The service and consistency is why I always go back, I've never had a bad experience. It's amazing! I know they have a good lunch buffet too, I've been there once and it was great! The s/o always orders the chicken makhni, and I typically rotate between the different fish curries. We have tried most of their breads (naan, roti, paratha, puri, and bhatura)--nothing beats the naan. Only reason why I'm not marking it a 5-star is because the service is slow (for to-go orders, at least)--and we've waited up to 30 minutes past their estimated pick-up time. We ordered naan, chicken curry, and chicken makhani. The naan was old and the chicken in the chicken makhani was chopped up into tiny pieces that tasted like cardboard. The chicken in the chicken curry was normal so I'm not sure why the other dish was so awful. read more

The lunch buffet is back! My wife and I have been coming here ever since they opened but took a hiatus after covid. We were so glad to finally come back! The waiter/owner is super friendly and helpful. He kindly showed my wife which buffet items had no tomatoes since she is allergic to them. Was brought here for the first time for my birthday the other day. It was good, I enjoyed what was there. They have been open for 2months now with their buffet back, said the waiter. But the buffet really lacks a luster of options. I think there were maybe only 7 trays total it was very empty. And there was almost a full house , so everything was also pretty empty. But what I did get to eat was good. I just hope for a fuller buffet for next time. I'd like to go again and have more options. read more

Disappointing! Went for the Lunch Buffet. The food table for the buffet kept the food temperature "lukewarm", the spices were so mild as to maybe not even exist! The tandoori chicken was burnt, dry and tasteless! The Naan bread was served dry and burnt. Service was OK. Now we went in the middle of week, at 12:30PM. Prime lunch time. Maybe they are great on the weekends? I would advise everyone to skip this place. And as for value? The buffet is expensive, so it should be hot, but the food table in my opinion would NOT pass any food inspector temperature test. This was my third time at New India Gate, this experience and the two prior have all been wonderful. From the time you walk in you are greeted with welcoming and smiling faces and a warm environment. Not sure what type of fish it was. Chicken in chicken makhni was diced and felt soft, not sure if it was boiled first or what... completely tasteless. Biryani was very blah too. I'm not sure how this place has 4.5 stars. The chicken makhani or butter chicken is white meat chicken diced up finely like cat food. I visited this restaurant for lunch after reading reviews and viewing an episode of Check, Please on PBS. Sorry to say, the restaurant and overall experience was mediocre, at best and generously. The over-priced buffet had very limited options, mostly in gravies or curries that were bland, with no flavor and were not very eye appealing. I ordered from the menu hoping a freshly prepared dish from the kitchen would be better; sadly it was not. The tandoori chicken looked the part and the portion size was generous, but again the item had no flavor and was probably cooked in a regular oven rather that a tandoori or grill. The facility looks a bit long in the tooth and is in need of some upkeep, starting with the front and the facade and the restroom had no soap or paper. I love all kinds of Indian food and was really looking forward to a great experience after reading reviews. I will keep looking. read more

I finally tried my first East Indian restaurant in Arizona! I lived in Yuba City, Ca. for 32yrs where there is a large East Indian population and where the largest Indian festival Diwali is held outside of India! So I am very familiar with Indian food. I ordered one of my favorite appetizers, Fish Pakora. It's great with beer. I was surprised when they brought the dish out. There were only six pieces. I'm used to a plate full of fish. To their credit, it was the best tasting Fish Pakora I tried. I just wish there were more. Then there was the Tandoori Chicken. It was prepared differently than I'm use to. Usually the tandoori chicken is prepared with grilled peppers and onions naked, not in a tomatoey type sauce. Slices of lemon is usually served with it to squeeze on the chicken. But again, this dish was delicious. Next was the Chicken Korma. There was only about a quarter of a breast in this dish for $14.00. It was prepared well and tasted delicious, but I'm used to more of a creamier sauce. The garlic naan was good. It had more of a crispy cracker texture in more places than I like. I prefer more of a softer bread-like texture where I can fold and scoop my food, especially the saucier dishes. Overall, I like the food. It's prepared well. I just wish the portions were a little larger. Oh, the bathrooms can use some detail. A commode was not very clean (a little splatter) and the sinks were in bad shape. I come to New India Gate every time I visit Arizona. It's so good and the owners are so friendly! They always come and chat our table up and give us the best service. We always start with the beef samosas which are sooo good and have beef and peas inside. Sometimes we get the tandoori chicken wings which are also great. I'm the most basic bitch when I get Indian food and get chicken tikka masala, but theirs is especially good. I order medium and it's the perfect medium - not too spicy but not too mild which I find a lot of places struggle with. The naan is great too and lately I'm really into Paratha. By far THE worst experience I have had with a restaurant. Money grabbing and dishonest. The food has also gone down in quality. There was a time I would quiet frequently order their Dal Maharani but lately the dal comes severely undercooked. My most recent experience with them was a delivery through Uber Eats experience. The restaurant lied about giving my food to two drivers through Uber Eats and then also claimed they prepared my food for the third time. I am out $60+ bucks no food and a bitter bitter experience with the employees. Order at your risk you may not get the food and the restaurant will lie and say they made your food so too bad for you. UPDATE: its unfortunate the restaurant stands by their false claims. To the manager: Uber Eats communicated that no order was picked up. My fiancée and I were on one of our usual weekend excursions to run errands and were in the mood for something quick and satisfying for lunch. A recent review by my fiancée of lunch options close to home yielded this result, so we decided to give it a try and we were glad we did. We arrived just before noon on a Saturday and the restaurant was still fairly quite, however business picked up quite a bit while we were there. The dining area was clean, open, and the table settings were clearly above average for a lunch buffet. The staff were very friendly, prompt, an courteous. It was also obvious that some of the customers were regulars. The buffet menu included an impressive variety of popular Indian dishes, including Tandoori Chicken, Goat Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, Palak Paneer, and Green Bean and Potato Curry. Freshly made Garlic Naan was delivered to our table, which was included with the meal. My fiancée enjoyed it so much she requested a second order. The desserts included Mango Custard and Gulab Jamun. Best of all, for me, was the self-serve Chai Tea dispenser. I was on my third cup by the time we had dessert and it was the perfect accompaniment. First visit here and I wanted to be impressed because of the reviews. First let me reiterate as others have the service and attentiveness of staff is impressive. I am not sure if they were having a bad cooking day or the food prepped is normally made as described. The galub jamun was very very dense, and not light inside at all. It was served cold instead of hot. Hot vs cold is a simple preference. The kheer was almost like a water consistency and had no tapioca and specks of rice here and there. The mango custard had good flavor and had a nice amount of mango pieces in it. The desserts are about 50% of why I like an Indian buffet. So this was extremely disappointing to say the least. The tamarind chutney was excellent. The tandoori chicken was very dry, one of the first times I have encountered this. Usually it is extremely moist and juicy with rich flavor depth. The onions with it were fantastic in flavor though. I tried to enjoy the goat curry but I kept finding chips of bones throughout the gravy. If there is one thing I abhor it is having to reach into my mouth at a meal to pull out bad pieces of food or bone fragments. It wasn't just once but at least 3 times. The chicken dishes were decent in flavor but again the sauces were a bit runny. The meat was tender. The garlic naan bread was perfectly done, very light in texture. The rice was pretty good. Overall the buffet price point reflects the product line they are able to offer. A restaurant isn't going to serve you items which are a huge profit loss because they would soon be out of business. read more

Before you read my review, you should know this about me: 1. I'm a southern Californian born in Taiwan. 2. Imagine my surprise when I realize the banquet was $1 more than what was put on another Yelper (probably increased in the last year; it's now $9.99). Then it kind of just went down from here... My issues and concerns: 1. Everything, and I mean everything was chicken minus one dish. OH dear. Other than the vegetarian dishes, of course. The spinach dish - I can't remember how to say or spell it - was so bland and WATERY. So weird! 2. To placate to the masses, they "dumbed down" their food. Indian food is SUPPOSED o be spicy and flavorful. None of the dishes - and I had everything but three at the buffet - were either. It was horridly disappointing. Having said that... 3. The service was impeccable. I mean, IMPECCABLE. I don't remember the last time I was treated with such respect and gotten so much attention (not annoying either) at a restaurant. I was really, REALLY impressed since this is somewhat unusual at Indian restaurants I've experienced in CA. 4. Lots of parking - I mean it. It's in the same shopping center as lots of stores but there is a TON of parking - always love this for this southern Californian. It's not BAD food. It's just not GOOD food. Ray and Rural is quite the foodie intersection. I met up with some friends here on an early Saturday afternoon for their lunch buffet, which is $9.95. We chose garlic naan vs plain because garlic is life. They have a lot of dishes to choose from, including several vegetarian and vegan options. I went with white rice, pulao rice, chicken biryani, chicken tikka masala, chicken tandoori, saag paneer, mushroom curry, aloo vada (potato balls), and aloo gobi. Their sauces included mint chutney, tamarind, and a hot red, which I mixed together. All was good, and I didn't even try everything, like the lamb or goat curry (a bit too strong for my liking). Their desserts included carrot halwa, rice pudding, gulab jamun, and mango custard which looked like nacho cheese! Oh it threw me off but it was delicious, and they only serve it on the weekends. We also got some chai which was a nice way to end our meal. Service was friendly and attentive, our plates were cleared away in a timely manner and waters refilled. The restaurant is spacious and they do takeout orders as well. There are some Yelp deals for that and for ordering entrees, if you're not interested in the buffet. Overall, spice level was medium but I appreciated their hot sauce at the end, and the cucumber and lettuce to cool down.
