What a great store for a tourist like me. We were looking for all those little Nicknacks that you want when you're out of town and want to bring something home for your friends and family. I visited this store today with my elderly mother to look for souvenirs for family out of town. Upon entering I was greeted by the clerk, I looked around, and I didn't see anything I wanted. When walking out I passed the register and the clerk accusatively said, "You gonna pay for those socks?" Implying that I had shoved something in my pocket and was shoplifting, which I had certainly not. He continued to do so, causing a scene, until I offered to show him what I had in my pockets, jacket, etc. (No socks). He was extremely unprofessional and rude and no customer should have to go through such an experience. As a local I will never return to this store and discourage anyone from doing so. Management should seriously consider this man's employment. read more

They've made a lot of improvements to this store recently and are carrying more and more Alaskan-made or Alaskan-designed products, which is awesome, rather than the crap they sell at Polar Bear gifts across the street which is all made in China. I'm not saying some of the stuff here isnt made in China, but a lot of it is made or designed locally. Instead of cramming the store full of junk they have hand-picked some of the better items that you would have had to look in all the other gift shops for. It's all the things you would expect to find, keychains, jewelry, tshirts, blankets, handmade mugs, kitchenware, calendars (ohhhh theres some good ones- look for the shrimp calendar!), handmade soaps and jellies, salmon, scarves and hats, candy and so on. read more

This boutique has a mix of typical touristy things and unique, more classy items. The cashier was very friendly and made us laugh. It's within walking distance from the Hilton and I would recommend it if you are looking for souvenirs that are on the fancier side. They also have a decent selection of Alaskan books for kids and adults. They have a posting of local events on the window and I was surprised to see the conference I was attending listed/welcomed! read more

This is one of the most well-known tourist shops in Anchorage, and it is a place that many big establishments and cruise ships are going to recommend. It's family owned and tries to stay local to Alaska, but this place just falls short in my mind. I WANT to like this place, I really do. But compared to other shops on fourth avenue this one isn't even, really, worth stopping in at. *sad face Compared to other shops which have HUGE selections, Blue Moose is fairly limited in what they carry. They do have things for people in all price ranges, but they don't necessarily have a huge array. They have some basic clothing, home décor, and knick-knack items- but they don't carry anything vastly different from other tourist shops. They're not unique. With that being said they do carry some convenience items like candy, pop, and a few snacks. Other tourist shops on 4th Avenue don't carry these staples. The front of this shop is very misleading- ridden with traditional touristy items. The back, on the other hand, actually features some very neat handcrafted items including ivory carvings and native crafts like grass baskets. The original owner was the first person to sell ulus (an Alaskan Native knife) on the road system and the stores roots to buying handmade crafts from rural Native Alaskans holds true, even today. They continue to purchase things from Innupiaq crafters in northern AK and feature them in their store. They have a beautiful glass case collection as well as a lot of native art hanging on the walls in the back. I really wish they'd move that specific display to the front of the store as I feel it'd be a better marketing move on their part. If you didn't search in the back for those items, you wouldn't know they had them. I debated walking in, and right back out of this store merely because it looked like, yet another, stereotypical tourist trap. I was happy to find the crafts in the back, but sad that they were stuck in the back. They should be in the front. Unfortunately this shop just felt a bit empty to me, and a little too 'tourist-y' for my liking. There was nothing really unique about it, aside from the fact that YES it is family owned and local. I love supporting local businesses, but, in brutal honesty, the other tourist shops surrounding this establishment are about 5 times better in selection and overall set-up. read more

I have been to this shop about 10 times now over the last few years. It is always very nicely laid out. Lots of interesting merchandise to choose from. The only thing i find is the prices are very high compared to a lot of other shops that are similar. Although i keep going back so it can't be too bad right. They have clothes and books ,dolls, toys, and a lot of interesting unique items so i do recommend it. read more

We visited this store while visiting Alaska and my wife just had to have a pair of NaMOOSEte pajama bottoms. They were out of her size and I was very impressed when Iris volunteered to call another store nearby to see if they had them in stock - then, she went and got them for us, returning within minutes! She was not only helpful to us, but to several other people in our group who encountered her around the same time. Aside from the great customer service by Iris and cute pajama bottoms available for the ladies, they have lots of other neat souvenir items as well. read more

Anchorage has a lot of similar gift shops, but OIABM stands out for having the widest selection of locally-made (or at least American-made) goods. I'm rarely in the market for little gifts, but if I get something, I want it to be unique. I was kinda surprised at how many things in these shops were made in China. The other day I broke my favorite souvenir shot glass from my trip to Bethel,AK. Devastated I searched on the Internet for about an hour looking for a replacement and I finally found one! Package arrived promptly in NY and was nicely wrapped with a cute thank you note inside. Overall it was a great experience. read more

Went to the Seward store because big signs said sale. We picked out several item and were quickly told no sale for two weeks. Your kidding right? No we were told, then why say sale when in fact no sale was planned for two weeks. We left the store with several people that heard our conversation with the owners. Stay clear of this store in Seward and Anchorage. They are rip off artists with inflated prices. read more
