We came for a bday. A solid choice to get together with friends and family. The ambiance is a perfect setting particularly if you have a lively bunch who enjoy conversation. Before our large group was seated, I went for a drink at the bar. Sitting at the bar, you've got a view of a TV's as well for the casual drink and sports update. The food is good, nice portions. Flavor and prep are just good, nothing exceptional or impressive. Salute to the kitchen on their plating, very photogenic presentations. If prices were based on the taste and quality alone, I'd say it's just a tad bit over, however I get the feeling you're also paying for the presentation as well. Made reservations to take my husband to dinner for Father's Day since we've not been to Azabu's in years now that we live in Long Beach. This had to be a special occasion to make the drive. Aaaand yes! It was still worth the drive. Still looked the way i remembered. Service was great as well. Christine was our waitress. She was attentive and sweet. Despite that my lobster tail took a while to come out ( and if it wasn't for Christine being so helpful and nice I'm sure this would be a totally different review) Everything was so delicious. Started off with the spicy edamame which I could literally drink the sauce they make them in. We also had the crab hand rolls. Those were so warm and tasty! Followed by the yummy rolls. Queen roll with the strawberry on top was my fav! Azabu crunchy roll had a perfect crunch and gives you a mouthful of deliciousness (2nd fav) Then the rock n roll rocked our world! That was a party in my mouth with all the flavors. (3rd fav) We got the keto roll and the only reason it was my least favorite is because we felt the cucumber overpowered the sushi and mango. Both me and my husband ate just what was in the inside of the cucumber it was way better. We didn't eat the cucumber. When the lobster finally came luckily it was worth the wait!!! I highly recommend the lobster tail! Full of flavor! The butter my flavoring was mouth watering. Truly enjoyed every bite! Last but not least our dessert. I ordered the chocolate cake roll! Wow!!! A very stylish Japanese restaurant in uptown Whittier. We came in for a Sunday late dinner and chose to sit at the counter as usual. They have a solid cocktail menu and decent choices of sake. We ordered bottle of cold sake and Mezcal old fashioned. Both were very tasty. But I did think the cocktails were priced a bit high for this neighborhood. For food we had spicy tuna crispy rice, spicy edamame, truffle oil toro tartare, salmon sashimi, king crab hand roll and a few orders of nigiri sushi. Prices aren't low but the quality is there so I personally think it's worth it. It's become the meetup spot with my girlfriend for the holiday season now, I guess! We ordered 6 items and they were all enjoyable. The toro tartare had one of the best tartare flavors I've had - quail egg, caviar and just a hint of truffle oil. The azabu crunch was so good - the nori wasn't soggy at all. The Fuji roll was just packed with fresh raw fish, their version of rainbow roll I guess but with more fish. Can't skip the Spanish octopus - so flavorful and soft. And omg the king crab hand roll was bomb. I first came to this place the first week they opened and the person making our sushi was so nice ! We sat at the sushi bar and they were quick with putting our sushi out for us. Since then I've been way too many times but for all the best reasons for happy hour, birthday celebration, new job celebration and life. The food is so fresh and delicious I always make sure to get the fried rice with chicken and an egg. Even if I'm full I take it to go! I am not sure what they put in that stuff but it's DELICIOUS! Azabu Sushi - Whittier, CA 1/2 (I docked half a star purely out of spite because I can't afford to eat here every day) I walked into Azabu expecting the usual Whittier sushi experience: decent fish, questionable rice, and a lingering fear that the "spicy tuna" might just be yesterday's salmon wearing hot sauce as war paint. Instead I was immediately hit with a vibe that says, "Yes, we know we're in a strip mall next to a boba place, but we're about to ruin you for grocery-store California rolls forever." Let's start with the Salmon Carpaccio (the flat pizza-looking thing in the photo). Imagine if salmon had a glow-up, went to Coachella, and came back wearing citrus ponzu as body glitter and microgreens as a flower crown. It's so pretty I almost felt bad eating it. Almost. Then I inhaled the entire plate in 45 seconds like a savage who'd never seen raw fish before. Zero regrets. The texture is silkier than my ex's lies. Next up: the Shrimp Gyoza in that dark, mysterious broth. These dumplings show up swimming in what I can only describe as "umami bathwater." One bite and I involuntarily whispered "oh daddy" -- which was awkward because I was on a date with my actual father. The wrappers have that perfect pan-seared crisp before collapsing into the sauce like they owe it money. I'd bathe in that broth if it weren't socially unacceptable (and if the staff weren't watching me like I'm one impulse away from grabbing a straw). Portions are annoyingly civilized -- translation: you'll want to order three of everything and then lie about being full so you look refined. Pro tip: don't. Just commit to the food coma. Your jeans will forgive you eventually. Service is ninja-level attentive without being obnoxious. Our server knew the menu like he personally caught the fish at 4 a.m. while doing CrossFit. When I asked what was good he just smirked and said "everything," which should've been arrogant but was 100% correct. Rude. Ambiance? It's dark, moody, and sexy in a way that makes you want to use chopsticks seductively even though you still hold them like a toddler with crayons. Only complaint: the bill. It arrives looking innocent, then you realize you just paid Beverly Hills prices in a city where the biggest landmark is a 24-hour donut shop. Worth it? Absolutely. Will I be eating cup noodles for the next week? Also yes. Verdict: Azabu is the sushi spot Whittier doesn't deserve but desperately needed. It was definitely on the spicy side, so if you're sensitive to heat, I would recommend asking for the macha sauce to be removed or served on the side. The snow crab handrolls were great as well, when I bit into the soy paper, the aroma from the sesame seeds enhanced the flavor of the crab and the sauce in the roll. I used Open Table to make our reservation and then immediately called to confirm and reiterate a very specific seating request. Most of the tables here are super close to each other. I called and spoke with Melody and made a very specific request for the corner booth that would afford some much desired privacy. The call didn't go very well and Melody seemed somewhat disinterested in being helpful. When we arrived, I spoke to the hostess and and asked for Melody. The hostess indicated that Melody went home. However, she confirmed that my seating request was ignored and that another party was given our table! I do realize that seating requests are subject to availability. However, this place was absolutely empty on a Thursday night. Why intentionally start our evening off badly? So, the new hostess offers us an awkward table in the corner. My first impression was not good. The blue velvet seat was literally covered in disgusting stains. I'm literally contemplating leaving at this point. However, I reluctantly decided to stay and not contribute to an awkward evening for my date. Our server was Rashad and he was cool. He was a nice guy and the service was good. His support team was very attentive and our water glasses will filled very often. My only negative was the staging of the delivery of our order. Pretty much, everything arrived at the same time. Took one of my very special lady friend here. She wanted an upscale Japanese/sushi restaurant and I turned to ChatGPT/AI to answer my request for the top upscale sushi restaurant in the area. This came up as the number one. The place is beautiful with great decor, good dim lighting, clean newer tables, and a sparkling eye catching bar. I made reservations so we were promptly seated by a friendly host and brought to our table. My friend requested the table next to that one instead, and they obliged happily. We were given menus and asked if we wanted any drinks. Ordered the cucumber/lime based Tequila drink "Kyuri Mint" and loved it. Started out with crispy Brussel sprouts as we looked at the menu to decide what we wanted to eat. I'm vegan and my surprise, there was a whole separate Vegan menu! My friend ordered the lobster roll and essentially licked the plate clean. The vegan rolls were good, I recall the server saying that the "spicy tuna" was sweet potato based.
