Meals like this reminds me why I need to come here more often. One of the most exceptional meals and stellar service my family and I have had in a while. Lydia our waitress and her team were phenomenal and their attention and hospitality definitely elevated our dining experience. I lost count as to how many times they cleaned our table and changed our plates. Manager also went around the room checking on each table, he even lead the saxophonist/ musician of the night to each birthday table serenading the special guest to a song. Now about the food! Signatures here are the peppered steak (flown in from Chicago), prime rib (better than Lawry's!) and the sea bass ala Ben (decadently delicious). Yes we got one of each and then some. My personal favorite was the prime rib eye cap (8oz at mkt price, currently $125) and it was cooked to perfection (medium)...completely devoured. Another must that's not on the menu are their soufflés (Grand Marnier and chocolate) which we had each...and completely inhaled. My family and I have had our fair share of fine dining meals including such places like The French Laundry and I must say that the level of service tonight was reminiscent of that caliber without the stuffiness. Let me just say, this place was worth, every dollar! Inside: we went here for our grandmothers 90th. She's been here plenty of times and it was worth, every dollar. It almost feels like a diamond in the ruff! You wouldn't thing a place like this would be here. As soon as you walk in, BEAUTIFUL in side! Perfect low lighting and music playing! We were served complimentary bread which had sourdough slices, spicy flat crackers and sesame sticks. Have to say I was genuinely pleased for the generous bread basket. AND our server surprised us with additional slices of hot garlicky cheese bread TOO! So yummy. Appetizers: calamari - crispy with two sauces ( Hubby got this.) Wedge salad ( Two of us got this.) Chopped salad ( I got this.) Entrees: Two of us got the ribeye Steak w choice of rice pilaf, mashed or baked potatoes, ( veg included tonight was broccoli.) Another got the filet mignon.( He enjoyed it) I got the Sea Bass. It was the BEST sea bass I've had .. ever! It was Parmesan crusted and perfectly cooked. I'm getting this every time I come here! I previously reviewed this spot 17 years ago(!) and my impression remains unchanged. Classic old school steakhouse dining at its finest. Like the previous visit, I went during DineLA and brought a first time guest. She was excited to try it since I've been talking it up and enjoyed it as much as I did. DineLA is a standout bargain. The bread basket with the sourdough bread and chili crisp crackers was a great start. The calamari with the lemon butter and marinara was done right and the choice of two sauces a bonus. The cheese bread arrived just before our food, a delicious precursor. Pepper steak topped with the onion bacon and pepper topping was perfection, mashed potatoes and broccoli the perfect pairing with broccoli cooked just right, still retaining some crispness. My friend had the rib eye and crispy onions and was equally enamored. The lemon tart was the finale. I took some of the filet home and even leftover, it didn't lose anything. Although we didn't order anything made tableside we saw Steve prepare a Baked Alaska at a nearby table. He passed our table later to check on us and we enjoyed a nice conversation with him. That's a nice touch when the manager stops by and chats for a bit. Service was well paced and our server was friendly and engaging. Another day, another first time visit to an iconic spot, thanks to DineLA. Dal Rae is a classic retro steakhouse, opened in 1951, moved to its current location in 1958. Of course I've long known about it, but it's a bit of a shlep from my home; we mostly do local-ish places for DineLA. But when we saw their famous Pepper Steak was on the DineLA menu (perhaps for the first time?), we made the shlep. Dal Rae is on Washington Blvd, a Jack in the Box away from the corner of Rosemead Blvd. Their parking lot is valet only. We found street parking less than a block away, but neither Rosemead or Washington have street parking--too busy! The restaurant has 2 enclosed patios that let in a little light, a bar area that serves the full menu and has a piano, and the dining room, all with mid-century design/lighting. As AARP members, we prefer an early-bird dinner; Dal Rae starts theirs at 3:30 weekdays. 4:00 weekends. The lighting was brighter than expected; I was prepared to use a flashlight. They dimmed the lights later on. The hostess was very friendly; we had to wait a sec to be seated because a regular "demanded" a hug from her while leaving. It became clear during our visit there are a lot of regulars as well as long-time staffers. The dining room is a mix of tables and classic booths. The DineLA dinner menu has 3 courses with 3-4 options for each. Here's what we got: 1) Bread basket with warm and soft sourdough (?), spicy flat bread and packaged bread sticks. 2) First course--Hearts of romaine Caesar salad and Fried calamari. The salad was an untossed Caesar; the Caesar on the regular menu for two is prepared tableside. Also note the Hearts of romaine salad on the regular menu is not a Caesar; it has avocado, candied walnuts and blue cheese. The calamari were nice, lightly battered served with lemon butter (delish) and spicy marinara (fine but not spicy). 3) Entree--we both got the famous Dal Rae Pepper Filet Mignon. Other choices were Chilean sea bass, a boneless ribeye and spaghetti with lobster. The Pepper Steak preparation is also available on the regular menu as a Prime New York (perhaps the most popular) and, on the lunch menu, a "Poor Man's Pepper Steak" ground sirloin. The steak was well-prepared and very tender. The Pepper preparation consists of peppercorns, bacon and green onions in a sauce. It was very tasty and peppery, perhaps not as transcendent as touted. The fresh veggie of the day was broccoli, and we both chose steak fries as our carb, over mashed potatoes, rice pilaf or sliced tomatoes. We were too early for baked potatoes. 4) Ordered off the regular menu, my steakhouse go-to's--creamed spinach and creamed corn. Both were fab, classic and a great value at $10 each. The corn was au gratin and probably not fresh, but still fine. 5) Dessert--Decadent Chocolate Cake and New York Cheesecake with fresh berries. No complaints! I believe they do tableside Bananas Foster and maybe Cherries Jubilee, but I did not see them on the dessert menu. Our server was Julie and she was great. Overall a great introduction to another classic LA spot. The regular menu had many other classic dishes I'd like to try, and prices were very decent compared to other restaurants. My cousin talks very highly of this restaurant but it didn't really meet my expectations. We had a 5:30 reservation in the covered patio area but since we had an additional person, they moved us into a table in the bar. They started us off with warm bread and butter. Then right before the food actually comes, they give you another basket of bread but this time it's cheesey garlic bread. Every entree comes with veggies (not sure if it's seasonal/rotating but we all got broccoli) and a choice of side. I ordered the 10oz prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes. We also ordered the seabass. Baked potato is served tableside. My prime rib was a little too overcooked. The seabass was pretty good. It was a thick and tender piece. Now why I'm giving it 2 stars.. our server. I caught her rolling her eyes a couple times as she's walking away from our table. I didn't think we were being complicated but apparently she did. It was not giving "steakhouse service" (but what do you expect, it's Pico Rivera). The food was also mediocre at best. Everything was under seasoned. Quite frankly, it reminded us of "cruise food." The ambience is dark and loud. Not sure if the rest of the restaurant was just as dark since they seated us in the bar. The tables are very close together and there's not much walking space. They have several private rooms for parties. The waiting area was pretty packed after we got seated. The crowd is definitely on the older side. Primarily the food and mixing up our order which was very clearly expressed. Our steak orders were reversed. I asked for my bone in ribeye to be medium well and sliced and it came whole and medium. My wife's ribeye cap we asked for medium and can medium well and sliced. ‍At over $70 per steak they should get it right and I probably should've pointed it out it didn't want to start returning food over an hour into the experience. The table side Caesar act was cool and the labor is probably what made it $40 for two. My steak had almost no sear to it which is what I'm looking for in a ribeye. Baked potato was nothing special and garlic mash potatoes were very underwhelming and not very warm. Will I go back? Yes but I won't be investing in their red meat selections unless it's prime rib and that's still a maybe. Maybe lunch. Service was very good and accommodating just wish they got the order right. Since it was our first time they brought us a dessert to share which is getting them a 3 star instead or a two star. What a wonderful dinner! We brought friends with us that had never dined at Dal Rae! What a treat to see their reactions with the experiences! The food and service waa exceptional, as it always is. We came here to celebrate my 30th birthday on March 14th and had a 7:45pm reservation. despite how busy it was, everything flowed seamlessly from start to finish. Just a heads up, they only offer valet parking for $6, but it's quick and convenient and made arrival easy. One thing that really stood out was the ambiance. it felt different from most restaurants in the best way. It had an elevated, lively energy while still feeling comfortable and welcoming, striking that perfect balance between upscale and relaxed. We started with a pomegranate margarita, a Paloma, and some delicious cheese bread that set the tone for the night. For dinner, we ordered the surf and turf with a perfectly cooked medium rare filet mignon and Chilean sea bass that truly melts in your mouth. We also had the New York pepper steak cooked medium with fries, along with sides of cream of spinach and mac and cheese. the mac and cheese was incredibly creamy and cheesy, pure comfort food. I had dinner here last night and it was pointed out to me, that I didn't review this place. Now, I'm almost positive I did - but maybe I did compose one; left it as a draft and somehow deleted it. Anyway, here goes ... I was introduced to Dal Rae by a fellow Yelper who has never steered me wrong. We, along with others, had a tradition of dining here on Halloween which this year, would be the first time back, since before the pandemic. However, it was decided to dine last night (Sunday) as Friday was not only Halloween, the Dodgers were playing and traffic on Fridays is a true nightmare. Valet parking. $6. Or you can find parking on the street. Inside, it's an old school steakhouse. Host/hostess stand as soon as you enter. Straight ahead is the bar and lounge and a dining room straight back. To the left, is a private room which last night was in use. To the right is the main dining area plus a garden room, which is where we chose to sit last night. Couldn't figure out why it was so busy until we found the menu celebrating Dal Rae's 67th anniversary. We thought it was just Dodger fans out to partying the World Series win. Service was excellent. The team took care of us all the way down to boxing up our leftovers, tableside. Not that I'd worry about staff messing with my food at this place, but others, I have to admit, it's in the back of my mind. Friendly. Polite. Personable. Professional. Not arrogant, nor inattentive or cold at all. As for the food, see pics. Flavorful, juicy, tender steaks. Fresh, hearty, savory sides. I had the pleasure of dining at the Dal Rae for the first time and I was blown away in every aspect how amazing everything was, every detail, every bite in an atmosphere that's very hard to find these days. Let's start with a little history of the Dal Rae, it opened in 1951 and has been sharing its extraordinary menu and dining experience to many including my wife's parents and family who dined there regularly for over 40 years. My wife's parents and her sisters would go there regularly as children. The Dal Rae offers a unique "old school" charm from the classic dining room vibe that you seldom see, don't get me wrong there are still a few of these places around but you know I experienced so much that I just don't see anymore. The dark dining room lit by table candles and dim lighting, featuring a long hardwood bar with the same lighting making amazing cocktails past the stage that hosts live entertainment to the dining rooms with the same lighting with booths with clothed tables, baskets of breads and a relish tray. The entire staff is friendly and honored to have you in their dining room. Let's talk about the food, a good sized menu offering some old school appetizers as well as your others, fine cuts of meats, fresh seafoods and aged beef. My entree came with a house salad that I have to say was the best dinner salad I have ever had, I am not sure if it was the fact that the salad was prepared and tossed with the house made blue cheese dressing with large chunks of blue cheese with simple additions but every bite was incredible. If I wasn't in such a classy establishment I would have kicked the plate . (But I didn't) our entrees came after our salads and some had French Onion Soup. My brother in law/wife and his brother/wife and sister/husband along with my wife filled our table. My brother in law and his siblings also dined at the Dal Rae with their parents when they were young and still come to this day. So there was a lot of great food on our table as well as great family. I ordered the Steak Diane a dish rarely found these days, I was so excited to have this again and just as excited to try it at Dal Rae, as it was prepared table side you could instantly smell the aromas of Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, butter and other ingredients then the brandy with a flash of fire creating the fragrant decadent sauce only to be found in Steak Diane. It was Molto Bene in every bite e tutti delizioso! All our dishes were simply incredible, great flavors and served with such class and old school charm. We also had the pleasure of the owner coming to our table and sharing some history of the restaurant and his family commitments to serving the community, people from Los Alamitos Race Track, the jockeys, the owners, the fans and continuing to do so. We all were so full we passed on the dessert menu but if I could fit it into my leg I would have gone with the Bananas Foster.....so I guess I need to come back for more. Really enjoy DR but the last two visits have disappointed us. We ordered the orange duck and that was extremely salty, the sword fish was dry and very tough. Appetizers we very yummy. The fish was cooked to perfection with grilled onions on top and a creamy sauce...hearty portion as well. My coworkers raved over the peppercorn beef and chowder. Step inside this elegant restaurant and you swear you are in a Martin Scorsese movie! Pure class. We were a large group that came in for lunch and were promptly seated. The somber lighting inside set the mood for a relaxed, leisurely lunch. I ordered the fresh Chilean Sea Bass ala Ben from the lunch menu. The sea bass was deliciously flaky and buttery and had a parmesan crust. The mashed potatoes, sautéed onions, and broccoli added just the right touch. Another delicious work lunch at Dal Rae. Got here around 11:50am for a 12pm reservation. Got seated in the Garden Patio, and it was super decked out in holiday decorations. Even had a big Christmas tree. I got the famous pepper steak (like always). This time it came with broccoli. We didn't get any appetizers this time, so we got dessert instead. What a gem! I never knew about this restaurant nor had I heard about it. Somehow caught a foodie influencer visiting Dal Rae and realized I've never been here. We arrived for dinner and the only Parking available is valet. There is no parking on the street or across the street. Very reasonable fee $6-7. Walking into the restaurant from the bright sunlight outside, you'll need to adjust your eyes once inside. You check in with your reservation. It's dim and cozy and once you can focus you'll see the old school charm. Decore of art deco with 60s charm. First order of business was a golden pineapple martini. This was like having a straw right out of a pineapple. Martini wasn't very strong to me, but then server did mention that drinks can be adjusted if you prefer. I preferred to walk out in a straight line so the amount of alcohol was fine. The calamari with the cocktail sauce and the other one was like a white oyster cream that is similar to what you would have in a seafood pasta. The batter somehow had a slight taste of fried chicken batter? Not sure, but I would order this again. If I dine at a new place and they serve prime rib then that's what I'm ordering. Always a good thing to know of places with above average to exceptional prime rib. We both went with the 10oz. medium. Delicious. Cooked the way I like it and not fatty. The meat itself is tender. You can ask for more au jus if you like to dip. I was having a good time and had not tried the sides. Rice pilaf was good, creamed spinach was a bit runny, but the taste was good, baked potato seemed like a small size compared to most places. This didn't bother me, since I do not focus on potatoes much. We enjoyed a celebratory chocolate lava brownie - delish! Dinner reservations were made for Thursday, Nov 19th @5pm We were seated right away. For starters we ordered, ahi sashimi toast 3/10 (toast was a bit too chewy to bite) & wild greens taste old. I would change the bread. Baked Cava de Oro scallops 10/10 would order again! Dal Rae Ceasar salad is more for show, than the actual salad being good. Too salty for my taste & the croutons had a burnt taste! The center cut swordfish w/butter capers 8/10 Wagyu fillet 9/10 Chilean sea bass 9/10 One thing I didnt appreciate, was the man who came & assumed I was done having bread & cheese bread, swooped his fingers up on my plate & asked me if I was ready to have it boxed. I felt so rushed & agreed to have it boxed! We ending up ordering 2 desserts at the end, but felt so uncomfortable being there after that moment. Heard a lot about this place and gave it a go. will not be giving it another go. reminds me of Lawry's. I get it's cultured and historical, but the love and flavor just ain't there for me. Not saying it isn't a good place, there were other folks inside enjoying their meals including the group I was with. The service was great. Parking appears to be private and or Valet. If you don't have any Cash to get your car, I'm not sure what happens. read more

The food is always on point, but it's the people and service that keep me coming back. The Food I usually rotate between the Branzino, the Chilean sea bass, and their tableside Caesar, but today I went with a medium-rare ribeye paired with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Perfectly cooked, beautifully plated, and full of that rich, signature flavor you expect from Dal Rae. Ambiance This place carries history in its walls. It's got that classic supper club feel; dim lighting, polished bar, and an atmosphere that makes you slow down and enjoy your meal. Whether you're here for lunch or a special dinner, it always feels elevated. Service Anthony behind the bar deserves a mention. Always sharp, attentive, and friendly, you can tell he's a pro who takes pride in what he does. The staff here makes you feel like a regular even if it's your first visit. I was really looking forward to dining at Dal Rae after hearing so many great things, but unfortunately my experience was disappointing from start to finish. We arrived around 6:40 p.m. and were told there would be a wait until approximately 8:00 p.m., so we waited at the bar. While we waited, there was a very strong chlorine-like odor that was noticeable enough to stand out. We were seated around 7:30 p.m. shortly after a large party of about 12 people. I completely understand that large parties require extra attention, but from the moment we sat down, it felt like our table became an afterthought. Our server never introduced himself, never offered drink recommendations or asked if we'd like anything beyond the complimentary water, and rarely checked on us throughout the meal. Most of his attention seemed to be focused on the large party which was weird because he was just the assistant to the server who was assigned the table. The most frustrating part came after we finished eating. Our food had already been boxed up, and we waited approximately 30 minutes just to receive our check. Eventually, we had to ask the hostess for help because we hadn't seen our server. She explained she couldn't access our bill and suggested we find him. A few minutes later, he walked over, silently dropped the check on the table without saying a single word, and immediately returned to the large party. We left feeling forgotten and genuinely disappointed by the level of service, especially considering Dal Rae's reputation as an upscale restaurant. However, what happened next is the real reason for this review. After we paid and left the restaurant, our server followed us outside to question why we felt his service was poor. He began explaining how long he'd been serving and insisted he would never intentionally provide bad service. Regardless of his intentions, this was incredibly inappropriate and made me feel uncomfortable. Guests should be able to leave honest feedback and leave the restaurant without being confronted by an employee in the parking lot. I've dined at many restaurants over the years, and I have never had a server follow me outside over a tip or written comment. That crossed a professional boundary and turned what was already a disappointing evening into an unsettling one. I'm not writing this review because service was slow--restaurants get busy, and I understand that. I'm writing it because no guest should ever feel intimidated or confronted after their meal. I sincerely hope management addresses this situation because it reflects poorly on what is otherwise known as a respected establishment. Valentines Dinner Fail! I wish I had a better experience here but the service here and the table next to us making racist remarks ultimately tainted my experience. It also wasn't advertised anywhere on their websites or socials that the valentines dinner had started 2/13 so we were a bit disappointed with the limited menu. FOOD 4/5 My steak here was great! Cesar salad was also delicious and my favorite was the chocolate cake! My steak did come out rare but then was sent back and came back perfect. SERVICE 2/5 My server Danielle wasn't the most attentive or friendly and throughout our dinner, felt like she was trying to educate us. For example, when my steak came out rare, she argued and said it wasn't rare but medium, even when compared to my partners steak which was cooked medium, she insisted it was medium but if i want it more cooked she would send it back. It didn't make us feel good. She was also more attentive to the larger party next to us. We had to grab her for the check and the dessert. It just wasn't the service I was expecting. She just did the bare minimum, nothing above and beyond. When we asked why the valentine's day menu was there the day before valentine's day she said they were extremely busy, but there was also empty tables around us throughout dinner. I wish this was advertised. I want to shoutout the bussers though who were very friendly and very attentive. AMBIANCE 4/5 This place was cute, loved the vibes. I think what killed the ambiance and vibe for me was the large table next to us who was making racist remarks about latinos.
