My family and I recently visited Kalaveeas in Montebello and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. The only positive part of our visit was the host staff. The gentlemen who greeted us were friendly, welcoming, helped us get seated quickly, and brought high chairs for our children. After being seated, however, we waited approximately 10-15 minutes before anyone acknowledged our table. When our server, Adriana, finally approached us, she did not introduce herself and came across as annoyed and uninterested in providing service. I actually had to ask her for her name. As for the food, my husband's lomo saltado was delicious and easily the best item we ordered. Unfortunately, my carne asada was extremely chewy and inedible. I barely touched it. The kids' meals (chicken nuggets and cheeseburger) were also disappointing, and neither child ate much of their food despite arriving hungry. The most uncomfortable part of the experience happened when it was time to pay. After receiving poor service throughout the meal, I left a small tip. Our server questioned the amount, so I increased it. She then questioned it again. I've never had a server confront me about a tip before. I explained that the service had been poor and that she appeared annoyed and disengaged during our entire visit. For a bill that exceeded $100, it was extremely disappointing that only one plate at the table was truly enjoyable. Between the poor service, disappointing food quality, and uncomfortable interaction regarding the tip, we will not be returning. I hope management addresses these issues because the restaurant has potential, but this experience fell far below expectations. read more

Lively, fun and cool decorated restaurant. Great open air space along with a double bar. Today was a margarita day and their flight of "Kadilac" margaritas was a great way to sample three different types. Sooo good! Lots of good, tasty looking options which made it tough to decide. Chose a couple of tacos with rice and beans. The tacos are larger than street size and full of your choice of protein. Fresh, homemade corn tortillas and full of flavor. We were a fairly large group (10+ people) that strolled in past 11pm hungry so I was impressed they were able to accommodate us immediately. The server took our orders efficiently and our food arrived quickly. I was also very pleased they were able to split the check by diner and we were not limited to X amount of cards per table. We came in for brunch buffet, this location is much smaller than the other one we usually visit. Same funky decor and very lively. The buffet items were good and I enjoyed the ceviches and pozole soup. Hubby enjoyed the street tacos so much. We had a few patron silver margaritas and mezcal cocktails. Kalaveras restaurants make the best Mexican cocktails and very strong. We liked the food but the service was extremely slow. We waited long time for our rounds of cocktails. They were apparently understaffed, I think it's understaffed at most of the restaurants these days. Still it was a relaxing brunch and we liked the drinks so much! read more

Originally when this location opened up it was the "go to spot" to get the night started however could be that new management took over but this location is not the same. Tips are "enforced" by including it on your bill no matter how big or small your group is. They also dont honor "reservations" that is an option when booking through yelp. Upon arrival i let the waiter know i had a reservation i was told i still had to wait 45 minutes and said yelp is inaccurate which doesnt make sense why offer something your not going to honor read more

The happy hour wings, however, were overly dipped in buffalo sauce the flavor was overbearing and felt heavy-handed rather than balanced. Came in around 3/4 pm on a Saturday, it wasn't packed but I was immediately put off by their restrooms looking like dive bar restrooms. Luckily our server Claudia was really attentive and on top of it. The food was also pretty delicious. Didn't love the fact that a cocktail is 14$ but if you want a martini it's a 3$ upcharge, also the bartender was really rude when I asked for more olive juice, she had an incredibly off putting attitude to a simple request... Worst customer service by server Paulina. My party of 6 waited over 40 minutes for 3 cups of water . Everyone's order was wrong, both drinks and food. We had 2 drinks from the bar menu, she brings random drinks, 1 Michelada meant a beer, slushy cucumber margarita meant a Jalapeño drink. She brought the same soda flavor for everyone no matter what they originally ordered. We had 2 teens with request for no avocado on their food. Both plates had avocado and also brings a side of guacamole. No chips or salsa, the manager Edwin knew her mediocre service was an isssue. There was another table who was receiving the same service and was speaking with him right next to our table. I waited to speak with him to let him know that the entire party had finished their food and yet we were waiting for 5 tacos with only meat to come back out because this incompetent server placed the order for the tacos with only guacamole. When she allowed her self to be called over to fix the order she responded that there must of been miscommunication on our end. My teen is allergic to guacamole theres no way she ordered wrong, the server doesn't possess the skills to listen and input correctly. My teen never got her food. Edwin the manager wanted to give us a free dessert as if that would make up for the horrible service. The server Paulina responded with no accountability wasting food, customers time and patience. We were so glad they were open on Monday. Almost everything is closed in Uptown Whittier and we wanted to stay local. We had a couple of drinks each and chips and salsa. No dinner or appetizers this time and there was no pressure or guilt for not ordering. Our bartender Junior was excellent! He was very attentive and friendly, he even started dancing to a good song. This place was low key trash. Ceviche de camarón was RAW, not marinated at all!!!! Tacos de carnitas was boiled pork (not crisped) with some kinda of spice that tasted off. Expresso Martini was made with no expresso cuz they didn't have an Expresso machine so it tasted like straight up alcohol. I live in Uptown Whittier and decided to finally try this place. It always looked full and it has a patio. Today at lunch, not very many people. Was able to sit anywhere on the patio which was great. Was given a menu but not a lunch menu. When the waitress finally came over, she asked me what I would like to drink. I told her an iced tea with lemon. She said they only had the sweetened raspberry tea because they ran out of tea bags. I'm not a soda drinker so I ordered a water with lemon. Then I had to ask her for the lunch menu. She saw I didn't have one, only the regular menu. She gave me the one in her hand. It took awhile to get my water, and I had to ask for chips and salsa, because I guess they don't hand them out unless you request them. I ordered my food the two taco lunch combo. It looked good, however, the food was pretty bland. Even adding the salsa really didn't help. Also the hard taco shells looked like the kind you can get ordering tacos at Taco Bell. Lastly, when getting the check, I noticed that they add an automatic charge if you pay with a credit card. Even though it wasn't much, I paid with cash to avoid that. I usually give places two chances before I don't return. However, I'll probably not return. I know other Mexican restaurants in Uptown that are much better. read more

I came in with my boyfriend for bottomless mimosas. At first the vibe and music was cool, but then we had to wait longer than expected for a refill on the 2nd mimosa. Instead of waiting around with empty glasses, we asked to change the order from 'bottomless mimosas' to a 'mimosa flight' so that we can just be served the mimosas right away and then leave. We even offered that they make us only 3 out of the 4 listed mimosas for the mimosa flight since we had already drank 1 glass of champagne with orange juice. They did not want to accommodate us even though they provided poor customer service & despite us still trying to give them an opportunity to make things right. They wanted to charge us for 2 mimosas AND the mimosa flight because of the amount of orange juice that was poured into the juice carafe that was meant to be used for the bottomless mimosas!!! So they were hard up on charging us $20 for essentially 2 small glasses of orange juice. We opted to just pay for our 2 mimosas and leave.
