Mayo Spice Me Up
Angela C.

Steve's Poke Bar has opened up their newest location in Richmond right in the Broadmoor mall. Here's what I tried: Ala Moana (BYOB) Mayo Spice Me Up Steve's Traditional Poke My favourite bowl is the Mayo Spice Me Up featuring spicy mayo salmon, furikake, tobiko, corn, edamame, imitation crab, seaweed salad, pickled ginger, sesame seeds and Steve's Spicy Mayo drizzled on top! It's so delicious, filling, and I love how the ingredients are always super fresh! I also tried out Ala Moana which is Ahi Tuna dry marinated with dry chilis, Hawaiian sea salt imported from Hawaii and caviar ~ I love how they honor how traditional poke is made and I really enjoyed this bowl! Definitely think that Steve's Poke is super worth because of their huge portion size! Don't forget to download their app for a free scoop of poke~

My wife and I were a little apprehensive about trying this restaurant, as there were no reviews on…read moreYelp, and those on Google were less-than-enthusiastic, although looking more in depth, it seems that the negative reviews were all several years old, and things seemingly had improved significantly in recent years. And while there are no shortage of seafood restaurants serving fresh crab on the Steveston waterfront, we wanted to give The Crab King a fair shake. I'm so glad that we did! My wife ordered a King Crab for herself which, after tearing it literally limb-from-limb, eventually declared it to be tied for her favorite boiled crab dish anywhere! High praise coming from such a consummate crustacean connoisseur! For myself and our son, an order of fish and chips, and the grilled chicken sandwich rounded out our order, both of which were crispy, tasty and delicious. Regarding the fish and chips, they appeared to be tempura-battered, and I'm still not 100% sure what type of fish it was. It may have been cod, but it seemed more like catfish, but either way, it was tender, juicy, flaky and delicious. No complaints here! More than anything, though, the employees here went out of their way to make our experience enjoyable. Our toddler son, who is normally extremely well-behaved in restaurants, was having a bit of a fuss here and there. Without prompting, the servers brought us a little radio to play music for him, as well as a couple of toys to play with, one of them being a wind-up truck that they gave to him to take home! He loved it there, and still plays with it at home! They even played peek-a-boo with him from behind the counter, soliciting laughs and giggles, for the better part of 15 minutes! That sort of customer service is nearly impossible to find, and should be praised and cherished wherever it is found! Whatever the past may have held for this restaurant, the Crab King is an entirely new animal now, serving up fresh seafood by uncommonly wonderful employees, in a fantastic floating location. They even offer to cook spot prawns and other seafood purchased from the boats docked at the nearby waterfront marketplace, for a modest fee. With all these things going for it, there's no doubt who wears the crown of Crab King in Steveston Harbor!

We've been to The Fish Man a few times, and I am a little surprised that I neglected to write a…read morereview since I have enjoyed it every time we went. This recent trip to Vancouver, we went again and ordered a few new items to try. We loved their geoduck the last few times as appetizer, so this time we went ahead with the whole geoduck cooked two ways (ginger & scallion and wok-fried with hot pepper & pork). I have been eyeing their sour cabbage fish pot so we finally were able to order it this time. Then we added their garlic stir fried luffa. One thing I will say, the service has been consistently great in this restaurant. I remember the first time we came, years ago, hubby and I were so lost on what to order. The server handed us the menu and it felt like a book...quite intimidating. She patiently chatted with us about our likes and dislikes and helped us place an order. We've been back several times for many years and every one we encountered have been equally helpful and friendly. I don't know if it's because we like to come for early dinner, but the vibe always felt pretty chilled. Even towards the end of our meal that tables are starting to fill up, it was still a pretty nice atmosphere. I suspect tho that towards later in dinner service, the place might be hopping. Lastly, this time we had my mom with us and she is a tough critic when it comes to seafood and Chinese food. She was very happy with the dishes, so I know we'll continue to come back to The Fish Man when we are in town!

We found street parking, though there appeared to be a few spaces behind the restaurant if you're lucky enough to snag one. The ambiance is bright and lively, but people are definitely here for the food. Service was friendly and efficient, with servers, runners, and other staff constantly refilling water and clearing tables. We started with the scallops and vermicelli. They came with plenty of garlic, but the scallops were somewhat overcooked and tougher than I prefer--about three stars for that dish. The mala hotpot with lingcod was the star of the meal, with a wonderful balance of tongue-numbing spice, deep flavor, fish, and vegetables. The clams were equally delicious, served in a sweet and spicy sauce that was so good I kept stopping the staff from clearing the plate so I could spoon more of it over my white rice. The yu choy with garlic sauce had an excellent crunch and plenty of flavor, making it a great vegetable dish to balance the meal. The Coedo Yuzu beer paired beautifully with the spicy food and had a pleasantly sweet, citrusy taste. An excellent meal overall and absolutely worth the visit. Enjoy!

We really enjoyed our meal. The only downside was the assistant server. She checked on us several times to see if we had finished eating, even though there was still some food left on our plates. We waited for a few minutes for someone to notice we were there, and were immediately seated. It's a nice looking place - very classic whites, and feels like a fine dining restaurant. We decided to try the following: - Beef Carpaccio: Good. Maybe a bit light on the meat, as it was buried by the arugula and pickled shallots, so seemed unbalanced, but overall tasted great - Seafood Linguini: Mixed. Linguini was good. Scallops were really good and tender. Mussels were tiny. Red snapper was tough and dry. As a dish, it was OK, but could be better. Seafood is seasonal, so I'd think they would be better off rotating what seafood is used. - LuLu Island: OK. Same issue as the linguine. Prawns were fine. Mussels tiny. Red snapper wasn't enjoyable. Broth had flavour, but didn't come out very hot. Service was pleasant but slow. I only saw one server and one busser, so not enough staff to handle 6 or 7 tables they had. Starter came n reasonable time, but main dishes seemed to take over 20min. Took awhile to get our plates cleared, and probably 15+ minutes to get the bill. Overall, it was OK. Food was OK, but not special. Service was nice enough, but couldn't keep up with timing. Glad I got to try it, but not special enough to go back.

You'll want to make a reservation WEEKS in advance and hope for the best! Our group ordered so many delicious items, and some standouts were: Shrimp Har Gao: These were crisp and tasty, with a skin that was the appropriate thickness - and of course had enough slip to it. Yum! Pork Shu Mai: These ingredients were tip top! I'm not a fan of pork, but I enjoyed this one... whatever they marinated it in was amazing. Stuffed Eggplant: Tasty, too! I love eggplant, especially the stuffed ones. The sauce paired very well and was simply satisfying. Mushroom Noodles: This was honestly a hot mess and hot miss. It tasted very bland like airplane food... highly recommend not ordering this! Cheung Fun - The rice noodle was crisp and very satisfying. Whether an oil stick or protein, highly recommend this one. What's nice is eating here was very relaxing late in the afternoon. The overall ambiance is spacious and quiet enough for conversation. Either we got lucky missing out on the liveliness, or all the aunties with tea left before we arrived. Overall, I could see myself coming back for the dim sum... but have a little more reservation (no pun intended) when trying their lunch items.

Mushroom soup: not much flavour and a few leathery fried mushrooms at the bottom Yam salad with kale and barley: was fresh and colourful but needed some acid to liven it up. After four bites I got bored. Rice balls: golden brown and bite size with a side of tomato sauce with shredded onions and carrots. Rice was overcooked and mushy. Tomato with pancetta spaghetti: here is where the fusion aspect misses because I didn't like cured ham flavour of the pancetta. Service was good, very quick. The restaurant was clean, well set up, and nicely lighted. The service was great. Our server was friendly, and the food came out quickly. Now into the food: Honey Garlic Chicken Wings 2.5/5. They were ok but nothing special. I feel like I could have similar wings buying it frozen from the grocery store and at $2.50/wing. I cant justify that. Seafood Pasta 3/5. For something that was almost $30 I expected more. The amount and size of seafood was fine but I had expected more flavour like grilled prawns or seared scallops. Seems like it was all poached so there was no colour and everything was the same texture, colour, and flavour. It was cooked well and tender, but for the price, I would have liked some crust on my scallops and I could not taste the lobster in the sauce. Overall, it was seasoned well and still tasted good. Calabrese Salami Pizza 3.5/5 Crust was crispy and thin. Good amount of salami. Could have used more olives. The oven made the salami nicely crisp on the edges. However, there was no basil as noted on the menu. Just a little bit of basil oil drizzled on the center. Overall, if you want a comfortable place to sit and catch up with friends, this is a good place for it. The food while okay, could use some improvement.
