The first thing I noticed was the wait to be seated. We waited about 20 minutes, and once we got to the dining area, there were several empty tables. Once we're seated and ordered, the food came out timely and was delicious. I had a cheeseburger and the cherry cobbler with ice cream. Day 2: Breakfast. Since the food was good, we decided to go back for breakfast again the next day. Again, there was a wait to be seated. We were a group of 5 so we expected there might be a wait. The waitress was friendly and our orders were placed quickly. it did take a while for the food to come out from the kitchen. I had a country breakfast plate with ham. Again the food was delicious. Day 3: Supper. We had a relatively short wait to be seated this time. We were seated and asked for some water. It took over 20 minutes to get the water. Finally a different waitress came out and took our order. I ordered the hungry hiker challenge. It is a cheeseburger with three 8-ounce burger patties on it. The menu says if you finish you get some free cobbler. While we were waiting for our food we noticed that a local who came in and sat down after we were seated had already been served and was done eating before our food arrived. I finished the burger, and some of the other patron's noticed and congratulated me. When the waitress arrived she asked if we needed anything else. I asked if the free cobbler came with ice cream on it. She said no, so I ordered ice cream to go with my cobbler. It was a peach that day. Again, the food was delicious. The main thing that I notice about the restaurant was that despite having great food, service was pretty slow. One of the hikers I ate with noticed that the waitresses seemed to have to seat the customers, take the orders, deliver the food, clean the tables, and handle the check-out at the end of the meals. It seems like the service would have been much quicker if they had someone handling the seating, check-out's, and possibly bussing and cleaning tables. The worst part of the experience was the long waits to be seated and for the food to come out. The food itself was great and I found the servers and other customers to be friendly. The furnishings were clean with a 1960's diner feel. Overall, I would hesitate to go back if I were in a hurry of any kind. If time is no object, the food is great.

My Ball jar of sweet tea was never any less than half full, and that sweet tea was *chef's kiss*. We both decided on the meatloaf, and I opted for cornbread, green beans and pickled beets. I felt like I had been transported back in time and was being fed by my great great grandmother. Sounds a bit dramatic, I know. But I haven't had cornbread, meatloaf or beets like this in so many years. It did not taste like restaurant food, it tasted like home cooking. We're already planning our next little "run away from life and parenthood" to Hot Springs, and Smoky Mountain Diner is top of the "will definitely visit again" list. I don't like posting negative reviews, but I thought I would do so as a word of caution to others…read more We went to the Watch for the first time last night on a beautiful summer Saturday evening. Normally, restaurants in downtown Asheville are mobbed this time of year. Last evening, the Watch was practically empty. Here's why: Nearly every part of our meal was sub-standard. We first ordered a charcuterie board for the table. After about 25 minutes, I asked the server about it, and he candidly acknowledged that he had forgotten to order it. I cancelled it given that our main courses were soon to arrive. Unfortunately, our experience with the main courses was no better. First, the market price ($33), trout, which my guest had been assured would be sautéed rather than deep fried and accompanied by mashed potatoes, arrived deep fried and without mashed potatoes. It also had apparently been frozen - - a perplexing occurrence since trout is generally caught fresh locally and was a "market price"entree. Also, the missing mashed potatoes were replaced by fried square oily potato chunks that bore zero resemblance to the mashed potatoes we were told would come with the trout. Next, my friend who ordered a Smashburger medium received a burger cooked very well done that she said did not taste good; she wound up eating the accompanying french fries as her main meal. Finally, my grilled salmon was average at best, and I believe that my friend felt the same way about her blackened salmon. The dinner was so obviously disappointing that the server kindly provided a complementary glass of wine and, on his own, discounted the bill. To his credit, he was consistently nice during this debacle of a dinner. Given its ideal location, The Watch should be a gold mine. Instead, it is more like a beautiful broken clock, although given it how empty it was, I'm not even sure that it's right twice a day. I hope that the owners take a hard look inside the Watch and figure out what needs repair. The space is beautiful, and the location is ideal; it would be a wonderful addition to the Asheville dining scene if the owners could get the Watch ticking.

The house mix had an odd flavor that nobody at the table could quite identify, and it seriously lacked spice. It was just kinda bland. I noticed a bottle of Firewalker hot sauce on the table, and splashing that in helped a little bit. After that, I transitioned to a mimosa. You really cannot mess up a mimosa too much, and it was a solid, reliable second drink. For the main event, I ordered the southern chicken and waffles. This came with a fried chicken breast sitting on golden malted waffles, smothered in sausage gravy, and drizzled with chipotle honey. It was a really great dish. The kitchen did a solid job with the fry on the chicken, and the gravy had a nice flavor. It leaned a little on the sweet side because of the honey, but it was not totally overdone. The real sleeper hit of the morning, though, was the side of cheesy grits. Those grits were absolute heaven. They were incredibly creamy and perfectly seasoned. If you go, you have to order them. Chestnut is in a great location, and despite the weak Bloody Mary, it was a stellar visit.
