Food was fabulous-service was awful. We had 6pm reservations but when they called to confirm they said the reservations were for 545...I explained the reservations were for 6 and that is the time we had arranged to meet friends. I was told that since "the person who took the reservation filled in the form incorrectly I guess it is our error. We will honor the 6pm time". From the second we walked in the door-we got the bums rush out the door. The waitress was awful. We tried to order appetizers and were told that she cannot take an order for apps only for the whole meal since that is "how the kitchen is set up". We asked for bread and she said she wasn't going to bring it because she didn't want us to fill up on that before "the good stuff"???? Square Cafe is a sophisticated, classy "neighborhood joint" that allows you to have a foodie night without venturing into the city. It has a comfortable decor with lots of banquette seating, as well as table that can be put together, and a small bar. The location, right in the center, is easily accessible and there is ample nearby parking. Hingham has a great social scene among the thirty+ somethings, and while I wouldn't call it hip, it has a great set of customers. Thursday through Sunday are packed, and the only downside is that it does get very noisy. Also, reservations on these nights are recommended. The food is great! No too simple, but not too over the top. I always get the vegetarian plate, even though I am not vegetarian. The chef puts together a different selection of four things every time, and it is amazing, especially the veggie tempura that is made to look like a club sandwich. The square Cafe is perfect for a casual night out or special occasion, and is worth the trip! read more

Hey it's a solid place to grab some above average food. High quality food but a limited menu that seemingly doesn't change a whole lot. Hard to find the 'knock out signature dish' but the standard of a couple beef, a couple chicken, a fish or two and a token shellfish on the menu gets the job done. Needs to add a little creativity to their stable of tried-&-true dishes; a nightly vegetarian and vegan offering seems like a lay-up idea (after all this is Hingham). And the puzzler of the week - Why on God's green earth when paying $12.50 for a marginal pour of red wine does it arrive at the table bordering on warm? Like +70 degree warm. For the price you should take wine a bit more seriously...Cave temp plus a bit would do you well. read more

Just finished the most wonderful meal here. My family has gone here a number of times, and wanted to share this great place with me. The restaurant itself was beautiful on the inside , white linen table cloths, pillows around the booths, beautiful flowers. Etc I started with a very tasty drink that was made with coconut Malibu rum, pineapple juice and coconut water......... Then a fresh beet salad with blue cheese, pecans and topped with arugula. When you read this description, what do you expect? "Asian Fish Taco" - Togorashi Seared Yellow fin Tuna, Wasabi Crème Fraiche, Soy Syrup, Gingered Coleslaw, House Made Chips. 18. If you're like me, you probably expected something delicious and impressive, in which case you would have been wrong. There were no tacos, there were 2 mini, soggy "wraps". There was almost no tuna in them, and it was not seared. It was raw. I like raw tuna, but not when I'm expecting seared tuna. The soy syrup came on the side and I skipped it altogether because the wrap was already drowning in sauce. They were really heavy-handed with the wasabi creme fraiche. There was no cole slaw. There were some julienned vegetables inside the wrap but not too many and I didn't taste any ginger. I guess I assumed the house made chips would have been fried wonton chips or maybe even friend tortilla chips since this was billed as a "taco", but they were potato chips. Nothing wrong with that - I was just surprised. They were actually very good but after eating them I kind of had that queasy, "wow, those were pretty greasy" feel. To me, this was a serious case of false advertising and I would never order this dish again. I'm not usually one to complain about price but I do think $18 was pretty steep for this, given the minuscule portion of tuna. I'd guess there was a total of 2 ounces total, maybe? I'm keeping the 3 star rating because I do like other things from here, as mentioned in my previous review - most notably the Square Burger and the Yellowfin Tuna Two-ways (which is what I should have ordered last night). The dude and I went here for date night last month and I must say I was impressed. Nice atmosphere. Good Service. Great food. We split the Roasted Red & Yellow Beet Salad (so good). I had the Roasted Pork Tenderloin and he had the Pan Seared Mahi Mahi. Both were good. Dessert was a bit of a crap shoot. The Coconut Creme Brulee was bland and not worth the calories. An inventive menu where most items lie just beyond your comfort zone- and you'll be happy you took the plunge. I started with fried calamari served with mango, grapefruit and cashews. It was unlike any other calamari I've had before, with a range of textures from crispy and crunchy to smooth and fresh. Delicious! For an entree I had the duck breast with butternut squash. I'm fairly new to duck and my server, Luke, was helpful and informative in the process of ordering. The dish was plated beautifully and cooked to perfection, complimented by flavors like sage and orange zest. I sampled my girlfriend's scallops and they were the biggest silkiest scallops everrrr. Finally, I had pumpkin creme brûlée and it was everything I could have hoped for in a pumpkin dish- fresh pumpkin flavor and no weird coloring or excessive sugar. It was garnished with and orchid and Luke was even nice enough to bring out a candle for my friend! Cocktails were great, service was even better (thanks Luke!) and the atmosphere was sweet and cozy. Love the Square Cafe for the food, atmosphere and ambiance. It's everything Hingham is rolled into a great restaurant. Order the MUSSELS, I can drink the broth! (and give you a spoon), TUNE 2 WAYS, CALAMARI, ROASTED BEET SALAD, FILET OR MAHI MAHI....I could go on. I would have given 5 stars but I've ordered the steak twice and it keeps coming med-well not med-rare....the chefd should know that means I want it pink in the middle. Been twice: great food and friendly service both times. It's not cheap, but neither is it outrageously expensive, especially considering what you get. We were four people, shared two appetizers and two salads, ate their small portions of entrés and drank a couple of large bottles of sparkling water: $142 before tip. We were totally sated. The calamari and crab cake appetizers and the beet salad are great. Never had better scallops. I thought the salmon was OK, although someone in my party thought it was to die for. Best food i've had on the South Shore, and at least as good as something like No. 9 Park in Boston. The ambiance is a bit too formal for my liking, but I'm a pretty informal kinda guy and it seems to fit Hingham. As others have mentioned, get reservations. read more

We arrived at 5:50pm for a 6:00pm reservation, with a empty restaurant. We received drinks and an app then our waitress proceeded to handle every other table and finally came back to our table at 7:15pm to take our order. I've never seen anything like it, we had empty glasses and the bus boy had cleared our app. We waited for over 50 minutes!Huge disappointment, as it was my mother's 70th birthday. This restaurant is a must. Ask for Kate. Best service we've ever had. Visiting our kids-from California, & we thought we knew food. This place had the absolute best appetizers-we had the Brussel sprouts, tuna Tartar & mussels. We fought over which were better. Dinner was just as delightful. Cod, braised short ribs, scallops or butternut squash ravioli. We all ate off each other's decadent plates. Dessert-coconut cream pie, bread pudding and the carrot cake-EPIC. Lately Boston's food scene is boring-but this rejuvenated us. See you next year. read more

I agree. This is definitely one of the best places to eat on the South Shore. I've tried several specials and lots of things off their seasonal menu -- I've never had a bad meal or a bad time. Whether hosting family gathering or dinner for two, the staff at Square Cafe is always accommodating and helpful. If you like tuna, the Yellow Fin Tuna Two Ways is great starter. Other good choices are the Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura or Pan Seared Jonah Crab & Lobster Cakes appetizers. For the main course, I recommend the Roasted Red & Yellow Beet salad followed by either the The Grilled #1 Yellow fin Tuna or Spice Rubbed Statler Chicken Breast. They're both equally delicious. And right now, the strawberry rhubarb crisp is a must have for desert! With great food and with an upscale atmosphere that's anything but stuffy, Square Cafe is a good choice for any night of the week. read more

This is definitely the best dining on the South Shore!! Where to begin... My girlfriend and I wanted to go out for a special dinner (no occasion really just an excuse to get a little dressed up) so this place was an obvious choice. When the waitress brought over the calamari she said it was the best she ever had- a bold statement...but she was absolutely right!! Excellent flavor, large pieces with grapefruit, papaya and Thai dressing, simply amazing! I had the Korean rubbed flank steak, and I wouldn't normally order flank steak at a restaurant like this, but it was delicious and full of flavor, and the wasabi mashed potato was also fantastic. My girlfriend ordered the pork tenderloin (which I was originally going to order until someone recommended the flank). It was well prepared but not as flavorful as we hoped. The waitress was very friendly, offered suggestions, was there when we needed her and stayed away at the right times. We had a few of the martinis (the Mai Thai, the Pomegranate and the X rated). Definitely try the X rated martini- strong yet very flavorful. Apps are $9-15, small plates about $20 and large plates $20-32. Well worth the price, check it out! They take reservations, definitely recommended on the weekends. read more

I recently ate here with my boyfriend and his foodie parents. They have taken me to many restaurants in several cities over the past couple of years and, I have to say, this one is in the running for the absolute best. We started with mussels (thai style - spicy and I am pretty sure coconut milk was involved = you can't go wrong!) and I ordered the Statler Chicken Breast for dinner. It was the best chicken I have ever eaten. I ended the meal with the carrot cake dessert, which was also delicious. The portions are the perfect size - we ordered a lot of food, but didn't leave too stuffed... but there was enough food to share with each other. I recommend sharing desserts at the end, though. One per each would be wayyy too much. I'll be back to this place! read more

The finest dining on the South Shore! I've had dinner here a few times, and every time it has been superb! Everything from the artisan bread and chive-infused olive oil dipping sauce to start, the comprehensive cocktail list, delectable seasonally inspired mains, and out of this world desserts, are sublime. Service is impeccable - attentive, but unobtrusive. We had the hot & sour calamari, seared yellowfin ahi, duck medallions - as well as pumpkin bread pudding and creme brûlée to finish. I want to dine here again just thinking about it. Massive compliments to the chef! The herbs, contrasting flavors, innovative pairings, etc. make everything I've ever had the pleasure to eat here, the very best of that particular food I've ever eaten. Went for dinner the other night. Calamari was delicious, the could drink the sauce straight if offered. Cucumber martini also fantastic. Scallops cooked expertly, however the bits of bacon in the risotto made me think the rice was crunchy(undercooked or burnt). Dessert was a let down. Tried the house made coconut cream pie. Presentation was lacking. Garnished with inedible flowers (completely unnecessary). Pie crust not baked enough, and most likely not made in house but bought frozen in a tin. Worst of all topped with canned whipped cream, probably near the end of the can because it was soft and runny. While the food was great, it is clear they do not employ a pastry chef, probably not even a pastry cook. read more

We enjoyed the crusty bread with chive infused olive oil along with our drinks-Fig Manhattan with Woodford's reserve is tasty and beautifully prepared. Good selection of craft, draft and bottled beers. Sesame Seared Faroe Island Salmon was properly seasoned and the salmon was moist and flavorful. A great spot for lunch. It's classy, but with a welcoming (almost quaint...) vibe. It's instantly apparent that many of the diners are regulars, as the hostess greets almost every party by name when they walk through the door. The salads and sandwiches are all fantastic. I'll preface this review by saying that my friend won a $200 GC here and we finally used it last night. There were only 3 of us, and we definitely tried it all! Saturday nights here are apparently crazy. They say reservations are recommended but I'm pretty sure they are your only option. Called that day and they could only take us at 9pm. The place is not very big but ambiance is nice. My husband was wowed at all the little touches: cleaning the crumbs off the table, the waiters rushing over to fold the napkins if you go to the bathroom. The bread was nice, dipping oil was wonderful and I'm not usually into that. We had some martinis. My favorite was the Bikinitini with the toasted coconut rim. We tried the egg rolls with the delicious pineapple dipping sauce and also the flatbread pizza. Not huge apps but very good. Got a Caesar salad for the table to split that was pretty usual. I had the ribeye which was cooked to order. My dinner dates both got the scallops and both raved that it was the best they ever had! The fried shrimp rice was great as well. I wasn't overly impressed with the desserts. The presentation was great but they weren't the sweetest of desserts. The molten chocolate cake was a bit bitter to me, much more higher of a cocoa percentage I think than I usually care for. The carrot cake was a huge individual cupcake but covered with whip cream, the frosting was just on the plate. I could have easily skipped the desserts. We spent around $250 including the tip for all these courses for the 3 of us. Glad we tried it all. Not quite sure if I'd spend my own money here, but it was a great experience. Portions weren't tiny but not big either. Menu was pretty small. Wish there were a bit more choices. read more

Some co-workers suggested I visit the Square Cafe for a working lunch and I was glad I took their advice. It's a nice, casual spot with very good food. My lunching companion and I both opted for salads - mine was the grilled chicken salad, his was the steak salad. I was not disappointed with mine and especially thought the dried papaya was a neat touch. Next time I have to meet someone for a working lunch, I'll be back! read more

This was my second time to the Square Cafe. The first time, we had a party of 4 and it was very busy, but the server was as attentive as he could be. The food came out in a timely manner and everyone enjoyed their meal. The 2nd time was extremely different. The restaurant was not even that crowded, the wait was extremely long for our meals. At one point, not 1 table had been served any food. The server was very polite and was very attentive. However, when I approached the bar for extra limes that the bar tender forgot in the first place, I was greeted with a scathing, disgusted expression by the bar tender, and was not even given a chance to ask for the limes. She then proceeded to totally ignore me for about 10 minutes and would not come anywhere near me. I eventually left and went back to my seat so I would not hold the rest of the table up while trying to place our dinner order. I should have gotten the bar tender's name or requested the manager at that point. I did not, and WILL NOT be returning after being treated like my own presence was somehow repulsing the bar tender. Hopefully the Hanover location will have friendlier staff. It's unfortunate since the Square Cafe has good food, but it is very overpriced. Hopefully I just caught her on a bad day. read more

It had been a while since my last dinner at The Square Cafe. That experience was outstanding, great food, drinks, service and atmosphere. This time, not so much. Perhaps my last visit was mid-week because I remember a much lower noise level and more attentive service. This was a Thursday night (2.28.2013). I had the grilled yellow fin tuna and tried the sea scallops. Neither wowed me. The sauce accompanying the yellow fin tuna, what was it? Looking back at the menu it should have been the Yuzu Vinaigrette as it was not the Pomegranate Syrup. Tasted like a chile seasame oil, and did not compliment the dish at all. The appetizers were more on the mark. I loved the Crispy Spiced Kurobuta Pork Belly and the yellow fin 2 ways was very good. I found the service to be disappointing. Waitress seemed irritated with menu questions and gave attitude when I asked how the tuna entree was prepared - she had already collected my menu. Martini's arrived cool, not cold, and again waitress seemed irritated to correct the problem. Is this a fine dining establishment or a diner? Not what I was looking forward too. Too much $$$ for "ok-good" meals and the service attitude is a killer. Unfortunately we will not be back. Rating is based on what I expect at this price point. read more

The first table they sat us at... shouldn't even be a table. Right next to the bathrooms and was teeny. Clearly the hostess wanted to test us to see if we were willing to sit at the kiddie table. Uh no.... Food was delicious and our server was top notch. I wish I could remember the name of our waitress-she was experienced and wonderful.
