it is obviously still a neighborhood institution, but the prices are REALLY reflecting the times (I believe this plate of crab was $250mp?) and the rice and garlic bread isn't free anymore. still worth purchasing the garlic bread to dip in the sauce

    Moldy quesadilla

Went to eat with my family, asked for a steak dinner to go for my daughter due to her having to work and we wanted to take her a plate. As she heated up her food she saw mold in 1 of her quesadillas. Called the restaurant and the employee was understandable and put us on a brief hold to talk with the owner, she then told us OWNER didn't believe us and that we weren't there long ago that they checked the pack of tortillas used to make our quesadillas and that NONE had a trace of it. Asked us we can come back and they'll offer discount but truly don't want that because I spend money to go eat in a restaurant it's not free, I'm excited to have dinner and don't want to be checking if my food has mold.

The menu is full of affordable, shareable, flavorful platters-- it's a fun spot to go with a group for any occasion! My group of 6 shared the raw oysters, octopus ceviche, and seafood platter. Besides the raw oysters which were flavorless, the other 2 dishes were great. The ceviche was fresh and flavorful and the seafood platter was DENSE with both flavor and volume. Super good value and the service was excellent too. Also BYOB!

First, this place is BYOB. Small restaurant but has two levels with plenty of seating. We had great severs that came to check on us plenty of time and got us buckets of ice for our drinks. We started our meal with some shrimp ceviche and their special oysters which was topped with shrimp, octopus and some fresh veggies. My husband and I shared the deep fried red snapper which was delicious. Nicely fried and flavorful. Definitely will need to come back and try other dishes on the menu.

SUCH LARGE PORTIONS! The platter on the menu said feeds 2-3 and there were 4 hungry people in our party so we ordered the Alegrias Platter and another dish but the platter was more than enough food for us all!! The side dish of garlic bread, fried rice, and fries that comes with the platter was good to soak some extra sauces and eat alongside the seafood. The server was super helpful and even let us use two tables until another party needed it to hold all our food!! They also gave us recommendations on what to order and service was relatively fast. Lots of their menu is based on market price so varies so be sure to ask! Everything is super tasty and flavorful though and they even make a lot of the seafood easy to eat by pre-cracking some of the shells on the platter and opening up the shrimp. Great place for flavorful and large portions of seafood!!

10/10 would recommend. This place is amazing - The food is fresh and flavorful, the BYOB atmosphere is super fun, and everyone had a great time!

It's a dark and stormy December night with the wind blasting the rain sideways and I'm hungry. Upon being seated with no wait- magically ceviche and Chips appear. Fairytale come true. *5 stars We tried the Sangria which is more like a Bloody Mary mimosa especially with the tajin on top. Its weird initially but I actually like it. Can't explain the experience just try it - YOLO. We had the Charola Mixa, it was humongous. That's mussels, crab legs, and the most shrimps/prawns I've seen in a dish. With extra sides of rice or fries this will easily feed 5 to 6. This was almost gluttony. Why the *stars - it's just this side of pricey and the shrimps this Wednesday night was not the freshest but I'm nit picking

I was recommended this place from a friend of a friend, the location reminds me of a small mom and pop restaurant. Since I love seafood, I decided to go all out and order the Alegrias Special and boy it did not disappoint. I will definitely recommend and return in the future. Everything about it was cooked/boiled to perfection, and the flavors were spot on. Customer service was superb. Also, you can BYOB They prepare drinks but they don't sell Alcohol.

I've been wanting to try this spot for a while, and I took my parents to experience it with me. We were first greeted with complementary ceviche tostada, which was fresh and delicious. We had no idea what to order (the menu is overwhelming with pictures and no prices), but our waiter pointed us right away to the special platter big enough to feed 3-4 people. That was the perfect dish to order for us because we loved the variety of seafood - lobster, crab, scallops, octopus, shrimp, etc - and the quality and amounts of it all too! The sauce was delicious, and we had a good amount of seafood leftover. The fries, fried rice, and garlic bread that came with it was also scrumptious. My dad's virgin pina colada (we didn't bring our own alcohol with us oops!) was very refreshing with the meal. The servers were so nice and explained that everything was made fresh to order too! It definitely tasted like it. Overall the price was well worth the value of quality and amount we got too - around $150 for the huge platter.

Hmm not crazy about Alegrias. Went on Sunday with a good friend. The food was good, but the service was pretty bad. I arrived and, a tad awkwardly, stood near the bar to ask where I could sit. At least three workers saw me and just ignored me until I stopped one on his way to a table to confirm what is the protocol for getting a table. I was told any clean table. We placed our order and went with sharing the stuffed lobster, crab legs and shrimp dish. I wish I remembered the name. We were brought this ceviche appetizer which tasted ok. Our main dish came out fairly quickly and it was so much food! The menu says 2-3 people but it really is enough for 3-4. In the time we were there, I think someone checked in on us once and I had to get up soon after our dish was brought to get utensils for opening the crab legs. I also asked 2x for the server to bring our bill once we finished. I personally won't be back but glad I finally got to try it.

It was dimly lit inside and there was a guitarist playing music. We decided to do the 3 course Prince Geja's combination. The first course included swiss Gruyère cheese fondue with assorted breads, vegetables and fruits. After that they brought out Prince Geja's combination which was beef, lobster tail, shrimp, chicken breast, and sea scallops which you were able to cook in the boiling hot broth. I really liked how there was 8 different side sauces brought out so you could add some more flavor to the meat and seafood. The last course was chocolate fondue served with marshmellows and a side of fire. It was as if you were making smores because it also came with some graham cracker sprinkles. It also came with some fruits to dip into the chocolate fondue as well. The service was great. It was nice they had a coat check. A guitarist sits somewhere against a brick wall and plays music lightly but energetically. Service is friendly from start to finish and smiles are on everyone's faces. The menu is pretty easy to understand. You can get a three-course meal, or you can get each entree à la carte. You have two fondue candles in front of you, one for the cheese and dessert, and the other for the oil. We chose the three-course meal, and it was delightful. We started with the cheese appetizer. You get a basket of bread and fruit and we chose the seasonal cheese to dip. The oil for our meat was then left to heat, and we received a massive platter of veggies and meats for our main course. We chose the option for all selections of meat and seafood. After trying all the meats, I would opt for the lobster and shrimp. You can also substitute the oil for a broth. I would like to try the broth for next time. In one of the shakers, Gejas makes their own meat spice mix. It's recommended to put on the meats and even the desserts. It's a mix of tangy and savory and was a great compliment to the meal. We then chose the seasonal dessert, a white chocolate with vanilla cookies. Fruit, marshmallows, and churros to dip. We were so full by the time dessert came, but we enjoyed a few bites and took it home. The three-course meal, with five types of meat, came with about 10 pieces of meat. It doesn't look like a lot of food, but it truly is, with the apps, veggies, etc, your stomach will be full when you walk out of here. They also start the entire course with a mixed salad (so technically it's a four-course meal). It was very fairly priced, as well. Initially looking at the prices, you may think it's expensive, but it truly is a value with the amount of food they serve. This was rated as most romatic restaurant in Chicago. Its ambiance gives you the romantic feel, the guitarist adds to the atmosphere, and the staff is professional and friendly. This really was a great place and we enjoyed our time and meal.

I really wanted to like it; this was a nine-year anniversary dinner. The restaurant felt a bit bare and sterile, I think I was maybe expecting a little more decor on the table for a Michelin star restaurant. To echo several of the reviews below, the salad was awkward to share and scanty, the soup was good but the bread served with it felt like an afterthought, the sturgeon wasn't anything special though the sauce was quite good, and we are pretty sure the cut of beef was not wagyu or if it was it was not cooked the right way. All of the food was presented tastefully with meticulous attention to detail. The salad is brought out as a shared dish, which is potentially a bit awkward. Not a problem since I was dining with my husband, but I would have preferred my own salad if I was with a less familiar party. The silverware and dishes were works of art in and of themselves, but our table was scratched up considerably. My dessert was presented very creatively - although my husband's was much more straightforward. Dessert was an optional add-in, so a separate bill was brought out for this at the end. I'd never been to Willow Room and liked that they had a four course dinner menu, with items I liked. I was able to make a reservation for a Saturday night at 8:15pm. PARKING Parking on Halsted on a Saturday night can be a nightmare, and it did take a minute to find street parking. North of the 1800 block is busier because there are several restaurants within a two block radius. Side streets are permit parking after 6pm. Meters on Halsted are $2.50/hr. ATMOSPHERE Willow Room was pretty packed. We had a reservation for 8:15pm and my party of two was seated right away. The restaurant features a full bar, dim lighting and is nice and roomy. They have banquette seating around the perimeter, in addition to tables in the middle. SERVICE Our server, who was very nice and accommodating during our dining experience, came by and gave us our menu's. I had already decided on the RW menu and after review, my friend was interested in the Beef Wellington (not on RW menu). Our server informed us that normally the whole table had to order off of the RW menu if one person does, but said she would check with the kitchen since this was the last day of RW. Luckily, we were able to proceed with ordering from different menu's. FOOD I ordered a raspberry Cosmopolitan. I'm a Riesling/Moscato girlie, but I tasted the Riesling and didn't like it. RW dinner was priced at $60. I ordered: First Course: Caesar Salad (Typical salad, was good) Second Course: Mussels (Tasted fine, came with a baguette) Third Course: Short Rib (Could've been slightly more tender and better seasoned. I've definitely had better. Wouldn't order again.) Fourth Course: Orange Ricotta Donuts (Donuts were very good. Three were served, a few more would have been more filling.) My friend ordered a glass of Pinot Noir and: Truffle Fries (Fries were very tasty. I would order again if I went back.) Beef Wellington (The breading was buttery and very good. The beef could've been more seasoned. I wouldn't order.) Key Lime Pie (Was not sweet and had no taste. When our server came back and saw it was uneaten, she offered to take it off the bill. It should be removed from the menu altogether.) The busboys and server were very attentive. Our water glasses were always filled. OVERALL The atmosphere was nice, our server was great. Of all the food we ordered, I would order the truffle fries and Cosmopolitan again. I did leave full and did take my leftover Short Rib to go. Main dishes needed more seasoning.
