This is a new review, an update of my latest experience at what used to be one of the places I always wanted to frequent ... I went to Kaka'ako after work to see IU's The Winning Concert at Ward Theater and made a reservation at Strait so I could have dinner before the 7pm showing. I ordered a Hendricks gin & tonic ($16) and perused the two-page menu. I don't think there have been any changes since I was last here (June 2024). I ordered my favorite Crispy Chicken Lollipops ($21) and something I hadn't tried before, Kaya Toast ($14). While waiting for my food, I sensed something off with my drink, so I asked my server if it was really Hendricks gin. This is one of my favorite gins and I know its flavor intimately. He said that's what he ordered from the bar but would check. I asked for a second ... Alas, it was no better. I suspect it was the tonic water. Some bars use tonic water from a soda gun ... I don't know if Straits did or not, but this was not the Hendricks gin and tonic that I'm accustomed to. The chicken lollipops came, and I was surprised at the change in presentation. There were now just three lollipops (versus four) and they were laid flat on a round plate atop micro greens. They no longer looked like lollipops; to me, the Frenching of the drumettes was poorly done. At least they tasted like the lollipops of old. The Kaya Toast arrived much later ... This was an interesting dish. There were three slender finger sandwiches made with toasted bread, kaya and butter and a dish containing what was supposed to be a mixture of Pandan Coconut Jam, Sous Vide Egg, Dark Soya, and White Pepper; essentially a coconut cream custard. Perhaps the butter was too soft or unsalted because I got the sweet but not the savory. I think the dish sat too long before it got to me ... I asked my server for coffee but never got it (but was not charged for it) ... I eventually got the check and paid online after reading the QR code. All in all, a very disappointing visit to what used to be one of my favorite places in Kaka'ako. I don't know what happened ... the restaurant wasn't busy, service was leisurely ... I walked out feeling unsatisfied. I'm sorry to say, I can't recommend Straits based upon this visit and I canceled a reservation I had for the 26th. There are better places to spend $83.55 for two drinks and two appetizers.
Came here for dinner to celebrate the holidays with my girlfriends. Didn't have any expectations. It was half empty when we came around 530pm. Though the place was slowly getting filled with people. We all ordered our drinks first but my beer, it took quite a long time and the last to come. The server was very friendly and gave me periodic status of my beer. But by then our food had came. We had to ask for utensils several times since there were none set at the table. It's a nice place to hang out with friends.
First time here... located at the bottom floor of the Ward Theaters. You can make reservations on Yelp. We walked in. Food took awhile - tasty. Been open for a year Nov 2023 was their opening. Wok Fried rice noodles "chow kway teow" prawns, lup cheong , sambal.... Soooo good Banana bread pancakes Haupia Sauce, cured egg yolks... hubby liked it. He likes coconut flavor nasi lemak Anchovies, Kim chee, peanuts, wok fried egg with Kalbi... sooo good- the rice has a hint of coconut flavor in The jasmine rice Caramel French toast. Cornflakes. The ratio compound butter. Fresh fruit - it's a whole different twist on French toast Restaurant is Casual, quiet, lights dim... one server for the entire restaurant- Mike deserves a raise - service with a smile. Not rushed
Food quality: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Cleanliness: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Don't skip on: The Beef Rendang Straits was a surprisingly delicious meal and such a fun and trendy restaurant! In the heart of the Waikiki shopping center, this restaurant offers pan Asian cuisine with great flavors! The staff was very nice and welcoming and the restaurant was clean from what saw. We ordered the Beef Rendang, garlic noodles, dry fried eggplant, Hainanese chicken, coconut pandan soda, and the milk and honey cocktail. Everything was delicious! Can't wait to go back!
Review continuation. ...another containing a spicy and tangy Hainan ginger-garlic chili and tart sauce. $26 We'd happily return but will consider making a reservation for an earlier dinner and request to be seated furthest from the bar lounge. Sorry, but we prefer eating in a restaurant and not a nightclub.
I visited the restaurant on a Sunday, having made a reservation for brunch at 10:30 am. Multiple friends had recommended their Kaya toast, and I was excited to try it. Upon arrival, we found the restaurant empty except for a few staff members preparing near the bar and kitchen. This was odd, as Google Maps had indicated they opened at 9 am. As we entered, a man from the bar area yelled across the restaurant to inform us that they couldn't serve us food since they technically didn't open until 11 am -- but if we wanted to order drinks or just wait in general, he could still seat us early. Confused, I explained that I had a reservation for 10:30 am, and he suggested it must have been a "glitch" and that they weren't open. We decided to walk around and return later. While waiting outside, we thought we might as well figure out what we wanted to order, since we were starving. However, upon browsing their website, we noticed that the brunch menu was nowhere to be found. Around 10:50 am, we returned to the restaurant, and the same man greeted us. He reiterated that they weren't open until 11 am. I politely reminded him that we had been there just 20 minutes earlier and that he had offered to seat us early. He suddenly remembered and reluctantly seated us. He handed us the menu, which looked completely different from what I had seen online in other reviews. There were no brunch items listed. It appeared as if someone had hastily typed up a menu using Microsoft Word in Times New Roman font. I asked if they were serving brunch, and said no -- he explained that they only had items on the current menu and that they were in a transition period, revamping the entire menu and the bar program. This information would have been great to know before deciding to come specifically for brunch. I asked if there was any chance they could still make the Kaya toast, and he promptly said no. A party member attempted to order calamari (on the menu) but the server informed us that the kitchen hadn't prepared it. Instead of the expected brunch food, we were now ordering an extremely heavy breakfast, including short ribs, curry, and some extremely salty garlic noodles. When the check arrived, I mistakenly tapped my credit card on the bottom of the reader instead of the top. The server rudely corrected me, saying, "Um, it's because you tapped it on the bottom. You have to tap it on the top." The tip page was preselected at 20%, the server kept holding the payment system for me and said "just sign at the bottom" - instead of allowing me a moment or some privacy to choose my own tip. Only a few automatic tip percentages were available: 22%, 20%, and 18%. I didn't want to cause a scene, so I reluctantly chose 18% and signed. This entire experience was a complete fiasco. Brunch wasn't even being served even though the website indicated it was, Yelp allowed me to make a reservation when they weren't even open and the hours were not updated on both the website and Google Maps. The server's attitude was exceptionally rude, and needless to say I won't be returning. I've shared my experience with my local friends as well who will no longer be dining here. To make matters worse, there's no way to contact this restaurant via email. The website lacks an email address or contact form, which clearly indicates that they disregard feedback and customer experience. So alas, a Yelp review it is.
Food here is amazing! Everything was cooked well and had so much flavor. We ordered family style so we got to try several dishes. My absolute favorite was the butter chicken katsu - I would come back just for this. But everything we ordered was amazing. The noodles are so great and the hainan chicken was so good. Also loved the dessert. At first I laughed that there was milk and cookies because it sounds so simple for this place, but it's anything but. It was amazing and I would also come back just for that. Service was a little slow at times but overall friendly and helpful. We went early on a weekday so we were able to walk in. And there's a lot of parking nearby since it's in the Ward complex.
We like going to Straits before the cinema. Great tasting food, good atmosphere and interior and always kind attentive service. Cocktails are STRONG. Love the roti and chicken lollipops. Deducting a star as it's quite pricey for small plates.
This was recommended to me by my friend who lives on the island. I was excited to try because of the Malay and Indonesian influences. We went on a Saturday night at 8pm, and this place was poppin. Didn't expect it to be loungey and loud, Kind of like a club. Definitely a vibe if that's what you are going for. We had a reservation at 8pm, and unfortunately the hostess came back to us and told us they overbooked for the night. How do you overbook when there's an online reservation system? We hung out at the bar until about 8:25, and finally got seated. We had sat down, and it took 10 minutes until our waiter acknowledged us and then another 5 minutes until we even got waters. We ordered - chicken lollipops: crispy, loved the glaze on it - Kaya toast: strong pandan flavor (which I love) and more of a sweet bite to me - beef Rendang: the star dish in my opinion, the meat reminds me of authentic Rendang and loved the added pandan polenta twist - - -spicy street noodles: pretty spicy! The mee goreng I'm used to is a little drier, this was more saucy - hainan chicken: pretty good, I liked how there was no bone, and the ginger garlic sauce was great. Just note this isn't a hot dish, it's served room temp. Overall, food was decent, but subtracted a star due to service. If you go on a Saturday night, expect it to be packed!
3.5 star overall review. Celebrating Father's Day here. I read the enthusiastic Yelp reviews on the Hainan Chicken dish and the menu appeared tasty and savory. According to its website, Straits Restaurant, is a Singaporean dining experience since 1987. The restaurant brings the flavors of Southeast Asia to Hawaii. This is a large restaurant that took over the Big City Diner Ward location. Well decorated interior. However, the tables are a bit too close to each other. It can be quite noisy with the amount of people in your immediate vicinity. The acoustics in this restaurant echos people's voices. A dropped dish resonated loudly in the entire restaurant. Ambiance: 3/5 stars Our server was also the bartender? So we had to get his attention several times. He was busy tending to multiple tables and the bar. We ordered the Hainan chicken ( STRAITS SIGNATURE DISH, Poached Chicken, Aromatic Chicken Rice & Broth with Sweet Soy Sauce, Ginger Garlic Sauce Tangy Hainan Chili sauce, served at room temperature) and Nasi Lemak (Includes, Pandan Coconut Rice, Wok Fried Egg, Spicy Pickled Vegetables, Fried Anchovies and Peanuts, served with Aromatic Chicken Broth and my choice of Miso Glazed Salmon) for our brunch. The Hainan Chicken dish was delicious and savory. The broth was light and complimented the spicy and savory sauces. This dish rates 5/5 stars. I will order this again. The Nasi Lemak was an unfortunate choice. The spicy pickled vegetables were killer spicy : 0. The broth and rice did not quench the heat and your taste buds are muted by the heat factor. If you enjoy spicy, you may enjoy this part of the dish. I ate a large bite of rice after my first taste and stopped eating it lol. Now, onto the miso salmon. Well, you can't taste the miso. It was extremely salty ( think burnt teriyaki sauce) and raw. My first cut and bite of the salmon revealed a gelatinous raw interior of the salmon. I looked closely and confirmed the salmon was not cooked sufficiently. I was able to get the attention of our server and showed him the raw salmon. He immediately took the plate and said he would have the chef make another plate for me. In the meantime, I snuck a few bites of the Hainan chicken plate lol. The second attempt at the Nasi Lemak proved to be just as unfortunate. This time the salmon was overcooked and dry, with the same salty sauce as the first one. I couldn't eat it. My sweet husband tried to eat some of it. He enjoyed the spicy vegetables. I cannot recommend ordering the miso salmon as your entree choice for the Nasi Lemak. This dish rates 2/5 stars. After note: Our server must have informed the manager of the situation, because when i received the bill, I was only charged for the Hainan chicken dish. That was an unexpected surprise. Bathrooms are available inside the restaurant.
I came here for a birthday dinner on a Friday at 6:45. We made reservations which was perfect since the restaurant started to fill up. We were quickly seated and given our waters and menus. I appreciated how attentive the staff was throughout the night. They were frequently checking in with us to fill our water and ask how we were doing. We got a variety of different dishes and shared it family style. Every dish impressed me as the spices stood out. My favorite dishes were the wok fried rice noodles and butter chicken katsu. If you don't like spicy foods, I wouldn't recommend this place. The staff had to keep refilling our cups because we were drinking so much water. The restaurant has a chill ambiance with beautiful decor and furniture. This is a great spot to grab drinks with your friends or take your family for a nice dinner. I'm excited to try their other dishes!
A new restaurant that took over Big City Diner. The place is newly renovated with a very unique atmosphere. There's a regular dining area, a lounge, and a bar area. Inside was very cool! Love it! We got seated at the lounge. So many interesting options with a Asian Fusion twist on the menu. We ordered an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert to share. - Nasi Lemak $22 - comes with veggies, egg, and chicken wing. A variety of flavors in this dish. Chicken wing was so crispy. - Roti Parata $12 - different from the crispy Thai version I had. This roti is more softer and the sauce was spicy. But very yummy appetizer. - Teh Tarik French Toast $19 - this was a filling dessert. The toast was crispy and very sweet. It was good! I'll be back to try other food options. It's a nice place to hang out with friends!
If you're a guy who likes the smell of his own farts, then you will love Straits. And I'm not talking durian. Cmon, don't look at me like I wrote the Codex Seraphinianus, I'm just living in it part-time. The food here at Straits is very tasty and flavorful. So much so that it can turn the ordinary into something other-worldly like as depicted in the Codex. Our party of four - three woman and me - was at Straits at 5:00 on a Tuesday. Did you know they offer tacos for $4? We didn't order any. But on Wednesday, my dental hygienist said we should have. Service and ambiance here are excellent. My dental hygienist said that after 9:00, the restaurant becomes a night club. Now this is a transformation unwanted by geriatrics like me. We ordered the Crispy Calamari, Garlic Noodles, Nuoc Cham Pork, Hainan Chicken, Roti Prata, and Lemongrass Beef. All of the dishes were tasty although the calamari wasn't that crispy and the Garlic Noodles were not as great as I remember having at Crustacean in San Francisco twenty-two years ago. Even though, I would order those dishes again. My only caution is that some of the menu dishes we didn't order are on the expensive side. But the sauces accompanying most of the dishes were truly drinkable. I will need to come back with the guys, so doing something that might seem close to a faux pas would be overlooked as just a little rowdy. Thanks to Nadine C. for picking up the tab, to Jolene L. for returning home and giving us a reason for getting together, and to Irene M. for joining us so we could try so many new dishes. Recommended for adventurous eaters.
Food was great, fun and trendy vibe. Loved the crab and spicy street noodles! Recommend ordering to share. Loud inside and service was friendly but not attentive. read more

Dear Jarenn, thank you for sharing your positive feedback! We're…
Straits is located in Ward at the former Big City Diner location. They remodeled the space with modern design and classy ambience. We tried this place during off dinner hours at 4:00pm right when they are opened. We didn't make reservations and the place was packed right at opening time. The manager was kind enough to offer us a table as long as we finish before 5:00pm which was another party reserved time. It was totally fine with us since we already know what we wanted to order and we usually eat quickly. Roti prata: The roti was not bad. It was little thicker than what we have tried at other places. The middle is a little doughy. The coconut curry sauce was pretty good. It goes well with the roti. Origami butterfish: The butterfish was moist and delicious. The toppings help add additional flavors. We wished that there were more of the ikura as the topping. Garlic noodles: The garlic noodles were flavorful but heavy on the butter. There was a garlicky taste but the buttery flavor overpowering. Spicy street noodles: The spicy noodles tasted like Pad Thai which wasn't bad but it was more on the sweeter side than spicy. Overall, the foods were not bad but their dishes were not authentic to Malaysia/Singapore-style in terms of flavor. The service was very friendly. Our server, Victoria, was sweet and kind. read more
First time visiting here to join their happy hour. Nice decor in the bar area where we sit for happy hour. Tried HH menu; CURRY CRAB DIP Curry crab was served cold and bread was not enough to finish dip so we had to order extra bread for $3. AYAM BEREMPAH was not crispy... not enough favor. Overall services are great and maybe we should try food from regular menu. read more
Awesome restaurant for dinner or drinks. I loved the atmosphere of the place with lots of colors and style. Group of 4 and we ordered a bunch of different things. Appetizers: roti (nice kick in the curry dipping sauce but little bread imo) $12, crispy chicken lollipops (came with 4 and this was my favorite since it came out steaming hot and crispy with a nice sweet and spicy kick) $16 and Satay sticks (came with 5) $16. Mains: hainan chicken (tender and comes with rice) $24, lemongrass beef $46 (MUST TRY since the meat is tender and flavored well and of course come with garlic fries ) & origami butterfish $46 (large piece and soft). Cute new place to dine with friends or family. Only con is that the tables are soooo close together it's hard to hear others in your group. Also, the windows are right by the tables and I don't really care for people walking by and watching me eat. Otherwise an awesome place for dinner and drinks!! read more
The newest hip and trendy place in Kaka'ako catering towards the younger crowd. There's also bottle service which you could inquire about. Seems popular for a GNO and large parties who want to get dressed up. After 8pm the place turns more into a club with a DJ playing music. There's also a lot of flashing lights when they do bottle service. Female servers are young, wearing tight dresses/heels showing cleavage. We mainly came for the food and drinks and it was an overall decent experience. Ambiance was dimly lit, loud, and lively. Our server Jordan was friendly and down to earth. -My favorite of the dishes was actually the Beef Rendang ($29) - this has the most flavor in my opinion. Very tender beef in a kaffir lime curry. Offers an interesting twist on a classic since they give a pandan polenta underneath giving the dish a bright attractive look. -Straits Frites ($15)- basically a fancy way of saying plate of fries. They were crispy and good. The kaffir lime aioli was tasty! Also came with galangal cocktail sauce but wasn't a fan. -The Signature Dish - Hainan Chicken ($28) was decent, but not impressive. The aromatic broth was overly salty and didn't complement the dish well. 3 sauces helped give the chicken some flavor though. -The Satay Sticks ($18) were below average as it was overcooked and the sauce was bland. Cocktails: We tried Milk & Honey, Sunday Afternoon, Sir Raffles. They all had a unique flavor that you wouldn't find anywhere else in Hawaii. Tasty but they were not very strong though. Definitely more for people who want a party atmosphere and an excuse to dress up in Hawaii. I saw several people who came with their kids and I felt terrible for them, the music is way too loud and flashy for them. Overall, I'd come back again to try other dishes and cocktails. read more

It took us a minute to get seated but once we did we were ready to order. Everything on their menu looks amazing. The oysters were a great starter. Fresh and sweet. The ribeye was ok but the mash or whatever sauce that was under it was not palatable for me. Way too much ginger. The mussels and crab were amazing! I love the way it was stir fried. And the chicken lollipops weren't dry with plenty flavor. I'd mainly come here for the drinks. I got the milk honey and presentation was impressive. But the drink itself was DELICIOUS. Dim-lit and good music. It's giving boujee restaurant/night club. read more
Finally got to see for myself what all the buzz has been about at this popular new Singaporean restaurant under the Ward Theaters. Be sure to make a reservation although it's possible to walk in and sit in the lounge. There is a 90 min time limit in the dining room so try to be on time. 5 stars for food which is a welcome new addition to Honolulu's dining scene. We had the Hainan chicken their signature dish. It comes with sweet soy, ginger garlic, and tangy hainan sauce which were all good. The rice had a subtle but nice consistency and flavor. The only thing I didn't like about it was the soup that accompanied it. I was surprised and dismayed that it reminded me of Lipton. We also got the crab garlic noodles as recommended by our server Min which allowed us to have both crab and noodles in one dish. I loved the flavorful garlicky goodness on the outside! But I must say that given the choice crab curry is still my favorite. For a cocktail I had the Purple Rain, a whiskey based drink with egg whites and blackberries, which was good in both looks and taste. 4 stars for furnishings (but I'll round up overall). I thought the decor with a tropical neon theme was fun but my friend thought it should have been more classy. We agreed that for the price point the tables and chairs could have been more plush and comfy. Also the tables are close together so it's a bit noisy. But I guess this hum from the constant flow of customers also contributes to the fun vibe and energy of the place. We were informed that the music would start after 8:00 at which point the lounge would turn into more of a club. Good thing we went early before the young crowd came so we could chat comfortably over dinner. Looking forward to trying more dishes with more people. read more

Food is bomb, service is on point. Definitely a restaurant that stands out due to the amount of detail put in with the decor. Food wise recommendations - everything was good but my personal favorite was the Hinan Chicken rice, and the crab. Definitely be back to try more food & drinks from here. read more
I read a lot of good comments (good services and good food) about this restaurant and wanted to bring my best friend for her birthday dinner. Unfortunately, I made a wrong decision. I made the reservation 2 weeks ahead. By the time I arrived the restaurant at 5:50pm, the host assigned us to the lounge area but actually there're some empty tables available. The hostess was pretty nice and reassigned us to the table which facing the kitchen. The design and atmosphere of the restaurant was pretty good. After the hostess escorted us to the table, we have been waiting for more than 15 mins and felt like we're just ignored by everybody. We called a guy for only the iced water and asked him where's our server. He was gone after he dropped off 3 glasses of water on our table without any follow up. Waited for another 10 mins but still nobody came to our table for taking the order. I saw a gentlemen who looks like a manager and asked who and where was my server. Afterward, he looked at his iPad and questioned the servers who was handle my table. I was really pissed by that time. Waited another 5 mins and finally a lady (I didn't asked for her name but she has a long and gold color highlighted hair) came to take our order. We ordered 6 items on the menu but wanted to add 2 more items in the middle of our dinner. I was looking at my server but she was just standing on the side and chit chatting to another server. Waited for another 10 mins for her to notice I'm calling her. IT'S JUST A HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICES. It's so hard to find my server during the entire dinner. It took a while for me to ask for a check as well. I WILL NOT recommend this restaurant to my friends. Lastly, I asked for the complimentary birthday dessert when I made the reservation and I confirmed it the day before my visited. Ended up they missed my request. Basically their food was pretty good but a bit pricey. I expected a good services at this upscale restaurant but they're failed. NEVER AGAIN! :( read more

Dear Yvonne,…
Do yourself a favor and ask for Jaime as your waitress! She was amazing ! She was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave great suggestions based on our party size and drink options! We came here to celebrate my husband and I's birthday's and we couldn't have had a better experience. We came with an older group and the hip, posh scene was a surprise to them but they all loved it too! The only downside was it was a bit loud and hard to have a conversation. They do give you a free glass of champagne to celebrate your birthday though so that was fun! Now my favorite part... THE FOOD-- it was all phenomenal! We ordered a bunch of items and shared it all family style. We got the whole fish which was just a bit spicy and delicious, the garlic noodles, wok fried mussels, chicken lollipops and fried rice. Everything was so flavorful! Some of my favorites were the mussels, the garlic noodles and the fish! Like I said, everything had huge flavor! All in all, this was great and I would LOVE to come back here ! Again, ask for Jamie because she made our experience 5 stars! read more

Definitely one of those hyped places with great marketing and help from influencers. My husband and I went to check out their lunch menu. The food was good but definitely overpriced. The best part of our meal was their fries. They overcooked our lemongrass beef so the server took it back for us and when they brought it back, it was extra rare. We had asked for medium rare to medium per their recommendation so that was disappointing but the fries were amazing lol The crispy chicken lollipops were good but I wouldn't get it again for that price. Their Cobb Salad was okay... I think overall the ambiance and the service was great so if you're looking for some fun cocktails or a girls' night out/date, it would be worth it but if you're looking for some amazing Singaporean food, I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe we'll give it another chance for dinner some time and order other dishes? read more
They took over the old big city diner in ward. I read somewhere that they were going for a crazy rich Asians vibe and I do totally get it. I dig all neon lights everywhere and the decor. We rolled in on a Monday night without a reservation and it was packed! They were able to sit us at a free table. Service was really good, even tho they were busy our food came out pretty quickly! We ordered a couple appetizers and garlic noodles. I heard things were supposedly a bit on the spicier side but the dishes we ordered weren't spicy they had spicy dips that came with them but even those had a mild at best kick. I think next time we're going to try the ones with chili peppers next to them. I think out of all the dishes I liked the roti the best! I wish the peanut sauce was a little thicker but other than that it was really good. This is a very hip feeling place, like a place to be to get some drinks and hang out. Really like the vibe it gives off. I think they will do really well. read more

Singaporean fusion cuisine with a neon retro hip vibe. There's bold wall paper, a mix of tables and lounge area seating, and trendy gold utensils. The newest addition to Ward villlage, it replaced big city diners space near the theaters. The service was friendly and the staff likes to make recommendations on their favorite dishes and libations which is helpful. Most of the dishes are family style. The curry hamachi crudo was my favorite dish of the evening. Perfect bite with a mild curry sauce was a wonderful pairing. I also enjoyed the spicy street noodles which had egg noodle, cabbage, shrimp tossed together in a very flavorful sauce that had sweetness and that Asian fishiness. The chicken lollipops came highly recommended. It has a crisp and sticky spicy sweet exterior and tender meat inside. The only miss of the night was the pork dish. The flavors were fine but the meat was chewy and fatty. Not in a good pork belly way. Their drinks are really good and potent. Tried the Jillian which is their version of the lychee martini. It comes with a show stopping nitrogen bubble on the rim. The milk and honey is nice and mild poured over a rose ice cube. Overall great food. You pay for the atmosphere and vibes but it's fun to go with friends or a date night. Tables are kind of close together and it's a louder environment but that makes it hip lol. read more
He reserved this place for dinner at 8 after doing some due diligence on TripAdvisor. Straits is a new hip restaurant, family owned we were told. Its lively decor, lounge and bar space is quite inviting. The music is pretty loud so it's a loud atmosphere, expect to almostttttt have to yell--definitely no inside voices. People dressed casual and up up, it was a mix tbh. Our waitress was very attentive, checking in on us quite a bit till the mains came where it slowed down which was cool bc it left room for uninterrupted convo. For starters we had the fried chicken lollipops followed up with garlic noodles and yu sheng salad. We were pleased with all of our dishes. The chicken reminded me of bonchon, the noodles were peppered to perfection, and the salad was a layered delights. Unfortunately they don't have dessert yet. My drink reminded me of a Moscow mule. It was a little sweeter than what I would've liked but not too much that I wouldn't order it again. The lounge area looked like quite the vibe, they allow for bottle service. It's definitely giving mix and mingle. Would definitely return. read more
My friends and I made last minute reservations and were surprised they had availability. I've been to Straits in SF at the Westfield mall during HH but nothing like the one that just opened up here in Hawaii. When entering, the vibes were immediately Singaporean-ish. Not that I've been there but just based off of watching "Crazy Rich Asians" and my friend who's been there recently. The vibes are definitely my type of place to be, from the interior to the bathroom mirror, absolutely love!!! Since my friends and I had a late reservation, we weren't as hungry so we only ordered two appetizers to share and had a few drinks while catching up. I can't remember what the dishes were called (off the top of my head) but I do know they were flavorful and def makes me want to go back to try more! Our server was a little slow and hard to understand, hence the reason I took off a star. I'm hoping that my next dining experience, the server is quicker or at least communicative. I heard the Hanan chicken is to die for; definitely going back for that! read more
We were so excited to try the place. The decor looks beautiful and makes it look like such a fun vibe. We were able to easily make reservations online. When we go there, everyone greeted us an welcomed us. All the decor, silverware, and everything was so beautiful. We started with the Jillian drink which comes with an iridescent bubble on top. Amazing! It's a lychee martini and tasted good. They said the food is Singaporean inspired and it all had great flavor. We started with the hamachi crudo which was delicious, one of my favorite dishes. We also got the chicken "lollipops" which were also really tasty. The spicy street noodles were not very spicy but tasted really good. We also got a pork belly dish which was not our favorite but, all together, everything was great. I think this is a great new spot. Parking is very convenient at Ward. The food is delicious. It's beautiful. And I will def go back to try some other dishes! read more
Expensive and not very authentic food. The drinks however are unique and delicious. I took a client here for a business dinner. I had been looking forward to sharing international dishes with them that I love, but was sorely disappointed in the preparation. The ambiance was visually appealing, but loud. Waiter service was slow. Our reservation experience was very good through the OpenTable app and were seated right away. The quality and price of the food is not worth it in my opinion, but drinks in the nice atmosphere would be a good choice. Parking - free in Ward Village. ADA accessible read more
First time here for a girls night! We had a great time and will def be back. It was friday and I easily made a reservation for 8:30pm online for 4. Lots of seafood on the menu we had someone allergic to crab and shrimp so ill have to be back to order some of those items. Our waitress recommended the roti which was so good with a side of delicious yellow curry. The texture of the roti was flaky chewy and crunchy we ordered a 2nd one because it was just not enough to share one order. Not pictured was the garlic noodles which was my least favorite just because of the amount of course cracksd black pepper was too overpowering. Everything else i would order again! The mussels were tasty and tender. Drinks were crafted well and not too sweet which I liked. Very nice ambience and DJ made it fun to dance in our seats a bit. read more
Well hello there Straits and welcome to Kaka'ako! We went on day 2 of their full opening. Whenever we go to a restaurant that just opened, we know to expect delays or other hiccups. That is totally fine with us, restaurants need to get their groove and they need to hear from customers what is working and what isn't. Straights was everything we expected! Atmosphere: Feels super trendy and chic. I do feel if you arrive in shorts and slippers you will feel underdressed. Have a night out! Get all dressy! Feel the vibe! It has a dark feeling inside, more of a chic nightclub then a day time type of restaurant. We always like to sit at the bar. Small bar, maybe fits 10? They have a lounge area also near the bar with those low tables more of a group stopping point. Hard to really eat the food from those low tables. Then they have their main dining room area. Food: Holy moly SPICY in all CAPS! wowza. We had a hard time finding something on the menu that wouldn't burn our mouths off. lol Sad to say but we ended up ordering a few things but they were just so hot we couldn't take more than 1 bite. What we did eat was the flat bread, but did NOT dip it in the hot curry sauce and the bone marrow. Bone marrow has very little meat and a ton of bread crumbs. For the cost, in my opinion, not worth it. We did try the whole fish but one bite was one bite too much. lol- spic-eeeeeee. Our bartender, Brian was amazing! He is he reason we WILL return for sure. Good cocktails, attentive to us, no issues at all. I think a lot of people are really going to enjoy this restaurant and have a great time here. Welcome to the neighborhood! read more

We're thrilled to receive your review! It brings us great joy to hear…
appealing for a younger crowd who likes to yell to speak to one another over dinner. I can see how this appeals to singles and groups in their 20-30s. Unpopular opinion compared to other reviews but I thought the food was just okay. The noodles were semi sweet and not very dynamic. The fish was super fishy- to be honest we didn't really eat it and for the price $55 it was a bit of a shame. Our server was sweet and checked on us regularly. The manager was upbeat and spunky- she came over and checked on every table which I was pleased to see how great their hospitality was and the true essence of the Aloha spirit. read more

Visited the restaurant on a busy Saturday night with a friends family. Called more than a week ahead to secure the table. They allow for two hours of dining. The staff was extremely kind, will share great recommendations, and offer really exceptional service. Comfortable seating in the dining area and more lounge like chairs near the entrance that some were eating at as well but had to bend over as the tables were lower. Nice lighting that dimmed around 7pm. Now to the food! As someone who has been to Singapore a few times this was authentic, tasty, and they have a great selection. The appetizers were good, would recommend the lollipops based on the seasoning and crisp factor. The roti prata's sauce was a bit spicy but still great. Although a bit pricy, if you share the dishes with others you can try a lot. The butterfish was delicious, not a huge amount but really tender. The Hainan chicken was really tasty and came with a variety of sauces and the traditional rice. Also the noodles were great! Meegoreng was quite spicy, I can handle spice but this definitely caused you to reach for the water. The wok fried with Chinese sausage and garlic noodles were really good. Some tables nearby ordered the crab and were provided gloves. Looked great! They have several alcohol choices. The Sir Raffles was fresh but not too alcohol forward. Probably could have had a second or third. Lots of birthday parties, groups with families, and millennials/gen z. Didn't notice any children nearby but I'm sure kids would appreciate some of the menu items like the appetizers, garlic noodles, and coconut shrimp fried rice. Unfortunately they don't have a dessert menu which is a bit odd for a restaurant but they are still relatively new. Would definitely recommend for parties, after work events, and a nice relaxing evening with friends! read more

First time dining in, no reservation was made. They let us walk in and sat us at the bar which we did not mind. If you're thinking about sitting at the booths then I suggest making a reservation beforehand. Ambiance was truly romantic and really great for date nights or even dinner with friends or family. Located adjacent to Bucca di Beppo at ward and shares the same parking lot as Dave & Busters. From the food to the customer service to the ambiance I would say it is a 10/10 and will come back. read more

I'm not quite sure what the hype is all about with this place. The decor and setting are nice, it's a modern asian twist. It's clean but loud. The service was alright. We ordered several dishes, we were brought a dish we never ordered and then we never given a dish we did order. I'm not sure if there was a mix-up by the waitress, but they should have at least checked on what we did order or ask if we got all our food. The most disappointing part was the food. This is one of the only Singaporean restaurants in the state, and the food does not live up to be called Singaporean. read more

Mikey, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! We apologize for…
Exciting to see more representation for Singaporean food in Honolulu! South East Asian food holds a special place in my heart. It is complex, flavorful, and has a lot of interesting textures. At first glance, the decor is very hip, upscale, and trendy. A bright neon sign hangs over the bar and music blasts loudly in the speakers overhead. There are tropical themed fixtures and decorative plants throughout the space. There are two separate areas for dining, regular tables and the lounge area. We had a large party of ten and were only able to book the lounge area on short notice. This restaurant gets REALLY LOUD, you will definitely need to shout to be able to have a conversation. I've gone to my fair share of music festivals but the music is unnecessarily loud. If I ever do come back and sit in the lounge, I'd probably have to bring earplugs. Granted, we were seated next to the speaker so it might be more comfortable sitting farther away. (I did see that they do provide bottle service so I can see what kind of demographic they're catering to) On to the food... We ordered a LOT of food. All the portions are big enough to be shared. The strongest dishes were the lemongrass beef and the beef rendang. The lemongrass beef was very tender and well seasoned. It melted in my mouth. Rendang was a generous portion size and also very tender. I would have liked to taste a little more of the spices. I love pandan flavored anything but I'm not really sure how I felt about polenta. I don't think it really added much to showcase the flavor of the Rendang. For the food, there were a few misses. The weaker dishes we tried were the hainan chicken, garlic noodles, chaw kway teow, coconut shrimp fried rice, and lollipop chicken. Hainan chicken for $28 is pretty steep. I thought it was pretty average in terms of flavor and could be improved. The chicken could be softer, and I wished that there was a little more flavor in the rice and aromatic broth. Garlic noodles were good but a little too salty. Chaw Kway Teow had a nice charred flavor but a little too sweet for my preference. The coconut shrimp fried rice was on the spicier side so some people in my party had a hard time eating it. Lastly, the crispy lollipop chicken was a really good portion size but a little too dry. The biggest strength was the phenomenal service! Our waitress was very quick, efficient, and personable. Our table was touched throughout our meal and drinks were plentiful. Wait time for food was also pretty timely. We always had a steady stream of food always hitting the table. I think my biggest issue from the dining experience was the ambiance. It feels conflicting at times because of the price point. At night, there is an almost intimate dream-like vibe with the dark and moody lighting. The loud music makes it a little disorienting. I would have liked to feel a little more comfortable without my ears feeling like they were ringing throughout the entire meal. I think the food does have the potential to better and it is still a decent representation of Singaporean food. If you are new to this type of cuisine, it still may be worth trying when you want to splurge. I know that it is a relatively new restaurant so I expect a few kinks but I am hoping things smooth out in the next few months! read more

The food was so delicious! Has a lot of Thai and Malaysian flavors and it was cool to see how they plated each dish and put their own spin on it. My favorites were the straits frites (fries), the garlic noodles, and the pandan coconut rice. These are must-try's if you plan to visit!! The fries had a lemongrass flavored aioli that tasted like nothing I've ever had! The pandan coconut rice was so fragrant and had that hint of coconut! It paired well with all the dishes and I found myself eating it on its own. As for the rest of the dishes, I didn't love the beef rendang, spicy basil chicken, and spicy street noodles. The flavors were good but didn't have that wow factor the first three had. The people and environment make this place a 11/10. The waiters were so sweet and attentive! They would check in on us and make sure we had everything we needed! That plus the dim lighting created the perfect mood for a birthday celebration. It felt sophisticated and fun at the same time. I ADORE THIS PLACE! This was the perfect experience and I highly recommend to everyone to try once! read more

Ok, I fully admit that I read the bill wrong & am sorry for the initially negative review I left. Let's start over. We were super excited to get dressed up & have caviar and Asian fusion food, and the reviews of this place were outstanding. We were seated right away, and we had amazing service the whole evening. I started with a Sunday Afternoon drink. We got the caviar service, and man, was it ever delicious! The crème fraiche has a bright twist to it that made it absolutely sing! By far the best thing all night! We got whole snapper, beautifully presented & too spicy for me, but my husband loved it. The prawn fried rice was a nice foil to the spice. You guys, then things get interesting - they just start bringing us stuff to try! One beautiful thing after the other! All just because they knew it was my birthday! I felt like a princess! AND a glass of champagne! So, I'm glad I tipped well because I feel really bad about my mistaken first impression & thanks for calling me to clear it up. You guys really outdid yourselves. read more

I mean...the food tastes as great as it looks! The staff is so friendly and the restaurant has a trendy vibe that you can tell the owners put a lot of thought into. There's a cute lounge area as well as a more defined dining room seating area. The Milk and Honey cocktail is my favorite drink and the garlic noodles are a must-have. I heard it also gets FUN later at night, but haven't stayed late enough to witness the action. Will have to experience it firsthand soon! read more

I definitely got out of my comfort zone eating here. I originally wanted to come here just for a drink after shopping, however extensive shopping led to needing to eat. The server was amazing as she explained the menud and provided extremely good suggestions. Heads up majority of the food items are spicy as noted by the red pepper next to it. We ordered the laska noodle soup, roti plata, garlic noodles, and Hainan chicken. All the dishes were amazing and quite a big portion. We shared everything but the laska because it was way to spicy for me even with the sauce on the side. We were extremely full and almost didn't order dessert, but I'm glad we did. I ordered the pandan chiffon and omg it was amazing! Vanilla flavor cake with a lihing mui pineapple topping to die for! I thought it was going to be interesting but it paired so well. The cake was extremely light, frosting perfect flavor and not sweet. I can't rave enough about this dessert. I highly recommend trying this place out. Side note you can sit lounge style or at a table. Great for larger gatherings or just date night. There is also a kids menu. read more
Heard many good things so, decided to give it a try. Reservations were made for a Sunday evening and happy I did. Restaurant was decorated beautifully. Dark tones, sleek Interior, tropical vibes loved it! Seated immediately and hostess was very gracious. Along comes our server Miguel. He greeted us and proceeded to take our drink order. I ordered the Choya Uji Green Tea Sake. We also ordered the 6 piece raw Oyster platter along with the Bone Marrow. Food came out surprisingly quick. The Oysters were perfect in size and served on a bed of ice with a Galangal cocktail sauce and a house mignonette. It was so good. Along comes the Roasted Bone Marrow. When ordering was not sure how I was gonna feel eating this but, OMG! It was topped with a Chimichurri sauce and crunchy butter bits. It was served with a small side of salad and some toasted sliced baguette. It was a melt in your mouth and full of rich flavors. I slathered my toast with the marrow I scooped out. It was so good I wanted more! That salad that was served on that platter was also flavored well. So far so good. For the main meal ordered the Lemongrass Beef, Garlic Noodles and the Satay sticks. Good again came out fairly quick. All food was visually pleasing to the eyes. My steak was tender, flavorful and sooooo delicious. It was served with Garlic Frites. Portions were very generous. The Gaelic noodles were very tasty and I loved the texture of the noodles. They were firm and chewy. Mixed with Bok Choy, Mushrooms, Bean sprouts and seasoned so well. It was very addicting. The Chicken Satay was grilled and served with a spicy peanut sauce. It was good but not something I would order again. After dinner had to try dessert. Ordered the Ube Brûlée. This was also a winner! Warm Ube bread pudding topped with coconut flakes , edible flowers and something else. Forgive my forgetfulness. Trust me, it was delicious. Our server Miguel was outstanding. He was so attentive, helpful and assuring of our selections. He just made our meal more enjoyable. Thank you Miguel! I will be back, I've heard brunch is a must! Go and have a meal there, I don't think you'll be disappointed! read more

Yikes! This place took a turn. I came today with friends for Brunch. There was a large party so there was no Brunch, there was lunch or dinner. That was fine. We ordered our food and waited, then waited, and finally the roti appetizers came. Those were good, I was excited from there for what was to come. I ordered an orange juice, it was fermented...rotten! The smell was so strong. I don't blame the server but that smell was not subtle. I ordered the coconut shrimp fried rice, there was no coconut. No hint of coconut, or salt! There was no hint of anything, I could have ate air. Also the plate came with large uncooked pieces of cabbage all over, I had to pick them out. I also got the stir fried eggplant, it was straight heat again no salt. The food came for other people in my party almost an hour after waiting. We were the only ones at the time besides the party. Then an hour later they came and said 2 of the things we ordered were 86d. An hour to realize something was not available. Our server did the best he could but what an unfortunate experience. I have no good reason to come back. read more
Food was amazing, service was great as well and food was very flavorful and came out pretty quick. We did come for brunch and it wasn't that busy but nonetheless parking is great as well there is more than enough when wanting to come to straits. It is a Singapore based menu so everything was packed with a lot of flavor and unique. Atmosphere was very welcoming pair with great lighting and local vibe. All in all it was an incredible experience and I look forward to coming back and trying different things on their menu. read more

Was attending a show in the neighborhood, so we decided to test out Straits- and boy am happy we did! Food was so flavorful, staff was wonderfully attentive ( granted I think were the only ones there eating at 4pm...) and the ambience fun and upbeat. I can easily see this being a trendy night place to go eat. I had the Laksa Noodle Soup which had just the right amount of heat and tons of flavor! My friend had the Hainan Chicken with its trio of sauces and he was also delighted. I get the youthful vibe may not be for everyone but certainly a place I recommend to try! read more
