The shop is cute but the cafe was meh. I got the drink of the month, which was flavored with some pistachio but it was just ok. Good for the cold but can't remember the flavor anymore. If you want to try some of the teas they sell in the shop before purchasing, they do have some available in the cafe. I was recommended this place for tea and donuts. Since I was coming here around lunchtime I had planned on having lunch since they said they had a cafe with sandwiches and such on their website. The sandwich, bagel, and soup offerings were a little sad and left a lot to be desired unfortunately. They're not fresh and they were just in a to-go case, and if we had time before our next activity we would have gone someplace else. We each got a sandwich (tuna salad, chicken salad) for $7/sandwich and we wished we had just gone to a grocery store which would have been better and cheaper. The fireweed donuts, which are apparently popular, was a pretty pink but just tasted like sugar. The samovar donut was a little better and had a flavor other than sugar, but didn't taste particularly fresh. I think the only thing worth getting was the samovar tea, which is what they're known for. The most prominent flavor to me was cinnamon so if you don't like that you could skip this entirely. Earlier hours for coffee/donuts needed. I realize it's mostly a gift store, and their store looked amazing, but we were looking for an early morning coffee and bite to eat. While we made a different stop for coffee we headed back to try their donuts. They are delicious for sure! I enjoy eating donuts everywhere and the visitor's center suggested me this shop/cafe for all the needs of our family: tea for someone coming down with something, coffee for my sister, and shopping for kiddo and me. If you shop over $25 with visitor center coupon book you get a free donut. With these amazing local flavors I couldn't narrow it down and got the samovar and fireweed. There are a ton of tourist/gift shops in downtown Anchorage...all of them are very similar...except for the Kobuk which feels more historic (because it is) and offers unique tea, donuts, and other treats at their one-of-a-kind spot in the back of the store. When we walked in to the store (in search of donuts) we were immediately handed a sample of their samovar tea which my wife liked so much that she bought a couple packs to take home. We found our way back to the small cafe to be greeted by a display case of delicious-looking donuts, including unique, Alaska-only flavors like Samovar (the spices from the samovar tea included in the donut glaze) and Fireweed. They've got some "regular" flavors too...everything looked really good. We got the samovar and fireweed donuts...we loved them both. My wife also had some of the tea...they've got more baked goods including scones and a daily soup. The place has a long and rich history in Anchorage which you can read about in the displays in the cafe. If you're looking for a unique treat, very good donuts, or souvenirs different from what they have at all the other shops downtown, you definitely should pop in here...it's a wonderful bit of Anchorage history to experience. read more

The seating in the cafe is limited so not ideal for group settings, but perfect for 2 or to pick up and go. Customer service: The staff at the cafe and store were all helpful and friendly. I have been going to go Kobuk since I was a kid and it's been one of my favorite places to find unique gifts and of course delicious candy. I brought my 11 year old with me today and I have to say I was quite shocked to see so much of the merchandise has turned into items with curse words all over them. The last time I was in my I remember a few towels with bad words in one corner, but now it was seems to be about half the merchandise! We spotted this little shop as we were walking thru the drizzle in downtown. If I am on foot, and have time, it's almost impossible for me to pass by a tea shop without walking in. So walk in we did, to see if there was any tea I'd be interested in bringing home. They had a lot of loose teas as well as packaged teas available, but the shop was really packed, and walking through was difficult. At the counter in the back, we ordered their spice chai which was pretty good, and tried one of their fireweed glazed donuts which was a little on the sweet side. This is a really cute coffee place tucked in the back of a space that shares a gift shop and a wonderfully aromatic tea shop. Cozy, minimal seating inside. Nice garden for seating when weather allows. Friendly, hard-working staff. The Kobuk is such a great shop. Before I get any further I must say you need to have a donut here if you haven't already. They are freshly made old fashions but idk what it is about them, they are SO good. You can get fireweed, vanilla, birch, and they had a new one made from tea. They have other flavors but it changes often. $2 a piece. Now for the gift shop. This isn't your typical Alaskan trinket store. It has a few Alaskan gifts, like handmade glass ornaments, earrings, stickers, etc. mostly I would call this a boutique shop, not an Alaskan souvenir store. They have many unique items, and there are things everywhere! They've got magnets, jewelry, dish towels, tea, mugs, international candy, gummies, chocolate, a kids section, things for cat and dog lovers, music boxes, seasonal decorations, and more. Lots more! Some things we have found were earrings, stickers, Charlie Brown hot chocolate, violet crumble, and donuts. $5 cars minimum or cash accepted. Works are very nice, it's a family owned business who used to live there as well. I have never gotten anything in the cafe Coffee wise. With COVID you have to order your donuts and pick them up Friday/ saturdays. We were there September 12, 2020 at 10am I imagine if you go later they sell out. read more

Love this small little shop. Been in a few times for coffee in the back, they have baked, sweet treats for purchase too. I'm the front they have tons of bulk candy, gifts, novelties, and unique items from across the pond. They also have a bulk tea and coffee section and lots of tea pots and assorted tea accessories. Super cute tea shop in downtown! There are two parts to this place, the retail shop (which sells their teas and all sorts of tea paraphernalia and cute Alaska souvenirs) and the cafe in the back. They have several of their own teas but their signature and most popular tea is the samovar, which has cinnamon and is naturally sweetened with orange and lemon. You can sample the samovar in the shop. The samovar tea is so good and in the cafe, they also have samovar glazed old fashioned donuts which are some of the best donuts I have ever had. The interior of the cafe is really cute - from the ceiling are a bunch of folded origami cranes. It's a small and cozy space. The samovar tea and the samovar glazed donut were definitely worth a stop here! If you're at the airport with some time to pass - they also have a location at Anchorage airport too! read more

I'm born and raised in Alaska so I'd like to think I have a pretty good idea of where to go if you'd like to find something "hidden" and unique. The Kobuk, although small, is one of the most enchanting stores I've ever been in. It's a rare spot that pulls you in and and makes you feel like you've found treasure. When you walk in, a warm , spicy yet sweet scent greets you and it's a smell I've never had replicated as belongs to The Kobuk alone. There are three areas, one side of the store is a gift shop, the other is filled with old and new fashioned candies and there is something there for everyone. Towards the back you'll find the donuts, teas, and coffees. I love their donuts, I can't pick a favorite between the raspberry and fireweed but if you visit and see this comment, I'd love to know! read more

The lighting is warm and the place is pretty stuffed with...stuff. You would not want to be a bull in this China Shop. Lots of trinkets and what-nots, but the good kinds. This isn't a place for plastic junk and gag T-shirts! There is a smaller off-shoot room in the back where you can get teas, coffees, and baked goods. It's pretty much a coffee shop within a gift shop. Warning: there is a $5 minimum on credit cards. I wasn't able to sample their coffee since I didn't have cash and I can't eat any of their baked goods (which I would've used to boost the cost above the $5 threshold). Downtown hidden gem. There is a gift shop up front, but venture into the rear of the ship and there lies a little coffee stand. They serve awesome teas, hand leafed, and mixed in whatever way you ask them. They are so patient and accommodating. I found the secret tea, the SAMOVAR tea. I love cinnamon and they have a tea that was my favorite. It was so good and lived up tot the hype. Don;t forget to try the "fireweed" glazed old fashioned donuts. Hand made in small batches with local "fireweed". It's a local plant that tastes like a berry, and is featured in some small shops in homemade ice cream and donuts like they have here. We were in town at Anchorage brewery and a couple we met strongly recommend we try this spot before we left, specifically the fireweed . The next morning we checked online and it said they opened up at 12pm. Assuming because of the winter hours ? Nonetheless, we had breakfast elsewhere but right at noon we went in and it did not disappoint. Although it was at noon they did not have a lot left over so not entirely sure if the online hours were correct at that point. We ordered 3 old fashioned but only 2 were left so we decided on the fireweed. Fireweed was by far the best flavor I've ever had ! I was told it was on the sweeter side which is why it was not my first option but I'm so glad I got to try it. It's the perfect amount of sweetness and not overpowering. Come for the cute touristy trinkets, stay for the homemade donuts. Seriously, their donuts are the best in town, particularly the birch syrup-glazed old-fashioned ones. The little café area in the back of the store is small but a nice place to enjoy a drink while you're downtown. Along with pastries they also have espresso and a wide variety of teas. The Kobuk is also a great place to stop for some unique Alaskan gifts. There's a lot of beautiful arts and crafts made by artists from around the state.
