You have to write down the full Credit Card number, the expiration date, and even the CVV on what looks like a badly photocopied piece of paper. When we had to change the card on file, we had to actually go to the office and complete another dodgy looking form, rather do it online, securely, through a website or an app. Surely having to write down your entire Credit Card number with expiration date and CVV is not PCI compliant (and yet I did it anyway). Two, they raised our rate immediately after signing up and then they raised it again shortly after that. We hadn't even had the unit for one year. Our original rate was $47/month when we joined in May, in July it was raised to $59/month, and then in November it was $65/month. Three, we attempted to access our storage unit outside of office hours a few times but the pin pad to get into the building was broken more often than it worked. The last time we went, our car was full of stuff but couldn't get in (again). This was deal breaker for us. Other things that were annoying: there is no dedicated parking, only street parking. The office and lobby area wreak of cigarette smoke. The storage unit itself was fine, but the floor was unfinished. When we went to say we were moving out, there were no questions asked. Just a "what is your unit number?" and "sign here" and "here's your move out receipt". Like ok, bye?

The Lock Up has made several significant upgrades since they bought it a couple years ago: modern elevator in addition to the service elevator, a solid cement ramp to make the building fully accessible, and keycode entry so you can have access on evenings and weekends (it isn't 24/7 though). Although prices have increased because of their improvements they have not been significant enough to make us search for alternatives. Staff is friendly and auto-pay is easy to set up.

1 Star -- Loyalty Apparently Comes With a Penalty…read more I am absolutely disgusted by the way Safeguard Self Storage treats long-term customers. I started renting my unit in September 2020 for $110 per month. Nearly six years later, after NEVER missing or being late on a payment, I received a letter casually informing me that my monthly charge is increasing to $657. Let that sink in. $657 a month for the SAME unit, on the SAME floor, with ZERO improvements, ZERO upgrades, and absolutely nothing different to justify this outrageous increase. Then comes the real slap in the face. This letter talks about how rent increases are only made "when absolutely necessary" and after "serious consideration" of customers facing economic hardship. Yet when I went online to price the EXACT SAME UNIT, I was quoted an introductory rate of $150 and a standard rate of only $319 after the promotion. So new customers pay $319... while loyal customers with perfect payment history are expected to pay $657? That's a $388 difference for literally the same space. This isn't "customer appreciation." It isn't "serious consideration." It feels like exploiting loyal renters because you assume moving out is too inconvenient. And the cherry on top? The letter warns about late fees and thanks me for my "continued patronage" -- as if I should feel grateful for being charged more than DOUBLE the advertised standard rate after years of on-time payments. Businesses love to talk about loyalty until it affects their profits. If you rent here, watch your rates closely. Apparently staying loyal just makes you a target for endless increases.

There's free parking behind the building. Pull in at Leland from Kedzie. If it's full, street parking on Kedzie is easy using the Park Chicago app. You must use coins. No credit cards. They change dollars to coins in the dry cleaner's office. Fifty cents dried a whole load for me and I was out in in less than 40 minutes including folding time. I didn't need to wash. Bring headphones or something to read. Drink and snack machines. Air conditioned! Laundry soap might be sold in the office. I didn't see a machine for soap that was in service. Clean location and friendly staff!

However, there is one woman who on three separate occasions tries to overcharge me for service. She has charged me blanket pricing for clothes, told me I'm not meeting minimums for the pounds (when I'm double or triple), and has charged me more than the posted sign and a coworker gave me a refund for the overages. Today, I brought in 20+ pounds between blankets and clothing. She said I didn't meet the minimum for either so tried to charge blanket pricing for all. I wish there was consistency across the board. It's a nice place otherwise.
