I went to this store with my brother to get some changfen. It is quite close to my home. It was quiet in the morning, not many people were there. Even though inside it was not very big, the atmosphere felt nice and warm, especially in a cold, windy fall morning. I got an egg steamed rice roll with scallions and bean sprouts ,while my brother had a pork one with nothing added. The changfen were still warm when we got home, and they looked amazing! The texture was a little springy and sticky, and it tastes so good with the soy sauce.I'd recommend to add the bean sprouts ( it is free) , because they gave the changfen an extra lightness and crunch, making it flavorful and refreshing at the same time.
Been searching everywhere for anything that can be comparable to the rice rolls I've had in Guangzhou and these are it. I drive from Queens just to eat the rice rolls from here. They're super thin, soft, chewy, and have a fragrant rice taste. I've tried all the well known ones (west rice rolls king, joe's , fu yuan, yin ji...etc) and none are as good as here. The ladies are friendly and food is made fresh to order. Recommend: pork w/ green onions and cilantro --can't speak for the other meats since I haven't tried them. The pork is well marinated and does not have any unpleasant odor like some of the other places I've tried. Cash only -- but you can order for pickup from Fantuan if you forget to carry cash
BLUF: Good; 3.75 out of 5 stars. Make sure you specify add-ons, otherwise you'll receive a plain roll. I love cheung fun (腸粉) -- Cantonese-style rice noodle rolls. So I'm super happy that dedicated rice noodle roll shops have been popping up all over New York City. Steam Box Rice Roll offers decent rice rolls -- I think they rate somewhere between Fu Yuan's, which are on the thicker side; and Joe's Steam Rice Roll's, which are slightly thinner and more delicate. Joe's seems to have higher quality proteins, too. Steam Box's menu is geared towards those more culturally knowledgeable, as the menu lists the variety of rolls available with add-ons on the bottom of the page, almost as an afterthought. Without add-ons, the rice noodle rolls are rather plain. Consider getting cilantro, scallion, egg, and lettuce for most of the rolls, including beef and roast pork. The enoki mushroom and watercress add-ons are a bit too chewy to accompany the delicateness of the rice noodles.
I was looking for breakfast in this area and learned about Steam Box on Yelp. Not sure what I was expecting but their rice rolls definitely exceeded it! I got the beef rice rolls and char siu bbq pork rice rolls, and both were solid!! The texture of their rice rolls was very on point - chewy and thin but not too soft. They gave us generous amounts of meat for both. The beef was already seasoned and better with a little touch of soy sauce. I actually preferred it without any additions, compared to the char siu one with cilantro, sprouts, egg, and scallions. Also got a chance to try their century egg and pork congee. Appreciated how the pork slices were actually lean pork and how the congee wasn't too starchy. You know this place is legit cause they have white pepper available on each table! Our yuen yeung drinks unfortunately were not good. It was like watered down milk, barely with any tea taste, let alone coffee. Still enjoyed my meal though and portions were bigger than expected. Staff were polite and food came out quick. The place is small with a few tables but all were clean. Would come back for more rice rolls if I was in the area!
Small cherng fun store located on 18th Ave Brooklyn Bensonhurst with limited tables and seating. This place is CASH ONLY. Reviewing based off of the cherng fun only. They don't have anything premade so expect a little wait since the cherng fun is made to order. I recommend calling ahead if you want to place a large order. I think the prices are a little more expensive than what I'm use to. When you place your order, you get to choose if you want to add toppings, if you don't add toppings your cherng fun will come plain as a default aside from the meat/flavor you choose. There's the free option of scallion, cilantro, or bean sprouts. You could add either one or all without additional charge which I thought was nice. They also had premium toppings too for an additional charge. I added scallions to all of the following: - Chicken/Beef: Both meats are good options, solid choice if you're looking for a good cherng fun. The meat is lightly seasoned and they give a good amount in the cherng fun too. - Beef with pickled veggies: My favorite out of the mix so far, the beef paired so well with the pickled veggies. The pickled veggies had a nice crunch to it despite being steamed. I also liked the amount of filling that came with it. - Curry fishballs w/ steamed cherng fun: The curry smells so good, you can taste the curry flavor in the fishballs and they actually had a small kick of spice to it. The order came with 8 fishballs. They drizzle a bit of curry sauce on top but I kind of wished they put more curry sauce because it wasn't enough to coat all the noodles. - Dried shrimp: Classic dried shrimp cherng fun, tad bit on the salty side but still good - Shrimp with salted duck yolk egg: Interesting combo, the grittiness from the salted duck yolk was a bit much and it made the texture of the cherng fun seem a little rough. Probably wouldn't get this unless craving. - Mixed mushrooms: A little bitter? didn't mix that well with the cherng fun. Didn't have a strong umami flavor either. Not horrible but would not recommend. Overall I thought the cherng fun was good. The cherng fun is not the dim sum style, it's the hand rolled/scrapped style. They have a lot of options but of the flavors didn't hit for me. Texture wise, it was very thin and smooth with the right amount of bounce to it. You can tell how thin the rolls are when you really look at it. I thought the soy sauce they provided coated all the layers nicely. It wasn't oily and all the rolls had a nice fragrant rice smell to it. Comparable to Joe's or West King rice roll, close to that quality. I just didn't think they were as stretchy as the other places. Worth trying since the quality is there and there's so many options
Came here on a Monday afternoon and it was pretty open. There are a couple of tables and it's good for dine in or take out. I ordered shrimp, beef and egg rice rolls and they are not the traditional rice roll I usually eat in California. They have a different texture but they taste really good, especially the shrimp rice roll. I don't recommend getting the egg, they have less flavor and texture.
My dad heard about this place from his friends, so we stopped by to grab some rice rolls for a quick snack. Steam Box is a small store front - there's a few small tables but everyone takes it to go for the most part. Each order is about $6, but it is pretty filling. Everything is made to order and they get pretty busy, so expect about a 10-15 minute wait. I didn't love the beef rice rolls (they were a little gamey), but the rice rolls themselves were decent. My dad agreed - they maybe needed a little oil or something because the rice rolls were a bit dry. Curry fish balls here are somewhat disappointing for $5. The fishballs had no snap to them, and the curry was watery. Cash only here.
Very solid little stop to grab some rice rolls, congee, and various appetizers. When I stopped in, the place was empty, but we waited about 15 minutes for our food to be ready. I assume this is because some folks ordered and went to neighboring businesses to do some shopping while they waited. The food here is tasty and fresh. All rice rolls are mafe to order and it is obvious when you take your first bite. This cash only spot also offers a couple of tables in case you wish to eat there as well. I would definitely recommend stopping in and trying a little bit of everything.
This is a pretty solid place to go. I came here with a friend because we were craving rice noodles and this was the closest and was open at 8:30am. The place itself is small, and only has about 4 tables with two chairs at each one. The ordering counter was at the back of the space. She was patient and nice when we ordered. The place itself looked very clean, and there were only two other customers while we were there. We ended up ordering two shrimp rice rolls with fish balls, and a pork and watercress congee. The quality of the rice rolls was amazing. I prefer thicker noodles in general, but I loved the freshness and quality of this one! The shrimp unfortunately was very tiny, and there wasn't much. There were sections of both dishes that didn't have any shrimp in it. The fish balls were Curry flavor. We didn't particularly want Curry, we thought she had regular fish balls and she didn't correct us when we ordered. The receipt also said "fish balls" so we didn't question it. They were a bit spicy and also very small in size, but they tasted okay. The congee was pretty good. The flavor was perfect and the pork was tender and not too dry. The watercress was a bit bitter, but it wasn't too overpowering even though there was a lot. Overall, I'd probably come here again just for the rice rolls, or to try another flavor congee. Worth a try! If you go, it's CASH ONLY.
Steam Box Rice Roll has been on my radar for quite some time now, but I've always been hesitant to go in since I've read that the wait can take up to 40 mins. Thankfully, when my sister and I passed by yesterday, the place was empty, so after grabbing drinks next door, we finally tried Steam Box. The establishment itself is on the smaller side, sparsely decorated, but immaculate, with two small tables against both the left and right walls. Larger parties of 3 or 4 will have difficulty finding seating, but the tables are perfect for smaller parties of 1 to 2. Upon entering, we greeted the staff and asked if we could dine in. After getting the okay, we ordered at the counter. I ordered the Curry Fish Ball Steam Rice Roll with Green Onions for myself, while my sister ordered the Beef Steam Rice Roll with Cilantro. We could've finished there, but my sister, being the chatty person she is, asked the staff what else was popular. At that point, the heat was getting to me, and I felt like bashing a certain someone, but I reined myself in. The staff, on the other hand, was super nice and answered that the Pork and Beef Steam Rice Rolls were the most popular rolls. She also highly recommended the Char Siu Steam Rice Roll and Shrimp w/ Salted Egg Yolk Steam Rice Roll, so we got one of the Char Siu Steam Rice Rolls with Cilantro too. I also asked my sister repeatedly if she wanted an egg (because I wanted it!), but the little dummy didn't get the hint and said no... Anyhow, the service was fast and our order came out in a matter of minutes. The rice rolls were soft, chewy, and incredibly tender, almost like silk; and, while the rice rolls themselves were relatively mild in flavor, they paired perfectly with the delicious fillings and condiments. The Char Siu surprisingly ended up being my favorite rice roll, as it was the perfect combination of sweet, savory, and umami taste profiles, but the Beef came in close second. The Curry Fish Ball was slightly bland and on the lighter side, but otherwise still okay. I look forward to coming back and trying some of their other rice rolls, next time with corn and egg!
Really good fresh "Churn-Fun"! Tucked away in a cozy spot right next door to Vivi Bubble tea... would've have missed it completely had it not been my tea craving. Noticed a bunch of peeps waiting... decided to get a few to try. Made to order. A good selection and can add other ingredients ($). Service is kind of slow bc of the steaming process, so patience with a side of 15-20 mins is my recommendation. OR call & order ahead like we did on our next trip. They offer delivery through Grubhub... prices are inflated by at least $1 or $2... to cover the insane fees. My go-to's: beef w/ pickled veggies (shredded) + bean sprouts for crunch. Bacon & corn + cilantro. Pork & shallot + bean sprouts. My kids love the egg version. Overall a good spot for a quick brunch! When you missed breakfast and it's too early for lunch. #yelplife #enjoyfood #brooklynyelp
Came here with hubby after getting my Covid test nearby for brunch. Ordered: *Curry fishball rice rolls *Hometown rice rolls *Steambox steamed noodles with beef *Char siu rice rolls *Meat lovers rice rolls (3 meats: chicken, pork, beef) *Beef rice rolls (+ egg & lettuce) *Dumplings (8pcs) *Curry fishballs (10pcs) All rice rolls & noodles were ordered with the free toppings: scallions, cilantro and bean sprouts. The steambox steam noodles seem to be instant noodles with shrimp and veggies. It wasn't anything special. Because we order it with beef (additional $1), it had some chunks of beef pieces. The hometown ricerolls had black sesame seeds and unknown ingredients. Because we asked for all to have the freebie ingredients, it was heavy on bean sprouts and we couldn't taste the original taste. Next time, we'll order without the freebie toppings to see how it originally taste like. Curry fishballs was okay with mild flavor as the curry sauce was more like water (watered down sauce). Char siu was okay too. I still enjoy my beef ricerolls with the added lettuce & egg for that extra crunch. The meatlovers was pretty good.

Made a pick up order. Ready in 8 minutes. The woman at the counter was very friendly. The space is small and clean. The rice rolls were soft and silky. Cooked to perfect. No sight of firmness what so ever. Everything came out ready to eat. The protein was enough for every bite. I would definitely come back read more

Rice noodles have been my comfort food of choice since I was a wee lassie, and little has changed over the years about my love for the dish. While I used to have to travel great distances to find them, the last couple of years have seen an explosion of places to get rice noodles around the city, with the popularity of Joe's Steam Rice Roll helping fuel the city's appetite for this inexpensive and deeply satisfying dish. Around Bensonhurst's Chinatown, there's no shortage of places to get them, but Steam Box Rice Roll's menu of over 16 variations on the dish makes it hard to pass up a visit. You can get anything from a pork steam rice roll to a bacon corn steam rice roll-- my friends and I went with a curious sounding one with Italian sausage and one with shrimp and salted egg yolk. I don't consume swine, but I'm told the Italian sausage one tasted nothing like what it was named for, and the bits of protein were too small to really be able to tell. The shrimp one was a winner, full of large pieces of protein and plenty of flavor. The noodles in both dishes were incredibly fresh, and each heaping portion will only set you back about 4 bucks. They only accept cash, and dishes can take a while to prepare since each item is made to order. read more
I was walking around the neighborhood and saw that this was newly opened so I came to support this mom & pop shop. This shop mostly sells freshly made steamed rice rolls. There were many different kinds of steamed rice rolls & some that I have never seen (bacon & corn, salted egg yolk) or tried before. Staff was very friendly and nice & told me that there are many delicious ones to try. Since I was not that hungry, I ordered the shrimp with salted egg because it was unique. Staff told me that the shrimps they use are all fresh and not frozen. They give u small container of soy sauce & housemade chilli with oil as condiments to pour over the rice rolls. The shrimp with salted egg yolk steamed rice rolls was amazing! It surpassed my expectation. It was very tender and soft, thicker which I preferred (dislike the super thin rice rolls), super fresh and very delicious! The shrimp with salted egg went so well together & when u poured the soy sauce & chili on it, the taste was even more amazing. Super delicious and a great addition to the neighborhood! I will come back to try their other steamed rice roll soon. read more
Truly the best rice noodle rolls CHEUNG FUN in Bensonhurst, and I say it as a born-raised in Guangzhou Cantonese. There are different styles/types of rice noodle rolls, Cantonese style is silky thin but still a bit chewy. This place is not close by but I was willing to walk 80min total just to try. Definitely worth my trips, even though the price is on the higher side (the Joe one costs way more in Manhattan tho so...), I enjoy having good quality noodle rolls :D What to get: Any flavor besides the sesame/pickled vegetables. Remember to add the free add ons (bean sprouts, scallions, or cilantro). I also liked their more innovative ones like bacon & corn. Skip: Curry fish balls. It doesn't have curry flavors, just salty. The store: Small place, no dine in right now. You can call ahead to place order. Orders are ready pretty quickly (within 10-15mins). I've only ordered during the week so Idk how weekend would be. I'll definitely be returning whenever I can! read more
I found this spot randomly on Yelp and told my mom about it since she loves rice rolls. She recommended we try it but when she went to go pick some up, there was a 40-minute wait. So definitely place your order ahead of time. Since there were a few of us, we each got our own but split a roll from each so that we could all try a little bit of everything. We had the meat lover, bacon and corn, curry fish balls, beef, and egg. The meat lover and the bacon corn were probably the best ones. However, all of them could have used more filling. We also got an order of the curry fish balls and dumplings. The curry fish balls needed some more curry flavor. It tasted oddly like lemongrass, more than it did curry. The dumplings were meh. They were 8 for $5.50 but the quality was more along the lines of the 10 for $1 dumplings. With so many new rice roll places popping up, I'm not sure if I'd revisit Steam Box. read more
Finally a rice roll place opened up in the neighborhood. The restaurant itself is clean and only does takeout at the moment. The people working there are very nice as well I went with the meat lover rice roll. The texture of the rice roll was amazing along with the meat inside. I was a bit sad that they only gave soy sauce and not hoisin, peanut butter, or sriracha. I guess the next time I go back, I'll try asking for that The curry fish balls were okay. Nothing special Based on other reviews, I went to try the tea egg but it was okay and not that special either. I only had one egg with a lot of flavor and the other two eggs, the flavor didn't penetrate inside read more
Second favorite after Joe's Steamed Rice Rolls for sure - thin, slippery, good chew, and pretty generous with the filling for most rolls. You pretty much have to call ahead of time for pick up though. Went it once for a spontaneous order, but was told we'd had to wait 40 minutes for just one order of rice rolls. Whoaaaa This time, called in for 8 different rice noodles and the wait time was still 40 minutes, but at least it was planned. Small space in general but made even smaller due to covid - about two people can fit in socially distanced at once. Each steamed rice noodles without any add-ons are $4 to $4.50, with three long rolls. You will be satisfied from just one order - out of our 8 orders, 4 people altogether only managed to finish 4 plates! Favorites: - Beef: always a classic so this is just my favorite. Decent sized pieces of beef and marinated well - Bacon & corn: this was the most stuffed and flavorful (duhhh, bacon). Highly recommend this one for trying something that's different from the classic Chinese fillings Good: pork, roast pork, and chicken are next best, in this order. Can Skip: - Hometown: this is with black and white sesame seeds, salted turnip. Least favorite of the bunch. The sesame seeds make this an odd flavor and not worth trying - Chinese sausage and dried shrimp: another classic roll but nothing to rave about - Shrimp: I usually love shrimp rice rolls but this was the least packed rice roll. I think there were only 4-6 pieces of small shrimp, which in theory is generous enough, but due to the size...each bite that you take, you're eating more rice rolls than meat. Imbalance in each mouthful, so didn't enjoy as much Curry Fish Balls: not bouncy (actually a little hard in the middle), curry isn't too strong - can also skip read more

Stopped by for a quick lunch and ordered the beef with cilantro, green onions, and egg and a shrimp rice noodle. Both came out piping hot and in good portions! The texture was spot on for the rice noodles and the sauce wasn't watered down as some of the manhattan restaurants are. The beef was, as it always is, small and ground but it didn't take away from any of the rice noodle texture. Adding the egg unto my rice noodles was pretty impressive as it was thin and still allowed for enough give on the roll that I could cut it with the side of my plastic fork. Overall just 4 stars because I have to go back and try a few more things but otherwise I did enjoy my experience and my food! I will be back! read more
Always on the lookout for cheap and delicious eats! I came across this place on Yelp and decided to try it. I came in the morning and they were relatively busy. The rice rolls are made fresh so it does take some time. The workers are really friendly. The curry fish ball rice roll was really good. I wasn't a fan of the kimchi rice roll. The fish congee was tasty. Overall the food was good, but nothing really special. I think the price is good for the portion read more

The rice roll are freshly made. I waited around 5 minutes for the dried shrimp rice roll to cook. The service was bad. I walked in and there was nobody inside to serve. The kitchen staff saw me but did nothing. There was a guy outside talking on the phone, it turned out to he was server. He came back into the store after 5 minutes and took my order. read more

There are many steam rice rolls on the rise lately, but this is a good hidden gem in the Brooklyn are. I personally found good ones in flushing and Manhattan, but this definitely worth while for anyone around the Brooklyn area. I got the meat lover and shrimp with salt egg yolk and I like how fresh it was, how fast the service was as well and the silky smooth noodles made with it! Really well flavored and not too salty so you can add extra soy sauce or sirarcha. The congee is ok - wouldn't really get it again because the content to congee ratio was unproportional. Overall, very affordable and delicious rice rolls! Would come back again! read more

I was very lucky to take lunch at this place three times while I was away for 4 days. Very tasty food, service, price , and again, very delicious. The most important thing is that the food is steamed and not greasy, which is definitely suitable for my diet . Definitely recommend this place read more

This cozy spot serves the best steam rice rolls in Brooklyn. I have been a regular since they opened in 2020 and their menu expanded... from a large selection of rice rolls to fish balls to tea eggs. The prices are on par with Chinatown rice roll spots, but it is fresh and they give generous portions and fillings so that justifies! The staff are friendly and efficient. I would recommend ordering over the phone 15 minutes in advance so you can be in and out. read more
New steamed rice noodle shop in the area. Shop is really small, best bet is to call in the order beforehand for pick-up. Got the Pork steam rice noodle with eggs and cilantro, tasted really good. The texture of the rice noodles were thin with the right consistency of bounce that I really enjoy. Soy sauce does play a part in adding to the deliciousness of this dish. Price is $4.5 each it's a little steeper than the average rice noodles you get on 8th Avenue. Overall, liked this little shop read more
