Normally I am skeptical of anything with 5 stars, but less so when they have over a thousand reviews or so. The Dhaba does not disappoint either, and deserve every five star review they get. Mental note to self, go down a level in heat to a 2 when ordering because they do it spicy! Their garlic naan was awesome, and the Chicken Tikka Masala was wonderful. The portion size was just right. The true winner however was the Tandoori chicken. We did a half order of it, and decided next time we would do a full order and an order of the Butter chicken to split. The waiters and owners were very attentive, and it was a pleasant atmosphere on the inside. Parking is a bit tight out front but there is plenty of parking out back. read more

I have given multiple 5 star reviews to the Dhaba, but our experience on Easter was not good. We arrived at opening time and were seated immediately. We were the only ones there. Our server was probably one of the worst servers I have ever had. Zero personality and literally never said one word to us. Several to go orders and Uber Eats people came in and out while we waited about 10 minutes. We finally told the man at the front desk that we needed to order and get some drinks. Server came over with his notepad and looked at us to take orders, didn't say a word. When he brought the dishes, a few minutes later, he literally plopped all of them in one spot in the table without making any attempt to remember which dish went to which person. Very odd behavior The dishes on the menu are clearly marked vegetarian, vegan or contains meat. We had two dishes that were supposed to be vegan, one was a saag dish which they had placed butter over the top of. It looked delicious to everyone, but the vegans who could not eat it. When we pointed it out, they made no attempt to offer us another dish and just said oh yes, that's ghee (clarified butter) we said the menu indicated it was vegan, but again no response. The two vegans at our table just decided rather than argue, they will share the rice dish, which was also indicated as vegan. As they started to eat it, they realized there were several pieces of paneer in it. I really hope this was a one off because this was one of my favorite places to eat Indian food. I frequently tell acquaintances about The Dhaba, as this is by far the best Indian restaurant I have ever tried. I tell them all the same thing: the first time I ate here, I was nearly moved to tears. That's no exaggeration! Perhaps I'm deeply biased, but I swear I can taste the love in their dishes. The restaurant building itself is a little old and worn, but the atmosphere inside is cozy and tasteful. Each table has a white tablecloth, dinnerware placed, and red cloth napkins. The details help elevate the vibe. They've done well with what they have. The service is always top notch. The staff is attentive to their customers' needs, while being genuine and kind. I haven't tested this theory, but based on the way they approach their patrons with such care, I think they would accommodate just about any request! They keep an eye on beverages, get dishes out quickly, and greet everyone with warmth and a smile. I have tried many Indian dishes. Though it is often regarded as less authentic Indian, I will ALWAYS order their kashmiri chicken tikka. This dish is so flavorful and creamy. It's like butter chicken, but better. I don't know what their secret is, but I love it. I also order two servings of garlic naan so I have lots left to take home. This visit, I enjoyed a couple apps, which are pictured. The samosa plate comes with two samosas, which are large (nearly the size of my fist). They are filled with a potato and vegetable mixture, which is deliciously seasoned and accompanied by a lovely sauce with chick peas. I also ordered the paneer pakore. Paneer is a lovely and popular cheese, which is used in many dishes as an alternative to meat. This paneer was fried, though, like an Indian mozzarella stick. The batter is seasoned with Indian spices, giving it a unique flavor. A great thing about The Dhaba's menu is that each item has a wine pairing suggestion to elevate the experience even more. I am committed to trying so much more of what this restaurant has to offer. If you love Indian or your considering branching out and trying it for the first time, this is your new spot. I used to go here all the time in college but lately it's gone downhill. Not sure what happened. The curries were all bland and flavorless. The tikka tasted like tomato sauce. I am Indian and feel that curries should have an array of spices in it. Maybe this place just does it differently now. Service was also sub-par. I asked for a chai at the beginning of the meal and received it at the very end. Not a friendly or inviting tone from any of the employees which made us feel like we had to hurry to eat. Stopped by last week for the first time in a while and it was just as great as I remember! The restaurant was really busy when we went, but the staff was still very friendly and attentive. I ordered the Maharaja Patiala Tandoori Thali with lamb. The lamb curry was rich and spicy, and came with slices of naan, a helping of biryani topped with tandoori chicken, buttery and well spiced daal, raita, and a desert. I love this menu item, it's huge and comes with a little bit of everything, which makes it perfect for those like me who struggle to just choose one dish. I've ordered from this restaurant over the phone several times without any issues, but today's experience was extremely disappointing. When we arrived to pick up our order, the food was not ready. Instead of helping resolve the issue, the attendant immediately had an attitude and insisted that we must have called the wrong number, rather than trying to understand or assist. There was no effort to be accommodating or solution-oriented. After some back and forth, he offered to remake the order--but we had to wait again and still pay, despite the inconvenience. we were also told not to order over the phone again. If that's the case, then the restaurant shouldn't be accepting phone orders in the first place. This was especially frustrating because we ordered ahead specifically so the food would be ready in time for us to break our fast. Instead, it caused an unnecessary delay to what should have been a family meal. Really disappointing experience and poor customer service. Don't think I'll be visiting anytime soon. read more

As I sat down, they got this papad with Chutneys! The setup got me in the mood to enjoy some chaat. Ordered Papadi Chaat and it was lip smacking ! The Papadi itself was freshly fried, I think. I tried the chicken tikka, and it was phenomenal -- tender, flavorful, and perfectly charred with that smoky tandoori goodness. The sauce had just the right amount of spice and creaminess, and you can tell the chef knows exactly what they're doing. Every bite had that balance of flavor that makes you slow down just to savor it. I've also tried a few other dishes here, and each one has been consistently delicious and beautifully presented. What an absolute downfall for a place that used to be one of our family favorites. Every time we've visited Phoenix from Chicago, The Dhaba was a must. After this experience with our group of 11, including 3 kids, that tradition ends here. The Dhaba has always served complimentary papad to start, until now. When it didn't arrive, we politely asked. The waiter nodded, said it was "coming," and walked away. Ten minutes later, still nothing. We asked again.. same story. Finally, I went to the counter myself, only to be curtly told they "don't serve papad until after the food order is placed." Really? That's never been their policy. And if it is now, a simple explanation would have sufficed. Instead, we got brushed off repeatedly while other tables (all non-Indians) were being served papad right in front of us. That was the final straw. What used to be a warm, family-friendly restaurant now feels rude, dismissive, and frankly discriminatory. We left, and we're glad we did. No food is worth being treated with such arrogance and double standards. The Dhaba hasn't just lost our business; it's lost our respect. Thankfully, this bitter experience led us to try a new place in Gilbert.Tap & Tikka where we had a wonderful meal full of fresh flavors and genuinely warm service. Horrendous service. Not sure if they've changed hands, but it's nothing compared to what it once was. When we arrived, the host told us 5-10 minutes, it ended up taking 20. This wouldn't have bothered me if they hadn't seated two couples that came in after us. There was no method of putting a name in. Multiple people manned the host table, so nobody knew who had arrived first. After seated, we waited and waited and waited. Nobody helped us. Finally I returned to the host stand to ask if anyone could attend our table. Once someone came over, we threw in our order. We ordered chai but that took forever to come out. We didn't get the appetizer everyone around us got. Our first entree came out 15 minutes before the rest, and without the rice it was supposed to come with. The naan we ordered was wrong. When we asked for more chai, they advised us we'd be charged again. That wasn't the case the times we came in the past, which is why I think they may have changed hands. Came here on a whim, and we immediately fell in love. We got there a little late but they still accommodated (We had planned on a to go order but they invited us to stay). Food: first off those little thin chips that break and you dip dip in the sauces. Amazing texture and the flavor was perfect. This was the first mango lassi that I actually liked. It was so good, I forgot I didn't like them. Then the samosas came out. They were full, packed to the rim with delicious flavor. We ordered Paneer "naan" with the tikka masala. Came to the dhaba for a first date about a week ago. There was a slight wait but nothing outrageous. The whole experience from the beginning to the end was spot on. The service was prompt and friendly and the food was really good. The menu is rather large and can be a bit overwhelming if you don't know the dishes. I asked the server to bring me the best lamb or goat dish and he chose what I believe was the Nizami biryani. AMAZING!!! The desserts at the end were lovely and delicious. I had to update my review from forever ago to remind everybody that this is STILL 5 stars and STILL one of the best restaurants in AZ hands down. Phenomenal, attentive service every time I come here. Again, Karan is super nice and so is Enu. And all of the staff!! Everyone is always making sure our cups are constantly filled and we are constantly happy. We are treated like family here and taken in no matter how busy it seems (and of course it is always busy - because it is an AMAZING PLACE!). This place honestly has my business for life and it should have yours! I say this without an ounce of bias in my body. The Dhaba is a regular date night spot for me and bae at this point because not only is the food simply amazing, but so are the people.
