Half of a super Italiano
James H.

I've always heard good things about Submarine Center. Finally, got a chance to try it out tonight. When I saw the super on the menu. I thought it was be a huge size. For $17.xx, definitely not worth the price. They only have French bread. Take out only. No seating available.

S10. The Atomic (Super) everything on it!

It's been years since we've eaten a submarine center sandwich! But it was memorable enough to try them again on a rainy, Friday afternoon. It was quiet and only a few others waiting for their sandwich, so we were first in line. Just too bad they no longer have tables and chairs. So we had to take them to go. ***OUR PICKS*** THE ATOMIC ~ hot pastrami, turkey, cheese, corned beef, jalapeños, mustard, mayo, onions. Lettuce, tomatoes, & special sauce. My guy tried this and actually liked the hot pastrami by itself instead. I think I tasted the turkey more than the hot pastrami or corned beef. I liked my sandwich better too. But if you're a turkey fan, then maybe this sandwich is for you! 4/5 HOT PASTRAMI ~ I had this and enjoyed it! I think the special sauce (possibly Italian salad dressing) makes the sandwich taste better. The tartness lessens the saltiness from the meat and makes it pleasant to eat! 4/5 There's no choice but one type of bread, French bread. Now, they toast this bread perfectly that it's crispy on the outside, yet chewy on the inside! That made their sandwiches memorable for us and it's still the same after all these years! I would like a place to eat the sandwich though. Obviously, a freshly made sandwich tastes better than one that's been sitting for 15 minutes, especially toasted and sauced up! We found a near by bench and ate it a few minutes after it was made. Here's to hoping one day they'll have seats again.

The Atomic. Size "super." $20 and excellent value, considering it is massive. Get this!
John N.

Tried their signature "Atomic" super sub, and it didn't disappoint. The sandwich itself is huge and well-stuffed, literally the size of your forearm. I felt that the size alone justifies the ~$20 price tag, since you can really get two meals out of it. The ratios are all correct, but the standout is definitely the pastrami, which they prepare in-house. I am not normally a pastrami fan, but I think it works exceedingly well with the other elements in this sandwich (turkey, cheese, corned beef). The bread was fresh, and the service was quick. What more could you ask for? I'll definitely return to get my sandwich fix!

Amazing sandwich! Well well well, Finally I had the privilege to try this place today after living in the city for almost 9 years. They only make their sandwiches with one kind of bread, the good French roll chewy kind of bread. Simple not complicated. I've had the super hot pastrami with everything. The only less than perfect thing for me is the Super sandwich is comparable to regular size sandwich at many other sandwich shops in the city. They offer three size: Mini, Center, Super. Service was friendly and efficient, I can tell this is one of a neighborhood favorite. Ambiance was clean, simple, bright corner shop and right next to the West Portal Station. I love West Portal neighborhood and now even more after I tasted a sandwich from Submarine Center.

One of the tastiest sandwich places I've ever tried! Service was amazing and quick but there was no line. They had a ton of cool, vintage decorations inside. No seating available, more of a pick up spot.

I look forward to going back and trying more of their HUGE and tasty sandwiches. The service is fast and friendly and the prices are very reasonable, especially considering the size of the sandwiches. My goal is to try everything from the menu!

Hot Pastrami: tender brisket that was falling from the side of the sandwich , half of the fillings was meat so they do not skimp out. It was also not salty. there are 3 sizes for the sandwiches: Mini, Center, Super. There are 2 lines: 1 for ordering on the left of the store and 1 for pickup on the right Chips and drinks are available with limited selection. Order came out within 5-10 minutes. Sports memorabilia hung on the wall from the championship eras give its character. Parking can be tricky in the area as it is high traffic.

Anna C.

Ordered the large pastrami sandwich and the Italian to go! Delicious like I remembered it. Decent amount of meat vs veggies vs sauce. Bread was perfectly toasted. A bit pricey but hey everything is expensive these days. Picked up the sandwich on a Wednesday around 11:30 am, no line, quick pay and go.

Pastrami just how it comes on the menu
Larry P.

Was in SF and realized I was close to Submarine Center. I've heard people put their sandwiches in the top 10 in the city, so I had to check it out for myself. I ordered the pastrami exactly how it comes on the menu, and it blew me away--absolute 10/10. Super hot, melty, and full of flavor. If you're anywhere near the area, don't sleep on this spot. Highly recommend!

I was craving a pastrami and found this place was within biking distance so I went out and ordered ahead on doordash for pick up. It was ready by the time I got there. The pastrami sandwich was good and juicy though it's not a traditional pastrami I had in mind, I'd still come back for this. But is a sandwich really $17 these days?

Anna W.

Sandwiches are always a hit never a miss here. I usually get the super roast beef sub or the atomic with jalapeños, pastrami, turkey, corned beef, cheese. Pastrami is my family's fav. The bread is a toasted roll light and crispy and served with Italian dressing. I would never get anything smaller than a super! This place is family owned and they are always friendly fast and consistent. They don't need my endorsement. They are legendary. The shop is small but mighty. They used to have a really good split pea soup. I know not everyone's jam it was mine. Sad they don't serve it anymore. I've been coming here since I was in high school!! Do yourself a favor and order a sandwich from Sub Center. I'm telling you as a friend. You will be taking a bite into your future. Outlook is good!!!

We came for lunch on a Monday and ordered the Caesar salad, calamari, two pastas and the burrata salad, and every single dish was excellent. The pastas in particular were incredible, but even the appetizers and salads were thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. It was one of those meals where everything just worked, and there wasn't a single dish that I wouldn't happily order again. The restaurant itself is also really cute, with a warm and lively atmosphere and charming interior decor. They have outdoor seating as well, which is a nice option when the weather is good. Dinner can get especially busy on Friday nights and weekends, but the energy is part of what makes this place fun. They stay open until midnight, so later in the evening it really starts to feel like a bit of a scene. I would highly recommend Bottega for both lunch and dinner. Overall, a nice spot for a birthday dinner in the city.

The highlight was the garlic shrimp appetizer and the entrees. The seafood risotto tastes very fresh and delicious but I wish that the rice was a bit harder- it felt like i didn't need to chew much to swallow which wasn't something I like. The butter squash ravioli was interesting. The ravioli felt like a dessert with fried sage, brown sugar and cinnamon crumbles on top. We both were disappointed with the desserts which was surprisingly given some of the best dishes I got from Italian restaurants were the desserts. I enjoyed the pork milanese, served with beans in a salty pan sauce. The apps were a bit disappointing though. It was a bit too salty and felt like a glorified cheese pizza. The crust was okay, but I don't think it's authentic. 4/5 Fettuccine Pesto was flavorful. It was a bit too oily, but the pesto comes through. They put mixed veggies in for the vegetarian option, even though I suggested cherry/sun-dried tomatoes and zucchini alone would be good. It was not bad with the broccoli and carrots as well. 3.5/5 Cheese Ravioli had a nice, slightly al dente pasta. The tomato sauce felt a bit burnt to my liking, and I wondered if it was overcooked. 4.5/5 Creme Brulee was great, with the right amount of sweetness. The custard was a bit harder than usual, but that's a minor detail. It was a really fun time, and they took good care of us! We shared the Summer Salad as well, which had really great bright tomatoes. For entrees, I had the Rabbit Saddle in Porchetta, and we split a Margherita DOP pizza. My Rabbit Saddle came with a side of their butter beans, which were tender and plentiful. I had never had rabbit (which was well-cooked), and the sweetness of the peppers really brought it together. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and our bartender was very attentive without being overbearing and very knowledgeable--he gave thorough, detailed descriptions and recommendations on the wine list and the food menu (beyond what I would've expected). He even replaced my water and apologized after realizing he poured it to the brim, which really wasn't an issue but I appreciated his correction anyway. We ordered the side of wood grilled corn to start, I ordered the malfadine al limone pasta and my boyfriend ordered the spaghetti pomodoro. The wood grilled corn had a nice char to it and we enjoyed the accompanying sauce and cheese on top; however, based on the menu description I was expecting a little more of a Calabrian chili flavor / kick. The pomodoro was good but nothing to write home about, and the malfadine was a bit of a surprise / the highlight! I enjoyed the curly pasta texture and loved the lightness of the sauce paired with the salt flavor and complexity of the salmon roe on top. We love a good dessert but nothing caught our eye on the menu this time, as we don't prefer the soft, creamy desserts like panna cotta (as opposed to something more tangible like a cannoli). Lastly, we also had the following glasses of wine: Verdecchio, Verdeca, Montepulciano, and the Carignan Blend. As someone that loves crisp white wines with high acidity and minerality, I loved the Verdecchio. The Verdeca was refreshing but too light and not fruit forward enough for my preference. We both liked the Carignan, as we like deeper berry flavors, and the Montepulciano was OK (didn't love but didn't dislike). Would definitely love to come back and try some of the other wine varieties and menu options!
