Loco moco and spam musubi
Rosalyn L.

A bit surprised at the low reviews, perhaps they've improved since summer? We came here recently for lunch and ordered the loco moco and huli huli chicken, as well as a couple spam musubis to share. The prices seemed quite steep at first, but one loco moco + a spam musubi was the perfect size to share between two people so it wasn't so bad. The flavour of the loco moco wasn't as in your face as I'd hoped, it paled in comparison to the loco mocos I'd had in Hawaii. The huli huli chicken didn't disappoint though, it was juicy and packed with flavour. I also enjoyed the sides of corn and macaroni it came with. The interior aesthetics are super pleasing to the eye, we were admiring the unique surfboard artwork on the wall as we ate. One other criticism we had was that the food was served in cardboard trays even though we were eating inside (my Hawaii connoisseur friend told us it was meant to be a homage to Hawaiian restaurants often serving food in takeout boxes, but also thought it wasn't very eco-friendly). If we do come back again, I'd definitely get the huli huli chicken and maybe one of their shaved ice flavours.

Friendliness and customer service - amazing! Garlic shrimp and Huli Huli chicken plates - amazing! The chicken was tender and juicy. Great flavour. Loved the Mac salad and can't go wrong with corn! The garlic shrimp doesn't taste exactly like it does in Hawaii. A little less garlicky and buttery but does the job! Shave ice! So good! It would be amazing if they had mochi option or ice cream to add. I'm glad though to have all the fabulous flavour options you can find from Hawaii here! POG, passion fruit, lychee, mango! Yum! Good amount of seating and cool surf boards and designs inside.

We havn't had Hawaiian Shaved Ice since...well since we went to Hawaii, and that was years ago! I was so excited to hear about Aloha Hawaiian Grill opening up in Steveston, and even more excited when we finally managed to go to it. They serve cooked food in addition to Hawaiian Shaved Ice. You can get dishes like Loco Moco and Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp; we'd already had our lunch elsewhere so we just wanted the shaved ice! For an extra $0.50 you can have your Hawaiian Shaved Ice Snow Capped (drizzled with condensed milk) so we chose that option, and then selected the following three flavors for our shaved ice:  Strawberry Colada Ube Guava  I've had at least two shaved ice desserts if not more within the last few months, where the shaved ice was not very finely shaved. Rather, the ice was roughly crushed which makes for a not so pleasant eating experience. The shaved ice at Aloha Hawaiian Grill was very finely shaved. Finally! It began to melt extremely quickly though. I don't know if that had to do with the shaved ice itself, or if it was due to the heat from the sun. I certainly don't recall our shaved ice melting that quickly when we were in Hawaii. Either way, we aren't going to Hawaii any time soon so I would happily return to this place for Hawaiian Shaved Ice again! Service: Good Parking: Mix of free and paid parking throughout the streets in Steveston Village Location: #110-3900 Bayview St., Richmond, BC

Ok so let me set the record straight... everyone was so excited at the opening of this place. Finally, some hawaiian food in the village. So much hype as theres no other establishment like it in yvr. Much to my dismay, i was very disappointed at the experience. Heres a blow by blow.... The ambiance. 4stars - nicely decorated place and spruced up with surfboards etc. you come in and the owner gives you a lei to wear whole eating. Since its The summer season and its near the water...the doors are wide open...thus inside and outside seating feels breezy like hawaii. Nothing beats fresh ocean breeze..thanks to steveston village. The food: 2-3stars at most bec of the huli chicken was the only good thing from what we ordered. No pineapple and smoky island flavour on the food. No teriyaki flare either..as hawaiians are known for this coz of the japanese influence. The hawaiian shrimp was not seasoned well. No hawaiian flare. More like chinese garlic fried shrimp with shells on. The hawaiian ribs were the biggest let down. Boiled and not even grilled long enough. No smoky flavour..just lathered with sauce. I could make better 100%. Nothing to say hawaiian about it. And such a small qty, not even half a rack for the price. The plate focused more on carbs on carbs...huge mounds of rice and a macaroni salad and some corn. The service also was sub par. Knowing its a busy weekend, they ran out of forks and cups...and being theres a grocery store nearby, they didnt even do a cutlery run. They just continued service without forks. When a patron asked, how we gonna eat with a spoon, they said "use your hands." They also ran out of hamburger steak..during lunch hour lol! You think they'd be prepared by now..months after their soft opening. You came hungry and left bloated coz of the carbs and unsatisfied with the bland food. Only the huli chicken saved the day. It was the closest thing to hawaiian food, having a teriyaki flare to it. Again, just a small piece of chicken. Saw another table order the kalbi ribs and only a few pieces. Dinner for 4 here can easily reach $100. No water service. Had to pay for overpriced water and tropic hawaiian drinks. They have a shaved ice machine, but no prices. I never asked anymore as i wanted to save my money else where. Having live close to this location, i was very excited about their opening. But now, im nonchalant. Wont ever return or recommend. The issue is i have been to hawaii several Times and have tasted the food there. I set the bar too high thinking since one of the owners is from hawaii or has relatives there...flavours should be more authentic. :( Cheers! Happy eating!

Huli Huli Chicken

A casual family-owned spot that transports you to Hawaii without the additional travel expenses! Great if you're craving plate lunches! The food was fresh and served fast. I really enjoyed it, and staff were also friendly. Tried their Huli Huli Chicken and their Loco Moco. I found the prices a little high at first, but both dishes came with hefty portions of rice and were delicious- I was able to share both plates between 2 people! The chicken was juicy, well-marinated, grilled to order, and had a nice charred flavour. It also came with a side of creamy macaroni salad and corn. The Loco Moco was saucy and satisfying!! They also sell shave ice, spam musubi, and Hawaiian Sun! Unfortunately the drinks were a little expensive, but could be because they are made in Hawaii. Appreciated how they left the door open inside to allow the breeze to flow in, and also had seating outside. We chose to sit outside and staff brought the food to us once it was ready. It really felt like we were in Hawaii, minus the heat!

Huli Huli chicken (top) and Maui Beef Ribs

Tried AHG during their soft opening just over a week ago (we had also gone there the day prior to try the shave ice - was good!), to see how the entrees were. I really wanted to like this place as we had been wanting some tasty Hawaiian food since our Christmas vacation in Kona, however AHG missed the mark. I so wanted to love the food, but it just wasn't good. We ordered the Huli Huli chicken and the Maui Beef Ribs. While both looked great, the flavours fell flat. The Huli Huli chicken was moist but that is about all it had going for it...the sauce was primarily on the skin, thus making the rest of the chicken mostly tasteless. The sauce while okay, was really no better than bottled sauce you'd find at your local grocery store. For $17, I'd expect at the very least, fully marinated chicken that had flavour throughout. Our other entree was Maui Beef Ribs. At $22, the portion was fairly large (every entree came with Mac salad, corn and rice), but again pretty much tasteless. There was a hint of Maui rib flavour but not much. While I understand most restaurants need to use the cheapest cuts of meat for the most profit, these ribs were so tough and hard to cut...perhaps it was the wooden utensils, but just getting a piece off of the rib was a feat in of itself. As for sides, the rice was plain white with no other choices such as fried or brown (would be great to have the option for furikake or some kind of seasoning put on / in it as well!). The corn and Mac salad were again, just ok. We really wanted to love this place but because of the lack of flavour and just being overall disappointed, I have to give it only one star. That being so, I might give AHG another chance some months from now to see if they kicked up the flavours...fingers crossed!

maui beef ribs + hawaiian garlic shrimp
Kennedy G.

ordered the maui beef ribs + hawaiian garlic shrimp the fried shrimp tasted bland and overcooked but the maui ribs were juicy but extremely greasy - the cooks also forgot to season one of our corns as per the pic and the mac salad was alright. the person serving us wasn't really friendly, and the decor on the inside was definitely hawaiian-esque

Good lunch specials. However, I would only preorder online. If you walk in during lunch, expect to wait 30+ minutes for your order.

For the record - I've been to Hawaii several times but never had Poke there - to my utter shock & horror! Anyway, my bro said it was the kinda looking gas station you avoid just like in the movies. Well was he ever stunned - walked in & towards the back - Poke for sale. He really hesitated but was so hungry. Good thing he caved in cause he described it as the best Poke he ever had till today! Hawaii is the originator of Poke. I'll be honest I've been a bit slow to the Poke trend. I've tried it a couple times before but what caught my eye & my appetite this time was the sandwich board outside Westcoast Poke, advertising its daily specials. My gosh the Dynamite Poke absolutely tantilzed me. Flavours were 100% on point & delivered pure joy & happiness in mouth! Most definitely top marks for WCP! Bravo for freshness, presentation & cleanliness! I've tried the Coast Poke & thoroughly enjoyed it as well - Dynamite (Prawns) Coast (salmon). Oh one last thing - it's pronounced 'pow-kay' not 'poke' as in - I poked the bear. So say it right when you order it ok!?! Keep in mind that when you walk into most Poke shops, there is a strong pungent smell of the raw fish that's served. Trust me don't go with the urge to run away, cause the taste of Poke is absolutely a hit in all the right ways. I'm going to try & make 2023 the year I go hard at healthy eating via lots of Poke! I'm going to give up on ice-cream, donuts, chocolate, alcohol, cigar smoking etcetera ... ok staaaaaap! No way Jose! Who do you think I am!?! LOL! As it's year end I'll wish everyone a Merry Christmas & plenty drinks on New Year's Eve - celebrate, celebrate, celebrate! Salut & best wishes for 2023!

Patient and friendly staff, that they take the time to explain the menu to you. Very generous portions (especially with the avocado). Lots of toppings to choose from. For example, crab salad and seaweed salad had a spicy and non-spicy option, which was my first time experiencing that on a poke menu personally. My order: Coast: my favourite of the 2 bowls I ordered - it's super saucy (burnt miso chili oil & garlic aioli sauce). The highlight was the fresh Atlantic salmon, and I really enjoyed the mangoes. The sweetness from the mangoes really ties the bowl together very nicely with an extra layer of flavour. Aloha: Ahi tuna in a lighter shoyu sauce, with seaweed salad & avocado. They also offer custom bowls, and currently have a rotation of "Poke of the Day", which is $10/bowl from their Signature selection (not sure how long this promo lasts though).

Compared to the locations on W 8th and Hornby, this location is more optimized for takeout; the seating is just stools at counters along the walls and for me the counter was awkwardly high compared to the height of the stool. It was also a little loud. If you're just getting takeout it doesn't make a difference because the food is consistent between all locations, but I would recommend the other location downtown (or the W 8th location if that's in range) for a more comfortable dine-in experience. I tried the Diamond Head pokerrito and subbed out the spicy tuna for the vegan tuna. It's still not a vegan meal if you do this because there are other seafood ingredients in the wrap, but I wanted to try the vegan tuna. It was delicious but very messy because the pokérrito is essentially a giant sushi roll and not sealed at the ends. You kind of have to keep it wrapped in the paper while you eat it but there's no graceful way to eat the ends. I really enjoyed the flavours of this even if I had to get my hands dirty though. The vegan tuna is pretty good. The texture is close enough to real tuna that I wouldn't have noticed it was different if I didn't know. I also got a tiramisu. When I ordered, the person making my order informed me that it was still frozen but it was still good frozen, like ice cream. So I decided that I'd try it and it was pretty good as a frozen dessert except the large ladyfingers at the bottom were slower to soften and hard to scoop out. The coffee soaked into the ladyfingers was pretty strong and the bitterness was a nice contrast with the mascarpone cream. Their prices are very reasonable. The pokérrito and tiramisu came out to $19.90.
