I'm actually surprised this restaurant has such high reviews, I'm from Murrells inlet, sc. I'd like to think I know good seafood. We had the Cajun boil for one, a crab cake sandwich and hush puppies. The hush puppies were great, the crab cake sandwich was good, good fries and she loved the dill sauce. The Cajun boil..... not so much. It was edible but had very little flavor. The shrimp were over cooked and potatoes were plain, like they were cooked in just water, sausage....... Ok but also not flavor. Being on a beach town you would think the seafood would be great. Have been coming to Tybee for many years and have always frequented StingRay's. This time, however, one of our main entrees (fried oysters) was completely over fried to the point of being burnt and inedible. The server checked with the manager and came back with the only response of "sorry". The manager didn't even have the backbone to come to our table to tell us himself. We were only spending about $250 in the restaurant for our meal. Guess it was too much to expect the main entrees (at ~$30 a pop) to be properly cooked and actually suitable for consumption. When leaving I passed the manager and told him that he needed to eat the overcooked oysters, and he didn't respond. I get that sometimes problems happen, but what counts is how the problem is addressed. This was a complete punt. That's ok though, cause in the long term we will cost them much more than one replacement plate of fried oysters. We routinely come to Tybee and will never patron StingRay's again. Will also share our experience with our host so she can stop recommending them to other guests and relay our experience. They get the tourist traffic that doesn't know any better, but there are too many other actual quality options in the area. Never again. read more

I arrived at Sting Ray's Seafood at about 3:30 on Saturday afternoon after several hours at the beach, definitely hungry. I'm an adventurous eater so when I saw a soft shell crab sandwich on the menu I knew I had to try it. My friendly and attentive server, Angela, arrived nearly immediately after I was seated, took my drink order, and promptly returned asking if I had any questions. I asked about the sandwich and if you do indeed eat the whole crab, to which she answered yes, explained how it was cooked, and warned it had a strong seafood flavor. I love seafood of all types, so I enthusiastly ordered it. I swear that less than 5 minutes passed and my sandwich arrived, in all it's leggy glory! It does indeed have a strong flavor, accentuated by its very light but well seasoned batter, and hot, albeit a bit greasy (but very welcome) nicely seasoned crinkle fries. Angela and Heather are the best!! Stingray's is, hands down, the freshest, best-tasting sea food on the whole island.

There's a lot of seafood places on Tybee Island and StingRay's is the better than the others. The food is a bit pricey but that's because it's in a touristy beach location. Beers are cold, service is quick and sometimes even friendly and the food is good. If you order boiled shrimp, ask for seasoning on the side. They don't boil the shrimp with seasoning - they sprinkle it on afterwards. When you peel the shrimp, all the seasoning goes in the bucket with the shell. Add your side of seasoning to your peeled shrimp or add to your butter. Warning - do not use the bathroom on the lower deck. It should be condemned. Go inside if you need a potty break. You will thank me for this warning! read more

We loved the food here. We had Ahi Tuna that was as fresh as it gets. We also had shrimp tacos. They were very flavorful and had large shrimp. My husband had a fried scallop plate. He said there must of been 20 scallops on it. He couldn't finish his plate. Wow! This was the best, the very best place out of all of Tybee for service. We didn't have to wait on drink refills. Big crab girl so was very happy to have seafood in general. The crab was so soft alongside the potatoes, shrimp, and sausage. They season it pretty well but I usually like extra spice so I was dipping it in hot sauce lol. I wish I took a picture but the wait ended up being almost an hour instead of 30mins so was hungry but can't say that I didn't leave satisfied! Wow so we went here tonight paid over 100 dollars for 2 adults and one child to eat my mom ordered fried oysters and when she bit into one it was completely raw and still slime... we told a female waitress first and she said all we can do is take those that's on your plate and go drop them back in the grease so in my mind that was a defient red flag that any restaurant would take food off of your plate that youve been eating In and drop it back into a grease Fryer that there cooking all the food that's been seved to other people. OUR server finally came over we showed them to him and he was like oh wow I'm gonna go get you some more I will be right back. We sat and sat and he never came back so I approached the manager and he didn't even want to hear it even after we showed them to him and our server said that he didn't tell us he was bringing more.. Ate there and ordered the steamed platter. Mussels were so small you could hardly see them. Clams were so small you could hardly see them.. They should NEVER have been served. this was on September 29 and I am still thinking about this. I wanted to call and get my money back. I think they should never ever ever have served that seafood. and then on top of that my friend ordered shrimp and it was rubbery. She wouldn't eat any of it. Luckily the one part of my meal was OK and that was the shrimp and I gave her my shrimp. I paid $155 and the only part of the meal that was good was some of my steamed shrimp. We had heard good things about Stingray's and the eating were decent - plus they had a sign on the building that said they were voted the "best placed for seafood." It was located right next door to our beach rental, so we decided to give it a try. There was nine of us, so the wait was roughly an hour for dinner. Right away we noticed that they were understaffed. The staff looked stressed and overwhelmed. Service was extremely slow, but recognizing that they were understaffed, we were really patient throughout the night. We were extremely disappointed with our meals. The expectations were much higher, but the food was below average at best. I had the Mahi Mahi Sandwich. I asked for it plain and not blackened. It came out blackened. The fish was dry and barely warm. The bun was rock hard and had mold on it. The other meals we ordered included, Steamed Shrimp, Low Country Boil, and Chicken Fingers and a few other items. The consensus was that the food was below average. Overall a disappointment, but our server was good and she did her best. Definitely out of her control. read more

After a long drive from NC we were excited for a good meal. Wait was 40 minutes but that wasn't a big deal for us. Sat down and ordered drinks and an app plus our meal. App arrived. I'm a little late posting this review, and I promised them that I would share my experience. If you follow my reviews, you have read what I wrote about a dinner at "The Original Crab Shack" in Tybee Island the night before we ate here. We were the first in line when they opened (we were staying at the motel across the street), and we were seated promptly. After we got our menus, we were greeted by two servers - actually, I later learned that it was the manager and a trainee. I told them about our bad experience from the previous evening, and the manager assured us that it would be better here. I also jokingly told her that I was going to become "Karen with a p*nis" and Yelp the crap out of the Crab Shack. (I did.) she got a kick out of that. (Perhaps I should clarify this review by saying this is a very informal restaurant. Outdoor dining on a multi-level patio, and everybody is enjoying adult beverages and having a good time. My dining partner chose to stick with water, but I was still craving sweet tea. Which I got. In a Styrofoam cup marked "Karen with a P*nis". The food was delicious. Since we ordered the fried platter for two, we did not get any appetizers. We were planning to leave Tybee Island after lunch, and didn't want to be too full. The server was attentive without being invasive. She kept my tea refilled. (actually, if she was a trainee, I couldn't help but wonder if they hired her from another local seafood restaurant. She obviously knew what she was doing, and how to do it.) When we were getting ready for the check, she came up and asked "I hope you don't think this is a personal question, but what is your T-shirt size?" I replied "Lard-a$$". (XL). And she brought me a complementary T-shirt. So - if you got this far, you might think I was compensated for this review. But T-shirt or no T-shirt, I would've said the same thing. Both my dining partner and I were impressed, and we would certainly come back again. This was a wonderful conclusion to our trip, and we left the Savannah/Tybee Island area very happy. read more

The low country boil was good but the shrimp could have more seasoning- it wasn't worked in well enough. The sausage was on point though. The scallops in the fisherman's platter was amazing. Good Crabs, mediocre service and ambience... We are in town visiting; wanted some good seafood. The menu at Sting Rays looked awesome compared to others, and had our experience held up well would have been back more than once during our stay...sadly we likely won't be returning. When we arrived we were seated near the kitchen... a very unappetizing location, as there was no door so we faced what seemed to be a "slop room" ; servers clearing off plates and waiting around for hot food off the line. We were greeted by a friendly but rushed server, who was a bit distracted during our service with visitors. The first thing we ordered were hush puppies, they were not good. They tasted previously frozen, were room temp and a bit stale; and were not in fact hush puppies at all but corn fritters. Then one of us ordered gumbo and the other two had the snow crab leg dinner. Our food was delivered by a food runner; when she gave us our crab plates there wasn't melted butter, when we asked for some she growled "I'll get your server". Unpleasant. The Gumbo was good and came in a reasonable portion. Crabs were great! They were perfectly steamed; the seasoning that came standard seemed to be a cheesy garlic powder mixed with old bay. Our dinner was supposed to be 1.5 pounds; but they were very generous! Each of our plates came with 4 huge clusters. The crab meat came apart nicely and was delicious. Service was very good, but sadly could not make up for the horrible food. One of the items we got was a fried seafood platter for $53. To say it was overpriced for poorly cooked food is an understatement. The bran cake was almost black in color and heavily seasoned. The scallops were so black they looked like lumps of coal. The shrimp were so overcooked they were not edible at all and the oysters were mushy. Good were the fries, hush puppies and the fish! Stick with those!! We visited mid-week in the late afternoon and told it would be a 40 minute wait for outside seating. No problem, we had a drink and waited. When our names were called they stated it is an hour wait from the time you are seated to get your food...This information would have been good to know when we checked in. This was shared as we were taken to an inside table, which would not work for various reasons in the summer of 2020. Nobody was at host stand when we arrived so my family asked a waitress where to sit, she helped them out & within 3 minutes my mother was reprimanded by the jerk for seating herself.
