We came on a Saturday night at 6 and the wait for 3 was 30-45 mins. (2 adults and a 10 month old) No problem! I had to go to the bathroom and when I walked thru the restaurant there were a lot of empty tables. Odd that there would be a wait. There was a table for 4 near the front door, without a reserved sign on it, and it was empty the entire time we waited. We were finally seated and they put us at a table for two. Meanwhile, that table for 4 was still empty. I'm not sure if you've ever spent time with a 10 month old, but clearly the hostess hasn't. They are grabby and want to explore everything they can possibly get their hands on, including hot plates on a table. Luckily, our server knew this and when a large party in the restaurant left, she brought us one of the 2 person tables they'd been using. Fortunately it also aligned with when our food was coming out so we didn't have to worry about our baby burning her hands on the plates put down on our table with a "they're hot" warning. The kitchen was really slow. I'm not sure if they were backed up, but with the amount of empty tables, they really shouldn't have been. It took at least 20 minutes for us to get our appetizer after we ordered it, which was the chile verde fries. Luckily, all of the food made up for the previous paragraphs and is the reason for 4 stars instead of 3. The Chile verde fries were so good! Not too spicy, a great balance of fries, meat, sauce, and cheese. The egg was a nice touch and made the dish feel like chilequilles with fries instead of chips. We also ordered a 3 meat plate with pulled pork, brisket, and tri tip. The pulled pork was pretty standard. The brisket was falling apart delicious and I liked that it didn't have a ton of fat in it. It was interesting that the tri tip had grill marks on it, I don't think I've ever seen that before, but it was very soft and delicious as well. For our sides we got the collard greens and mac and cheese. The collards were very high in vinegar, something we aren't used to, but my husband enjoyed them. The mac and cheese was really good! You can tell they use fresh cheeses as opposed to velveta. The garlic bread was good and really flavorful, but I do wonder why other tables around us seemed to get 2 slices per person and we got 2 slices total. Not a big deal tho, just found it odd. Overall, we really liked Steve's and will be back, as well as recommend it to people. We'll just make sure to have a reservation before we go, and maybe make it for a party of 4 to ensure we get a good sized table. read more

First time at Steve's after hearing raving reviews for years. Seriously, what took me so long? For some reason I thought the inside was larger but it is a cozy place, large enough for a group of two. Ordered a shareable platter which on the menu, I think it states for 3-4 but dang. I think it could feed *at least* 5-6. I would def recommend if ya'll can agree on the sides. I love Mac n cheese, I mean who doesn't, but if you're that one weirdo than opt for something else. The Mac isn't the best I've had but it's worth a try. The meats are delicious, except for the chicken. For some reason I wasn't really impressed with the chicken. Service was pretty good and easy parking in the back. My best friend recommended that we meet here to watch one of the Mexico games, it was my first time here and sadly my last time because of an incident that was very unfair and rude! We had reservations for 6PM and we were going to be seated at a table in the main dining area (no TV's in this area btw!) so we asked to be sat in the bar area so we can watch the game. I am happy they accommodated us with this, but the bar area was pretty empty still. There was lots of open tables. We got sat at a table with one of the chairs was facing the wall (in other words whoever sat here could not watch or see the TV). There was a table for 4 next to us that was empty for about 20 mins already, so we asked the waitress if we can be moved there instead it was literally right next to us. Her responses were: 1) that is for a reservation, and I let her know we also had a reservation. To that she replied but 2) You are a party of 2 and that's for a party of 4 ONLY. About 10 minutes later, a couple (2 people) that were sitting at a table for 2 on the other side of the bar area, got up and moved to the table for 4 that we requested. The waitress and staff saw this and nobody told them anything. I figured it out quickly that she was an off-duty employee so maybe that's why, but that is still very very wrong. I am a BIG tipper when I feel that the service was good, in this case it was not but I still left her $5. After this interaction with her, there was no way I would have tipped her more than that. We got the Rib eye, baby back ribs, tri top and brisket. The ribs came out a little dry. But they immediately replaced them, which I thought was a great customer service. The waitress was very informative breaking down the menu. We got a total of six sides, just wanting to try everything... by far. The best side was their fries. My sister recently took me to Steve's barbecue in Whittier for my birthday. There's street parking and alley parking. I almost missed the restaurant because it looks like it's part of an office building. I was very surprised when I walked in because I love how cozy, warm and inviting it is. They use lots of browns and faux leather pillows with nice padded bench seating. They also have a small bar towards the back of the restaurant with top tables. I was pleasantly surprised how pretty it was inside. Our waitress and busser were very friendly. We got there an hour before they closed and unfortunately missed out on the brisket. I definitely need to come back because that was what I came for. We ended up with a combination plate of barbecue and everything including the sides were delicious. In addition, we ordered a cocktail and a mocktail, and both were made fantastic. The waitress brought out a delicious bread pudding, dessert for my birthday and it was amazing. Steve's BBQ is a lot nicer inside than it looks from the storefront. It certainly had me fooled. The inside is roomy and modern. In fact, there's a sizable bar in the back if you're just looking to grab a drink. We started off with an order of buffalo wings ($18). These were quite good. And quite substantial. The chicken was tender with a crispy exterior - not too bread-y per my preference. In fact, the chicken had a really nice, smokey taste. Delish. I ordered the chicken BLT ($21) with a side of fries. The sandwich comes with a grilled, boneless chicken breast, topped with bacon, lettuce + tomato on a fresh ciabatta. The chicken breast itself was succulent. It had good flavor and was the star of the show, however it definitely needed a better vessel than the ciabatta bread which subsequently succumbed to all the meat juices and crumpled apart. Tragic. The heat from the chicken breast also did a number to the lettuce (wilt city) and tomato. It was good, but then it wasn't. The BBQ Burger ($27) was good-ish. You get a half pound cheeseburger topped with pulled pork, onion rings, pickles, garlic aioli & bbq sauce on a brioche bun. It's a good burger, but could have stood without the pulled pork. Is it worth $27? Idk. The fries, on the hand, were delicious. I'd love to come back to try any of their BBQ entrees. The steep prices are a slight deterrent, especially for casual weeknight dinner. Steve's BBQ is a good dinner option for Uptown Whittier especially since so many of the nicer dining options places have close in recent times. read more

She was on top of the refills which I liked. There are lots of tables and a bar for a wonderful evening to have bbq. It was delicious. Steve's Bar-B-Q - Whittier Sometimes the best meals are the ones you don't plan. I drove to Whittier for a different sandwich spot, but the crowd and wait time forced a pivot. A quick Yelp search led me to Steve's Bar-B-Q, and what followed was a reminder of why good barbecue is always worth the detour. I gotta to go order of the tri-tip sandwich, brisket tacos, and a side of baked beans--a lineup that quickly reveals whether a barbecue joint knows what it's doing. Steve's ABSOLUTELY does! The tri-tip sandwich was the standout. Exceptionally tender meat, well-seasoned, and cooked with restraint--no over-smoking, no masking flavors. The bread was pillowy soft and complemented the tri-tip rather than competing with it. Frankly, the sandwich didn't need sauce, which is the highest compliment you can give barbecue. That said, the sauce adds a layered depth that takes it from excellent to memorable. The sandwich got better with every bite and the last bite just made me sad it was over. This is the kind of sandwich you'd willingly drive out of your way for. The brisket tacos deserve special attention. The brisket itself was rich, properly cared for --moist without being fatty. What elevated the tacos was the balance: the pickled onions and pickled jalapeños provided acidity and brightness that cut through the smokiness of the meat, creating contrast instead of overpowering it. A light crema tied everything together, adding just enough richness to round out each bite. It's a thoughtful, well-composed taco--proof that barbecue doesn't need to be heavy to be satisfying. The baked beans were far from an afterthought. Complex and deeply flavored, with a balance of sweet, savory, and subtle heat, plus smoky bacon throughout. These are beans made by someone who actually cares about sides. The only thing I regret is skipping the slaw--but that just guarantees a return visit. Sooner than later. BBQ was more fatty than what we're used to and the seasoning was just ok. The steamed veggies tasted like cafeteria food and had no seasoning whatsoever.
