Tried Square Burger in downtown McKinney today and honestly it's the kind of place you hope to randomly discover. Nothing pretentious, just really good burgers done right. The first thing you notice is how simple everything is--in a good way. The burger is smashed perfectly so the edges get that crispy crust, but the inside stays juicy. The bun is soft, the toppings are fresh, and everything just works together without trying too hard. I went with a Smoky Burger and fries. The burger had that great balance of salty, cheesy, and beefy flavor, and the cheese was melted exactly how it should be. The fries were hot, crispy, and the kind you keep eating even when you're already full. The vibe is super laid-back too. Feels like the kind of spot you can roll into with friends, grab a burger, laugh a bit, and not feel rushed. No gimmicks--just good food and a chill atmosphere. This place is always crowded but for good reason! They've got way more to offer than you would think based on the name. Though the burgers are fantastic. Beyond the burgers, the food quality is top tier! Also, whether you're an adult or child the Mac and Cheese Bar is chaotically delicious with so many combinations to make it your own. It's damn delicious every time I visit. Service gets touch and go during extremely busy times but the food is consistently overachieving. Wish more servers were on staff and the bartenders weren't as overwhelmed with managing their area and the dining area and the outdoor seating area as well. Because, then the ambiance of the entire dining experience is stolen away from the guest. So, that's something to consider but is easily solvable. read more

Set in quiet, unhurried oldtown McKinney, nice minimalist dream spot. Just step in, pick a seat, and drink order taken almost as soon as you sit. Server greets you nicely. Laid back 70s rock playing... Doobie bros., Chicago, love the vibe of soft 70s rock? This is heaven.. "Momma Told Me Not to Come".. is playing now. Mine didn't tell me not to come here. Had she, I would've anyway. It's Sunday, but they have a nice little crowd. This means they must be serving up good eats. Wife order a classic cheeseburger, I ordered a BBQ cheddar with onion strings. Will let you know after what the flavors were like. Pictures do not do the big burger taste justice. As gorgeous as they look, they taste 1000% better. Onion straws? Perfectly seasoned, not salty, not greasy at all. Perfectly done. Came out to view new homes in Melissa. The waiter was very nice. He stayed on top of our needs. I'm kind of disappointed in the food. I usually have a burger, but was craving a good fish sandwich. The fish, itself, was good on the toasted bun. Their French fries were hot and crisp and the fried pickle was excellent. The disappointment was in the totally bland tartar sauce and coleslaw that hurt the entire fish experience. The slaw had not a hint of vinegar. The tartar sauce was thin, creamy and tasted milky. Went to Square Burger tonight for date night, and this place just doesn't disappoint!! I've been several times, and I've not ever had anything that wasn't really good!! The grilled cheese & tomato soup was the best I've had in quite a while, and as was evidenced by his empty plate, clearly my hubby liked the roasted chicken, potato purée & mixed vegetables!!! Went to the first new wine dinners their doing every last Monday of the month and let me tell you it's AMAZING. Great wines, amazing choices for the menu, and wonderful staff. If you want to sign up just call the store or go in for more information which is what I did. Definitely something to try out and I will definitely be back for more! read more

Love this place. Every other place was packed so we stumbled upon this gem. There is ample outdoor and indoor seating. They have a full bar and a large menu full of options. I typically don't eat beef burgers so I opted for the tuna burger! Wow it's was so flavorful and the waiter was right; it tasted like sushi. The sweet potato fries were bomb. Better than the regular fries. The service was great and good came out quickly even with it being a busy Saturday. Overall looking forward to coming back. What a great surprise trying Square Burger for the first time. Went against grain and ordered a cheesesteak with side salad. The beef was flavorful and tender and the French role was nicely toasted and flakey. You can't have a good cheesesteak without a great roll. Good burgers, salad, Mac & Cheese with a decent beer and wine list. This used to be one of my favorite places if I was in McKinney but Something has changed. They are often out of wines, the sweet hostess (who was the mom of one of the owner's son friends) is gone and the waitstaff is more typical. They are fine, not as friendly, knowledgeable or attentive but the food is fairly similar. It's still worth a visit but perhaps lower the bar a bit if someone told you to try it. read more

I have been on a journey with Square Burger since they opened. They were pretty great out the gate with some of my favorite food in the DFW area, then during the pandemic the service and maintenance of the establishment went downhill. They since seen a change of ownership and things are looking up inside. Service is still not the best, but the booths and tables are once again cared-for. All this being said, the food has been consistently good through it all. The sweet potatoes, shoestring-thin and dusted with cinnamon sugar, are an absolute standout and will convince anyone that sweet potato fries can be even better than regular. The mushroom burger has always been my go-to favorite. It's unassuming and simple but tastes fantastic. I've brought friends here from Houston and they left wanting to make another trip to Mckinney for the food. Part of that is down to Square Burger, for sure. Mediocre in my opinion. They have wide choice of burgers with creative ingredients. I had the Stadium Burget and my husband had mushroom border burger. They were decent but not super impressive. I had high expectations on the onion strings but they came out lukewarm and not fresh. Seemed like both the fries and the onion strings were sitting out for a while before they came to our table. Square Burger hosted a new wine dinner with Andy the owner of McKinney Wine Merchant. Chef Craig and Chef Rob completely blew the diners away with their food. Their culinary talents shone brightly! The wine offerings complimented each dish perfectly. The wait staff was attentive and service was flawless. Restaurant was nicely lit and simple table decorations were just right. My favorite burger joint! You can't get any better. The Lamb Burger is delicious! I didn't even get a picture because I was in a rush to dive in. The sweet potato fries are also good. Wings are a great option. Soups are great. I don't think you can go wrong. Service is excellent. Nick is the the best! He took care of us during the Texas Music Festival while the place was packed and it was pouring out...we were never missing anything and he even managed to sneak in a little conversation while I'm sure he was in the weeds. Service was ok, kind of slow. Liked the decor. Cozy, but again loud (I get over stimulated a lot, so small busy spaces, not my thing) crowds, or really crowded places make me panic. If you read my other reviews, you'll know I very rarely give 5 stars but Square Burger ticks every box! First, cool place. Tall ceiling covered in stamped tin from way back but the rest of the decor is hip and modern. The backsplash for the beer taps is covered in a beautiful, blue mosaic. There is a long L shaped bar that looks like a great place to sample one of the many beers on tap. Even the floor is cool w flecks of blue shimmering in the sunlight. But I know you're not looking for a review of the decor. You want to know "How's the food?". Answer; freakin great! But go in w your eyes open. It is a burger restaurant. That's what you will get and if you like burgers, you will be blown away. My daughter and I both got the High Society Burger (hey, who doesn't like prosciutto?). She ordered fries and I went for onion rings. After we ordered we sat and were chatting. I figured it would take a while, but after 15-20 minutes, the waitress came to the table and told us they lost our ticket but she had it memorized and the food would be right out. She also told us to pick out a dessert which we would get on the house. I have worked in restaurants before and I know that issues crop up and can recognize when a restaurant has a culture of growth and accountability. Square Burger earned 2 extra stars for quickly addressing the snafu, correcting the problem ASAP and putting a little sugar on the solution. No drama just service. The burgers were done perfectly and my daughter loved her thin, crispy fries. But she was sad that she didn't order the onion rings once she had one of mine. I can't decide which was better; the burger or the rings! And our server was so absolutely cool.
