I was really looking forward to trying here after seeing all the great reviews. Unfortunately my experience was not very good. The service and setup of the place was the best part of things. I forget our server's name, but she was very friendly and helpful. She helped my wife pick out what juice she wanted and was doing her best with all her tables on what was a very busy day. For my meal I went with the Italian veggie scramble. As you can see from the picture, it is very small. This was frustrating considering it is $15. The presentation of it with a slice of cheese just slapped on top was pretty pathetic. Not something you would expect from what is supposed to be a nice brunch spot. It tasted ok, but nothing impressive. I asked for hot sauce and was brought tobasco sauce. I am not sure why any place thinks hot sauce and tobasco sauce are even remotely similar. They taste and smell completely different. Luckily they had siracha, this made the food a little better. The greens that came with the meal were also a let down. It was literally dry spinach with no dressing, oil, anything. My wife had French toast, sausage, and home fries. The sausage was huge and more like a kielbasa than a breakfast sausage. The home fries had no seasoning and no flavor. On top of all of that, the wait for our average food was about an hour. Very poor experience overall, hopefully it was just a one off thing. read more

Decided to go back again and I'm so happy I did. On my most recent visit the staff was super friendly and helpful. They were also super nice to my kid which is a bonus. Still always love the Blueberry Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, but I also discovered the Brussels Sprouts Hash and it is amazing. I highly recommend. Came in today after running a few errands in the East Liberty area. Only about a 15-20 minute wait for a Saturday brunch which we felt was reasonable. My wife got the vanilla cinnamon pancakes and I got the jubilee burger. We shared an order for the waffle biscuits as well. The waffle biscuits were really tasty but a little small to be charging $2.50 each in my opinion. The hamburger was pretty plain Jane without any special sauce or toppings which was a bit of a letdown but the fries were decent. The pancakes were fairly large and the cinnamon flavor really came through which was nice. I think this place is a little expensive for what we got but perhaps next time we would try one of their bowls or specials which might be a bit more unique and worth it. read more

I looked over their many different menu items and I went with ordering a burger & fries with an Irish Creame coffee. I happen to be very pleased with their service as Chris was friendly & quick to take our order.  I happened to be very pleased the way my burger was season along with the tempture and degree it was cooked. TLDR: vegans and vegetarians don't always necessarily want to eat something just because it resembles a non-plant-based American breakfast staple. My people love this place and like to go here especially because I'm a vegetarian who doesn't eat eggs. That being said, it's kinda lost its luster for me because everything vegan uses Just Egg and substitutions are not allowed (I don't pretend to understand the restaurant business so I'm really not criticizing the no subs thing). I just wish there were more options that don't use Just Egg because some vegans don't even want something to taste like eggs. Like tofu scramble would be great because it's not trying to taste like eggs in my opinion. Idk if there are any vegans developing the menu but right now it feels prohibitive for a non-meat and -egg eater. Even if there was one BYO option so folks could cater to their dietary needs vs be told what they should or should like would be dope. Gorgeous place. Great staff. Just wish the menu was a little more progressive for us non-egg-eating-but-wanna-have-breakfast-with-our-meat-eating-friends folks. lol. Big fan of Kaibur Coffee for this reason. They have tofu scramble, not an egg replacement, (I know some folks "miss" eggs and want something close to it, don't get me wrong.) Fun breakfast spot with some tasty options. The interior is pretty with a lot of local art. It's great seeing a spot so supportive of the local art community. For the meal, we ordered a special chipotle breakfast burrito, cinnamon dough poppers, and hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was fantastic and stood out the most. The food was pretty good. Well...we've done it again...the universe has glutened me. It goes to show even in what seems to be the most aware environment, there can be a lack of common sense and awareness. I'm a Celiac girly and Went here for lunch with a friend today. I really wanted a sandwich.... I saw they had gluten-free bread. I got super excited! The disclaimer on their menu said they do not allow substitutions, so I had a Plan B set up... I asked our waitress if it's possible to get a sandwich on the gluten-free bread and she happily told me that is something they could do. So, very quickly, I skimmed the menu and ordered the pesto chicken sandwich. The waitress took our orders and bid us adieu. A few minutes later, she came back and informed me that the fries that came with the sandwich had cross-contamination because they were in the same fryer as other things. She asked if I wanted anything else, So I asked for a salad. I was thrilled with the awareness or so I thought... our food was delivered and I was ravenously hungry so I began chowing down on what I thought was a delicious chicken and pesto sandwich on gluten-free bread. After I had finished the first half, I finally took a chance to really look at the sandwich when I realized there were crispy onions on it... Now, not to fault Square Café, that is what generally comes on the sandwich... But if you're offering gluten-free bread and you then go back and ask the person if they can have crossing contamination with fries, logistically, Id think there was an awareness that maybe they shouldn't have the crispy onions. Hoping... Praying that I was mistaken; perhaps these were magically gluten-free onions. I asked our waitress. She confirmed that these most certainly were gluten-filled crispy onions. In conclusion, unless you're going to order something that is guaranteed marked gluten-free, don't trust your waiter or kitchen staff to be aware of any allergies or use what I believe to be common sense because you cannot count on it in this location. On another note, because I was going to have the world's roughest night on the toilet, I expressed to my waitress that I was not about to finish my meal for OBVIOUS reasons; I was hoping maybe at the goodness of their heart after poisoning me they would want to comp my meal in someway... They did not. But whatever, it's partly my fault for trusting a restaurant's awareness of severe food allergies ... I just won't be coming back here. Unfortunately the character of the place was lost during the move from Squirrel Hill to Shadyside. The new modern digs don't have the same good vibes. The place is now always overrun on the weekends and they are sorely understaffed. I think it's still popular due to the holdover reputation and the variety of breakfast dishes (the bowls do have good hearty flavor). If you are ok waiting around and willing to commit the time, go for it. However, the last time I was in I got the salmon salad which comes with a heaping scoop of the salmon/mayo mixture (think tuna salad on a bed of lettuce). It NEEDS a carb to dip/eat it with. I explained to the server the dish was lacking and I asked for some simple soup crackers... was told they don't have any (even though soup is on the menu?)... ok so I asked for a slice of bread... the server pulled out her Toast tab machine to place an order for a SLICE OF BREAD... I let her know I didn't want it if I had to pay... she was completely unapologetic and seemed bothered I was wasting her time... Le sigh. This was my first time visiting the Square cafe! Very cute spot, local vibe, good location. The atmosphere is very bright and friendly with local art on the walls. The mugs are all different and also very artsy, I believe they sell them as well. The menu had lots of variety and Everything was delicious! My server was so stinking nice. I changed my mind on what I wanted like 45 seconds after she walked away with our orders so I went to find her, and she ran back into the kitchen to change my order. Was so nice about it. Food took quite a while to arrive. It was def busy- we arrived around noon on a Sunday - and my group had five in it so I'm sure that was part of it but food took a really long time to arrive. I'm guessing about an hour. When it came, it was really good. I got the vegan sausage hash but without the sausage because it wasn't gluten free. The amount of egg it comes with was tiny, four bites to be exact (could've been two but was trying to savor), so that was pretty disappointing. It was really well done, though. Lovely spacious cafe with great service and a large brunch menu including several vegan options well marked. Good stuff- Solid unpretentious cold brew Vegan Scramble- it's called vegan scramble on the menu but they present it at the table as the Italian vegan scramble and it tilts heavily toward the italian seasoning versus a typical scramble. It was good but not great to me. It features a product called zero egg (which all their vegan plates have) which is a lot like Just Egg and I liked it. This dish also has some seitan italian sausage, some spinach and a yellow cheese (probably daiya but I didn't ask) vegan brussels sprouts hash was stellar. Zero egg, vegan sausage, brussels sprouts, over a simple bowl of grits. Vegan peanut butter pancakes were ok. Large portion served with very delicious Yeany Maple syrup. On a Saturday at 11am, there was around a 20 minute wait for 2 people, which wasn't bad. After our wait, we were sat at their breakfast bar. The space is really airy and colorful. It was a good space. I had never been to the other location, but I thought everything looked nice. I wish that the bar seating had hooks to store our purses. Since the chairs didn't hold them well, we had to put them on the floor. I got the Cran-razmosa for my drink, which is a sparkling drink from their specials list. I enjoyed it, and would recommend the drink. I ordered the chicken mushroom crepe, and wasn't a huge fan. The crepe was weak, and there was so much sauce. I expected a little bit of sauce, but I thought the crepe seemed drowned. There were large portions of chicken, and I liked that, but overall wouldn't recommend this dish. The service was good. Our waiter was nice, and the food came out quickly. I got the muddy chai latte to go after the meal, and that was good. What an amazing spot for breakfast or brunch! I'm super happy that I finally got to check Square Cafe off of my list of places to eat, and it definitely succeeded by expectations. The inside of the restaurant is super trendy, filled with unique art work and bright colors. The service here was outstanding, as I was always offered more coffee and my water was always full! We ordered the dirty chai and the Carmel latte, which were both delicious! I have never had a dirty chai, but this may be my new go-to drink! To eat, we ordered the Nutella crepes, the square breakfast, and the ranchero omelet. The Nutella crepes were loaded with a tone of Nutella and served with a nice side of whip-cream. Everything tasted super fresh, and a future tip would be to order a side of fruit to have with the crepes! We also ordered the square breakfast, which comes with eggs, your choice of breakfast meat, and either home fries and toast or a pancake! Since it was Easter, we decided to upgrade to the specialty Peep pancake that they were offering, which was a pancake stuffed with Peeps and topped with an additional peep. This put us in the Easter spirit, as everything on this plate was absolutely amazing. My girlfriend is always scared of ordering pancakes because she fears they will be dry, but these pancakes were super fluffy, flavorful, and not dry at all! The eggs were cooked perfectly as well! Lastly, we ordered the ranchero omelette, which was full of vegetables, breakfast meats, and topped with cheese. The omelette itself tasted amazing and was served along a nice side of mixed greens. The wait here can be pretty long on weekends. I got really lucky as I didn't have to wait for too long! I ordered a mocha and was served in a cool ceramic mug. The mugs were more memorable than the coffee! The menu is hugeee and lots of vegetarian options! My husband got a veggie omelette and he says it's the best one he's had in Pittsburgh! The service was absolutely excellent!!! We walked in on a time crunch and talked to our waitress and she got our order in and got us our food quickly. The French toast was out of this world. The bacon was nice and crispy. The wife got the bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich, and she loved it. I had a bite, and you could just tell how fresh everything is. What a great find on a wedding weekend! It's on a block from the hotel too. I'm in a power chair and when we got there we were bummed cus the main door isn't chair friendly. Amazing gem in the heart of East Liberty! They have indoor and outdoor seating and a covered deck on the top floor for dining. They have electronic menus so you can scan the code with your phone to pull up the menu. They use Individual ketchup, salt and pepper packets to help minimize sharing bottles on the table for COVID measures. The service was prompt and the food came out very quickly. My crepes were soft and sweet and the nuttela set them on fire. I add fresh strawberries on top which made them perfect. No let's talk about the chicken sausage link! Not what I expected, wayyy better. It was seasoned in every bite and had red/green peppers cased throughout the link. Delicious!
