This place is a GEM. No clue how it had only four stars. Hands down best place for unique, not generic gifts. I am repelled by touristy shops filled with the same, mass produced, tacky crud. This place blows all of that out of the water. Fur, gems, jewelry, sculptures spill out of every crevice. I absolutely love the $25 rabbit hide that I bought as well as a small vial of 24K Alaskan gold for about $6. I could spend up to 2 hours perusing every glass case here and the employees were very knowledgeable on their products.

My cousin was recently visiting and on the hunt for an Eskimo Yo-Yo after wishing she had purchased one on her previous trip. AK Fur Exchange was my first thought and they did indeed have them. Walking into the store has an incredible entry, filled with hunting trophy's, some of which were for sale. Not all of them were Alaskan animals, many were from other countries, which I found odd. The store is packed to the gills with art, collectibles, clothing, coats, decor and even hides for you to do your own crafts. Pretty cool overall. It was very tightly packed in there, and a bit difficult to move around in spots. Throughout the store there were some additional oddly out of place things, like a mounted raccoon face... we don't have raccoons in AK. I know they tried to transplant them once upon a time without luck... again, just weird. We asked about the yo-yo and ended up picking one up at the somewhat steep price of $30. Along with that, a walking stick that wasn't priced and she looked at a couple others and said $99 like the others, but then after we showed her the differences, they took it down to $50. Overall, some pretty decent local stuff, but I'd definitely look it over and make sure it's local, if you're not sure.

I cannot recommend this place more highly. The customer service was exemplary. While they did have probably 300 Tlingit hand drums in stock, they didn't have any with a fox motif. The owner took me into the office and found an image that he then gave to the local artist to create for me OVERNIGHT!! I am so pleased with this purchase and this store.

This was the information given by the store of how, when and who collected the tusks and did the art.

If you are looking for unique souvenirs or truly Alaskan items such as furs Eskimo artifacts and art this is the best place in Alaska. They don't advertise and I was on a search for a particular item and was told by a local Alaskan "this is the place the locals go to find unique items". About 35 years ago on my first visit to Alaska I saw native artwork that was walrus tusks scrimshawed mounted in the Front of the facial skeleton of the walrus. These can be collected and sold only by Eskimos and must be Scrimshawed to be sellable. Back then I wanted to buy it but didn't - so now I was on the search to find it again. I was on a three week trip in Alaska and spent every day I could inquiring or looking in stores For this type of art. I was told over and over again that even though people that seen these in the past that the art of doing them was not seen anymore. I was talking to a waitress at a restaurant in Anchorage and she was very nice to look up which she thought was the best place to go to possibly find something like this and she said this is where all the locals go to find unique items and has the best prices. So on the way back from Fairbanks and Dinali we start at this store the Alaska for exchange and we're taken back by all the items and unique cultural artwork. Fortunately they had to walrus face tusks art. One was a newer art and they had an older one from a estate from 1970 which was perfect for what I was looking for, so I purchased it. My sons fell in love with the store - one got some fur another one got some artifacts from a dig at a 10,000 year old site for Eskimos and I got my girlfriend slippers made from Mink fox. I've been in souvenir shops from one end of Alaska to the other and even though I've seen some of the items in other stores but nothing like the items at his place. If you're looking for an Alaskan pot holder or some other common souvenir item you can get that anywhere this place is about the unique and the quality. I was fortunate and talking to the family while I was there a mother and son run the store and it's been in existence for many years. The whole staff was very helpful in showing everything that the store had and helped us make our selections. The son also help pack everything to be shipped to my home which only took a couple days everything came in perfect. If you're in Anchorage and you're looking for something unique, not the typical, this is the place to go.

Why this is my favorite store in Anchorage- 1) They have the best collection of old and new, cheap and luxury , native and tourist 2)The staff are the special combination of knowledgeable, friendly , and never snobbish. They are considerate of every budget presented to them. 3) old , young, and in between can all be entertained here.

I found this business online while researching Anchorage before my trip. I had high hopes for this place. I came here in search for an oosik. It took me a while to find them. Since they cost $70 to $200 I expected to see them in a glass case. They were piled on the floor like a stack of twigs under a case displaying unrelated merchandise. I saw several employees but none of them greeted me or offered to help me. The oosiks were unlabeled so I could not tell what animal they came from. When buying fossilized genitalia, I like to know who the previous owner was. If they weren't interested in help me buy a $150 bone, I wasn't going to beg them. The room with the furs looked pretty good. The beaver pelts were soft and appeared well priced. They had a museum quality stuffed wolf that I would love to own if I had the place to put it and $3200 to spare. I saw some other interesting things but couldn't examine the because there was a "do not touch" sign. Since none of the many people visible in the office didn't come out to help me I didn't touch or consider buying. This store had some interesting things at what appeared to be reasonable prices. If you know what you want, it seems to be an OK place to pick up a fur, fossil or hat. If you are inexperienced in the type of wares they sell, you would have better luck on 4th or 5th avenues downtown.

We showed up about 15m before they closed on a Friday night. Walked in, about 4 women on staff. No one greeted us. Walked around trying to comprehend what we were looking at for about 5 minutes. I knew they were closing soon so I went up to a tall lady with curly hair and asked her to explain to me what was native and what wasn't . We wanted to buy local it was like I was bugging her. She was condescending, just bad... I can dish it out too lady. So the backhand comments start, then she walked away and started talking bad about us to another lady. I truely don't understand when retail shops hire people with zero customer service habits. Spent 60.00 on some crap and left. Yup, we are tourists, but people like that lady took money out of the mouths of local artist that probably deserve a lot better. Side note before we left i made it clear we came to spend money to a blonde (very nice lady and possibly a native lady) both did a fantastic job and tried to break down what all the local artist items were but by that time it was closing time. They asked us to come back today at 10am but unfortunately our flight leaves at that time. Or we would have come back and bought 1k plus of gifts for our family. It's your business, do as you please. But when out of towners come and want to support local I'd imagine it's your bread and butter? Best of luck . Oh, your store had an amazing inventory, we should have got there earlier to spend more time and understand the culture.
