Took my friend out to Stereo41 for her birthday. It was so much fun! The music was great and food was delicious. Such an interesting mix of Middle Eastern and Japanese cuisine. We decided to order a number of dishes and share them family style. Mine and my husband's favorite was the lobster risotto and my friend loved the hamachi tostada. The stereo mezze platter is great for sharing and the sweet potato tempura was good (more sweet than savory). The cocktails were fun and yummy too! Looking forward to going back soon. read more

We had a great time at dinner! The DJ was excellent the service was great! We had the seafood platter and the oysters were delicious. While i understand why it happened, we were abruptly told that someone was waiting for our table. The bummer, was that the tables on either side of us were there before we arrived and they didn't get the same abrupt (there wasn't a heads up) someone is waiting for your table. That being said, I will go back. And I get why restaurants need to turn over the table, I'm more reacting to how it was done (abrupt and inconsistent). read more

We ordered the individual portions of the braised lamb neck, slow cooked beef, lamb merguez, stereo mezze platter, and almond cake desert. The food is solid and very tasty to make it a well rounded experience, however it doesn't hit the "blow you away" mark. The miso hummus, fromage blanc spread in the platter have great flavor and are memorable. The overall taste to me, is higher standard. Service was standard, no reason to take away any stars, but could've been slightly more attentive on beverage refills. Nice staff and personality though. Where it gets its point reduction to me is the value. I understand it's in downtown Walnut Creek with an elevated upscale vibe driving the cost, but for $70-90 per person, I wanted a more memorable bite to my meal. For those, where budget isn't a factor, you'll have a great experience here. For those looking for the best food to pair the price tag, I think those will be slightly disappointed. We went for dinner on a special Arabic music night, and the energy in the room was great the entire time. Absolute losers running the host stand at this place. We had a reservation for 6:30, which we were late for due to the torrential flooding and rain en route to the restaurant. I messaged the restaurant at 6 and 6:30 letting them know we'd be late, then called and left a voicemail with our ETA when I heard no reply. Arrived at the restaurant and the hostesses admitted they saw my message, but just chose not to reply. It's not that hard to answer the phone or communicate with your customers. We could've made other plans or gone somewhere else had they had the decency to reply to a simple message. At least I dodged a bullet and saved my money for a restaurant that deserves it. (Also, this restaurant is a far cry from a legit hifi experience. One look past the curtain was all I needed.) EDIT: we arrived at 6:55, not 7:10. The team would've known this had they paid any attention. I've been to plenty of restaurants, Michelin-starred to casual, that have more attentive service than this place. To respond and claim being busy and no time for communication as an excuse - especially when you have 3 people manning your host stand - is just inexperience and poor management. We dropped into opening night of Stereo41. A couple logistical notes, they require a $50 reservation hold and do not currently have outside seating (but will in a month). While they were friendly, our service had some lows. About 20% of our Dubai cocktail was spilled on the table on delivery and not well wiped up (or offered to be re-made), when our dishes came the dips weren't described to us (as the other table received), and while picking up our plates there was another spill which splashed across the table and almost hit me. Not what you want to see at $100 a person. Food wise we again had some lows but definitely far more highs. The skewers didn't really work as the trout felt like an odd fish choice and the kofta was over seasoned, however the honey flat out adored the tostada and the beef main dish was divine. Absolute perfection. The beef was cooked perfectly and went so well with the three sides (pistachio rice, chickpea, and veggies) that it absolutely made up for the hiccups above. I also do have to note that their sound system is perfection. They put a lot of work into acoustics and it absolutely shows. All in all, I think the menu could use some re-tooling and the service issues will likely iron out with time, but for an opening night the food was amazing and I'd recommend stopping in to try them out. read more

Our first time here, and this is a great one of a kind place. Their food, everything we tried was super delicious. Not sure how they can make the orders so fats while they were full. The fastest service I have ever seen. Waiters were good, not excellent but good, nothing that would cause a complaint, but excellent for me is never to ask for water refill, and I had to do that more than once. But again, it's not something to complain about. As for the atmosphere, music is good and not too loud even though you hear it loudly, but not annoying. The vibe felt like Lebanese nights, everyone having fun. We were at a time that an oriental dancer came in, not my highlight of the evening but sure she was a nice touch and change to traditional boring dinner. My husband took me here last night for a much-needed date night, and I was so impressed by both the food and the ambiance! It has been a long time since I've had a meal this good. I am mainly plant-based, and they had a fair amount of shareable plates for me to choose from. Everything was delicious. We tried the vegetarian tostada, mezze platter, chickpea stew (so unique!), beet salad, sweet potato fries, and baklava. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd highly recommend the veggie tostada and the chickpea stew. Service was fast and attentive for the most part. I'm always looking to try out new places in the East Bay and was excited to stop by Stereo41 on a Wednesday night. The Middle Eastern/Japanese concept seemed really interesting and I wondered how the combination would play out. Overall while I think there's some room for improvement, there's definitely a lot of potential here! The space itself is lovely - beautifully designed with music playing at the perfect volume. Service was good but at times a bit slow. We chalked this up to the restaurant's fairly fresh opening and figure things will run more smoothly as time goes on. When it comes to food, my partner and I both agreed that there was a bit of a gap - the items we ordered that leaned more Japanese left us the tiniest bit disappointed, while there seemed to be a much stronger command of the Middle Eastern dishes. Nothing was bad by any means, but we definitely left feeling like if we were to come back, we'd stick to the Middle Eastern bites. Some quick notes on our order: FOOD * Trout Sashimi: Good but was missing...something. The fish didn't taste as fresh as I would've liked, but the accompanying sauce was great. Feel like this has potential. * Mushroom Kushiyaki: Kind of similar to the Trout, the sauce was good but I felt like the overall depth of flavor wasn't quite there. * Kofta Kushiyaki: First standout dish we had! There are only two pieces, but they were both so flavorful, juicy, and well executed. They paired great with the Sweet Potato Tempura. * Sweet Potato Tempura: Another standout! This dish is fairly simple, but it's done SO well. The crunch on these sweet potatoes is fantastic and the drizzles of honey are perfect - just enough to accent but not make things overly sweet. Was a great contrast to the savoriness of the Kofta. Comes with a side of harissa but I honestly loved the potatoes as they were. * Slow-Cooked Barramundi: Was a little surprised by the portion-size. It felt fairly small for an entree and the presentation could use a little work. Luckily the flavor of the fish and squash were pretty fantastic - the fish had a nice crust without being overcooked and the squash brought a nice brightness to each bite. The curry portion (served in a separate container that's meant to be poured over) felt a little forgettable. The flavors didn't do much for the rest of the dish, as if it was optional. * Stewed Chickpeas: Such a lovely side-dish! Incredibly rich flavors. Not sure if it's included as a part of one of the dishes on the menu that we didn't get, but feel like it's worth getting individually. DRINKS * Sea Witch: I love most mezcal drinks so I was fairly content with this, but I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't really pick up on the coconut fat-wash, dashi, or yuzu. Mezcal can be a bit overpowering, so I mostly just got some citrus and mezcal flavor-wise. * Black Honey: This drink surprisingly tasted more watered-down when it was first served, and got better as time went on. The burnt honey and black sesame similarly take a bit of a back seat and are hard to pick up on distinctly, but as the bourbon flavor took more form it was a fairly enjoyable drink. * Dubai Alexander: By far the standout item of the night - I'd consider stopping by again just to have this drink! The cocoa/pistachio/cream combo is so fantastic and makes for a dessert cocktail dream - I had to force myself to not down the whole thing. The bits of flakey salt and what I assumed were crushed pistachio bits really added a nice contrast to the drink's sweetness. It took a while for us to get this drink (there was only 1 bartender working that night) but our waiter told us it'd be worth the wait, and it really was. A quick note that as this does lean more sweet and creamy, I think it'd go best towards the end of your dinner. Just a personal preference though! All things considered we enjoyed our night! While we might not be itching to go back right away, I can see us visiting again some time in the future. With some tinkering I think this menu (both food and drinks) could turn into something really special. read more

Our table enjoyed firsts of Hamachi tostada, Vegetable tostada, Marinated mussels and Couscous and Falafels. The HT and Mussels were my favorites! For mains, we had the Slow cooked Barramundi, Orzotto (with cauliflower) melted in my mouth and friends enjoyed the Lamb Merguez entree. The interior is spacious and well-suited for large groups. - Solid food execution. The lamb kabob was tender, and the trout sashimi tasted fresh. - Warm service. Staff was friendly and attentive. ---------- The less good: - Lack of focus. Stereo41 touts itself as "Japanese-Mediterranean fusion," but the menu feels scattered, jumping from sashimi starters to kabobs and mezze platters with no attempt to bridge the gap. The only dish that leaned "fusion" was the barramundi with Japanese curry and squash, but both the flavor and presentation lacked "wow" factor. The mushroom skewers (button mushrooms and scallions brushed with soy and sugar) were particularly underwhelming and felt like something I could easily make at home. The hummus tasted like 90% tahini with the dreams of a chickpea in the midst. - Cocktails that overpromise. The basil-lemongrass drink unfortunately tasted more like Theraflu than a balanced cocktail. - An identity crisis. The art was neither Japanese nor Mediterranean, a glittery disco ball hung from the ceiling, and there was a DJ spinning sets throughout the night. Is this a restaurant? A lounge? A club? Ultimately, the experience felt jarring -- not because anything was outright bad, but because the food, art, music, ambiance, and concept never quite came together. It reminded me of Ciaorigato in SF (another Japanese-fusion spot, this time with Italian cuisine), which raises the same question: are we going to da club or a restaurant? We have walked by seeing it get built since the beginning and tonight we are finally inside. Nice spot. It's amazing what you can do with an old PG&E building. I think back then if there was a bar on the premise more people would come in to pay their bill. I know I would and I don't even live here. We were the first to sit at the bar today but soon the bar was packed out. People stared coming in and filling tables. It does get full as the night goes on. For drinks my partner had the Sassanid Smash and a Stereo Martini. As a 1 trick pony I stayed with tried and true tequila and lime. For food we had the  Hamachi tostada, a dozen oysters and trout sashimi. All excellent. The Hamachi tostada was incredible. Two corn tortillas, umami mayo, chile and avocado. I think there was some kind of special secret sauce also cause I could eat that all day an night. Massive amount of Hamachi also. Nice artwork all around by one of the owners. Multiple turn tables in a permanent DJ set up playing vinyl. Sound was not overpowering so you could still have a conversation. There's an outside patio with heat lamps but tonight at 44 degrees, I don't think so. All was great but the clientle at the bar was a mix of very self important individuals ranging from espousing the ingredients for the very first martini to people talking about exotic recipes they were cooking and a few fine people making sure everyone overheard their nonsense. I initially was going with a 5 but after thinking about it going with a 4. Here's what needs to be fixed. 1. The menu is great, just not enough of a menu. We didn't try any of the bowls but nothing really here for a solid dinner. 2. Yelp description is Middle Eastern, lounges, Japanese. Great but no lounges. Pre opening buzz sounded like an awesome night life experience and I think even bringing a little bit of Vegas to the DubC, instead we have a very nice bar and seating at your mama's diner. Some booths along the wall. So I think keep some tables but transform the the area just past the check-in area with some low continuous couches and low cocktail tables. And dim the lights. I ate there once i expected better for their steep prices! The food was decent but not great! I did like the tempura sweet potatoes fries appetizer with hirassa dressing. When I ate there I got a lot more then when I came a month later & ordered tempura sweet potatoes to go with tax came to over $20 & all i got was 7, you read it right 7 measly pieces, WTH!!! The rent is so high you need to skimp & price gauge on your customers, what a shame!!! Also I fealt the staff did not live up to the high end /posh restaurant they are trying to portray, just being honest! read more
