Kothu Parotta as is without additions served with Salna. Highest spice. Veg, dairy free and egg free.
    Evie S.

This restaurant was so excellent in every single way. First and most importantly, the food was absolutely delicious, well spiced, complex and interesting. What drew me here is the specialization in Tamil Nadu regional cuisine. My husband and I started with the Kothu parotta, a popular South Indian street food, in Tamil Nadu, made by shredding and stir-frying flaky parottas with spices, onions, tomatoes and ordered it at the highest spice level. We were the first customers at the restaurant and it took a little while to prepare and as soon as it came out we knew it would be good. It was clearly so fresh. It had so many flavors in it and I loved the flavors together with the curry leaves on top. Both my husband and I LOVED the texture of the dish. The texture and the banana leaf on the plate reminded us a little of Puerto Rican Pasteles in banana leaves which we love. I have been craving this Kothu Parotta for the past 6 days since having it! It came with salna- a side sauce also typical in Tamil Nadu. I enjoyed pouring it on the Kothu parotta. They also serve flakey Parotta that's not shredded and stir fried with spices but just served with the salna side sauce. But for our second dish we wanted to try something different and went with the Pan Roast Eggplant Masala, also at the highest spice level. The eggplant masala dish came out quicker than the first dish but was also clearly very fresh and done so perfectly. The eggplant was cooked so well, with a char flavor outside and perfect softness inside and the sauce was so delicious. The highest spice level for this dish was less spicy than the prior but super flavorful regardless. The place got filled up fast by this time. To end our meal we ordered the Sukku Coffee, which doesn't actually have coffee. It is a caffeine-free herbal drink, more like tea made from ginger (sukku), coriander seeds , black pepper and a sweetner. The drink is naturally dairy free. It took a long time for it to come out but given the freshness of everything we realized that just means they are making it completely form scratch on the spot- and when we tasted it we knew we were right- it was clear the ginger and spices were processed to order. It was served hot and was delicious, very ginger forward. Beyond the food, the service was attentive, the staff smiled at us a few times which felt nice, the place felt very clean with a clean bathroom. I really can't wait to go back and try more here and will absulutly proiritze this at future visits in Phoenix. I don't typically repeat restaurants when visiting cities I don't live in unless I find them to be very special and find that they enrich me with new expriences and cuisines I haven't tried. All of the dishes we tried were naturally egg free and dairy free and the restaurant was very good at communicating regarding this both by Instagram before the visit and during the visit so I definitely would recommend this place for vegan, vegetarian etc. I tend to reserve 5 stars for a limited amount of places but this place is an easy 5 star for me. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! An Evie favorite!

We ordered the masala dosa (they very kindly split the batter so that we could have two), the Chetinnad chicken curry and the Rogan Josh. Everything tasted amazing! No notes. By far the best Indian restaurant I have tried in AZ! We got everything with mild spice and it was the perfect combination of heat and taste. The staff were attentive and the portions were generous. Will definitely come back for more.

The food is authentic and wonderful! The server made wonderful recommendations. We tried a bunch of new things tonight. It was reasonably priced. They offered a lot of variety. I noticed a lot of vegetarian options. There are several varieties of proteins to choose from. I wish it was a larger restaurant because it's so good. I think it's going to be very popular. It's a casual attire place. Anyone will feel welcome.

Food portions are share able sizes and everything we ordered was delicious. The Tandoori chicken takes a little while longer to cook ~20 min, but we'll worth it with a good longer marinade making every bite flavorful. The staff were also nice, and I believe it was the owner and staff that checked in on us to check if the food was to our liking. It is a little smaller with Indian music playing in the background, but the food is what will bring us back.

After my most recent visit, I don't think I'll be back. We went about an hour after they opened, and the buffet was already in bad shape. The chicken tikka masala tray was practically empty, and we had to fish around just to find a few small pieces of chicken. The rice was hard, like it had been sitting for a long time instead of being freshly made. They also got rid of the carrot dessert that used to be on the buffet (one of my favorites), so even the selection isn't the same anymore. The drinks and desserts were just as disappointing. The mango lassi was chunky and weird instead of smooth and creamy, and the rice pudding was so thin and liquidy it was almost like sweet milk. The only good thing was the naan bread, which was still warm and tasted fine. The staff has completely changed too. The younger guy with the beard and turban who used to be there is gone, and now it's a bunch of older guys who don't seem to know what they're doing. They weren't outright rude, but they seemed confused and not very engaged, and the buffet clearly wasn't being watched or refilled properly. This is not the India Oven I remember. Everything from the food to the staff has changed for the worse, and the overall experience felt sloppy and honestly a little gross compared to what it used to be.

Server came over with his notepad and looked at us to take orders, didn't say a word. When he brought the dishes, a few minutes later, he literally plopped all of them in one spot in the table without making any attempt to remember which dish went to which person. Very odd behavior The dishes on the menu are clearly marked vegetarian, vegan or contains meat. We had two dishes that were supposed to be vegan, one was a saag dish which they had placed butter over the top of. It looked delicious to everyone, but the vegans who could not eat it. When we pointed it out, they made no attempt to offer us another dish and just said oh yes, that's ghee (clarified butter) we said the menu indicated it was vegan, but again no response. The two vegans at our table just decided rather than argue, they will share the rice dish, which was also indicated as vegan. As they started to eat it, they realized there were several pieces of paneer in it. I really hope this was a one off because this was one of my favorite places to eat Indian food. Very very disappointing and no accommodation for the inedible dishes.

I have had a lot of Indian food, and this is still some of my favorite in Arizona. My go-to order here is usually between the malai kofta, shahi paneer, lamb korma (please try this), and the chicken 65. I find medium spice to be the perfect level of heat. The depth of flavor in their curries are incredible. The shahi paneer in particular is a great example of how precise their process must be. You can genuinely taste the combination of every spice used, and it feels like they used the perfect ratio. There are so many different notes of flavor and not a single one seems to be drowning out the other. The same can even be said about the chicken 65, but the curry is where this really shines. Also they've been really good about their rice, it was the perfect texture the last few times we've been. I can't comment on the service in-restaurant since my girlfriend and I are the kind of people to get takeout and watch a movie, but I will say the carryout ordering process has gotten significantly smoother. Ordering on the phone seems to be the way to go, and I have not had any of my orders messed up. I have had a couple times where I was awkwardly waiting for someone to be ready to help me get my order, but the wait time has generally been WAY better (like literal seconds), and staff are friendlier. THE BEST chaat I've had in the states…read more I have not had a single dish here that I have not been absolutely blown away by. We started coming here after our previous Indian spot closed down (RIP buzzing cuisine) and I cannot overstate how good this food was. The service was incredibly fast and the staff are very kind, and it's actually a pretty large place seating-wise. As others have said, I also asked for recommendations and the advice I got was super solid (mostly trying to gauge their spice level). It's $7 for a samosa chaat. In this economy. I have gone there on my lunch break to just grab a cheap bite 3+ times at this point and we have had 3 dinners from here as well. Aside from the pricing, the food itself takes risks that pay off extremely well. I often find myself going to Indian spots in AZ and feeling like the flavors have been muted or toned down to be more palatable and enjoyable for all audiences. Chaat Express does not cater to the unseasoned tongue and everything you get here is bursting with amazing, authentic combinations of herbs and spices. The flavors are just indescribably good. When BOTH of a samosa's chutney sauces are delicious (and especially when the red sauce is not overly-sweet), you know you are in for a treat. Their curries are made with the same ideology: bold, flavor-forward, and delicious. In addition, their meats are always bafflingly tender. Whether you get their goat or chicken, it will be cooked perfectly. If you're not a meat-eater, their paneer is also great and the texture is exactly what you would want to expect. I've also had their lassi, rice, and naan. I really like the way they do their naan. It's buttery but not overly-buttered, and always very fresh. Their mango lassi is also perfectly sweet with just enough of a hint of that tanginess that it stands out on its own. And again, for $4 you cannot beat that value. TLDR: this place NEEDS to do well or I will lose my mind. please come here. i am begging you to not let this place flop
