TLDR: gimmicky and wasn't our favorite experience. Would not recommend. We went to the Negroni Tasting experience and it was disappointing. For an Alinea Group establishment, the quality was subpar and honestly not worth the price of admission, sadly. The prime rib was super thin and anemic looking. Also, bc they warm up the cuts after they're cut, it wasn't a warm pink color when it was served (see photo). As someone who LOVES a good Wisconsin supper club (like Harvey House) this experience was a slap in the face. I expected a prime rib like San Francisco's House of Prime Rib but we paid twice as much to get half the quality at St Clair. As for the Negroni, I liked two of them but the other two just were way too bitter for my preference--but at least my Negroni-loving partner got his fill! Went to St Clair Supper Club before their scheduled closing at the end of the month. Overall, it met the traditional Wisconsin Supper Club experience. Great tasting prime rib, solid cocktails and a good overall vibe. The couple of concerns that I had with this place was their lacking in service. It felt as we were ignored during our visit as the waiter took longer than normal to attend to us. In addition, the room itself was very hot. Prime rib is the main attraction but there are non meat choices. Upgrades include Yorkshire pudding instead of rolls and Robuchon pommes puree instead of mashed potatoes. Food: We had several appetizers. The oysters Rockefeller were delicious - I'm often disappointed by this dish but theirs was really really good - so juicy and succulent. Fried cheese curds are never bad but these were particularly good and so was the house made hot sauce. Crab cakes were tasty. Deviled eggs ($15 each) were good but sticker shock prevented complete enjoyment. Entrees were also very good. Prime rib (from Australian wagyu) was predictably delicious. The cod fish & chips were excellent - as good as any I've had. Pan roasted salmon was perfect. Schnitzel was overcooked and missing the crispy puffy crust. Don't be fooled by the Alinea Group moniker- St Clair is a restaurant with potential that it doesn't live up to. We had the oysters, prime rib, horseradish sauce, mushrooms, carrots, and grasshopper pie. The food was good but with only one entree on the menu (Prime Rib) attached to the name of a celebrated chef it wasn't the "greatest" prime rib. The sides were mediocre. If you've been to true Midwestern Supper Clubs in northern Wisconsin you will be disappointed by the food and you'll be paying West Loop prices for that let down. The service was very good, staff friendly and attentive. Decor / Ambience is nice, though again, it seemed like they didn't "nail" the theme they were trying for. The open concept kitchen left all my clothes smelling like frying oil upon leaving. Location is very good in the heart of the West Loop, easy valet and garages are nearby. All and all, I wouldn't prioritize going back but would try it again if someone really wanted to- just avoiding "fish fry Fridays" for the sake of my dry cleaning bill. read more

Order each of the sauces for the prime rib, my fav was the bernaise sauce and the peppercorn sauce. Order the Yorkshire pudding to sop up the juices! The experience was what you would initially expect - a finer dining twist on a supper club. The concept and menu speak to that as well certainly when it comes to the price. The prime rib was very solid but not as unique or exceptional as you would hope. The fish fry was very well done. Of the many sides, we tried the Brussels sprouts, fries, and potato puree, and Yorkshire pudding. All were very standard but the Yorkshire pudding was the standout. Like TGI Fridays, or olive garden, but they don't charge the kind of money for their food that this place does. I spent $350.00 for myself and a friend. It pains me to not give this a higher rating bc the food and drinks were SPECTACULAR. One of the best prime ribs I've ever had, mostly bc the jus was so flavorful and more like a sauce than most other jus that are kind of thin and watery. We had shrimp cocktail and mushroom soup for apps (both super yummy), and then shared the English cut along with caramelized mushrooms (next level amazing) and the Robuchon potatoes (decadent and delicious if not a bit too salty). Also had Yorkshire puds but were so full that they were barely touched. Brandy old fashioneds were *chef's kiss* BUT. The ambience almost ruined the whole thing. First off, it's tiny and is in Roister's basement. So no windows or light. And you're kind of shoe-horned in there, so if you're remotely claustrophobic then forget about even trying this place. Next, it was soooo hot in there. I, and many other patrons, were fanning ourselves with our menus. And it wasn't even remotely hot outside. And worst off, the place REEKED of oil. Like an old fried chicken place. Because you're basically sitting in the kitchen, the odor just wafts over to you. My hair still smells like old frying oil. No signs of the issues many have reported on a Sunday night. Music could be a few dBA lower. Basement decor is cute. At least at the tables it isn't over-warm. This is a great hidden gem below Roister (all owned by the Alinea Group) and really captures the feel of driving through Wisconsin and pulling over to a bar-style supper club. The kitchen table seating is AWESOME and highly recommended for solo visitors or couples (more than that and you can't all talk to one another since you sit side-by-side). Be sure to avoid sitting in front of the stove area where it can get very hot. The food here was so home-cooking-delicious, that we'll easily come back when we save up more cash, haha... Our bill was over $400, so a place like Wildfire could serve up similar food for less, but then again, it wouldn't be the same incredible version for a few items (see my pics for winners and losers). The prime rib had an incredible sauce glazing the service plate while my roasted 4-star mushrooms (side) and mushroom soup (appetizer) were so good, I was thinking about them on the ride back home, LOL... Watch out for the brussel sprouts; ours were nearly raw and too much vinegar was used, so raw *and* sour. You can always take em' home and finish cooking them, so no loss, but for a $400 bill, they *could* at least cook them. Oh! They can serve drinks from Roister here, but surprisingly, the drinks are kind-of-sort-of... average? We've had many better Wisconsin-style "Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet" cocktails elsewhere. St. Clair Supper Club's draw is definitely the experience. Tucked away in the basement of Roister, you'd never know there was another dining spot there! Upon entering, you are led into a sort of meat and potatoes speak easy. There are a number of tables in the back of the room, the main dining space is the counter/bar that faces the kitchen. The staff is preparing meals right in front of you! The menu is limited to prime rib and sides. So if you are looking for something else, you're in the wrong spot. While the prime rib was good, I was expecting more. The tower of onion rings was impressive. Overall, I'd come back but only if others in my party wanted to check out the space. This place was surprisingly bad. We love the Wisconsin supper club tradition so I took my husband here for his birthday. But immediately upon walking into the space, we were hit with an awful smell of aging meat that got worse every time a chef opened the freezer door (which was right by our table in the main dining space). The sides were passable (they are pretty basic and would be hard to mess up) but the prime rib was tough and sinewy and in a sauce that was overly salty. The beef is amazing; the rest is good-not-great. The price point is rough. Let's start with the fundamentals -- that might be the best prime rib I've had. Beautifully tender, a perfect medium rare, melty rendered fat, and balanced crusty seasoning. A thick, reduced jus underneath. St Clair absolutely must get this one thing right, and they nail it. A longish list of fairly minor complaints. The Wisco Old Fashioned was close to the real thing, but missing any detectable fizz. Creamed spinach was flavoured well, but needed better integration for the right texture. The upsell peppercorn sauce wasn't as good as the (exceptional, included) jus. The waiter began the meal by offering me water without using a keyword like "bottle" to indicate I was making a purchase (can we agree already that this is an annoying, unclassy thing to do?). Dessert was quantity over quality. The main issue that St Clair faces, though, is that it's just too expensive. Your steak will run you $65 - $90, sans starch or vegetable, which means two people could easily spend $200 on their main course alone. And look, I get that we're in Chicago and not exurban Wisconsin -- so let's compare to House of Prime Rib where, in a pricy San Francisco neighbourhood, they serve an excellent prime rib with salad and baked potato for $50. Reservations there book months out; in contrast, St Clair was nearly empty on a night that Roister was packed. I'm not sad I ate here -- but I understand why the crowd was upstairs; and next time, I'll probably join them. read more

We tried this restaurant on a recommendation and it was a huge disappointment. I think there is a certain expectation of service when you go to a restaurant that's part of a respected restaurant group, and the service here was awful. Our server, Chris A., was rude and seemed inconvenienced by everything. (Even though the restaurant was fairly dark, it didn't hide the multiple times he rolled his eyes.) In addition to his terrible attitude. He didn't do the actual job well, either. There was an extended time between entrees, he forgot about a dessert we ordered to-go, and he made an error with a reservation fee which he then told my friend would be much easier to settle if I just Venmo-ed her because he didn't want to correct the bill. Service aside, the food was gross. I ordered the shrimp cocktail and it wasn't cleaned very well. (My friend got the wedge salad, which she said was decent was but nothing special). We both got the Prime rib, and the quality of the meat was not what I expected, the crust was unpleasantly salty (and I love salt), and the au jus had an unappetizing thick consistency. I actually asked for a small plate (insert server eye roll) to try to get the meat away from the juice. My friend agreed. We both ordered the horseradish crème fraiche and she said it was way too mild in flavor. I honestly didn't even try mine because it looked like straight whipped cream. I ordered mushrooms and brussel sprouts, and both were terrible. They were so saturated in beef fat/butter/oil that they were inedible. Again, I used the small side plate to try to squeeze out all the added fat, but still ended up with a major stomachache before we even made back home. This meal was such a disappointment. I don't know if it's because we ordered the wrong things, or if it was late and the end of service and no one cared what they were serving, but I would not recommend this place to anyone. I think it's more disappointing because there are so many great options in Chicago and it felt like I flushed $200 down the drain. I was so turned off by the food that I wanted nothing to do with dessert, however, my friend got the grasshopper pie and she said it was on par with the rest of the meal. Lastly, I asked for coffee service because I really just wanted to get the taste of dinner out of my mouth. The server immediately told what he didn't have (insert eye roll) and then reluctantly asked me if I wanted to order coffee quite some time after. Well, if you can find St Clair Supper Club, hidden in the basement of Roister Restaurant, you may think you have found a hidden gem. Valet parking is offered by nearby restaurants that cover for St Clair. But it is a diamond in the rough. The prime rib is excellent, as you might expect for the prices you pay. Very often prime rib is over cooked. Ours was served rare, as it should be. There was substantial amount of fat which added to the flavor but diminished the size of the portion. That was the best thing about the restaurant. Service was slow, even though we dined early. We arrived during happy hour but no one came to visit our table for the first 10 minutes and we had to argue that the happy hour drinks menu we were given should still apply despite it now being after 6 pm. They do not have the appropriate wine glasses for the various types of wine. The after dinner sauterne was served in a candy dish. The pinot grigio was not fresh and inviting, but old, tired and yellow. Avoid. The sides we sampled, creamed spinach and assorted mushrooms were good. The Yorkshire pudding was neither hot nor fluffy. The wine list was outrageously expensive, so we just had cocktails, about 2 each. Total cost of the dinner was $328 including a 20% tip automatically included. For that kind of money everything should be perfect, not stainless flatware, cheap tableware that you might find in a diner, and no real wine glasses. No tablecloths, just plain wood tables. DIners were very under dressed, like they had just come from the carnival. We did get a complimentary ice cream scoop for the birthday boy but butter pecan which he did not like. So overall, was it worth it? No. The prime rib was good. If you go, just order prime rib and a couple sides, skip the Yorkshire pudding (which I found an insult to all Yorkshire pudding everywhere) and order no alcohol, and maybe you will get out the door for under $200. read more

I initially had a tough time finding this spot. It's Inside Roisters. I arrived a little early for my reservation (15 minutes) . I was met by a friendly and attentive hostess who eventually got me downstairs to the bar. And there I sat. No water, no drink, no nadda. A good ten minutes later the bartender appeared and was super cool and helpful. Got my wine order to me quickly and took my dinner order. As a chef myself I absolutely loved watching the staff do their thing. Took a long time to get dinner. But that was alright with me. Loved the atmosphere and watching the kitchen team go. The King cut prime rib was good. The "on the fly" bernaise that I watched get prepared was outstanding. Yorkshire pudding was on point. All and all pretty good experience. Had dinner with 4 friends this Sat. evening. Service was exceptional - about as good as it gets. Ambience was wonderful - dark (but not TOO dark), intimate, quiet, lovely. 3 of us had the shrimp cocktail - everyone was impressed with shrimp, not so much the cocktail sauce. I had the romaine Caesar salad - nothing at all special (well, the dressing was good). For $17 it is literally a plate of romaine. 3 of us had prime rib. Everyone thought it wasn't cooked quite right; sauces were boring, too. Two of us had the very large crab cake appetizer as an entrée. I'd give the crab cake 2 out of 5 stars. Don't bother. Had sides of asparagus and Brussel sprouts. Sprouts were undercooked, the rest was passable - nothing special. Cocktails (manhattans, martinis) are very much on the small size, but mixed to perfection. Desserts were absolutely the most disappointing. We shared the grasshopper pie and carrot cake. What's the point of offering dessert if you're not even gonna TRY to make it good? The grasshopper pie was like rubber mixed with gelatin, with the saddest chocolate crust. I came here to catch up with a friend over dinner. We came quite early so the place wasn't very busy, but it was a nice enjoyable time anyway. The location is basically inside Roisters...just downtairs. The atmosphere almost gives you old school steak house/prohibition vibes as the lighting is kept quite dark, but not in an uncomfortable way. It's intimate but not cozy...and still feels open, but maybe just because it wasn't super busy. I liked and enjoy the table setting. It was fun and different and remenscient of other times (paper place map). The cocktails are delicious. The staff is fantastic and attentive. They will answer any questions you have. I was imagining prancing down the stairs with my 5 buddies and emerging several hours later with a review to silence all the haters. That isn't what happened. Here comes the cliché you've been waiting for: the food was good; the service was terrible. With our prime rib, we ordered five different side dishes. After our entrees were served we waited more than five minutes for the waitstaff to bring our sides. However, during this time and some period after I decided to flag down someone, nobody asked if everything was done to our liking or if we needed anything else. Perfection is assumed, I guess. I finally caught the attention of our primary server and asked if the sides were coming. I was met with "they should be..." as most of my friends who didn't order the $83 dish were more than halfway done with their meals. The server seemed to walk three steps to the conveniently-located open kitchen before... deciding to take care of other tables rather than reporting anything to us. Several minutes later, exasperated as my first friend finished his steak, I flagged down a woman who was not our waitress but seemed to often be speaking to the other staff. I asked "Excuse me, are our sides coming soon?" Her response: "You didn't order any sides." Deadpan: "You didn't order any sides." Alinea Group restaurant where we were prepared to spend $1000: "You didn't order any sides." I told her that we ordered five sides. Instead of a contrite apology, she seemed... doubting... and walked off to talk to the kitchen, then to our other server, then to tap away at a computer. Several minutes after that, as the four guys at my table who only ordered the $62 cut were finished, the sides did arrive. At that time, the woman told us that the restaurant would "take care of" the sides. Genuinely curious, I asked our main server whether someone did indeed approach the kitchen about our sides after I initially inquired. The reply was "Yes, of course." The implication was just... lost... on everyone at the restaurant that the meal was pretty stressful and much less enjoyable when all we did during the most crucial part of dinner was wonder what happened to our side dishes and if we should continue to let the very expensive meat cool as we waited. All this said, the prime rib was good, but not something I can get behind while charging for sauces and when Chicago Cut's is $9 cheaper with less pomp and a much better supporting cast. If you are the type of person to walk into work the next day and say "I went to the new Alinea restaurant," you will still be able to claim that with pride. If you're the type who would rather tell people about the great prime rib you had at a classic supper club concept, you'll find yourself feeling like a fool. Overall i agree with most of the reviews. The place is very average (nothing special inside and no WiFi in the basement (literally a basement). They have 4 main dishes to choose from - prime rib, fried fish, whitefish & a chicken. The rest are sides and appetizers. Nothing stood out as fantastic. The restaurant is tucked away downstairs from Roister Restaurant. Talk to the Roister host to add your name to the list, or if you have reservations. St. Clair's is a small, cozy place, with a few booths and seating along the bar. If you're seated at the bar, you can observe them carefully preparing the food. The menu is very simple, with entrées consisting of prime rib (various sized cuts) and a single special. The day we visited, the special was cod fish & chips. They only serve their prime rib medium rare. As the menu says: if you want your steak well-done (why would you??), then go to any other restaurant in Chicago. The prime rib was delicious; tender and perfectly prepared, with just the right amount of fat. The Queen is $48 (10 oz) and the King is $58 (12 oz). There are 2 larger cuts available, described as the English and the St. Clair. The green peppercorn sauce was delicious. The 50/50 mashed potatoes are named such because they consist of 50% potatoes and 50% butter. Surprisingly, they were good but not great. Just short of bland, they had a lovely texture but lacked some element of flavor. Perhaps more salt? Garlic? Hard to say, but if you make something that's half butter, it should be outstanding. The green beans were excellent; they were perfectly cooked, just crisp enough, yet not overdone. The dijon sauce was mild, and the pecans add interest to this side. This was an incredible experience! The ambiance of the Supper Club is totally different from upstairs at Roister, far more low key; it's all about eating. My girlfriend and I sat at the bar, and had the martini and Negroni to start, both were excellent. That was quickly followed by complimentary bread, which was delicious, and almost the consistency of a light cake. We then ordered the Shrimp Cocktail, which while only four pieces, were large, and clearly high quality; the cocktail sauce was also very good. The best though was the prime rib... my god was it good. I highly recommend the red wine and horseradish cream sauce. We also ordered the fried fish special with fries, which was excellent. What a dumb, overpriced, C- experience. It's like the restaurant group had to use the space where they kept their slop buckets and decided to convert it into the laziest idea imaginable in order to feed alinea group pay pigs unbelievably overpriced and mediocre food. Hope you like sitting in a poorly ventilated hotbox throughout your meal and smelling like grease when you get home. The white fish was trash, grasshopper pie was fine, prime rib was sad. read more

This was the strangest restaurant experience I have ever had. I can't imagine why anyone would go to this place more than once, and I can't imagine why Grant Achatz would have his name on this. The prime rib was...fine. The mashed potatoes were yummy, but anything would be if you put that much butter in it. There weren't any chefs, just people heating steaks. I guess the steaks are aged, and then the oven does all the work. But still strange. read more

Food was excellent. We sat at the Chef's table and the experience was great. Service and communication with the staff was excellent. The chefs spoke to us about preparation during our entire meal. We found all entrees on the menus to be reasonably priced for a restaurant in downtown Chicago. Prime Rib was a little overpriced but when you learn about preparation and what goes into it the extra dollars make sense. Overall it's a great experience. Do not try to compare to supper clubs in Wisconsin. It stands on its own. read more

We had a lovely experience on the first Friday of their opening week. The restaurant is located downstairs inside Roister, and tucked away behind a classy leather door. We arrived early and were seated in one of the booths, immediately attended to by their welcoming staff. FOOD 5/5 We opted for their special, and the manager came by to let us know we were the first diners to try their Friday fish fry. Breading was peppered and light, cod was super duper fresh and cooked to perfection. My husband stuck with the fries which came with the dish, I opted for the mashed potatoes - both amazing. We also tried the creamed spinach (done better than most steakhouses) and crab cakes. I HAVE to talk up the tartar sauce - lightly pickled and seasoned beautifully - you must try! We finished with the strawberry shortcake for dessert, which we were told is a homemade recipe from the chef's grandma - literally amazing. We are fans of freshly made desserts that aren't all about sugar - this dessert had perfectly baked shortbread topped over some liquor and freshly cut strawberries/whipped cream. It was a highlight of many during our meal. SERVICE 5/5 Gotta love it when you are about to put down an empty glass of water and the server intercepts it for a refill. They offered ice to accommodate us to make sure the water was cool enough (it was a hot day outside!) - just very thoughtful. The explanation of dishes was on point and descriptive. Manager stopped by several times, and chefs greeted us out the door. Just lovely! Loved our experience here - we will be back!! read more

Pre pandemic the food was top notch (I had dinner here 2/2020). Yesterday I had the tomato soup which was barely warm. The crab cake had a lot of breading making it very bland. The table ordered Caesar salad, carrots, 50/50 potatoes, and Yorkshire pudding all of which were ok. My drink had a large black fleck of unknown origin which I didn't fuss over while dining with family. I've been to sisters roisters (chefs tasting in the basement yrs ago), Next (anniversary menu last year) and both better although too much food for any average sized stomach. The food, service and cleanliness yesterday left a lot to be desired. The restaurant had three table occupied including my own, not shocked as to why. read more

Our food was flawless. Prime rib as good as the best steak anywhere in Chicago; a caesar salad that makes RPM's look like it came out of a bag (not that it needs help); and two things were the best versions we'd ever had: the onion rings and the four-star mushrooms. Those onion rings will be paradigmatic for years, and the mushrooms, for me, sort of redefined how thoughtful and flavorful this ubiquitous side can be. Pretty surprised by the negative reviews, which seem to have two flavors: people disappointed that this isn't RPM-by-Achatz; and people disappointed this isn't a 60-year-old restaurant in northern Wisconsin. If St Clair Supper Club were located in RPM Steak's space, a couple would pay $400 for their meal and think they'd gotten a bargain (rather than the "Is that all there is?" feeling you leave RPM with now). As it stands, you'll pay closer to $200 for the best steakhouse food in Chicago, including Bavette's, and an ambiance and experience that is assertively anti-steakhouse. Almost, you might call it, a supper club? To give these reviews some credit, I'd agree a lot hangs on the intentionally rough-edges of "supper club", and that if you're expecting "$200 at a Chicago steakhouse", you could miss what we loved about St. Claire. Unlike any other Alinea restaurant, your meal will be shorter, and your service a little slower and less polished - but also more casual and friendly. And, I think this is key, unpretentious. I can't say just how *comfortable* I felt at this meal, probably more than at any since the pandemic began. It's a credit to the experience that nothing's hidden behind a haze of tuxedo-clad servers and 30-foot ceilings - nothing about St. Claire is desperate to impress, and the food is so good that it doesn't have to be. To extend our evening a bit, we left and had dessert at another steakhouse staple (and candidly, a personal favorite), Swift and Sons, right across the street. Amid gleaming brass, nicer glassware, and beautiful people, we sat and watched as a blue-jacketed server put on an achingly desperate magic show for a couple just a little too eager to get their money's worth. It is true that, among the many great things at St. Claire, you won't find that here. read more

Arrived with my wife and parents to a nice server and host. Arrived somewhat late as it took 15 minutes for a valet to arrive. The valet arrived after apologizing that he was also servicing the restaurant on the north west corner of the street. Drinks were ordered. My father ordered a Buffalo Trace/Rocks. A buffalo trace Old Fashioned arrived. My wife ordered a Tequila (cant remember the name, it was 20/shot on their menu) with a side of club soda. A server mistook her half shot remaining as being finished and cleared it from the table without asking. I ordered a mid sized prime rib and while I understand nothing to do with prime rib is 'lean' about half of mine was inedible. When compared to other patrons dining on the same dish, the cut placed in front of me had about 50-70 percent more fat. Upon leaving the restaurant I stopped in the restroom to find a relatively unkept area with a full garbage that patrons were now placing used hand towels on top of the trash can. I must say that all of the staff were nice but rather... Overworked. The woman who seated us and took our orders was found taking orders at Roister upstairs while we were leaving. We dined here 4 years ago and at that time would have given the restaurant 5 stars. Pandemic is no longer an excuse for such a terrible experience. If you want a horrible version of a Wisconsin supper club at three times the price, this is the place for you. I have probably been to 10 to 20 Wisconsin supper clubs over the past 30 years and they are such a wonderful kitschy throw back to the '70s that they are generally unassumably wonderful and hard to resist. I thought that St Clair would try to emulate that type of experience but I was let down. First of all, when we got there we got downstairs at the time of our reservation and they tried to seat us at the bar. In Wisconsin, the bar is for drinking. Rarely do people eat at the bar unless it is so crowded that they have no other option unless they are willing to wait an hour. We were immediately taken to the bar and menus were dropped in front of us. There were only four or five tables downstairs and they were all occupied but it was predetermined that we were going to sit at the bar by the host. I pushed back and said we were happy to wait and they seemed slightly put off by this. When we did get seated I felt like they were put off by my request. In some but by no means all Wisconsin's supper clubs the highlight of sitting down is when a simple relish tray is set on the table. It is by no means a staple but if you really want to nail the supper club this is the easiest way to start. Dollars to donuts it would have cost St Clair nothing to add this to the ambiance but they just completely missed the boat. The super expensive steaks and sides were passable but for the money were incredibly hard to digest. The highlight of most supper clubs is usually the baked potato that comes with your filet or your prime rib or whatever but St Clair opted for mashed potatoes that were creamy and buttery but nothing like something you would get at a supper club. I just got the feeling that whoever opened and runs this restaurant has heard of supper clubs in Wisconsin and has some of their own preconceived notions of what they are. But they really have no idea. read more
