I had a very strange experience here. While cleaning out my wallet I found a gift card for steam dot I received last Christmas. The next time I was in the area I went in to use it. I ordered and handed the cashier my gift card and looked at me like I was from another planet. "Haven't seen one of these in awhile" he said an put it in a drawer and stared at me. WTF? I calmly think and ask him why he didn't run it. Apparently they went to a new system (Square which I thought they had last time) and could not read my gift card and therefore would not honor it. Sooo, this brings up many questions about this business, do they really have no way of dealing with gift cards sold under an old system and this is how they treat customers that bought them? It's not like a dusted off a coupon from the 70's and demanded they take it, this gift card was less than a year old! Long story short, I told him the card hadn't been used and there was $25 on it. After some skeptical questions and a long call to his manager he agreed to issue a NEW gift card. Wow! What service! I'd say I'd go back a year later and see what new system they have and if it takes this new gift card, but I wont be back. This place once seemed modern and cool now has a distinctively less sophisticated, less friendly vibe, the people working there clearly didn't give a shit, and that seems consistent with other recent reviews I've seen. Steam Dot is the best roaster/coffee shop in the state. They are a true purist coffee shop with a full slow bar and a wide variety of coffee options. They have a very knowledgeable staff that will do an amazing job explaining all the different coffee options and can take you on a trip around the world with the various coffees they feature. read more

I have tried Steam Dot twice. and Not a good experience either time. both Times My coffee was cold. and the size of coffe I requested I did not get. the employees are very rude. I will be going to Cafe Del Mundo or Kaladi Bros. before I ever step foot into Steam Dot again. read more

Another fine cup of coffee and one of the cleanest back of house coffee shops I've ever seen. Evening is a great time to come in when the crowds are gone and it's quiet. Only comment today was the milk was steamed under temp for my latte today, but the flavorful espresso blends they use made up for that. I'll keep coming back. read more

Steamdot was a breathe of fresh air when they opened in Anchorage. The managers and the owners really know what they are doing. Staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice but I would say that the lack of seating was what got me. The layout of it was just a bit off. $4 for a macchiato....not that bad but it wasn't worth it for me(regarding taste and quality). I did enjoy the little heart tho. Third wave coffee is beginning to make its presence felt in Alaska! As someone who has been spoiled by great coffee in NY for the past several years, this is a welcome addition to my hometown. Like other craft coffee shops, there is a focus on the quality of the product. The beans are carefully sourced and roasted locally. If you request a slow brew, the coffee is freshly grinded and brewed using either a V60, Chemex, or siphon. I noticed that some others were confused by the prep time, but that's simply part of the process. Can't rush good coffee. The store is very well spaced with a large bar style seating area cutting through the middle and open tables surrounding. The store caters to the whole spectrum of visitors, except those in a rush or those who want a sugar-blasted caramel frappuccino. Go to Starbucks for that. read more

In addition to this is a induction vacuum system. These options with a single source coffee like columbian badger. Makes a great cuppa. The decor is standard coffeeshop with a bar/ tables and couch lounge area. Seating and space not cramped. BUT it's in a mall. But most things in anchorage are in malls. So. Every time I visit here, I'm underwhelmed. The whole chemex thing is cool; it's evident the owners take proper brewing seriously. Come here if you're in the mood to have a very leisurely coffee-drinking experience. My husband loves this place and I like to surprise him with his favorite drink at work once a week or so. I just want to be able to get a quality mocha with whipped cream to go for him. That's all. I just want to be able to put a lid on the cup without overflowing foaminess everywhere. (I'm not a coffee person, if you're wondering why I don't just gulp down enough to make it fit.) It doesn't matter how many times I gently ask when ordering to have the barista to please leave room for whipped cream so I can put the lid on. Doesn't matter which barista. Doesn't matter if I tip a quarter or a dollar. *The baristas only care about making heart designs on the top of your coffee.* Art over customer satisfaction every time. I'm just so over this joint. I've had too many crappy cups of coffee from Kaladi's in multiple locations in town (albeit the New Sagaya down town and Old Seward Dowling shops have always been of quality but not close to my home.) IT'S IN THE MALL That's really important because the coffee is blessedly good. In fact, when I got here after walking a few miles in November, it was DAMNABLY good. Then after a chemex El Salvador La Providencia and a cold brew it was blessedly good. Staff is intelligent and personable. They know their way around the bar and are knowledgeable in a thoughtful and engaging way. Imaginably I can see someone being put off by the fact they are not drones. YMMV but A+ in my three hour tour of SteamDot. Personally, I feel I am a run of the mill coffee bigot. Nothing special about my predilection for unbutton, non-sour, not sweet dark chocolate after tones. It's just how I am. And I didn't get that here. Maybe it's to be found but I missed it. What I got was not-burnt, not sharp but rounded (and enjoyable) sour midrange with pleasant roasted finish. SteamDot is a sweet coffee shop. Think right-angle roasting geek finds a good coffee niche to work and to deliver the goods. Or something. Missing would have been a disappointment. Highly worth seeking out. read more

My husband and I dropped by here because Black Cup was closed for the holiday. We really enjoyed our experience. He was happy with the wide selection of hoity-toity high maintenance hipster coffees and the variety of brewing methods. I found my latte to be quite delightful. I loved the simple, industrial-inspired ambience (and the fire place!). And the baked good were the bomb! Definitely will be back here- even if it's just to grab a brookie. read more

Hardest review I have written. Well this is the only coffee shop in Anchorage even attempting to leave the 80's and world of burnt coffee so I wanted so bad for them to be awesome. They wanted so bad to be awesome and we were both letdown. The first bad sign was when I asked about the $7 Perci, "is this 90+ ?" they said let me ask; then she came back saying they had no clue but it must be because it was expensive.wth :( The next problem is despite having the best equipment they just didn't deliver good coffee. I had an espresso and it was astringent. She asked sheepishly how is it as if not confident in the shot. Most likely pulled wrong and she knew it. Next the chemex of Kenya was also astringent and flavor descriptors totally wrong. (Look at my photo and see how high the grounds were up on the filter) wth :(. (BTW I ordered based on descriptors). I then ordered the $7 Perci and it was good. But served cooler than acceptable. read more

This place is sweet! Swanky and boojee local roaster that has a large slow bar for tasting unique coffees with fine drip techniques. I ordered an iced soy caramel latte, and it was SUPERB. They take their time making their drinks, so you need to have respect for the craft. Very yummy, and would certainly go back. read more

I really really enjoyed this place. They take their coffee very seriously and it shows. The coffee is in line with some of the best coffees I have had in the States. In addition to that I really like the focus on the coffee and the minimalism in the decor. This place would definitely be highly recommend it to anybody passing through Anchorage. Love it! read more
