    Lamb barbacoa
    Nick C.

This marvel of a restaurant just recently opened in my childhood neighborhood and I couldn't be happier for the community. The diversity in flavors and tradition in preparation is unmatched by anything in the area. The staff was incredibly friendly and offered pro tips and suggestions for ordering and consuming. We were waited on deftly and never wanted for anything. I highly suggest the lamb barbacoa (cabeza) and you should absolutely get the flautas. The huitlacoche quesataco is incredible and should be tried by all! All of their salsas have their own unique flavor and offer so much to the dishes they're intended for. Can't wait to come back and pig (lamb) out again!

    Agua de tamarindo - DELICIOUS!

I returned to try more things. The last couple visits I've tried their tacos. I've tried tacos de cabeza, pancita, asada and a quesataco de barbacoa (lamb). It was hit or miss, honestly. My least favorites were the cabeza and asada. The cabeza had a really strong game flavor. It almost tasted like blood or like ... bone marrow. I didn't enjoy it. The asada was kind of tough and had a strong beef flavor. The pancita was maybe my favorite. I liked that it was tender and a little bit sweet. I'll say that by itself it had an off aftertaste I didn't really like but with onion, cilantro, lime and salsa it was very good. It covered the aftertaste. The quesataco de barbacoa was excellent. It was a nice big size. I loved the crispy cheese. The barbacoa was very tender and juicy with great flavor. Oh, I also had an agua fresca de tamarindo and that was EXCELLENT. It was refreshing, made fresh, tart and sweet but not overly sweet. Perfect drink. I do still intend on returning to try more things. Their menu is unique for sure and I appreciate their food is fresh and I can tell their food is the real deal. I'm just not a fan of those very gamey flavors some of the meats have. Oh! I LOVE their consomé with the garbanzo beans. It's DELICIOUS and hot.

Wow! That's the first word that comes to mine when I think about Aquí Es Texcoco. this restaurant is a gem to Whittier and has only been around for a few months. my boyfriend and I came in very hungry and left very satisfied. We ordered enough food for a small family four but it was just us two. The service was immediate and the place was empty. The environment was great for family's and very welcoming.

    Barbacoa enchiladas in mole sauce

I heard about Aqui es Texcoco listening to a podcast with Jonathan Gold, where he raved about the restorative effects of the restaurant's lamb barbacoa. So I made the drive out from Whittier to this new-ish branch of the small restaurant chain for a comforting lunch on a gloomy, rainy SoCal Friday. This restaurant is large with plenty of seats, suitable for large groups and parties. Since I was only picking up to-go, I immediately dove into the menu looking for something to bring home and share with my wife. I ordered two items: the barbacoa enchilada in mole sauce and one quesataco with huitlacoche. Both were delicious and survived the ride home, though I imaging the quesataco would be better if eaten at the restaurant before it loses its crunch. The enchiladas were delicious in the mole, and I can't imagine having the enchiladas in any other way. If I had to order again, however, I probably would want to sit down in the restaurant and have the family size barbacoa or the quail, which look great in photos!

    Costilla, cabeza yum :)

All I got to say is I've never heard of a Mexican place where they don't serve alcohol. Food was ok, service not the best.

Best barbacoa de borrego in town. The meat is juicy and savory. The tortillas are made just right and the horchata is really refreshing!

This place instantly became one of my favorites after just one visit. From the moment you walk in, the whole vibe hits you--the moody, neon-lit ambiance sets the tone perfectly. It feels elevated, a little edgy, and honestly just the kind of spot you want to spend your night at. The music is curated so well. Not too loud, not too mellow--just the right balance where you can vibe, have a conversation, and still feel the energy of the room. You can tell they actually care about the experience, not just throwing a playlist together. Now let's talk about the drinks... because that's really where they shine. Every cocktail feels intentional and crafted with care. You can taste the quality immediately--nothing watered down, nothing basic. They have a really cool mix of classic cocktails and modern twists, and even the familiar drinks feel elevated. It's the kind of place where you want to try something new every round because you trust the bartenders know exactly what they're doing. Service was on point too. Friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. They took the time to explain drinks and made great recommendations, which made the whole experience even better. I came in not knowing what to expect, and left already planning my next visit. If you're in Uptown Whittier and looking for a spot with great energy, amazing cocktails, and a full vibe--The Vandalist is it. Thank me later

Our server was Ashley and she was so friendly and sweet! She answered all our questions and was very attentive to us throughout the dinner! She even refilled my hot water multiple times, which is SO RARE in a restaurant!!!! The food itself was delicious and had great portion sizes! The appetizers were great (calamari and caprese salad)! Good shareable portions for the table! For dinner, we ordered the short rib pappardelle, which was DELICIOUS and was a hit!!! There was more than enough to split among three people! I had the grilled salmon salad which had a good hefty portion of salmon that was perfectly grilled, on a huge bowl of greens! The restaurant gave my mom a complimentary canoli for her birthday too, which was awesome! Thank you so much for the great food and excellent service! My parents loved it and everyone had a great time.

We didn't get her name but she had glasses and septum nose piercing. She was more accommodating at then end but we were very off put at the beginning and it left a bad taste in our mouths. Our server at our table was the complete opposite. Very attentive and made the group less angry with our initial treatment. Wish I got her name to share. The desert and cocktails were nice but due to the service it did not make up for the overall experience. Desert: Tiramisu 4/5 - great flavor, ratio of cream was too much compared to cake portion Canolli 4/5 - duo flavors were nice and had a good shell with crunch Crème brûlée 2/5 - pistachio flavor was light and it's was almost too warm and liquidy. Cocktails overall some major hits and other misses. Sgroppino 5/5 - strong but with a great flavor profile Dragon fruit cocktail 2/5 - too light tasting, not much flavor or alcohol? Gave more juice Peach Bellini 4.5/5 - table side pour is nice touch and rest of bottle was nice. Syrup has a sourness but mixed in with Bellini and gelato and tasted just right. Melontini - 2.5/5 light, somewhat good flavor but nothing memorable. Ambience seems nice but it can be loud inside with open floor plan.

This had to be a special occasion to make the drive. Aaaand yes! It was still worth the drive. Still looked the way i remembered. Service was great as well. Christine was our waitress. She was attentive and sweet. Despite that my lobster tail took a while to come out ( and if it wasn't for Christine being so helpful and nice I'm sure this would be a totally different review) Everything was so delicious. Started off with the spicy edamame which I could literally drink the sauce they make them in. We also had the crab hand rolls. Those were so warm and tasty! Followed by the yummy rolls. Queen roll with the strawberry on top was my fav! Azabu crunchy roll had a perfect crunch and gives you a mouthful of deliciousness (2nd fav) Then the rock n roll rocked our world! That was a party in my mouth with all the flavors. (3rd fav) We got the keto roll and the only reason it was my least favorite is because we felt the cucumber overpowered the sushi and mango. Both me and my husband ate just what was in the inside of the cucumber it was way better. We didn't eat the cucumber. When the lobster finally came luckily it was worth the wait!!! I highly recommend the lobster tail! Full of flavor! The butter my flavoring was mouth watering. Truly enjoyed every bite! Last but not least our dessert. I ordered the chocolate cake roll! Wow!!! It truly hit the spot. Christine also brought a berry ice cream for the long wait of my lobster tail. It was so good! I thought I was full but it was so good I kept on eating it. This was a great way to celebrate my husband for Father's Day. Thank you Azabu's and Christine!

We then shared the Seafood Ceviche, which featured fresh fish, mango salsa, avocado, micro cilantro, leche de tigre, and macha sauce. It was definitely on the spicy side, so if you're sensitive to heat, I would recommend asking for the macha sauce to be removed or served on the side. The flavors were fresh, vibrant, and well balanced, with the avocado adding a nice creamy contrast to the spice. The presentation of the ceviche was especially well done and made the dish even more enjoyable. I paired my meal with a glass of Strev Moscato, while my husband enjoyed a 22 oz bottle of Asahi. The atmosphere was welcoming and made for a nice anniversary dinner. The presentation of the dishes was beautiful, and the overall vibe was perfect for a date night. After our visit, we noticed what appeared to be a billing error on our check. We called the restaurant, and the manager was very helpful and quickly resolved the issue by issuing a refund. Mistakes can happen anywhere, but I truly appreciated how professionally and promptly they handled the situation. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, appreciated the excellent customer service, and would happily return.
