Worst restaurant experience I have had in years! Sat down with my family only to have to wait for 30 minutes to even be acknowledged. Meanwhile every table around us was waited on and served. Watched as the hostess had to argue with the servers as to who was going to take our table. Took 50 minutes to get an ice tea, a lemonade, and a beer. Food finally came and my order was wrong. The waited another few minutes to see if my kids food would arrive, only to watch another table next to ours being promptly served. Contacted the manager who promptly gave the bail out excuse that it was busy and they had been negatively affected by Covid. Give me a break! When every other table in the joint is served but one, Covid is not your problem! To bad I can't give zero stars. read more

Mushroom burger was a home run, all the flavors shined. The meat was perfect, great beefy taste and texture. If sauteed onions were added, it would be a grand slam. Went to Square Burger last nite based on previous reviews of the place and how good the burgers and service was. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the reputation of the great service....we did order sweet potato fries which were really good, but the service from the bartender was less than desirable. Couldn't even tell you his name as he didn't greet us or try to offer help when we said we were looking for a drink. A simple gesture of telling your patrons your name is huge in my book along with engaging them about your experience of the beers you have on tap. Needless to say, didn't order a burger and left after we finished our fries to go to another place...disappointed since the hype of Square Burger was so good. So...after not getting any response about the horrible service last time...we attempted to go back because we really wanted a burger. In summary: Pricey burgers with gourmet toppings in a trendy setting. Situated in the heart of downtown McKinney, Square Burger is definitely tries to be trendy, and succeeds- though the restaurant still has a comfortable, light, airy vibe; not always so at "hip" dining locales. The music (mostly acoustic guitar stuff) helped it to feel less obnoxious. The menu was semi-small but creative. It featured a nice little selection of gourmet burgers, including some inventive options, like lamb and salmon burgers. We were impressed by the variety of beers they had on draft, though we did not partake. I opted for the Bleu Burger on this visit. It consisted of a hamburger patty topped with melted bleu cheese, a yummy caramelized onion spread, and an ample amount of fresh arugula, served on a warm ciabatta bun. All of the burger toppings were fresh and flavorful. I have to say, however, that they overpowered the flavor of the meat. But they were so yummy, I didn't mind. Much. I ordered my burger medium rare, and there were no traces of pink to be found in the center of my burger. As I said, I felt like the other ingredients were the star here, so it wasn't a big factor. Normally, this would be a deal breaker. We shared the sweet potato fries. YUM. They were thin and crisp, and dusted with just the right amount of sugar. The zesty garlic aioli accompaniment offset the sweetness perfectly. Best part of the meal. The service we received was friendly and efficient. Drinks stayed refilled, and we never had to wait for anything. A manager stopped by our table to ask how everything was. My burger was $9. The sweet potato fries (split between the two of us) were $4.50. Total check for two burgers, fries, and one soft drink was $27. A little steep- but comparable to Twisted Root, Kenny's, etc. In summary, this is not my favorite new burger place, but it was a nice change of pace. That being said, I can't see it becoming a part of our "regular rotation". I can't shake RG's (Denton) and Kenny's (Frisco). If you like a "fancy" burger and are more concerned with toppings than beef, this might be for you. But if you do go, get the sweet potato fries. read more

First off, I always thought this place was named Square Burger because the burgers were square shaped. Silly me, it is named so because it is on the square in McKinney. Figured that one out when my burger arrived and it was round. Nonetheless, it was a good burger and the bun was so soft and moist. We also had the wing appetizer and those were good. More on that later. The reason this is only a 3 star review is because: 1. The service is just okay. There were large gaps in when the server would come by our table. 2. They charged for extra blue cheese for the wings even though the amount they give you is not sufficient for the amount of wings they give you. Just build the cost into the price of the dish if that is the case. 3. There is no where to wait indoors. Since this place is often busy, you feel like you are in the way when waiting for a table, unless you go outside, which is fine in the spring or fall. read more

What a wonderful burger joint! My daughter first came here with friends, the owners wanted to make homecoming into a special night and treated the kids to some wonderful food and a good time. This place is very nice and not your normal walk in and walk out burger place. It's great for kids, families or anyone who loves burgers. This place was the only busy restaurant on the McKinney square when we visited on a Saturday afternoon no January. Everything we ordered was excellent: - blue cheese burger: a quarter pound of medium rare goodness, ground very fine, with very frest LTO and a fresh baked challah roll - string fried onions and sweet potato fries: came served crisp and hot. The strings had more structural integrity than any onion straws I've ever had (a good thing), and the sweet potato fries were sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, both very good on their own respect. - lobster mac and cheese: a fresh dish, nicely crusted and just cheesy enough, with decent lobster chunks, fresh peas, and mushroom slices, seasoned nicely. First time visiting after hearing YEARS of hype. To clarify: 2 stars given for borderline terrible service AND seriously mediocre food, especially for the price. The best thing was my beer, which was La Fin du Monde so needs no introduction. At least they have a decent selection of brews. We ordered a High Society burger (medium - at the waiter's suggestion), a Mushroom Border burger (also medium), spicy onion strings and sweet potato fries. Our burgers were served literally 20 minutes before the fries and onion rings. My burger had no sauce - period, nor was I asked if I would like any condiments. Our table received minimal to no attention despite the fact that the restaurant is tiny and they weren't crowded. Multiple times I saw the waiter conversing with other waitstaff rather than checking in with us, and others who came in after were served prior. We were later informed that he had neglected to put in the order for our sides but weren't offered concessions for this (i.e. free drinks, comped sides, coupon, nothing). Rather than noticing our sides hadn't been delivered when asked how our food was, I had to point this out. By the time our sides arrived, our burgers were cold. You couldn't taste the prosciutto on the High Society, which was the main selling point, and even after adding the garlic aioli to my dry burger, which was done well rather than medium, it had barely any flavor. Both were very bland. The fries served were regular despite requesting sweet potato, and the "spicy" onion strings had literally no seasoning. I cook everyday and don't eat out much, so, when I do, I expect high quality. This was honestly not as good as the last burger I had at Chili's, and I'd take Chick-fil-a fries over what was served here. I'm also a high proponent of farm to table, locally sourced and organic as much as I can get - and I appreciate that - but that doesn't mean you can't season things. Overall, this was a bad experience based upon poor overall facility management and tasteless food added to poor service. Would not recommend or go again. read more

Five Star Everything Except the Burgers. The atmosphere has a cool LA vibe, with giant windows, white everything, and modern decor. The staff is friendly, yet not so knowledgeable, and since this is a "gastropub" the staff should know quite a bit about the drink selection and food...or at least be willing to go ask someone who does. The mushroom burger is underwhelming and the regular burger sucked, specifically they can't get the meat right in seasoning or doneness (just learned that doneness is a word). Fries are awesome, and I enjoyed the onion strings. Beer selection is huge and efficient, and the desert offerings are tempting...ice cream sandwiches on a 100 degree Texas day? ...I'll take 2. Make sure to specify you want the smaller order. The larger order is good for two or three people. The burger I almost always get when I come here is the Mushroom Border Burger. The avocado and mushrooms really set it off. Such a good burger. They come with fries (again, get those sweet potato fries). You also get a fried dill pickle spear which is really great. And you can ask them to substitute the burger's patty to a turkey burger if you're trying to be healthy (ish). The only downside to this place is they don't have any TVs in there. I know, I know... Terrible meal. First, the server was horrific. My burger arrived without cheese and had to be sent back while everyone else ate. Forgot my order of fries. I asked for napkins, when he didn't bring them, I had to ask again and interrupt him texting to get the napkins.
