While in Indy for the NASCAR race, I looked around to see what is one of the most iconic places to visit - and this place was it! And only a half block walk from the Omni Hotel we were staying in! Food (5/5): Well, this place would not have lasted since 1902 if the food wasn't delicious. And it did not disappoint. We have been eating so much lately that we ordered an appetizer and main and the kitchen split everything in half. Bread: Delicious fresh made rolls of onion and pumpernickel. The best thing was the cheese lavosh crackers, which were hiding in the bottom - we almost missed them! They said they purchase the lavosh, then put garlic butter and cheese on them and bake them. Just wonderful! Shrimp cocktail - Of course we had to try this! The large shrimps were hiding under a mound of freshly grated horseradish and tomato paste to make a spicy, eye watering cocktail sauce. Iconic indeed! The main came with "bean soup" which sounded not great, but it was surprisingly good. It had chunks of ham and carrots and tasted more like split pea soup. The main also came with a side - we opted for the loaded baked potato and it was perfectly cooked. Nothing like a great baked potato with sour cream, cheese, and bacon! Filet mignon - We got the 8oz (medium rare) and the kitchen split it in half for us. I also got it Oscar Style, which included lump crab, asparagus, and béarnaise sauce (lovely butter sauce!) Service (5/5): David was an amazing server. Tux laden and professional to the core. The other servers did not let an empty plate sit on the table for more than a few seconds after we finished. My husband and I decided to go on an impromptu dinner date, and we ended up at St. Elmo Steak House. We were able to make reservations right away, which was a great start! I'd been craving a chopped steak ever since H & I stopped serving them, so I was excited to finally satisfy that craving. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted, and after only about a five-minute wait, we were seated. I really appreciated how organized and attentive the staff was. On the way to our table, the hostess even pointed out where the restrooms were, and that was just a small detail that made us feel well taken care of. Our original table was a little too cold, but our server immediately noticed and kindly offered us other seating options. She was fantastic throughout the entire evening. The ambiance was warm and slightly romantic, with dim lighting that made for a perfect date night. We started with cocktails, fresh bread, and the famous shrimp cocktail. The horseradish sauce definitely packed some heat, but it was absolutely delicious! For dinner, I ordered the chopped steak with the lobster bisque, while my husband chose the flat iron steak with the bean soup. Every bite was flavorful and perfectly prepared. We both agreed the food was outstanding. I actually filled up on the appetizers, so I wasn't able to finish my chopped steak, but our server graciously boxed it up for me to enjoy later. A lot of time slots were booked for this place, and I can see why. It's a historical place, the oldest restaurant in Indianapolis that has been well-kept and looks marvelous inside. We got there 30min early before our reservation time, and to our delight were seated within minutes. We walked past the bar, kitchen window, through some halls, and down to the bottom level. It was a busy Thursday night! We had a wonderful server who was pleasant and attentive. I tried their refreshing lemony cocktail to start and Pinot noir thst paired well with the best ribeye steak which was tender, juicy, and perfectly charred, mashed potatoes, and creamed spinach. They also gave us a basket of warm bread and crackers that were addictive. For dessert, we had the bread pudding and butter cake--both so, so delicious! Such a memorable dinner! I was in town briefly last month and learned that this popular historic steakhouse would be open for lunch. Normally, they operate only during dinner time, however whenever Indianapolis is hosting a major event, St. Elmo Steak House extends their business hours to take advantage of the influx of visitors like me. There are plenty of restaurants in downtown, but not many are designated as a National Register of Historic Place like this spot which opened in 1902. I made a reservation on OpenTable to guarantee a seat during the mid-afternoon. There was no line that extended outside to the sidewalk, but when you entered the premises, the bar area was completely packed with sports fans. I walked to the main hostess stand to let the staff know that I was present. Within a few moments, I was instructed to proceed to a flashing blue light near the back of the room where a secondary hostess stand existed. There must have been at least three separate dining areas, and I was escorted to a two-top table in the one farthest from the bar. The ambiance was certainly old school with dim lighting, dark colored wood, and white tablecloths at each setting. A basket of complimentary bread of various types and herbed butter were provided while I looked at the menu. I'm accustomed to multi-page offerings at upscale steakhouses, but here the choices were condensed to one page across the categories of Starter, Salads, Sides, Chops & Chicken, Seafood, and Steaks. The only starter listed was their world-famous Shrimp Cocktail so I chose that item to begin my meal. There were four jumbo shrimp served with a signature cocktail sauce. I should have read the reviews before visiting because the sauce was extremely spicy. I have never tasted that much horseradish in a cocktail sauce. Kudos to anyone who can finish all of the sauce with the shrimp as the taste was harsh to my sinuses. I wasn't impressed by the presentation as the shrimp were covered by the sauce inside a metal vessel that could have doubled as an ice cream dish. For an entree, I selected the 8 oz Filet Mignon cooked medium rare as my preference. The tender, center-cut was grilled perfectly and served with navy bean soup (my pick) or tomato juice and a choice of baked potato, fresh-cut fries, redskin mashed potatoes (my pick), or sautéed French green beans. The soup was hearty and not too salty while the mashed potatoes were ordinary. I honestly enjoyed the soup and bread more so than the steak and shrimp cocktail. While the service was great, what kept me from rating my dining experience at St. Elmo Steak House higher was the disappointment with the shrimp cocktail. At a price of $21.95, it was overly pricey even for the standards in my West Coast hometown. I believe they used to offer five shrimp in a serving, but that was reduced by one which made the value even less appealing. read more

They sell they shrimp cocktail reputation hard, but the best prime rib we've ever had is at St Elmo's in Indianapolis (sorry Texas, Arizona, New York, Australia, Ireland -- it's true). Not sure just how the raspberry sorbet is better than all the sorbet in Italy, but there's that, too. Also, try the bourbon butter cake. Despite how massive this place is, it's easy to see why tables are still hard to come by. Maybe it's how experienced the staff is? Some have been there 20, 30, 40 years. I have heard about St. Elmo Steakhouse for years all the way in Texas so I figured I better give it a try. Each year during the NFL draft you hear all about the shrimp cocktail and I was excited to give one a go. When I arrived I was seated straight away and from the start to the end of my meal, the service I received from Daniel was absolutely fantastic. He is an incredible professional. The restaurant itself is beautiful and full of old school charm. I started with the Shrimp and kick you say? You are darn right there is a kick! The flavor is great but that burn doesn't play. I followed that up with the 8oz filet and Mashed Potatoes paired with the Brussels Sprouts. The steak was tender and cooked to the exact desired temp but I felt it could have used more seasoning. The potatoes were super tasty as were the Sprouts. Overall it is hard to beat a classic steakhouse with amazing service. I visited here back in 2021 and had a wonderful experience. Today, I stopped in while in Indy and had the shrimp cocktail, the BLT chopped salad and a beer. The shrimp cocktail was fresh, delicious and spicy as always. I forgot how good it was but it definitely made my eyes tear...in a good way! The BLT salad had to be one of my favorite salads ever. The bacon chunks were huge and super flavorful! The service I received at the bar from all of the staff was excellent. It's a must go when your in downtown Indianapolis. It's the oldest steak house in the city. We went for Sunday dinner, they have happy hour on Sundays if you want to get the famous St. Elmo's cola; which we did and it's great with regular coke or Diet Coke. The service is top notch and the dinning space is warm and comfortable, we were seated by the front window so we could watch the city. The famous shrimp cocktail, gotta get it. We had ribeyes they were wonderful. My opinion is the food, service, and history are worth the price. Shrimp Cocktail was the best I have ever had, particularly the cocktail sauce; but beware of the kick. Steaks were cooked and seasoned perfectly. I split a charred medium-rare dry aged ribeye and another guest had the flat iron. Mushrooms and creamed spinach were steakhouse examples and delicious. A few issues dinged them a star: Food temperature needs to be hotter on the soup and sides. I'm not a fan of the 1/2 carafe of room temp water left on the table rather than our waiter refilling glasses. Steak knives were not sharp. Light cardstock paper menu with no cover. Using a Toast handheld POS to take orders at the table. One last thing, the restaurant does not have a dress code and I understand that this may be necessary in today's casual environment. However, several patrons dining at the restaurant were in t-shirts, sweats, and baseball caps. I must be from a different era as I find this disrespectful to this classic establishment. read more

Chopped salad and mushrooms Wonderful. Then dessert and coffee. Oh my gosh the chocolate mousse with Oreo crust was to die for. Our waiter wanted to know if we were pleased "of course". We started with the famous cocktail shrimp which was amazing. The only reason I would not order it is if I had a shellfish allergy. The sauce makes the whole dish! Word of advice, you can always add more but you can't take away. :) For the entrees, we ordered the filet mignon and rib eye, both with navy bean soup and mashed potatoes. Amazing!!! For the sides, we got the lobster Mac n cheese and the brussel sprouts. I would order it all again, except for the lobster Mac. The noodle was over cooked in our opinion so it was more mushy and soft than we like. The cheese flavor is great. St. Elmo Steak House truly is the Granddaddy of them all when it comes to restaurants in Indiana. This is the spot you hear about on TV, from friends, and on the Internet. Most everyone was in Colts attire, but I know most other nights people like to dress up and be fancy here. There are a ton of different rooms, and at least another floor high. I like all of the old memorabilia and photos on the walls. You'll see lots of famous athletes, politicians, famous Indiana people, movie stars, etc. Up first, I had the $13 brussels sprouts!!!! Easily the best ones I've ever had in Indy. I loved all of the toppings and extra flavors going on. My only wish is that they were more charred. However, everything else was perfect. A super star score 9.3/10. I had a $16 espresso martini. It was just ok. Probably wouldn't get one again. For the main course I had the $74 12 oz filet mignon. As you would expect it was made to perfection. Absolutely loved it. As a side I ordered the $12 Mushrooms. They tasted exactly like Sullivan's Mushrooms. Also, liked these. Mom had the famous $21.95 St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail. If you need your nose cleared up this is the dish for you. The cocktail sauce definitely delivers plenty of heat. I like the atmosphere. First off, as everyone says the shrimp cocktail is legendary. It's one of those things that is a bit of a right of passage when visiting Saint Elmo. There were many large tables booked on the evening we visited, and the restaurant was absolutely packed upstairs and down when we visited. I know this for certain because I knew many of the people throughout the restaurant all with their respective groups. The service is impeccable. The food, when ordered, arrives at the table relatively rapidly. The kitchen must, as a necessity, be well managed in order to serve this volume of people in such a rapid fashion and with such high quality. All of it appeared to be prepared with a high level of skill and not only did it taste wonderful, but the visual presentation was top notch. Saint Elmo is one of the nationally known steakhouses among beef aficionados. It is a destination restaurant for many, and a fine reason as any to visit Indianappolis. We were staying at the Le Meridian next door so I made a reservation for the steakhouse due to it's high ratings. It did not disappoint. It's a large busy restaurant, with a huge wait staff. We are not shrimp eaters so we passed on the famous shrimp cocktail but heard everyone raving about it. The meal started with a really nice bean soup. Then we ordered filet and chopped steak. Both were really well done. The chopped steak came with a toast with a mushroom puree on it. I am not that fond of mushrooms but that was good. The mixed drinks were delicious. Given its history and reputation, I knew getting a seat would be a long shot, but I lucked out with a perfect corner bar seat right in front of one of the few TVs, so I got to watch MNF while I ate. The famous blow your face off spicy shrimp cocktail absolutely earns the reputation. I felt like I WAS the horseradish. If you maybe only kind of like it spicy, you have to order it. Don't be a baby. The lemon helps. For my main, I went with the ribeye, medium rare, and it was excellent -- simple prep and nicely cooked. It came with one of two soups (I got the bean soup which I would recommend for you) and although I really wanted the baked potato I got the green beans, which were also very tasty. I really appreciate when a steak actually comes with sides instead of having to order family style sides. I started with an old fashioned, moved to red wine with the steak, and finished with a port...and think that's a good way to order and space out the drinks. If you want to go, definitely make a reservation or be ready to wait at the bar. I got lucky. We chose St. Elmo's to celebrate Christmas Eve this year since we had someone from out of town visiting and it was the perfect location! Started off with the house made onion rings, shrimp cocktail of course & my personal favorite... wedge salad, that wedge salad alone would make me come back over and over. I get mine without blue cheese and do Caesar dressing instead. It's so delicious. I love the bacon pieces! Every entree comes with navy bean soup or tomato juice, while I do love the navy bean soup the tomato juice was so fresh and tasty with the lemon squeeze! For dinner we had crab stuffed shrimp, it was good but the linguine in the center was lacking flavor, my husbands lamb dish was delicious and I love to eat their mashed potatoes and add horseradish! Next time I would definitely get the steak as I have in the past or I'd try out the lamb. The real star of the show..I mean in addition to the wedge salad and tomato juice was our server Kyle Z!! He was so great and made our dining experience even better. Professional while being personable. We would definitely request him next time, he was so knowledgeable about the restaurant and offered recommendations. If I could give this place 10 stars, I absolutely would. From the moment we walked in until the moment we left, everything was exceptional. The service, the food, the atmosphere... every bit of it was a 10/10. Our server, a Marine veteran, was hands down one of the best servers we've ever had. His attention to detail was incredible, and somehow he made our group feel like we were his only table, even though he was clearly taking care of several others. That level of hospitality is rare. This Indianapolis classic steakhouse has been around for a very long time and I believe it achieved legendary status. I've heard of this place referenced over the years by lots of athletes and sport commentators (mostly football) who have mentioned they come to the place when they're in town. I've also heard of their famous shrimp cocktail. As a matter of fact, I listen to an LA based food podcast where the host mentioned he's creating a sandwich, for a food event in 2025, that's an homage to the shrimp cocktail here. Being the food tourist that I am, I made a reservation late on a Friday night for after an Indiana Fever game (this place is a five minute walk from the Gainbridge Fieldhouse) specifically to get the shrimp cocktail and the Elmo Cola. I thought about getting a steak, but I tend to get heart burn when I eat too much meat late at night and I had a whole weekend of eating my way through Indy. The vibe here is definitely classy, but not overly stuffy as to feel intimidated if you're not necessarily dressed up for a night on the town. I checked in a little early for my reservation and was able to get seated in a busy room with tables right away. I let me server know what I was there for and he was so kind and accommodating. I forget his name sadly (it was on 9/5/25), but I ordered my shrimp cocktail and Elmo Cola and told him I will be out shortly and not taking up the table for too long. He told me to relax, haha and actually gave me more recs for other places around town. The shrimp cocktail was no joke. I have a pretty high (non-oil based) tolerance for heat and the sauce here, packed with horseradish, clears the sinuses with each bite. The cocktail comes with at least four large prawns (I think) that is covered in their famous cocktail sauce. Such a fun and delicious bite. The Elmo Cola is basically made of Maker's Mark(?) bourbon that was infused with cherries and vanilla. This concoction is then poured into a class with ice and served with Coca-Cola. You can pour the Cola in yourself to your liking. Another fun food item! I really enjoyed my experience (albeit brief) at this fantastic classic old school steakhouse with fantastic service. Guys, I wanted to love it, but I've had better; and before you come at me for the 3 star, I would have given it a 4 star, but within the hour visit, 4 different glasses were broke and it just wasn't a luxurious & relaxing experience that should come with that price tag. We also were caught off guard by a conversation at neighboring table that almost seemed confrontational between a staff member and a table of 2 couples. It was very close to us, but we couldn't understand what was going on due to it being loud in restaurant. Story time: We have been in the city for 3 years and it's been on our to do list to make it to St Elmo's, so for my husband's 30th birthday, we decided to make it happen. I reserved weeks in advance for a Saturday night 5:30pm spot. Upon arrival, we almost immediately got our seat although it was probably at about 90% capacity which is wonderful. I do wish I would have known about the valet prior as I would have opted for it. It was cheaper than the parking garage around the corner and would have been a nice perk for the occasion. The website doesn't guarantee the availability or price of valet. But over all, getting in was easy. After being seated, we met our waiter which was nice, but busy. Not too much explanation of options, but the menu is straight forward. My husband tried out the Elmo Cola which was pretty good, and of course, we had to try the cocktail shrimp just because. It was pretty good, but the horseradish will hit you on the back side. We scraped a lot of the sauce off. Then, our bean soup came out, which was one of my favorite parts. Salty, but full of flavor and delicious! I then ordered the filet mignon which had to be the best steak I've had in a while. The green beans were good, nothing special. My big thing is the sides. I almost didn't order an entree so I could have extra sides. I'm glad I did order the steak, because I was super disappointed with the king crab mac & cheese. Texture was ok and cheesiness was good, but the crab just didn't taste good to be in the Mac & cheese. And I've had really good seafood mac & cheese before. (I dream of the place I had in Sanibel Island 4 years ago.) My husband ordered the aged prime New York strip which he also thought was good but preferred my not aged steak after a few bites. The flavor is almost what I would describe as smokey?? The potato on the side was good as well. He also got the African lobster tail(not pictured). Again, we didn't really like it at all. Guys, I've had lobster from here to the east coast and never not loved it. It's never been African or grilled. Maybe that was my problem?? It appeared beautiful grilled(not burnt or tough),but almost tasted burnt to me? Disappointed. The hubs enjoyed the asparagus. Dessert though... 5 stars for the double chocolate mousse pie! Over all, the presentation was beautiful and the food was cooked well, but sadly, I just don't think it's one of my favorite places. Bowdies and Tony's would be preferred local places of ours. If I went back again, I'd jump at the Filet Mignon again, but try different sides. Maybe a salad, maybe a different hot side. I thought it was just me, but we had a big surprise party after and some of our friends reported similar opinions of the food. OK. So I read some of the reviews and I'm relieved to see many others are underwhelmed with the food but very pleased with the service. Ordered the famous shrimp - it is just shrimp with pre-mixed cocktail sauce and more horse radish than a person would normally use. Not the biggest shrimp I've, tasty fresh and clean but nothing noteworthy. The porterhouse was over cooked and visually dry, I don't think it was any noteworthy farm. Very so-so. French were good, onion rings pretty great and baked potato was honestly just a potato. Our server was great and friendly. Our steak came out with no sides, so I had to request to be investigated. After they came out immediately and hot and fresh. I believe they came by apologized and comped one; so kudos on the service level. Nice they comped but honestly it was nice they came to apologize and immediately got us sides. I think its local, great vibe. Food was ok, but service and experience very nice. I think with steak it depends who is on the grill..there is variance. Overall, I might return and give another chance b/c everything else tasted great and the service was friendly and great. read more

Kyle brings old Hollywood charm, while warm wood-framed booths, soft golden lighting, and Sinatra overhead are nostalgic and hopeful. He's exceptionally knowledgeable about the culture and the menu, a trusted guide (more like a newfound friend), enhancing the atmosphere without intruding on our experience. Came for the shrimp cocktail - they grind the horseradish in house so it packs a punch, can't say the shrimp is fresh in taste or texture but the pungent cocktail sauce is great so I guess it doesn't matter... Pass on it if you lean towards gastritis, it will tear up your stomach. Steak was pricey dry and overcooked despite our request for medium, sides average- beans rubbery and tasteless, mushrooms meh,onion rings bland, service really subpar for a higher end priced restaurant. Our waitress seemed annoyed with questions, humorless and rushed. Younger manager might have been in training, but came off Gen Z attitude with a side of "I'm too good for this job." Seating hostess was rude as well rolling her eyes and speaking flippantly. These employees could really benefit from learning how to communicate in a mature and professional way. It's a service industry, right?!? ‍ maybe they are all just really unhappy? Culture comes from the top down. All in all I would look further if you want a nice steak dinner. This environment at St Elmo's is neither intimate nor fun, it's busy with entitled energy and the staff certainly can't meet one's customer service expectations of paying higher prices to be welcomed to an upscale dinner with old school refined service.
