Male individual in our travel group entered this establishment with a medical mask due to underlying medical related issues and the employee/owner (?) made a racist, bias, prejudice comment, "The way you look I am thinking this is a hold up". Really? Would you say this if a lighter skin tone person or a Caucasian appearing person entered with a medical mask on? Given all that is happening in our societies and nationally with race and violence/guns, and much more the treatment experienced abhorrent and someone needs to provide a teachable moment to this person. Kindness and respect for all people regardless of skin tone or race goes a long ways-you know what we all learned in preschool? Most everyone that works here is so nice and knowledgeable. Alaska Mint is the official mint for the state of Alaska, it's privately owned by a really terrific family, all of the workers (though not related to one another) are so comfortable that they feel like a family. If you're looking for a souvenir that is out of the ordinary,check this place out for a beautiful piece of jewelry, gold nuggets, rare gold quartz and/or pure silver or gold medallions that are hand minted at the actual "store" Most everything here is pretty spendy, but it's also rare, unique and hand crafted with a long time guarantee. You'll also find a few less expensive items such as ULU knives, gold pokes, shark tooth necklaces etc. So if you're shopping for a kid you can find something that's affordable and different, for an adult, definitely rare and memorable. I was pleasantly surprised by this shop found on 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage. It's in the main area for tourist shops, but its local's favorite spot as well. It's the only jewelry / gold supplier in Alaska that I know of, who buys their own nuggets and produces their own jewelry and gold collectible / investment items. I've been in here a few times, and each time- I've been impressed. Most recently I entered the shop on the 29th of December and was promptly greeted by one employee asking if she could help me find anything. I told her I was just looking and she politely left me alone. I later returned and asked if they had gold bars on display. One of the ladies working quickly and happily showed me to the gold bar she had available, and gave me about a 15 minute speech on Alaska Mint's products including all of their Alaskan coins, US coins, and other investment items. She went so far as to let me hold the bar of gold. She then proceeded to show me around the rest of the shop, introducing me to items that I didn't realize Alaska Mint carried. Alaska mint has an array of jewelry items featuring a ton of Alaskan-harvested materials. They have jade, amber, gold, silver, soapstone, quartz, rose quartz- and others that I'm sure I'm forgetting. Everything in this store is beautiful quality and you'll find both traditional and more modern pieces. There are plenty of gorgeous items with an Alaskan theme behind them, but also many items that feature less-location-based designs. One of the most unique (and popular) items they carry are raw gold nuggets. Each nugget comes with a certification from the Alaska Mint stating that it's real gold as well as a bit of info on Alaska's gold industry. It also comes with a map of Alaska with a little red 'x' on the place where that particular nugget was found. This place is FULL of beautiful items, but it's well organized and all of the displays beautifully showcase everything in a way that is easy to view. They have something for everyone's taste and the employees are eager to help and very kind. I wasn't necessarily dressed in high class clothing when I arrived at this shop, but that didn't deter the employees from giving me a fair amount of attention and showing me all they had to offer. The fact they took me seriously as a customer, even though I didn't appear to be someone who'd buy something, did not go unnoticed. That kind of service is always 5 stars in my book, but the fact that they also carry an array of high quality, beautiful, local-to-Alaska items just made them all the better. read more

Stopped in twice in June 2023 during Alaska trip from the Lower 48 and found the Mint owners and staff to be professional, knowledgeable, and transparently informative about the local area, history, precious metals and jewelry market. Reliable, unbiased information can be challenging to come by in the precious metals and gem sectors but Mike and Chris were both genuine and clearly invested in their areas of expertise with a transparent assessment. I learned an incredible amount and highly recommend for individuals and tour groups alike to visit!!! They offer unique items across a wide-range of collectible interest areas with legitimate value, often one-of-a-kind pieces as well. So at a minimum, it's worth picking up a minted coin, especially one of their own stamps as well as checking out their online offerings for future non-local purchasing opportunities. Given the chance, my favorite place to pass some time is at the Alaska Mint, on 4th Ave. I love to browse their estate jewelry as well as their creative coins and quartz pieces. There are so many unique finds! The ambiance is inviting and warm because the staff is awesome! (The espresso corner helps too!) If you're going to buy coins, dont' go anywhere else. This is the official Alaskan mint. They have a good stock of silver, bronze and gold coins here. They also have a discount rack of 50% off coins because they are from an older year. The odd thing is that they have a fixed price of their coins whereas normal mints have a market price based on the gold price for that day. Fixed price doesn't really work with authentic metal whose value changes every day. Service: The service was ok. The manager was hovering over us a lot when we were browsing and generally not a very smily person. Ambience: There is no where to sit or rest while the other family members browse which sucks. read more

I love going to this place - it's great to look around - they've got really cool displays - both for jewelry and coins, j never get tired of it. I've bought wonderful customized coins for special events - son's high school graduation, parents 50th anniversary, and Christmas - and to give relatives for Alaska souvenirs. Alaska Mint did an excellent job repairing my wife's engagement and wedding rings. I once used Michael's Jewelers for repairs, but they no longer work on jewelry not purchased from them. They recommended Alaska Mint to me. Alaska Mint's price was reasonable and they shipped the rings back to me (I live in rural Alaska) more quickly than expected.
