Visited Indy for a WNBA game and wanted to see what the fuss was about on the shrimp cocktail. st Elmo seemed more old school steakhouse than Harry and Izzy, which appeared larger and more commercial. Had the shrimp cocktail, and for me, it is very different than a typical shrimp cocktail. The biggie is that they use fresh horseradish to give you a super, clear your sinuses kick. I actually loved it and do agree it's a must try. I hate the Mac and cheese and sliders, and both were above average. Got the extra lobster add on for the Mac and cheese, and it was solid. Ended with their chocolate cake, which was like an entermanns devil food cake on steroids. Take that as a compliment, because I loved entermanns and this hit that spot. The hubby and I found ourselves in Indianapolis for a business trip, and when I told him where we were headed, his immediate response was, "We have to eat at St. Elmo's." So... reservations were made. Priorities, people. And let me tell you, St. Elmo's was HOPPING for a Wednesday night. We arrived early and managed to snag a spot at the bar, where we met Christy (I think that was her name -- apologies, Christy, if I butchered it!). Heavy-handed pours, great conversation, and hospitality that was every bit as warm as a Texan's. She's a doll! We were seated pretty quickly, although things got a little shaky from there. Our server was Brian, who ultimately turned out to be awesome, but we suspect he may have had approximately 47 tables. His appearances were limited, and we waited a fair bit for that initial greeting. But then... the food. The hubby ordered the infamous shrimp cocktail, which is apparently so spicy that he cried while simultaneously falling more deeply in love with it. Seriously, these were the biggest shrimp I've ever seen. He also ordered the lobster bisque. I was perfectly happy hanging out with the bread basket. And I'm almost positive there were these things in there that were basically cheese leather -- flattened cheese that somehow masqueraded as bread but was absolutely NOT bread. Whatever they were, they were the BEST thing in that basket. And they gave us, like, six of them. Six. I respect this generosity. The hubby ordered the crab-stuffed shrimp pasta and declared it "really good." Sorry, folks. That is the extent of my food journalism on that one. I ordered the chop steak. When asked how I wanted it cooked, I said medium. "Cold red center?" Um... definitely not. So I went with medium-well, which unfortunately resulted in what can only be described as a crispy chunk of meat generously slathered in Gorgonzola. For me, it was inedible and, honestly, pretty disappointing. Thankfully, we also ordered the Potatoes Romanoff. Friends. If potatoes and those mysterious cheesy leather-bread-things were the only things I'd eaten all night, I would have been completely satisfied. Those potatoes were THAT good. Brian started making more frequent appearances toward the end of the meal, and we ended up chatting about the city, getting some local pointers, and talking jazz -- which I know absolutely nothing about, but Brian? That man had a PASSION for it. And here's a fun St. Elmo's fact: apparently, people who work there... never leave. We couldn't visit Indianapolis without trying St. Elmo Steak House, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. From the historic, old-school steakhouse atmosphere to the service and perfectly cooked steaks, this was one of our favorite dinners of the trip. I highly recommend making reservations ahead of time. We had a reservation and were seated immediately when we arrived, which made the whole experience start off seamlessly. We obviously had to start with the famous St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail, and it was easily the best shrimp cocktail I've ever had. The shrimp were huge and the cocktail sauce is unlike any other I've tried. Fair warning: the horseradish is NO JOKE. Take a small bite first because it will absolutely clear your sinuses! That intense kick is part of what makes it so memorable. We upgraded to the lobster bisque (+$9) and were really happy we did. It was creamy and rich with actual chunks of lobster throughout. It paired perfectly with their complimentary bread--and, of course, we added plenty of butter. We loved the bread basket in general, especially the "everything" style bread, which was our favorite. For our entrées, we both ordered the 8 oz filet mignon. Mine came with the green beans and my partner chose the fries. Both steaks were cooked perfectly, with a beautifully charred exterior while remaining tender inside. The seasoning was excellent too. Filet can sometimes sacrifice flavor for tenderness, but these had both. We also had wine with dinner. I ordered the ROW 503 Pinot Noir, which was about a 3/5 for me. It was good, but probably not something I'd order again. My partner had the ALH Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon, which was easily a 5/5. The Cabernet was excellent and paired beautifully with the filet. Between the two, we would definitely go with the Cabernet next time. We finished with the bourbon butter cake, which was probably the weakest part of the meal for us at around a 3/5. It was still good, but I wish the cake itself had been served warmer and had a little more buttery richness. A huge shoutout to our server, Jennifer, who was amazing! She was attentive throughout the entire meal, gave us great recommendations and made us feel genuinely taken care of. Even though our conversations with her were brief, she was incredibly personable and added a lot to the experience. Overall, St. Elmo manages to feel like a piece of Indianapolis history without relying solely on its reputation. The shrimp cocktail alone is worth experiencing at least once, but the perfectly cooked filets and wonderful service are what would bring us back. Definitely a must-visit when you're in Indianapolis. The food was less than inspiring. The famous shrimp cocktail has beautiful large prawns drowned in cocktail sauce and horseradish. At the least it will wake your senses. The mains were uninspiring. We tried everything: dry aged ribeye, lamb chops, seared ahi tuna and a petit fillet. The ribeye at $98 was ok. Decent sear and it came the desired medium rare but it just did not have much magic. The lamb chops were a bit over done and not much crust. Our server was super friendly and they actually comped most of our meal due to some mix ups in the kitchen. So thank you for that! But I would not recommend to friends especially if you're not on an expense account. read more

My husband and I decided to go on an impromptu dinner date, and we ended up at St. Elmo Steak House. We were able to make reservations right away, which was a great start! I'd been craving a chopped steak ever since H & I stopped serving them, so I was excited to finally satisfy that craving. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted, and after only about a five-minute wait, we were seated. I really appreciated how organized and attentive the staff was. On the way to our table, the hostess even pointed out where the restrooms were, and that was just a small detail that made us feel well taken care of. Our original table was a little too cold, but our server immediately noticed and kindly offered us other seating options. She was fantastic throughout the entire evening. The ambiance was warm and slightly romantic, with dim lighting that made for a perfect date night. We started with cocktails, fresh bread, and the famous shrimp cocktail. The horseradish sauce definitely packed some heat, but it was absolutely delicious! For dinner, I ordered the chopped steak with the lobster bisque, while my husband chose the flat iron steak with the bean soup. Every bite was flavorful and perfectly prepared. A lot of time slots were booked for this place, and I can see why. It's a historical place, the oldest restaurant in Indianapolis that has been well-kept and looks marvelous inside. We got there 30min early before our reservation time, and to our delight were seated within minutes. We walked past the bar, kitchen window, through some halls, and down to the bottom level. It was a busy Thursday night! We had a wonderful server who was pleasant and attentive. I tried their refreshing lemony cocktail to start and Pinot noir thst paired well with the best ribeye steak which was tender, juicy, and perfectly charred, mashed potatoes, and creamed spinach. They also gave us a basket of warm bread and crackers that were addictive. For dessert, we had the bread pudding and butter cake--both so, so delicious! Such a memorable dinner! I was in town briefly last month and learned that this popular historic steakhouse would be open for lunch. Normally, they operate only during dinner time, however whenever Indianapolis is hosting a major event, St. Elmo Steak House extends their business hours to take advantage of the influx of visitors like me. There are plenty of restaurants in downtown, but not many are designated as a National Register of Historic Place like this spot which opened in 1902. I made a reservation on OpenTable to guarantee a seat during the mid-afternoon. There was no line that extended outside to the sidewalk, but when you entered the premises, the bar area was completely packed with sports fans. I walked to the main hostess stand to let the staff know that I was present. Within a few moments, I was instructed to proceed to a flashing blue light near the back of the room where a secondary hostess stand existed. There must have been at least three separate dining areas, and I was escorted to a two-top table in the one farthest from the bar. The ambiance was certainly old school with dim lighting, dark colored wood, and white tablecloths at each setting. A basket of complimentary bread of various types and herbed butter were provided while I looked at the menu. I'm accustomed to multi-page offerings at upscale steakhouses, but here the choices were condensed to one page across the categories of Starter, Salads, Sides, Chops & Chicken, Seafood, and Steaks. The only starter listed was their world-famous Shrimp Cocktail so I chose that item to begin my meal. There were four jumbo shrimp served with a signature cocktail sauce. I should have read the reviews before visiting because the sauce was extremely spicy. I have never tasted that much horseradish in a cocktail sauce. Kudos to anyone who can finish all of the sauce with the shrimp as the taste was harsh to my sinuses. I wasn't impressed by the presentation as the shrimp were covered by the sauce inside a metal vessel that could have doubled as an ice cream dish. For an entree, I selected the 8 oz Filet Mignon cooked medium rare as my preference. The tender, center-cut was grilled perfectly and served with navy bean soup (my pick) or tomato juice and a choice of baked potato, fresh-cut fries, redskin mashed potatoes (my pick), or sautéed French green beans. The soup was hearty and not too salty while the mashed potatoes were ordinary. I honestly enjoyed the soup and bread more so than the steak and shrimp cocktail. While the service was great, what kept me from rating my dining experience at St. Elmo Steak House higher was the disappointment with the shrimp cocktail. At a price of $21.95, it was overly pricey even for the standards in my West Coast hometown. I believe they used to offer five shrimp in a serving, but that was reduced by one which made the value even less appealing. read more

Each year during the NFL draft you hear all about the shrimp cocktail and I was excited to give one a go. When I arrived I was seated straight away and from the start to the end of my meal, the service I received from Daniel was absolutely fantastic. He is an incredible professional. The restaurant itself is beautiful and full of old school charm. I started with the Shrimp and kick you say? You are darn right there is a kick! The flavor is great but that burn doesn't play. I followed that up with the 8oz filet and Mashed Potatoes paired with the Brussels Sprouts. The steak was tender and cooked to the exact desired temp but I felt it could have used more seasoning. The potatoes were super tasty as were the Sprouts. Overall it is hard to beat a classic steakhouse with amazing service. We went for Sunday dinner, they have happy hour on Sundays if you want to get the famous St. Elmo's cola; which we did and it's great with regular coke or Diet Coke. I'm not a fan of the 1/2 carafe of room temp water left on the table rather than our waiter refilling glasses. Steak knives were not sharp. Light cardstock paper menu with no cover. Using a Toast handheld POS to take orders at the table. One last thing, the restaurant does not have a dress code and I understand that this may be necessary in today's casual environment. While in Indy for the NASCAR race, I looked around to see what is one of the most iconic places to visit - and this place was it! And only a half block walk from the Omni Hotel we were staying in! Food (5/5): Well, this place would not have lasted since 1902 if the food wasn't delicious. And it did not disappoint. We have been eating so much lately that we ordered an appetizer and main and the kitchen split everything in half. Bread: Delicious fresh made rolls of onion and pumpernickel. The best thing was the cheese lavosh crackers, which were hiding in the bottom - we almost missed them! They said they purchase the lavosh, then put garlic butter and cheese on them and bake them. Just wonderful! Shrimp cocktail - Of course we had to try this! The large shrimps were hiding under a mound of freshly grated horseradish and tomato paste to make a spicy, eye watering cocktail sauce. Iconic indeed! The main came with "bean soup" which sounded not great, but it was surprisingly good. It had chunks of ham and carrots and tasted more like split pea soup. The main also came with a side - we opted for the loaded baked potato and it was perfectly cooked. Nothing like a great baked potato with sour cream, cheese, and bacon! Filet mignon - We got the 8oz (medium rare) and the kitchen split it in half for us. I also got it Oscar Style, which included lump crab, asparagus, and béarnaise sauce (lovely butter sauce!) Service (5/5): David was an amazing server. Tux laden and professional to the core. The other servers did not let an empty plate sit on the table for more than a few seconds after we finished. With all the convention and sports business it is not easy to get seating It was a thrill. It is more than the steaks. It is the ambiance and servers. We were greeted by a valet. We were seated in a room that had walnut paneling, of course white table cloths. Although other groups were seated in the room it was not loud and seemed intimate. First the hot as heck, shrimp cocktail. We had our sauce on the side. Delicious and of course, their speciality We ordered the rib steak, Pittsburgh with a rare center. It was perfect. Chopped salad and mushrooms Wonderful. Then dessert and coffee. Oh my gosh the chocolate mousse with Oreo crust was to die for. Our waiter wanted to know if we were pleased "of course". Then he explained he would love to serve us again and the staff put his name in our reservation record The whole evening was perfect. Not one single complaint. The shrimp cocktail is good but, again, nothing to ride home about. Steaks, sides, etc., all seem to me to be genericized steakhouse fare. Most everyone was in Colts attire, but I know most other nights people like to dress up and be fancy here. There are a ton of different rooms, and at least another floor high. I like all of the old memorabilia and photos on the walls. You'll see lots of famous athletes, politicians, famous Indiana people, movie stars, etc. Up first, I had the $13 brussels sprouts!!!! Easily the best ones I've ever had in Indy. I loved all of the toppings and extra flavors going on. My only wish is that they were more charred. However, everything else was perfect. A super star score 9.3/10. I had a $16 espresso martini. It was just ok. Probably wouldn't get one again. For the main course I had the $74 12 oz filet mignon. As you would expect it was made to perfection. Absolutely loved it. As a side I ordered the $12 Mushrooms. They tasted exactly like Sullivan's Mushrooms. Also, liked these. Mom had the famous $21.95 St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail. If you need your nose cleared up this is the dish for you. The cocktail sauce definitely delivers plenty of heat. I like the atmosphere. I'm so disappointed. I love a historic establishment, with a beautiful oaken bar, a row of black tie bartenders and a bustling lively scene. But I've got to say, if you're going for the best meal, I wouldn't go to St. Elmo's. I'm in town for the week, I have all the usuals to choose from; Ruth's Chris, Del Frisco's, Oceanaire..... And I chose this one because it was local. Dang it. Bland, overly minced barely noticeable crab in my crab-stuffed shrimp, too-hot-to-eat shrimp cocktail, underwhelming bread selection. Oh well. I ordered: 1. 14 oz Ribeye, wet aged 25-30 days - redskin mashed potatoes, tomato juice +Oscar style - Alaskan king crab, asparagus, bearnaise sauce 2. St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail - 4 jumbo shrimp, spicy, signature cocktail sauce 14 oz (not prime) ribeye great for the value! Cooked medium rare as requested and flavor is decent. Tenderness/texture isn't legendary or award winning but maybe that's because it isn't a prime cut? Mashed potatoes was textbook and comforting. Tomato juice was refreshing and a good idea. I wouldn't recommend Oscar style - $30 for a small clump of crab, asparagus, and sauce isn't worth it. The jumbo shrimp was excellent, not rubbery. Cocktail sauce was a fun experience lol. No issues with service. Ambience is relaxing. read more

I'm in Indianapolis for business so I had to try this restaurant. I've seen all of the social media posts about their famous shrimp cocktail so this visit was happening. I secured my reservation and showed up on time. I was pleasantly greeted by the hostess with a smile. As I was escorted to my table I was shown where the restroom was in case I needed it. My server was also very friendly and showed me the regular menu and another menu for restaurant week. She explained everything. She asked if I ever dined there before and I told her no but I heard all about this shrimp cocktail. She laughed as I have her my order. You are brought bread and butter to start. I started with the famous shrimp cocktail and let me tell you, it's as advertised. I love spice, but be careful, this cocktail sauce is wicked with horseradish! It'll clear your sinus quickly! It was very delicious. The navy bean soup was also tasty. My entree was the ribeye cooked to perfection along with roasted asparagus which was seasoned perfectly. For a cocktail I had an old fashion. St Elmo is an experience. You have to have the Shrimp Cocktail and blah, blah, blah but quite honestly we have had better food. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive and made recommendations. The decor was "Hey, look who has been here" which is kind of cool but just a tad above the signed rubber buns at Tony Packo's. My ribeye steak prepared medium rare was mid at best and the mashed potatoes were just mashed potatoes. The vibe is this ...... You are lucky to be here. read more

First off, as everyone says the shrimp cocktail is legendary. It's one of those things that is a bit of a right of passage when visiting Saint Elmo. There were many large tables booked on the evening we visited, and the restaurant was absolutely packed upstairs and down when we visited. I know this for certain because I knew many of the people throughout the restaurant all with their respective groups. The service is impeccable. The food, when ordered, arrives at the table relatively rapidly. The kitchen must, as a necessity, be well managed in order to serve this volume of people in such a rapid fashion and with such high quality. All of it appeared to be prepared with a high level of skill and not only did it taste wonderful, but the visual presentation was top notch. Saint Elmo is one of the nationally known steakhouses among beef aficionados. It is a destination restaurant for many, and a fine reason as any to visit Indianappolis. I was in Indianapolis for work and needed a solid dinner spot for just me. Given its history and reputation, I knew getting a seat would be a long shot, but I lucked out with a perfect corner bar seat right in front of one of the few TVs, so I got to watch MNF while I ate. The famous blow your face off spicy shrimp cocktail absolutely earns the reputation. I felt like I WAS the horseradish. If you maybe only kind of like it spicy, you have to order it. Don't be a baby. The lemon helps. For my main, I went with the ribeye, medium rare, and it was excellent -- simple prep and nicely cooked. It came with one of two soups (I got the bean soup which I would recommend for you) and although I really wanted the baked potato I got the green beans, which were also very tasty. I really appreciate when a steak actually comes with sides instead of having to order family style sides. I started with an old fashioned, moved to red wine with the steak, and finished with a port...and think that's a good way to order and space out the drinks. If you want to go, definitely make a reservation or be ready to wait at the bar. I got lucky. While I wouldn't make a trip to Indy JUST to come here, I'd absolutely come back next time I'm in town. read more
