Masala Maniac is located on the Mill Avenue District aka Downtown Tempe. Time for Indian food. Before this business arrived, it was a Mediterranean restaurant. The menu continues to offer some of those dishes. The hubby said he was going to order something different. However he went back to the true and tried; Chana masala, garbanzo beans with onions in a spicy tomato sauce. I ordered from the Mediterranean menu with a chicken shawarma in a pita with French fries. Staff brought us waters and the freshly cooked dishes. The Chana masala comes with yellow rice and naan bread. The wrap comes with fries, ketchup and tzatziki sauce. Nice presentation. I was somewhat disappointed with the wrap. The chicken was a bit dry. The tzatziki sauce did help. I know for our next visit to order the Indian dishes. The Chana masala sauce was fairly spicy; maybe 3 out of 5 stars hotness. Thankfully there's lots of rice with naan to cool your mouth. It seemed like a different cook was working behind the scene. Maybe a new and different meal for next time for both of us. Whew...was the AC out?? It was HOT in here. Like felt the same as outside. The bathroom is located just outside the back of the restaurant and had great AC. Its a really cute place with fun modern decor and seems very clean, but the heat was tough. Its order at the counter but they do bring your items out to you. There was just one woman working front of house today and she was absolutely on top of service and ensuring we had what we needed and everything was good. The menu is a bit strange to me -- part Indian food, part Mediterranean like gyros. I ordered a samosa smash which is their name for samosa chaat and unfortunately I really didn't care for it. It was drowning in sauces and no crunchy bits, and quite sweet. They do have beer, wine and cocktails but no cocktail menu, which seems a missed opportunity. This place is super cool! I absolutely LOVE the ambiance here, the neon lights and wall art were so much fun to look at! The colorful seating was also nice. Parking is on the street or in lots. There was outdoor and indoor seating, which included bar area seating. When I arrived around 430pm on Saturday, it was not busy at all, but it did pick up over the next few hours that I was there. The menu includes Mediterranean and Indian dishes. I decided to order the chicken tikka masala which comes with naan and rice! Everything was great! The service was amazing and she walked us through the menu since it was our first time there. We sat outside which was nice and she served us, coming back to check in on us and how we were doing. The cheese naan was delicious along with the Chicken Tikka Masala. The side salad could use some more of the dressing but besides that everything was cooked well. We also decided to substitute one of the side naans with garlic naan which was okay. My boyfriend and I went to Masala Maniac, one of Tempe's new food spots and it was really good. I ordered the beef gyro plate which came with a bunch of food and I left stuffed. The meat was perfectly seasoned and the hummus it came with was amazing. We sat outside and it was great to see the sun come down over Mill Ave and see the town come to life. It was during grad season but the place didn't have a long wait at all. I loved the vibes of this restaurant and they had different games on the tvs inside. The bar was also really cool and it looks like it'd be a fun spot to stop and eat at night. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area. read more

This is a nice, small, colorful spot in the middle of downtown Tempe. They really need to remove the "cooked to order" on their menu as I found out that the item I wanted was already pre-cooked and I couldn't customize it like I thought. Instead, I got a maniac combo which includes 3 types of meats along with rice, salad, hummus, and bread. My favorite of the meats were the gyro. I also had a mango lassi which is not on their menu for some odd reason. This all cost me $23.24. I ordered out from here and they were decent the first time but ruined my taste the second. They're not consistent. Second time, the naan was burnt and hard to pull apart. The chicken was overly chewy and the mango lassi was not hitting, tasted too milky. read more

We saw this location on Tik-Tok, we have been looking for a good Indian restaurant in AZ. The restaurant was very clean and pretty, we were the only guest in the restaurant for about an hour and I let the bartender know it was our first time here. We had the Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Biryani and cheese naan and it was so good! I wish the masala was a little more spicy, but overall we enjoyed our food and we were stuffed after. The only thing this place lacked was good service. Like I said we were the only guests there, we had to keep going up to the bar to get drink refills and napkins and we felt like we were a bother but with no one else there and the bartender sitting watching tv it felt off. It was not close to closing or anything, had she came and asked how our food was we would've told her how much we enjoyed it but she dropped out food off and never said a word after that even when we left. The ambience in the establishment is nice but that's about it, as I ate the gyro it just kept getting worse. The meat they served me was extremely dry and hard it seems like it's been sitting in the pan for a while, very disappointed that they would serve meat like this to a customer. The water also taste like dirt, they definitely need to do something about there water filtration. Where to start?! When you first walk in the vibe is vibrant, the aromas are astounding, and the staff is spectacular! We had a party of 4 that all had various dishes so we could share. I ordered takeout, I had the paneer masala and the flavor was great but not nearly enough rice for how much masala. I ordered the naan bread and the entire bottom was burnt to the crisp but the samosas made up for it. Best samosas i've had in a while. Atmosphere: My friend and I went for early dinner. It was a casual, bright counter service place with modern Indian posters but deafening music (night club dance floor volume level.) Even when we were the only table, cashier/ server said he couldn't reduce volume as controlled by owner, who didn't respond to calls. Food: Chicken kabob plates were not as described online, entirely devoid of hummus. Instead the $16 + plates were presented as side salads with area of raita (yogurt salad dressing) on the plate and pita covering main entree area. The ploy to hide the disappointing entree under the pita is an insult to one's intelligence. Rice was parboiled (Uncle Ben's Instant type). I was dismayed a restaurant with a lunch buffet didn't even utilize a rice cooker to make daily batches of fresh rice. A scant amount of kebabs were scattered over the rice, less than the usual 2 skewers normally on area kebab dinner plates. The portion literally looked like ONE small 7" skewer amount, such as in a kebab pita sandwich at most area Greek cafes. A couple kebobs on my friend's plate were burned beyond edibility, so I shared the few I had with her. The unburned kebabs were flavorful, however. We bought 1 appetizer of 2 samosas which were very good and served with little containers of tamarind chutney and raita. Service: The waiter/ cashier was very friendly and helpful, even making a good plain sweet lassi, not on menu, as I don't like mango. My friend liked her mango lassi too. I may come back and try the buffet. It looks like the owner spent time on the decor, sound track, and some good recipes. If the music volume can be controlled by staff, so conversations don't require yelling, it has the potential to be a good Mill Ave. gathering spot to eat, drink and converse. read more

Went here for my lunch break and got the lamb salad - it was AMAZING. I usually take issue with places that serve lamb because I don't think it's properly seasoned, but this lamb was delicious. The salad was so fresh and green. The ambiance in there is also really nice, and I loved all the colors. The woman at the front was super nice.
