You get there, you feel like you're in an abandoned area on the coast of Massachusetts, there's a random white screen door with cute signs around it, and a hand-written schedule stating: sometimes they close early, sometimes they're closed for the whole day, depending on weather, if they run out of pies, if the worker doesn't come in, if the owner needs to leave early, sometimes for no reason at all. You're Really hoping that they're open after the trek, it's kind of late in the day. You open the door and there's a counter right in front of you and a guy comes out from the back. Steve's also shares space with an office to the left (can't remember their cause, Red Hook Fishermen?) and a woman's Mexican? tchochtke "museum," which lots of colorful crafts lining the walls. It was blocked by a piece of rope and with a sign that said "closed for the day." I have no idea what Steven's rent is like, they take up pretty much a front 100 square foot CORNER of a house. But their pies are really good, it was worth it. It is a little pricey, I think it was more cost-effective for me to buy 3 tiny ones, than 3 slices (one to bring back for a friend). Everything tasted fresh and the quality was really good. The tartness in the pie complemented the butteryness of the thick graham crust. If they can make 1 good thing and live off of selling it, why not? FYI- I don't find the trek to Red Hook as daunting and/or confusing as a lot of Yelpers. The Brooklyn public/IKEA bus runs often, leaving from the central subway hub of Downtown Brooklyn and heading down Atlantic Avenue, circling back around. Van Brunt seems like the main street in Red Hook, with enough foot traffic and shops, and Steve's is just off to the right towards the water. I've driven and taken public transportation and I'd say it's not more than 30min. from Manhattan. read more

While I'm not the first person to review this, I was the first person to visit their new location (just around the corner from the old location, its right by the entrance to the park that is nearby, so think warehouse corner location). We went to the old location the day they were moving...was told by the owner they were moving across the street, and we walked around and around but couldn't find it. Drove a few blocks around too and still couldn't find it. Just as we were about to give up, their truck drove by and we followed. Boy, were we glad!! We each had their Swingle sticks, delicious!! We'll be back for some full sized pies soon! My dollar bill is the first on the wall, as the owner chased me down to sign it and wish them luck! Cute shop, great friendly staff and a good treat if you're in the area. I was too ambitious. You can not walk there if it's hot and you can not walk there from Red Hook Ball Fields after eating there. It didn't stop me from seeking out via foot where Steve's Key Lime Pie was. A very nice woman that we bumped into and asked how to head towards Red Hook was the one who told us about this place. After it's mentioning, we couldn't get the notion out of our heads to have some. It's far. Not a real walking option unless you're up for a hike (coming via train - maybe it's only bad for me because I don't exercise often). Drive there. There's parking. I will not waste time with the regular key lime pie. I will skip ahead and just load up on swingle (choco covered on a stick). The lime tartness from the key lime melds beautifully w/the chocolate. These pies are better than any Key Lime pie I've ever had. And that includes a trip to the Florida Keys where I had like KLP at like, 8 different places. They use real lime juice here, which I think gives the taste a real leg up. I'm almost reluctant to shout them out because I don't want them to get so popular that I have to wait on an even longer line next time I go. Anyhow, they're a really great spot where you can get some really great pie. I'd recommend it after taking a Ferry trip from Manhattan to Brooklyn; the journey and dessert together make for a nice little adventure. read more

The frozen key like pop on a stick was really good (and I'm not a fan of key lime pie)! The bitterness of the dark chocolate balances the raspberry. They key lime part added a creaminess without overpowering. Graham cracker crust was a bit much for me, but I'm sure others like it. And you can eat it while sitting on the mini beach. One bite of one Steve's key lime pie and I was hooked! I could almost feel the warm rays of the sun and hear the ocean waves back in the Florida keys. Ahhhhh! A little piece of Heaven. The 4" tart is the perfect serving for one. Creamy, key lime filling in a buttery, graham cracker crust. I basically inhaled mine, it was so delicious! I really wasn't a fan of the Swingle (which is only available at Steve's). It's essentially the 4" tart on a stick covered in chocolate. I'm a weirdo though . Even though I love chocolate and dessert separately, I don't like chocolate covered desserts. If chocolate covered desserts are your thang, then it's worth the trek to Steve's to check this unique dessert out. We also got the key limeaid to wash it all down. Yes, we made the crazy trek over here!! First of all, don't even sample their tiny key lime pie, because you know it's going to be good. Just buy their huge $30 pie. I was on a search last year for a tart yet sweet dessert and heard about Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pie right in Brooklyn? Go figure, but my taste buds were not dissapointed. The consistency of the filling is really good with no artificial after taste so you feel there's no preservative junk and the crust crumbles with every spoonful. Translation? FRESH. The interior décor of the store front "shake" is an eclectic but don't let that distract you too much. I have always enjoyed Key Lime Pie. I had a chance to stop by Steve's Authentic Key Lime pies on Van Dyke Street, in Brooklyn I arrived after hours not realizing the place had already closed. I thought the place was more like a restaurant, but it's set up like a traditional bakery with basic hours of operation. After poking around for a few minuets, I was approached by what I thought was a worker. He explained that they were closed, I explained that it was my Birtday and my boy and mother were looking forward to a pie. That person who approached me was Steve the owner of the business, he was happy to provide me with a pie as well as a birthday treat for myself. The pie was amazing and the customer service was even better. He could have easily let me drive off with out a pie, but he didn't. I purchased an 8 inch pie from a retailer (Staubitz Market) on court street and thought that it was an average key lime pie. Crust, sweetness level, and texture was good but it lacks tartness. (I've had key lime pies from the the Florida keys all of which are more tart). I would still like to try the swingles next time though. read more

To put it bluntly, they are forgettable. I'll also be honest and say I haven't had that much key lime pie from different establishments but the pie here doesn't really knock your socks off. If it does I would tend to assume that you never had it, or you have been having very crappy key lime pies. Oh woah, now you might be wondering that with all this bashing the rating seems too high. On to the good things. Location, location, location. Driving here I was taken aback by how in the middle of nowhere this seemed to be. But upon arrival you see the Statue of Liberty as close as possible in Brooklyn. Followed by a large beautiful overflowing body of water named the East River in case you were wondering. And! to top it off, its right next to a park, and it has it's own parking lot! Service, the service is 5 stars, it really is a homey feeling here, with its hippie feeling decorations, and wooden seats outside. The staff is very friendly too, I was actually taught why the chip on your debit/ credit card is an important safety feature. You also get the novelty chocolate covered key lime pie, I'd argue that it's better than the original but my companion seemed to disagree. I wrote this like a year ago but apparently Yelp decided to not transfer over Steve's Keylime pies reviews so I'm just gonna copy and paste this back because this place is THAT GOOD I got off my lazy ass to do this: I'm picky as hell when it comes to everything. I don't like citrus, I don't like pie (except for apple pie which I would kill a man over), and I don't like the pudding/cheese cake consistency... And yet I freaking love Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies. They're so goddamn good, what the hell!? I first made a pilgrimage out here for the ridiculousness that is a swingle- a 4" frozen key lime pie covered in chocolate ON A STICK- and I was immediately won over. I've since come back for the normal pie and it's just as good. This place is like a complete loophole in my tastebuds and I'm not even gonna question it, I'm just gonna keep coming back until I gain 60 pounds. Also- bonus extra points for them being insanely Brooklyn and posting about 8 "hey asshole, don't fuck around" signs before you walk in. I'm not sure if I'd go that far, and next time I go, I'm skipping the not-very-good limeade, but for $4, the 4-inch tart is refreshing and share-able. Disclaimer: I have yet to try the swingle (chocolate-covered lime pie), and admittedly (after reading everyone else's rave reviews), this may be affecting my overall opinion/star rating. Brooklyn is slowly but surely starting to become my new fav hangout spot. I was actually surprised to see how much Red Hook, Brooklyn has grown on me. Last weekend the boyfriend and I decided to take a drive down there and as USUAL I was craving something sweet. After we walked on the pier we spotted this little warehouse looking spot with cute little benches and AWESOME graffiti. VOILA, then I knew my tooth craving would be fulfilled. It all started on a Saturday morning when I got a ambiguous text from my cousin asking if I wanted to go get pies. He never specified where, just that he would come pick me up in 30 minutes. We were going to get pies. 45 minutes later, we were parking in front of Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies, which I had no idea even existed. Full credit to this place for a streamlined, efficient operation on a beautiful Sunday with lots of customers. Even with a bit of a line, in a few minutes you'll be $6.50 poorer and one frozen key lime pie dipped in chocolate richer. And oh, how rich it is. What's a visit to Red Hook without a trip to Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies. I LOOOOOVE me a good key lime pie, and the ones at Steve's is the best of the best. At Steve's, the key lime pie is made with the freshest ingredients with no shortcuts - fresh squeezed lime (not bottled!), a homemade crust they make with a graham crumble and fresh butter, condensed milk from a local farm, oh, and love, a lot a lot of love - you can really taste the amazing difference this makes. The first time I came here with a group of four, we bought an 8in pie, thinking we would have a bit left over. WRONG. We devoured that pie in less than 5 minutes in the parking lot, and went back to buy individual 4in tarts. Now I'm not saying these guys are the cheapest things, but it's worth the premium: 10 in - $28 8 in - $18 4 in - $5 swingle (4 in dipped in chocolate and frozen!) - $6 I'm so happy that Steve's is back open after Hurricane Sandy after having to move locations. I can't wait till the next time I'm back so I can enjoy another one of this creamy, tart goodness. read more

It'd be safe to infer that I know my way around a key lime pie since it is my favorite dessert of all time. This dessert is tricky to make correctly so over time I have shied away from tasting one every chance I get fearing that I'll be disappointed yet again. I was delightfully surprised with Steve's quality given that it's located in Brooklyn-- not south Florida. My only gripe was that the crust was a bit dry for my liking. I'll definitely be back again! EDIT: I put my leftover pie in the fridge overnight and the crust tasted so much better! Don't let it sit out for too long or the crust won't hold its shape. This review has gone from 4 to 5 stars.
