringue dots, strawberry "chips", caramel popcorn, candied orange peel, sesame granola, etc. But we had to order substantive food first and then go back for the sweet treats for round 2! We were in a large group of varied eaters, so we were able to sample many of the immaculately prepared dishes. Fish and Chips and Tempura Kabocha were perfectly crispy and not oily tempura renderings--so good! The Spicy Tuna Onigiri was moist and delicious--and definitely spicy! Fresh and beautifully prepared. Speaking of beautifully prepared, the Grilled Salmon was absolutely gorgeous--every little small plate of fresh color and flavor--salmon and veggies, salad, pickled veggies, miso soup, perfect rice, and a small sugar cookie topped with pine nuts ("sugar pine", I suppose). A beautiful balanced and filling meal that makes me want to return to have it again and again! The Chicken Karaage was also perfectly fried and a definitely crowd pleaser. From the honey lemonade to the high quality coffee and beer selection, and the mead (my favorite!), there is definitely a lot to please every age and crowd. I could see this being a fantastic place to grab a quick bite as a regular, as well as a place to just want to hang out or come by for ice cream as an afternoon or end of evening treat. The decor is so bright and warm and pleasing. All of the wood grains throughout and bright yellows and blues in the furniture and wallpaper are cheerful. A more lounge-y section of the restaurant presents with couch seating and coffee table feel. There is even a lovely outdoor seating space next to a fountain with some patio tables. Lots of different spaces to call to individuals, couples, families, and groups. And, yes, then there's the ice cream. And it is definitely ALL THAT! Even though you may have had your fill with the onigiri and delicious plates of fresh high quality and reasonably priced Asian delights...you must go back for ice cream! You won't regret it! The ice cream flavors are very unique here with 2 sorbet flavors as well! We got the Thai tea and matcha flavors which didn't necessarily compliment each other, but they didn't clash either. I had a yaki soba craving and found this place. However, when I saw there was yaki udon, I quickly ordered that because I love udon noodles. THIS WAS NOT YAKI UDON! It didn't look anything like yaki udon (or even the pictures on their website). Fettuccine noodles were used instead of udon noodles (you could clearly tell they were fettuccine noodles; a restaurant should not substitute egg noodles for wheat noodles without telling customers) and the sauce was not yaki sauce at all. It was very sweet and was so watery and didn't stick to the noodles at all. The chicken was fine, it was tender, but there was a lot of other vegetables that are not normal in yaki soba/yaki udon. It was quite expensive for food that was mediocre. We saw other people's soba noodles, so maybe yakisoba would have at least had the right noodles but the sauce would still be bad. The onigiri looked good (that other people ordered), but we didn't order it because it was more expensive and smaller than other onigiri places that we have been. I was originally excited to try the ice cream, but given our experiences with the meal, we didn't want to risk the expensive ice cream, and went somewhere else. read more

Hot Take: Onigiri is the poor man's sushi. All the wonderful flavors of sushi and wonderfully filling without the steep price tag. I've been trying to get my husband on the onigiri loving train for a while now, but the problem is that we don't really have great onigiri at restaurants where I'm from, and I haven't had great success making it at home. However, we stopped in here for a late night stack, and they were kind enough to accommodate us even though we came in 30 minutes prior to closing. The inside was really cozy and cute, and the service was friendly. We got two onigiri (salmon and spicy tuna) and the pork katsu platter and ate it all! The onigiri was perfectly seasoned, and finally convinced my husband how great onigiri can really be when made well. The katsu was also nicely crisped, and I liked the pickles served with it. We really wanted to come back here during our road trip, but alas the timing didn't work out. However, should I ever be in Austin again I wouldn't hesitate to come here and would definitely recommend to others. read more

Bland flavorless food with very little salt. I have Japanese cousins too. The white guy-owner was very rude and could care less despite spending $29 for a single person lunch. Then as soon as white customers came in he was friendly to them and polite etc. Just get the ice cream cone and get out--most people did. The spicy edamame--lacking salt (I eat low salt). The udon was too salty and the nagiri had old salmon in it--disgusting fishy taste! The squash in it was good but it was so hot--all the vegetables got cooked to death. I went a few times and each visit has been just okay. It's a good place to take someone not familiar with onigiri, as the presentation is good and so is the flavor. I do think they're quite pricey however. We tried a few of their ice cream, which is also a bit pricey but you won't find those flavors at any nearby ice cream shop. I would pass on the black sesame ice cream. It had a gummy texture (too much xanthan gum?) yet also grainy and taste wasn't that great. I've had good interactions with the staff there. read more

We had the onigiri and soba, they even split the soba for us. The pickles are also good. The ice cream has a very light, whipped texture, and the flavors are unique. A lot of thought has obviously been put into the interior and it's very cute, they also did their best to make a nice outside seating area, which is a challenge next to the frontage road. Friggin delicious. The counter server said it has a kick, that was a lie. More like a judo throw because I was not prepared for the taste. I was not hungry enough for a full meal but again I was recommended the chicken Karrage, now they're gonna have to carry me out the door. It was devoured. I kind of wish the sauce had something more zesty like a Japanese bbq or something but the yuzu sauce was pretty good too. Honestly I avoid specialty drinks but they have ice cream and everything so I ended up going for the Matcha Limeade and was not disappointed. This place is a pretty good bang for your buck too. I got a big ol piece of onigiri and a hefty bowl of chicken with a fun drink for around 16$. A lot of appetizers and food for not much compared to quantity and quality.
