Stopped here for a coffee & a snack in the morning... they have a variety of coffees and also milk alternatives... coffee is nice & strong... they have a small sitting area which is nice... the service is a little slow when they are busy so just be aware if you see a line it will be a bit...

Today marks the first day of mask freedom, so we celebrated by eating and drinking at great spots. Dark Horse Coffee is at the top of the list. The decor is great-- comforting yet practical. However, it is the brilliant suggestions and craftsmanship by the baristas that makes this place special. I had the Butter Cream; a brilliant mixture that made me squeak with delight. Yummy. Totally recommend.

so happy i stumbled upon this cafe. The 2 ladies behind the counter were phenomenal. The variety in drinks is superb. I ordered the avocado toast and it was so delicious and filling. The latte was great!

I had a dirty chai latte and sat and read the complimentary newspaper. It's a cute place and the service was friendly.

Very nice coffee shop in downtown Anchorage. Great coffee of the day and cappuccino. My husband had a filling breakfast sandwich on a everything bagel. I had oatmeal with all the fixings-delicious! Nice decor, indoor and outdoor seating with capable WiFi. A bit unclear how to "line up" and order/make selections especially on a busy weekday morning.

If the other coffee shops in town are too "hipster" or "modern" or "like the ones in Seattle", then Dark Horse is the place for you. This downtown coffee shop is unapologetically old school. It's got a worn, homey feel. Carpet, old Alaska art, and purple cabinets. It's much smaller inside that it looks like from the exterior. You'll find all sorts of people here. Everyone from yuppies grabbing a latte before work to people that may or may not be asking for change on the street corners. WiFi isn't fast, but is above average and not frustrating. Coffee is good. I'm a poor judge of coffee though, so I don't know how I'd rank it against other spots in town.

I'd been wanting to go here for the longest time, having seen someone having an afternoon tea through the window. Finally today, we decided to go. I was sure they did lunch items, but couldn't find a menu anywhere. The server apologized and handed me a menu, and pointed out the soup specials. Husband selected the loaded baked potato soup, and I chose the curried egg salad sandwich. He got an Americano (because there was no drip available) and I requested English Breakfast Tea, noticing that they had big black tubs of teas around the shelves. I requested skim milk (it wasn't available) and had to settle for whole milk. At this stage I'll point out that I am 100% English, I moved here in 2012, and it's difficult to get a good strong cup of English Breakfast Tea in town (The Perfect Cup was a noticeable exception to this, and were indeed the perfect cup of strong English black tea) but I had high hopes for somewhere called a Tea Lounge. His coffee was served quickly, but I waited a while for my tea. It arrived with the milk already in it, and had virtually no colour at all, so I could instantly tell, it wasn't strong enough. I took a sip, couldn't taste any tea, and I took it to the counter and asked for an extra tea bag. 2 of the counter staff seemed to need to deal with this issue, and kept my mug of tea behind the counter, and I was sent to the cashier to pay $5 for a brand new cup to be made. I'm quite outraged by this. I had already paid for the tea, my tea was made wrong, I was happy to pay to add an extra tea bag, or leaves to the cup I already had, or have them remake it to my liking, but I am aghast to have to pay twice for one mug of tea. After another wait, the tea was brought to the table - no milk, so I asked for milk. A jug of milk was brought, but no spoon to stir with. Again, this was weak tea. I have tea bags sent to me from home, I make it for myself every morning. This was weak tea. I had asked them to make the second mug STRONG. Am I not making myself clear? Anyway, the dining room was mostly empty, a reserved table's customers came in, and there was a guy sitting in a corner space. We had to wait an interminably long time, for a bowl of soup and cold sandwich requiring no cooking. The server brought the soup out 1st, soup splashed all over the plate. It was a nice big bowl. However, the potatoes in this soup are not baked potatoes, they're boiled. The bacon has not been cooked prior to putting it in the soup. And every other time I've had loaded baked potato soup, it's got a creamy broth. This is a runny broth. I love loaded baked potato soup, but that didn't look appealing to me at all. My egg salad sandwich followed, I was even more disappointed by this I think. I believe this egg salad is prepared in a food processor, as there are no discernible pieces of egg, it's kind of like a spread if you will, and a very thin one. A smear on one side of the bread. However if you love arugula, and tomatoes, you'd like this sandwich, because they are violently, aggressively abundant with it, to the point that I could not taste any curried egg salad whatsoever. I'll stick to making my own, at home, I shred the egg in a grater so there aren't big chunks of egg, but it still has the egg salad flavour. This was bland. Like I say, all I could taste was arugula. Best thing about this - the potato chips were fresh. I do feel VERY disappointed and let down by my experience today. It was an expensive lunch, an even more expensive mug of mediocre tea, which is ludicrous in a place calling themselves a Tea Lounge. I won't be revisiting, no matter how pretty the space.

I came here for high tea which was something new, so I had no point of reference on what to expect. Overall, I'd give it a B. The food items were good and presented in an attractive way, and I felt very ladylike eating such dainty little treats! Plenty enough for two people, I even took some home. An entire small pot of tea plus a free re-steeping is included in the cost of your ticket. Price wise, I would say everything was more than reasonable for Anchorage. My only complaint, and I'm not sure I would even call it that? is that our server seemed a little unfamiliar with the operation. In her own world a lot. Ended up cashing ourselves out at the front which was probably preferred anyway I'm sure I will be back.

Unfortunate that this is the day I decided it was about time I left a review for House Of Bread…read more House of Bread is a lovely space, airy light dining room, and lots of baked goods, and artisanal-looking jarred goods. It feels very open. They have a menu on the wall, and a chalkboard with the types of bread available that day. Husband orders cheesy broccoli soup, and she tells him "it's not really cheesy broccoli soup, it's got lots of veggies in it too" ok, he says, but still orders a bowl. I choose Tuna Salad, and I select 14 grain as my bread choice - "sorry, we're out of that", so I then choose 9 grain - "sorry, we're out of that", and so I ask for marbled rye - "sorry, we're out of that too" I'm really quite surprised, as it's 12.30 like prime lunch time, and they're out of 3 breads already? Maybe cross them off your chalkboard, so you don't have to keep disappointing people. So i choose focaccia with my fingers crossed, and all was well. The order was complete at 12.36. We sit. We wait. Twiddling our fingers. By 20 minutes I'm becoming impatient, because I'm hangry, and the dining room is not that full - maybe 5 tables. As there are 4 staff working behind the counter (could be more round the back in the bakery) I think service could be faster, to dish up a bowl of premade soup, and assemble a cold tuna salad sandwich. Anyway i get my eye on the young man making sandwiches. He's not wearing gloves, is running his fingers through his hair, and touching his face. I see a sandwich that was on the top of the shelf, and it either fell, or he threw it, onto presumably a bench below, and then reach up angrily for a new bag of bread, I don't know - maybe he made it wrong, and was starting over. By 1.02, (26 minutes later) husband could take it no more and went to get a refund. This is not the review I expected to be leaving today, as I've never had service like this here before. I've never gone here before and had to choose my bread 4 times, due to them running out. I've never had to wait so long for lunch using pre-made ingredients. I don't know what was going on, but it's nothing like all the other times we've been here, and I hope it's a one off. If I go back and see the same staff, I'll just walk straight out again and avoid another experience like this one.

My friend wanted to stop by on her way from work & I remembered how impressed I was back in the Fall. I don't know what happened between then and now but I won't be going back. We stopped in just after 5pm, Thursday April 2nd. I saw a few things I was interested in buying for the family, but I had the feeling someone was staring at us. I looked up and saw the younger girl with multi-colored hair glaring at us while the older girl with colored hair was stacking chairs on tables. Google said they closed at 6pm, so I'm assuming she was mad we were interrupting their pre-close. After seeing the flattest "brownies", flatter than a cookie, the soggy zucchini bread with no date on the wrapper, the glare from the young girl behind the register and not one single "Hi" from the 3 employees working, ( the 3rd one was eating a sandwich behind the counter), I decided not to buy a single thing & not to ever come back. My friend bought 4 items & the glaring girl only spoke when she said the total, not even a "Would you like a bag?", "Thank You", "Enjoy your bread" or "Have a good night." Too bad. My friend & I were looking forward to having a coffee & snack & catching up after work.
